Probably Sen. Joe Manchin, the independent-minded Democrat from the bright red state of West Virginia, who cut a deal with his fellow Democrats on the “Inflation Reduction Act,” gave them his vote with conditions — and is now getting stiffed.
More than 70 House Democrats are signing on to a letter pressing Democratic leaders to not include a side deal with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on reforming the permit process for energy projects in a bill funding the government.

And here’s a passage from Lee Harris’s Civilization And Its Enemies.
Forgetfulness occurs when those who have been long inured to civilized order can no longer remember a time in which they had to wonder whether their crops would grow to maturity without being stolen or their children sold into slavery by a victorious foe.
…
They forget that in time of danger, in the face of the Enemy, they must trust and confide in each other, or perish.
They forget, in short, that there has ever been a category of human experience called the Enemy. And that, before 9/11, was what had happened to us. The very concept of the Enemy had been banished from our moral and political vocabulary. An enemy was just a friend we hadn’t done enough for — yet. Or perhaps there had been a misunderstanding, or an oversight on our part — something that we could correct. And this means that that our first task is that we must try to grasp what the concept of the Enemy really means.
The Enemy is someone who is willing to die in order to kill you. And while it is true that the Enemy always hates us for a reason — it is his reason, and not ours.

Qantas To Phase Out Passengers…
Qantas to phase out passengers, in new plan to improve service.
In a new strategy that it says will slash wait times at airports and eliminate lost luggage completely, national carrier Qantas announced today that it will begin to phase out passengers on flights, with a zero-passenger target set for 2025.
CEO Alan Joyce likened the move to the removal of smoking from aircraft in the 1980s, and said the plan was the result of a top-to-bottom review of Qantas’s service. “We’re always looking for ways to remove inefficiencies from the system so we can offer a more streamlined, frictionless service. When we looked closely at what was slowing us down, again and again it came back to one thing – passengers”.
Joyce said responding to customer feedback was central to developing the new plan. “Our customers told us they get frustrated when their baggage ends up in a different city. They told us it’s unfeasible to wait on hold for 8-hours to speak to our call centre. By removing passengers from the equation, we’re confident these issues will become a thing of the past. We’ve listened, we’ve heard, we’re acting”.
The CEO told shareholders that the plan would eventually lead to greater cost efficiencies, with less reliance on pilots, flight attendants, baggage carriers, caterers, engineers and airport staff. But he rejected claims the airline didn’t have Australians’ interests in mind. “Change can be scary, but this is about modernising our service for the future. We removed smoking from aircraft in the 1980s and no-one thinks twice about that now. This is no different”.
Qantas will receive $1.5 billion in federal government funding to assist with the transition.
Knowing of QANTAS’ CEO Alan Joyce’s past excesses and oh so PC bullshit, I am actually wondering that this was NOT written tongue in cheek!

What in the world are they planning to do on September 24th, 2022? As you will see below, a member of the German legislature is openly warning that September 24th will be a day when everyone will remember “exactly where he or she was”. Needless to say, those days don’t come along very often. For those that were alive at the time, the death of John F. Kennedy was one of those days. And certainly 9/11 was one of those days. But off the top of my head I can’t really think of too many others. I can remember what I was doing when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine earlier this year was definitely a major turning point. Beyond that, there just aren’t too many days that fall into this category.
That is why something that a member of the German parliament just said seems so odd…

Democratic lawmakers including Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Dianne Feinstein just sent a letter to the CEO of American Express pressuring the company to start monitoring gun purchases. They essentially want the credit card company to create a special category for gun purchases — right now they’re categorized as “miscellaneous retail stores” — and use that information to report people to the police.
“Banks and credit card companies could help law enforcement preempt some mass shootings by identifying suspicious gun purchases through the implementation of a new MCC,” the lawmakers wrote. “MCCs are four-digit codes maintained by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that classify merchants by their purpose of business.”
The blowback from this is going to be interesting.

FFLs don’t “report” gun sales to anyone. They’re required to keep perpetual records of every sale or other transfer, and the ATF can inspect those records at any time. When they go out of business, their records have to be turned over to the ATF.
This new credit card code thing seems to be the creation of a new merchant category, specifically for gun stores. Most gun sellers are probably currently categorized as sporting goods stores or something similar.
This is the “enemies are just people we haven’t made friends with yet” theme thru a different prism. Humans deny disasters – until they can’t.
A World on Fire
very day, news reporters, traders, and workers of all sorts the world over wake to do their work as they always have. Part of that requires that everyone pretend that life is normal, fixable, and more or less stable. All of this is temporary. It will come and go and really not be that bad.
Strange, isn’t it? Human beings have a hard time adjusting to disaster, in their decision-making and even in their mindset. Reporters have to do their jobs as they are trained. Traders too. Everyone does. They please their bosses. They don’t sound alarms. They don’t scream and yell as they probably should.
But there is a moment in the day when the work is done and perhaps a cocktail comes out or the dishes are washed and the kids are in bed and the room falls silent. At this moment, millions and billions of people the world over know it. Disaster is all around us. We are just pretending otherwise, simply because this is what we have to do.

