We’ve had better days. Multiple smoke detector failures that traumatized Willow with the chirping. She tried to hide in the garage and wouldn’t come inside to get to the back yard. We can’t reach them, one ceiling is 13 ft high. Could not get ANYONE to come help until next week. FINALLY someone had pity on me and changed the schedule around. Change batteries, still chirping. After 2 hours of this BS, disconnected everything until tomorrow. In the meantime, Willow escaped. Fortunately, she didn’t get far and I got to her.
Also, my husband managed to piss me off. I sent him on an errand just to get him out of the house for an hour. Hopefully, he’ll decide to find a bar and stay out for a few more.

CONTAINER SHIP AGROUND OUTSIDE PATAPSCO RIVER
A nearly 1,100-foot-long container ship ran aground Sunday night on its way out of the Port of Baltimore, and as of Monday the ship was still stuck with no indication of when it could be moved.
Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class Stephen Lehmann tells Bay Bulletin the container ship Ever Forward, which sails under the Hong Kong flag, ran aground before 11 p.m. Sunday. No one was injured. The Evergreen Marine Corp. (also based in Hong Kong) ship was headed for Norfolk when it got stuck near the Craighill Channel. Ever Forward was built in 2020, is 1,050 feet long, and reportedly draws about 42.6 feet of water. In the area where Ever Forward is sitting, NOAA charts indicate 24 feet of water at Mean Low Low water.

All the hots chicks are from Ukraine which weighs heavily on my foreign policy analysis. No wish to see Ukraine suffer. But Zelensky could just assert he wants to be a buffer state. Some fertilizer education from a rancher
https://twitter.com/ploughmansfolly/status/1489235566113796097
First, some basic info. Nitrogen fertilizer is, after water, the biggest limiting factor in modern crop production. It takes the form of ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), first synthesized in the 17th century, and first mass produced for explosives manufacturing during WWII
.
.
The problem with ammonium nitrate is that it’s a form of salt: a rocky precipitate—nonexistent in nature—that coalesces after the reaction of ammonium and nitric acid. Salt, as we all know from our readings on the Punic Wars, makes soils infertile by killing microbiological life.
.
.
And so since the 1950s, American farmers have been literally salting their own fields. This happens to work in the short term because this particular salt happens to be very nitrogen rich. But in longer term, dead, eroding soil is untenable, producing diminishing returns.
.
.
Some farmers, though, will not even be able to raise soy, and so they may lose their farms, and the American agricultural landscape will become even more consolidated. (One step closer to the Crop Belt becoming one giant Gates/govt co-owned soy/rapeseed farm.)
.
.
The problem in America is not that we do not produce enough of our own fertility. It’s that the vehicles of that fertility are herded into feedlots, and their manure is flushed into the local river system with every storm, creating a dead zone the size of CT in the Gulf of Mexico [note from me: plastics aren’t the problem]
.
.

.
.
What farmers at the time, if I may say so, may not have realized, was the degree to which they were actually relying on a 13,000 year soil-building legacy from intact grassland ecosystems(*) in existence prior to European arrival.
.
.
And so now the chickens may finally be coming home to roost. One of my mottos is: we can’t afford the cheap stuff. And that goes for nitrogen fertilizer just as aptly as Chinese-made shovels and hammers that break after six months (and you can’t fix a carbon fiber handle).
(*)And you know what fertilized those grassland ecosystems? Bison/buffalo

Producers already admit to rationing food
National producers already admit food rationing, with price increases of 20% to 30% in the coming days. “We are in a food emergency situation like I don’t remember having lived through”, Eduardo Oliveira e Sousa, president of CAP, told Expresso.
“In addition to an increase in prices, there will be a shortage of products, which leads to speculation, which in turn leads to a further increase. It is impossible to know how far the climb will go”, says the president of the Confederação dos Agricultores de Portugal (CAP), who added that there are farmers who will give up producing various seasonal crops, such as corn, vegetables and some fruits in order not to have any losses. “The stock of some products, such as flour for pasta, is so low that in a month or two we may have to go into rationing as happened in the 70s”, he said.
The vice-president of the Portuguese Association of Distribution Companies, Gonçalo Lobo Xavier, told Expresso, that for the time being, there are no production disruptions, “but there is an absolutely unprecedented price pressure”. The director-general of the Portuguese Association of Branded Product Companies, Pedro Pimentel, admits: “We can have in retail a scenario identical to queues at gas stations, with people buying non-perishable products in advance”. The president of the Food Bank against Hunger warns that “food shortages will reach a level that has not been seen for many years”.

