The Fed will not be issuing a digital dollar anytime soon, says Powell
Jerome Powell, Chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve, has silenced the calls for a U.S. central bank digital currency (CBDC) to be issued in the near future, saying that the central bank has “not decided to proceed” with the issuance of a CBDC for the time being.
“We do not see ourselves making that decision for some time,” he said Tuesday, speaking remotely on a panel about the role of central banks in digital markets to global financial leaders and crypto regulation experts attending a conference in Paris.
Powell indicated that the central bank would instead be working in collaboration with Congress and the executive branch to evaluate the policy and technological issues. This includes a multi-year period during which the Fed will focus on “building public confidence in our analysis and ultimate conclusions, which we certainly haven’t reached yet.” [ya think?]
The central bank Chair also said the Fed would need approval from the White House and Congress to proceed with a digital dollar.
As for what the central bank will be looking for in the creation of a CBDC, Powell identified four key characteristics: intermediated, privacy-protected, identity-verified, and interoperable.

Half a dozen representatives of the neo-Nazi-led Azov movement in Ukraine are currently visiting the United States, taking meetings in Washington and reaching out to Ukrainian Americans. Three are veterans of the far-right Azov Regiment who held out for numerous weeks in the besieged Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol.
Among them is Giorgi Kuparashvili, a co-founder of the Azov Regiment and a leader of its Yevhen Konovalets Military School, named for the founder of the fascistic Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. According to journalist Leonid Ragozin, “The school functioned outside Ukraine’s system of military education — one of many reasons to suspect that Azov was highly autonomous and never truly integrated in [the] armed forces.”

The U.S. navy still sucks. In this case literally. Something called JP5.
The U.S.S. Nimitz is docked until further notice
According to multiple sources, JP5 was sucked up into the potable water while the Nimitz was dumping fuel and circling at the same time. I don’t profess to know anything about sailing or life on an aircraft carrier, but according to people who do know, dumping fuel requires central control to be notified so they can tell the auxiliary machinery room to stop making potable water. Go to minute four in this Youtube video to see how sea water is fed into the ship.
Allegedly the Officer on Duty (OOD) and the Conning Officer (an officer on a naval vessel responsible for instructing the helmsman on the course to steer), had the ship doing donuts during night watches for helm and lee helm training while the ship was dumping fuel.
Personnel from the reactor went to the bridge to have it put into the deck logs, which will make it easy to prove upon investigation.
This was all an accident. Accidents literally happen all the time in the military, but the command team’s response after the fact is the issue. The incident was covered up, and the people in charge lied to the media. They claimed the water was safe to drink and denied anyone got sick, though we were told by dozens of sailors that they had been denied medical care despite the fact they were nauseous and had extreme bouts of diarrhea.

Romney, Utah’s junior senator, has declined — and even refused — to endorse Lee’s reelection bid. Lee is the senior senator from Utah.
Senate Republicans are becoming increasingly alarmed by the decision, noting that even though Senate Republicans may have their differences on policy, they typically stand united against Republican opponents.
“I respect [Romney], and I understand that each state has its own dynamics, but I do not understand why he is remaining neutral,” one Republican senator said anonymously. “Whatever our differences, we all try to support each other around election time.”
Romney’s refusal to endorse Lee could boost his lead opponent during the Senate campaign, the Never Trumper and failed 2016 presidential candidate Evan McMullin. Romney’s move has put Senate Republicans on defense in a state that Lee should win handily.

It is fortunate that as of the current moment, electric vehicles constitute only about 100,000, out of nearly 8 million vehicles registered to drive on Florida’s roads. What if they all were electric, the (impractical) dream dream of greenies?
Depending on how heavily loaded they were, even assuming everyone had a full battery charge, cars from southern Florida would start running out of juice after 100 – 250 miles. They would then have to spend hours at recharging stations, which would rapidly be clogged with other cars and trucks waiting their turn, since an electricity “fill up” can easily take an hour or more, as compared to a couple of minutes for gasoline. Cars waiting to be charged would spill onto the highways, potentially blocking traffic.
Those cars that ran out of juice on the highway would block traffic. Even assuming that emergency service vehicles could get to them (unlikely if the entire fleet were electric cars), towing a portable generator (powered by fossil fuels, of course) and recharging the stalled vehicles would take plenty of time, as well, further blocking traffic. The stranded cars would, of course, have no air conditioning, no wipers, no GPS.
In all likelihood, the highways would become vast parking lots, trapping their passengers wherever they happened to be stalled, waiting for the storm and flood waters to reach them, unable to get to safety.

I take issue with that kind of statement.
While I fully agree with the basics of that post it is vital that these facts are not ” embroidered ”
A stranded EV with zero power in the main battery that provides traction would have a working GPS etc at least for a while.
EVs generally have a secondary battery that powers the electronics.

He figures that gun-fodder he ‘ain’t!
Asked to house his family in NZ and has applied for an English language school visa to at least get him into the country. IF he can find an airline seats to get his wife (a Moldavian) and their two babies. My daughter will give them her town house and my daughter will move into our Auckland apartment for as long as it takes. He has a sister in Auckland but she is living with two kids and a boyfriend plus her parents in a 2 bedroom apartment, so that’s a non-starter. Whether they can find a plane out of Europe this side of Christmas is a serious problem. Everything is booked solid. Meantime he’ll be officially AWOL in a few more days time!

@ darkwords:
@ Possum:
To be totally clear about this, once the elec power fails (which tends to happen early in a hurricane situation) nobody is pumping gasoline either.
If you’ve ever looked at prepping tips, when heavy weather is incoming and you expect to lose power, one of the first things you do is fill the bath tub w/water. Municipalities use electric pumps to distribute the water thru the network.
eaglesoars wrote:
One reason to hang onto your ole land-line phone. Just as long as the emergence supply to the exchanges keeps working, when the power goes south!
Putting a grid attached solar power system on the room of the new cottage just in case! We get a ‘free’ 30 Kwhr per day over the 3 hour period 9PM-midnight, as well as being able to sell back to the power company excess power once the 17 KwHr batteries are at full charge. The system is capable of stand alone power supply if the grid totally goes south and the energy cost is fixed in NZ Dollars so we are energy inflation proof.
Given what is happening globally I thought it was a good idea to be as independent as possible. We now have water, sewage (septic tank and transpiration bed) and soon power independence. Food is manageable with 50% of grow our own fruit and veges and an endless supply of fish off the beach 50 feet away. Large chest freezer holds our meat reserves so we should be OK. Gasoline supply however is a real problem.
@ eaglesoars:
Yes. That is when I lived in Iowa I had a small 5500W propane generator.
Got the propane supplier to fit a regulator and a tank type fitting onto the outside of house. LOL was first time anyone asked for one!
In normal use could attach my gas grill to it. No more buying the 16lbs tanks.
If needed could attach generator. Never needed to.
What prompted this was four days without power, some in same area were without power ten days. Due to ice build up on wooden power pols snapping them. No quick fix for that.
Anyway those with gasoline powered generators quickly found out that no power = no pumping gas.
1000 gallon propane tank in back yard used for heating can do much more.

Bottles last about 3 months each for powering the gas hobs for cooking and the water heating. We can fall back with microwaving and if all else fails the wood burning potbelly space heater and cast iron casseroles.