Doctor pulls off ‘likely the world’s first’ electric car-powered vasectomy
Electric cars are known for their lower fuel costs, emission reduction and, apparently, powering vasectomies.
Dr. Christopher Yang, a urologist from Austin, Texas, revealed his unique solution to performing a vasectomy at his clinic after the power went out — using his Rivian R1T truck.
Yang had rescheduled other appointments when the outage hit on Aug. 25, and was set to do the same for the vasectomy when a colleague jokingly suggested doing the procedure using Yang’s pickup truck as a backup power source, per NPR affiliate WGLT.
Futhermore, Yang said his patient didn’t want to reschedule because he’d already taken time off of work for the procedure, so he agreed to go through with it despite the novel power source.
Yang powered his operation by running an extension cord from the carpark all the way to the patient’s room.

Today is Kick Cancer’s butt day, with donations matched up to $1.5 million.

WASHINGTON — When John Durham was assigned by the Justice Department in 2019 to examine the origins of the investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, President Donald Trump and his supporters expressed a belief that the inquiry would prove that a “deep state” conspiracy including top Obama-era officials had worked to sabotage him.
Now Durham appears to be winding down his three-year inquiry without anything close to the results Trump was seeking. The grand jury that Durham has recently used to hear evidence has expired, and while he could convene another, there are currently no plans to do so, three people familiar with the matter said.
Durham and his team are working to complete a final report by the end of the year, they said, and one of the lead prosecutors on his team is leaving for a job with a prominent law firm.

How four private groups used their clout to control the global Covid response — with little oversight
The largest and most powerful was the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the largest philanthropies in the world. Then there was Gavi, the global vaccine organization that Gates helped to found to inoculate people in low-income nations, and the Wellcome Trust, a British research foundation with a multibillion dollar endowment that had worked with the Gates Foundation in previous years. Finally, there was the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, or CEPI, the international vaccine research and development group that Gates and Wellcome both helped to create in 2017.

Why Railroad Workers Like Me Are Planning to Strike This Friday | Opinion
https://www.newsweek.com/why-railroad-workers-like-me-are-planning-strike-this-friday-opinion-1742513
In the last few years, the railroad companies have mounted an assault on labor, costing livelihoods and sacrificing worker safety to a point where we just can’t go on.
For starters, railroad companies have adopted something called “positive train control” or PTC for short. PTC is basically autopilot for trains. It’s a great piece of technology, but since adopting it, companies have decided that the conductor role is obsolete, and you just need an engineer to take care of the train. In an effort to save money, the railroads have been pushing for a single-man crew the last few years, with the biggest freight railroads reducing staff by 29 percent.
I’m all for better technology. But it has to be safe. And there’s a big problem with eliminating the role of the conductor. One of the major things the conductor does is if there is an issue with the train, some sort of defect with a railcar, say, the conductor goes out and checks what the issue is while the engineer stays in the cab to control the train.
Biden’s dirty deal sold out Haitian democracy for migrant deportations, former envoy says
The Biden administration scuttled Haiti’s plans for free elections and backed a de facto dictator in exchange for his willingness to accept deportees, America’s former envoy to the country says.
Daniel Foote, the Biden- appointed former US special envoy to Haiti, says the administration has supported Dr. Ariel Henry — who took power as both acting prime minister and acting president after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise — because he was willing to accept Haitian migrants who have rushed the US border.
https://nypost.com/2022/09/14/biden-sold-out-haitian-democracy-for-a-migrant-deal-ex-envoy/
I don’t understand the game. Leave our borders wide open so Haitians can walk in, kill an election in Haiti to install a dictator who will accept the Haitians we want to deport – but we’re not deporting anybody?
I hope I don’t look as stupid as I feel, cuz I really don’t get this.

https://seekingalpha.com/news/3883258-fedex-stock-sinks-12-postmarket-as-volume-softness-leads-to-q1-earnings-miss
FedEx (NYSE:FDX) stock sank 12% postmarket on Thursday after the firm reported prelim. Q1 results that widely missed estimates, hurt by global volume softness that worsened in the final weeks of the quarter.
FDX also withdrew its FY23 earnings forecast.
The company expects Q1 adj. EPS of $3.44, well below consensus estimate of $5.14. Q1 revenue is projected to be $23.2B vs. consensus estimate of $23.52B.
FedEx Express results in Q1 were hit by macroeconomic weakness in Asia and service challenges in Europe, resulting in revenue shortfall of ~$500M relative to FDX’s outlook. FedEx Ground revenue was ~$300M below its forecast.

Wave Of German Insolvencies Picks Up Speed…”Tenfold Increase in Gas, Electricity Prices”
Blackout News here reports toilet paper maker Hakle has filed for insolvency, citing “increased energy costs”.
“With a tenfold increase in gas and electricity prices, which we had to accept within a few months, we are no longer competitive in a market that is 25% supplied by imports. We see an urgent need for political action to get energy prices under control immediately,” said Reiner Blaschek, CEO of ArcelorMittal Germany (Financial Market World).
Another industry sector facing extreme hardship is the bakery industry, which relies heavily of affordable energy. According to Blackout News: “For bakeries, the energy crisis is now worse than the Corona pandemic, according to industry sources. ‘We have the problem as a micro baker that we have to adjust our prices to the raw material and energy prices, of course, which also burdens the customer, if he is also a bit tighter on cash,’ says an affected baker from Heilbronn.”
One baker in our local area has seen his monthly gas bills go from 3000 euros earlier this year to 11,000 euros!