DC Trucker Convoy Snarls Already-Congested Local Traffic
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hundreds of truckers and other motorists who have been doing rolling protests on highways encircling Washington made their way into the nation’s capital Monday, snarling already-congested traffic in a demonstration against COVID-19 mandates and other grievances.
The DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency issued a traffic advisory shortly before 2 p.m. that suggested motorists delay travel or use alternative transportation “due to ongoing demonstration activity on I-395, I-695, and I-295.”
The Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department closed a number of streets and exits off the highways to prevent the protesters from coming into the city. “These rolling road closures are occurring in real-time as they are needed,” the announcement said.

But are aircraft the only way to do that? I’m remembering Afghanistan when we started giving the Afghani’s stinger missiles. Game changer. It’s not as if they would be short of spares. The only Russian manufactured parts are the initial rocket launcher, (re-tasked from an onselescent AAA system)the rest, cruise missile jet motor, guidance, warhead and launch vehicles are all Ukie manufactured.

Odesa’s Maze-Like Catacombs Could Be Bad News For Russian Invaders
Odesa’s catacombs could prove vexing for Russian invaders just as they have for other enemies in conflicts past.
Officially, the Odesa Catacombs comprise at least 2,500 kilometers, or just over 1,550 miles, of generally interlinked tunnels running under the city, as well as into outlying areas. Portions of the Catacombs are known to exist at three different depths at least, with the deepest being 60 meters, or almost 197 feet, below sea level, and there are at least 1,000 documented entry points. It is one of the world’s largest known underground networks.

