We’re getting in touch with a lawyer on Monday. When we filed the dispuate with the cc company, he texted me and gave 24 hours to withdraw or he’d contact his lawyer because we were ‘making a false (fraud) claim to a bank for the purpose of financial gain’ and that he’d agreed to reimburse a certain amount (no, the only number he gave was $750 which isn’t even close to right). He then said ‘I have alreadyh adreed to give you the amount we both previously agreed to in these messages.’
God, what a friggin nightmare.
I thought of a way I could review our deck company without saying anything negative.

We were flying NAT Tracks which required VERY accurate navigation as the traffic was doubled the normal density to fit everyone in to the tracks.
This arrogant piece of sociopathic shit (AKA the skipper) who was running this flight had loaded an extra 10 tonnes pf gas on in LAX because he just thought that there was a small chance of poor weather at London Heathrow. That had the effect of putting a ticking ‘time-bomb’ in our aircraft’s performance that stopped us climbing when we needed to climb before we got rid of Canada and picked up Iceland control. Did I say that the Canadian controlled couldn’t speak intelligible English but only HIGHLY ACCENTED French / English gobbledegook, which when combined with the solar interference made getting a clearance almost impossible.
In the end all three of the crew independently heard and separately copied down a clearance that had a transposed word in ‘Frenchenglish’ amid terrible radio conditions that we repeated back to this French Canadian controller that he confirmed (mistakenly… that put our B-747 and the 300+ people down the back, at the same piece of stormy night sky as another B-747 coming the other way at the same height. We could have killed 650 people!
I was the least experienced crew member and the only one who accepted full responsibility. In the resulting enquiry the Chief Pilot and the enquiry members disagreed and sent me back to LAX where I was posted with my family. As the Chief Check and Training Pilot opined to me as I left the enquiry room …. ‘There but for the grace of God go any of us!’ The sociopathic skipper did not fare quite so well! 🙂
These type of incidents happen because a whole set of separate incidents and happenstances come together at the most inopportune time!
We were lucky and I just threw that B-747 over into a 45 degree banked turn to get out of the way of another aircraft, that was just 30 seconds away, on the dark and stormy night, from impacting us, over the Canadian East coast near Gander.

As I was departing and chatting to my Union Rep about ticketing back to LA, I heard the Chief Captain’s voice raised as he wiped the floor verbally with this particular sociopathic captain. I couldn’t help cracking just a tiny smile. That’s when the B-747 Chief & Training Captain walked past and smiled, told me to buck up and that ” There but for the grace of God goes any of us”, and shook my hand.

The Santa Fe DA’s office apparently has some shitty prosecutors who slept through the class in law school where they learn that you can’t charge someone with something that wasn’t in effect as of the date of the crime. That 5 year sentencing enhancement didn’t go into effect until several months after the shooting took place.

On the other side of the spectrum are the Natal Intensive Care Units. I used to visit one. They had 4 babies to a room. Many of them born addicted. Nurses would hold them 1 hour a day. A person could get certified to visit the NICU and be a baby holder. I was with a nurse at one baby station and she told me the mother abandoned her. She would get physical touch only one hour a day. Cost of the fentanyl outbreak. That was pre covid. I doubt they did better during covid.