In Congo, China Hits Roadblock in Global Race for Cobalt
For more than a decade, Chinese companies have spent billions of dollars buying out U.S. and European miners in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s cobalt belt—the world’s richest source of a mineral that has become critical to the global transition to cleaner energy. Now the Chinese firms are running into trouble after a court ordered one of the largest to temporarily cede control of one of its mines.
Just one electric vehicle can require between 10 and 30 pounds of cobalt to build its battery, depending on the manufacturer, though Tesla Inc. and other auto makers are now moving away from the material. Cobalt can boost charge rates and has a stabilizing effect, extending battery life and preventing cathode corrosion that can lead to battery fires.
Congo accounted for 70% of the world’s total output of cobalt last year, with Chinese investors controlling a similar proportion of cobalt production.
Demand is quickly growing, and the U.S. fears being left behind. Earlier this year the Biden administration dispatched a team to the capital, Kinshasa, to meet with Congolese leaders to see how America can secure access to the silvery-gray metal. Daleep Singh, a U.S. deputy national security adviser, criticized what he called “opaque” Chinese mining contracts, and said generations of investors had exploited the Congo’s resources.
Now Congo itself is pressing for a larger slice of the market, pushing back against China’s growing economic footprint in Africa, after a court last week stripped Hong Kong-listed China Molybdenum Co. of management control of its Tenke Fungurume mine. China Molybdenum will have to sit on the sidelines for six months after state miner Gécamines SA accused it of trying to evade millions of dollars in royalty payments by under-declaring reserves.
China Molybdenum, which bought the mine for $2.65 billion from Freeport McMoRan Inc. in 2016, has offered a settlement and has said that it hopes the matter will soon be resolved, but the process is moving slowly, people familiar with the situation say.
The company didn’t respond to requests for further comment. But now investigations have expanded into several other Chinese mining companies.
With the price of cobalt rising to multiyear highs, the standoff has the potential to become a turning point in China’s involvement with the continent, where until now it has run into relatively little opposition as it goes about securing supplies of valuable minerals, often in exchange for building roads and other important infrastructure.
“The DRC can stand its ground for a while, especially since the court can extend its ruling for another six months,” said Geraud Neema, an analyst and editor with the China Africa Project, a nonprofit.
As recently as last fall, China Molybdenum appeared to think it was on firmer ground in Congo. It began work on a $2.51 billion expansion plan to nearly double cobalt and copper production at the Tenke Fungurume site, set in the vast, dry scrubland of Lualaba province. Prospects looked good. Cobalt prices were on the rise as optimism grew over the faster take-up of electric vehicles.
But since December, Gécamines, which owns a 20% stake in the mine, has been pushing to remove Chinese management, accusing the Chinese of underestimating the mine’s reserves and paying less to the Congolese side than they should. Royalty payments have already tripled in recent years after Congo declared cobalt a strategic mineral. Congolese authorities are also now investigating $6 billion in Chinese-funded infrastructure-for-minerals deals.
Some industry analysts are now questioning the stability of the industry in Congo. The uncertainty is already threatening to push prices higher after more than doubling since January 2020 as electric-vehicle manufacturers rush to secure supplies.
“The Congolese government has a history of applying pressure on foreign mining operators in order to induce additional payments,” said Alexandre Raymakers, an analyst at Maplecroft, a risk consulting firm. “The scale of the Chinese presence in the country’s mining industry makes Chinese-controlled assets prime targets.”
During a visit to the mining region in the middle of last year, Congo’s President Félix Tshisekedi vowed that his government would continue reviewing mining contracts to make sure that the Congolese people benefit from its vast extractive industries and finally break the so-called resources curse by paying higher wages and royalty payments. Congo is one of the world’s poorest countries, with an annual budget of roughly $7 billion. More than 60% of Congo’s 90 million people live under $1.90 a day, according to The World Bank.
“I am tired of seeing foreigners come here with empty pockets and leave as billionaires while we remain poor,” he told a cheering crowd in the city of Kolwezi.
“The problems at the Tenke Fungurume mine extend beyond questions about technical matters,” said Anneke Van Woudenberg, executive director at UK-based corporate watchdog Rights and Accountability in Development, which has been documenting alleged abuses in the country’s cobalt industry.

This shit has been in play for over 100 years now. Not one single Pope has done as they were told, by the Virgen Mary. It was a clear command and the whole lot of them refused to do exactly was was demanded. Every time they modified of left out some of the command. All they had to do was do as they were commanded. The Pope PLUS ALL of the world’s Bishops would simultaneously dedicate Russia, (Not the Soviets, not the Ukies, Not the various Soviet republics) just Russia…. dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. That was what was required. It was that simple, but various Popes, even reasonably well meaning ones didn’t do as they were commanded.
That is the Pope and ALL the bishops simultaneously dedicate Russia to Mary. The Blessed Virgin warned that Russia would spread its errors (Communism globally) if they were NOT dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. Pius XII was the closest, but even he didn’t do as he was commanded. The 5 popes since the late 1950s were all compromised by Vatican II and some actively were culpable in attempting to destroy the Church. Even John Paul II sullied himself in Assisi with his ecuminist BS. Now the Church is suffering with what may end up an Anti-Pope, at a time when a true Pope is needed more than anything else.
All of the BS and manipulation of the last of the living visionaries in the 1970s, with all of the lying by various Church leadership, unpublished Third Secret from the Virgin, that extended to the BS release of counterfeit letters and even an imposture standing in for the last survivor of the three visionaries, locked away as she was in a closed order of nuns. The level of total BS has been massive and generated by some very wicked cardinals and bishops, and even Popes. The First Secret from the Virgin was to forecast the end of the Great War. The Second Secret from the Virgin was the forecast outbreak of WWII if the requirements of the Virgin Mary’s request to Commit Russia to Mary. The final Third Secret which several Popes have read tells of the almost but not quite, destruction of the Church, death of the ‘Bishop in White’ (commonly understood as the then current Pope, but these days when we have a Pope and a still living, Emeritus Pope in the person of Benedict XVI) who knows.
The Church has suffered over 150 years of suppression (so would say since 1717), enemy penitration by wicked Bishops and religious who actively worked against the Church via the Masonic Temple and communist sleepers, placed globally throughout the Church religious in the 1930s. Showing up initially as South American marxist priests, and peaking in the Early 1960s during Vatican II.
The level of manipulation by various Church Leaders including many Popes, of the simple requirements to sanctify Russia to the Blessed Virgin, has brought the globe to where we are right now.
I never even thought about this
Russia running out of cloud data storage following Ukraine invasion
The Russian news outlet Kommersant, citing government sources, is reporting that Russia is rapidly running out of domestic data storage for servers and other critical IT equipment. Russia’s Ministry of Digital Transformation reportedly held a meeting on March 9 with representatives Sberbank, MTS, Oxygen, Rostelecom, Atom-Data, Croc, and Yandex. One source told Kommersant that the departure of foreign cloud services like Google and Amazon increased demand on local storage, and the country expects that capacity to run out within the next two months. The shortage could lead to non-essential services shutting down, such as cloud gaming, music streaming, and video sharing platforms.
Russia is also reportedly having difficulty importing equipment from China, due to increased prices (the value of Russia’s currency is tanking) and disputed logistics. One source reportedly told Kommersant (translated), “Two truckloads of servers from a foreign vendor entered the country, but they refuse to give them to us, citing sanctions.” Ironically, Huawei has supposedly stopped shipments to Russia until March 26, which itself has been negatively affected by US sanctions over the past few years.
Russia is exploring a few options for the data storage, including seizing computers from companies leaving the country. The simplest solution would likely be for Russia to stop its invasion of Ukraine, which the United Nations reports has killed around 700 civilians so far, including 48 children.

well, its not.
the fed has a mandate to do two things. maintain the highest level of employment and maintain price stability.
these two goals are in fact mutually exclusive. this does tie the hands of the fed a bit.
when there is very low interest rates, money is cheap and there is more of it. now if one subscribes to the monetary theory of money, more dollars chasing fewer goods causes inflation.
the flip of this coin is that higher interest rates reduces M1 and M2 and makes investment more expensive. it also rewards savings.
the problem with ultra low interest rates is that the fed can then only go in one direction, up. if they get too low or negative, yes negative interest rates, we could fall into a liquidity trap which would take a decade to recover from. do see the lost decade, japan as an example.
so, one can look at interest dates as a spigot. lower rates means more money in circulation and inflation. high interest rates rates means less money in circulation and slower growth but much less inflation as less dollars are chasing goods.
the problem that we have here is from too cheap money for too long. we have stagflation. stagnant economy with inflation. while im not an orthodox monetarist, i will subscribe to too many dollars out there. easy money means easy growth but the business cycle cant be denied. its like trying to hold back the tide. the bill for easy money always comes due.
a read on how volker killed inflation and of the japanese lost decade would help in understanding where we are now.

now…with that in mind. if the USD falls from the internations reserve currency for traded goods like the dollar, this happens:
less international demand for the dollar (us debt bonds)
lower USD value versus other currencies.
so…
the fedgov has to quit printing dollars via fiat because international demand will fall of the cliff. then we have a real debt crisis. the feds cant print at will, and a lot of our international military and aid escapades end.
the US will then go into a depression with inflation. we will not be able to maintain these trade deficits and prices will go up quite a bit due to the dollar being worth less. this has a positive effect tho. it will drive manufacture back to the US in the long run, which might not be a bad thing. there will be shortages and inflation along the way.
our debt/bonds are bought by sovereign countries because there is demand for dollar denominated transactions between all countries. its a neat system, until we decide to de-bank places like russia. countries are willing to buy our debt until we play games like that. this makes dollar denominated international trade less attractive and alternatives are created.
this would create more pain than interest rates rising. however, in the end, the US then becomes independent of the world for goods and supplies.

The Latin Mass in its various guises links back to the very beginning of Constantine’s conversion and the establishment of Christ’s Church as the Roman’s state Church, post the great suppression of the Church in the 200s AD.
Where I am living in NZ there is only two churches where Latin masses are permitted within the local Bishops region. The rest of the Bishop’s churches only offer the Novus Ordo (New Order) masses that can range from faux- Angeligan through to some sort parody of a modernist mega church.
The Vatican II Council of the 1960s left the writing of this ‘novo'(new) litigy to a single, quite wicked, man named Cardinal Bernadine. The whole idea that the Mass was a sacrifice was thrown out after 1,700 years and replaced by a protestant idea about a shared meal. Even the location of the altar was changes and where the priest stood was turned around. The priest changed from leading the people (Layety ) in a sacrifice facing God to sharing a meal facing a man, (the priest) who became the centre of attention.
Some were so besotted with this new ‘fame’ that they came up with their own ‘litergies’ such were the openness of guidance as to how to celebrate what the mass had become. These priests should have been lifetime members of Actors’ Equity ! 🙂 We ended up with gay masses, dance masses, folk masses, imitations of Baptist masses (the True Baptists did it better) rock masses and even pagan masses, such was the destruction within the Church.
After 60 years and 5 deeply flawed popes there is only a bare Remnant left of actual Catholics, even if many will still claim membership in the Church, they left it many years ago. Just as was forecast. The final shock was the pagan and demonic ‘mass’ in St. Peters in Rome a few years ago. Not the first time I might suggest that the demonic had entered into St. Peters. That tragedy happened back in the 1970s behind locked doors and with at least 2 cardinals and several bishops present. Not that they were cardinals nor bishops at the time because they had automatically Excommunicated themselves and were not even Catholics.
Meantime we few Remnant of the Catholic Church, continue to celebrate the sacrifice of the Mass. In my case I drive over 200 Km (round trip) to one of only 2 Catholic Churches that have ‘been allowed’ to continue to celebrate the Latin Mass in the region where I live.
The rest of the travesty, that is the Novis Ordo (New Mass) withers on the vine, but the Latin Mass florashes with young families participating and new vocations, much to the chagrin of both the local bishop and Rome. They are however trying their best to crush the Remnant but they will not succeed even if we have to resort to heading back to the Catacombs (if only metaphorical) as Christ was quoted in the gospels when He founded His Church in Peter the Rock on which He would build His Church and the forces of evil would never prevail against It. Though smashed about by wicked men, hirelings posing as Christ’s ‘shepherds and cowards hiding behind their manifest weakness, the Remnant stay faithful and continue to celebrate the Sacrifice of the Latin Mass as it has been for the past 1,700 years.

From my current perspective the Russians will eventually grind Ukraine down and win a limited ‘victory'(of sorts) that will run through Kyiv SE bordering the Eastern oil and gas fields that were recently discovered. South to the Black sea, then west encompassing a coastal strip including the dam that waters Crimea, right up to the Romanian border, incorporating Odessa and the strip of 100,000 former citizens of Romania that staged a coup and were occupied by a battalion of Russian Special Forces.
Putin can hardly ‘occupy'(with existing reserves) that much territory let alone continue to war against what is left, in West Ukraine. Russia will be a pauper state by the time this war is over as well as an international outcast.
There was a very perceptive Chinese commentary that spelled out the Chinese position exactly viv a vie Russia’s war. The fact that the CCP ordered it taken down 2 hours after publication says it all! Swiss Re cuts fossil fuel cover for oil, gas to help climate
In its annual sustainability report on Thursday, Swiss Re said from July 2023, it would no longer provide individual insurance to oil and gas companies responsible for the world’s most carbon-intensive 10% of production.
In 2021, it had eliminated 5% of the world’s most polluting oil and gas companies based on their carbon intensity, a measure of emissions per barrel of oil or unit of natural gas produced.
Although that leaves 90% covered, the shift is an important signal from “one of the world’s ultimate risk managers,” Peter Bosshard, global coordinator of NGO Insure Our Future, said.
“Oil and gas operations need to be phased out in accordance with climate science or they may become uninsurable by the end of the decade,” he said.

“This Irish ballad was written in the nineteenth century. The words are said to be secret code for Robert Emmet (1778-1803). Robert Emmet helped plan and lead an uprising in Dublin in 1803. Forced to act early because of an explosion at one of the arms depots, the uprising disintegrated into chaos.Wearing a green and white uniform, Emmet and a small troop marched on Dublin Castle, killing the Lord Chief Justice on the way.He fled, hoping to escape to America with his fiancé Sarah Curran. He was captured and hung. At his trial, Emmet requested that no epitaph be written for him until Ireland took her place among the nations of the earth.”
Lesley Nelson-Burns
The assumption is that this was written and published shortly after Emmet was hung, to let other rebels know that they weren’t alone and the fight was still on. The “Drake” is the flag of Ireland.

Even hot dogs start at 30 cents per ounce. $4.80 per pound.

I was gifted one and used it once for hard boiled eggs. I’m a little afraid of the pressure thing but I did bring it with me on the move. It’s in the attic. When I get the buffet for the kitchen I’ll try to find room for it. I know people rave about it

Got one for the missus for Christmas a few years back and she loves it. It’s in a box in the garage.

Be thankful she doesn’t love you.
LOL

But she does. She says one day I’m gonna be in a box in the garage, too. 😀

Hey I realised why nobody loves me.
I don’t have a garage.
How can they show me affection?
@ Possum:
Also, another good food source altho not protein related – couscous. Easy AF. And cheap.
1:1 ratio liquid to couscous, boil the liquid, dump in the couscous, take off heat, cover, let sit for 5 minutes. Done. Add whatever veggies/meat you want. 1 cup uncooked yields about 3 cups cooked. It’s just very small durum wheat balls. It is NOT “Israeli” couscous which is bulgur wheat, sometimes called ‘pearl couscous’, much larger and a total pain to cook. But tasty
Did you know there was a Zelensky ‘deep fake’? I didn’t.
ON MARCH 2, the Ukraine government’s Center for Strategic Communication warned that its enemies might be preparing a “deepfake” video that appeared to show president Volodymyr Zelensky announcing his surrender to Russia’s invasion. On Wednesday, that warning appeared prescient.
A fake video emerged on Facebook and YouTube in which a strangely motionless version of Zelensky asked Ukrainian troops to lay down their weapons in a voice different from his usual tone. The clip was also posted to Telegram and Russian social network VKontakte, according to the US think tank the Atlantic Council. TV Channel Ukraine 24 said hackers defaced its website with a still from the video and inserted a summary of the fake news into a broadcast’s scrolling chyron.

So, I guess in the eyes of the White House, Hawley was “cherry picking” just the child porn cases that she presided over.

Yes, that, and Russia and Putin are anything but communists. As bad as Putin is, he saw the devastating effects of communism on the USSR and wants nothing to do with that. I guess the fact they removed the room name idolizing this idiot is a win, but it sure doesn’t seem like any real intellectual activity is present at U of Fl

What federal crime? Are you kidding me? It’s right in Federal Code x dx: “Nothing which makes a democrat look bad shall be allowed to be placed into the opposition’s hands. Federal force is authorized to remove said items from the possession of the opposition”. That Federal Code.

That right there is pretty much tacit admission by the democrats that the 2020 election was fraudulent and that the election results cannot stand an in-depth audit. … and more and more facts keep coming out regarding how various state election officials accepted certain ballots in complete disregard of their respective states’s laws.
@ AZfederalist:
Bottom line: if the election were not fraudulent, the democrats would have welcomed in-depth audits of the votes in all states, and especially the swing states. Not re-counts, but audits of the complete voting process. Instead, they sued to stop any such audits and made anyone requesting such audits persona non grata.

Perhaps Emmet was hung. Well in that case all I can say is lucky Sarah Curren ! When Emmet was hanged I think the last thing on his mind was his manhood !

Well worth a watch to get things in perspective and context.

Busted and guilty.
I almost called the Grammar Nazi on someone upthread for the phrase “chomping at the bit,” but decided to take a nap instead.
“Champing at the bit” is what a horse does when it knows the feed is coming and is impatient.
