NCAA Football week 7 and Rugby World Cup 2023 OPEN

It’s an Open Thread!

We are $1200 for $1000 and a bunch of bets were made last week. 3/5, so back to $1300 FOR $1000.

Let’s see what’s in store for week 7 besides the Ireland V New Zealand match that we will get to later.

None of the games are piquing my interest. So, no bets this week.

Waitaminute…

8 Oregon @ 7 Washington 3:30 PM. Won’t matter. Georgia will beat either of these pretenders by 21. but, what the hell, the always overrated Ducks are 3 point dogs to the dogs (Huskies), heh. Anyway, Bo Nix is the Ducks QB, and he is very, very good. Ducks beat the spread (I always lose when I go this way).

Florida @ South Carolina 3:30 PM. The Gators are only 2 point favorites? I’ll take them to cover. That spread just looks weird.

10 USC @ 21 Notre Dame 7:30 PM. ND is at home in a classic rivalry game and the Irish are 2 point favorites. They won’t cover. ‘SC has a hell of a QB who will be playing on Sunday.

RWC 2023

Saturday at 1500 eastern, two of the best teams in the world are going to square off in the knock-out round of the Rugby World Cup. It’s Ireland v New Zealand. If yinz have access to Peacock online do watch it. this should be one for the ages. Let’s add this to the ledger: Ireland is 2 point faves to win, I’m going for NZ to beat the spread. I have my reasons, even though ireland are the faves to win it all.

There are other matches, but none that promise to be this great, this week…except on Sunday:

France (at home) v South Africa (1500 eastern). SA is the most physical team out there and they are playing against a great France team on French soil. again, on peacock, do watch if you have a chance. This one will get very chippy unless the ref clamps down early. SA are 2 point dogs in vegas. They should be able to get under the French skin and cause a lot of penalties anad beat that spread, France loses the story pretty fast after they have been belted in the mouth a few times and then get dirty and play stupidly.

Just got home from work. Stumbled across an article about the store I work in.

    https://cityviewmag.com/rick-terry-jewelry-designs/

It’s not pictured in this article and I didn’t know what it was until today. There is this ‘artwork’ on one of the walls I just assumed was paper mache or something. Looks ‘Aztec-y’. It’s circular, about 4 ft across, cream colored. I dunno.

Turns out it’s an actual Aztec calendar.

    Carved out of white jade.

    From Brazil

The thing probably costs more than my house.

    Good

All six states voted no to a proposal to change the constitution to recognise Indigenous citizens and create an advisory body to the government.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said defeat was hard: “When you aim high, sometimes you fall short. We understand and respect that we have.”

Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the result was “good for our country”.

The referendum, dubbed “The Voice”, was Australia’s first in more than a quarter of a century. With almost 70% of the vote counted, the “No” vote led “Yes” 60% to 40%.

Ok, I could use some input/ideas.

I want to make a sandwich spread out of chickpeas.

First step is to spin them in a food processor to get a medium chop. I don’t want it to be like peanut butter, more like tuna salad. A bit chunky.

Then, some mayo I think. Make my own. A garlic aoli maybe?

    lemon juice, just a bit

soy sauce? just a bit, like 1/4 teaspoon

    maybe dijon?

    cumin?

On toasted sour dough bread with – cucumber slices?

    suggestions welcome.

Well, I was supposed to be in Denver to see Sadie Johnson and Kara Grainger this evening. Cody had other ideas. I tried to drop him off for boarding, and he decided to snap at two different staff members. They kicked him out. None of the other places I called could take him on no notice (it’s Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, which doesn’t help).

One of the all time best games of Rugby Union played. Two teams at the height of their powers leaving it ALL on the park.

I have NEVER seen a final 3 minutes where Ireland threw 40 that’s FORTY phases of pure aggression against an All Blacks side defending a slender advantage but the Black Wall held not just to Full Time but for another 4 brutal minutes of extra time until a penalty finally broke the hearts of the Irish. UnF***ing believable Rugby. This game is worthy of a Grand Final in its intensity aggression and skill sets on parade from BOTH teams. You’ve got to feel for the Irish as that Quarter Final jinx and the 600 lb gorilla on their backs goes to an eighth cycle. The Irish are the best in the world yet when it comes down to wanting to win it’s the ABs yet again. This is truly remarkable athleticism and both teams left everything on the field. Both had NOTHING left at the end.

By the way the NZ Conservative handed Labour Party hacks their arses last night after an election where all the pundits got it WRONG yet again!

In Aussie the Aussie Constitutional change YES / NO election, went from the communist Left + Corporates+ Labor Left governments (Federally and in ALL States) + Unions+ Media+ Billionaire funders pushing a YES agenda, full of covert agendas LOSING 40% to 60% to the NO vote funded by mom and pop voters demanding clarity stripped of covert agendas, and the SWAMP’s hidden agenda

The YES vote started off 70% to 30% before the people started asking questions. Then the real ‘1984 Orwell’ plans began to leak. Even Aussie Aborigine voted overwhelmingly for a NO change to the Constitution.

All around a great night ‘Down-Under’

There is no chance that Hamas could have broken through the security barrier around Gaza and gone on a killing spree for 8-26 hours before the IDF arrived. This means Israel let them through, which means the USA told them to, which means everything happening now was planned.

The funniest thing on twitter is this thing where somebody sez IF YOU DON’T AGREE WITH ME UNFOLLOW ME NOW!!

Or the subset of the above who tell their followers OH WE ALL AGREE ON ‘X’ SO THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

People take themselves so seriously as tho they’re actually important.

Who the actual fuck needs validation from social media from people they never have and never will lay eyes on? And they are ‘influencers’?

Go scrub a floor. Get a job.

Nobody pays attention to the birders, who take astonishing pictures of birds all over the world, or the architectural historians who document paintings, structures, etc. before they’re lost to the elements.

There is such value there but for the most part, people just are there to prove to others and themselves that they’re a big deal.

    How very odd.

My favorite bit of total lack of self-awareness:

He continued: “He called to execute people who shoplift from stores, a very minor crime, one to take seriously, but certainly not one worthy of execution…He has demonized a variety of people in his various outlets, on Truth Social and in his various discussions in front of crowds, and this is related to a term called ‘stochastic terrorism’… what it basically means is when someone who is very powerful targets and demonizes individual groups in the public, at least a small number of their followers will take them as marching orders. And what is highly likely going into the 2024 election is that a small subset of Trump’s very well-armed and extremist base will try to kill people.”

You mean, for example a president going on national TV, standing in front of a red-lit Independence Hall, giving a speech in which he essentially called everyone who didn’t vote for him an enemy of the state? Is that the sort of targeting and demonization you’re referring to?

I loved philosophy. I loved Socrates and Voltaire and the whole nine yards (but still don’t “get” Kierkegaard). Got to PSU and what a wake up. The posturing and outright dishonesty was mind slamming.

The term ‘stochastic’ has absolutely ZERO meaning in this context. It’s a statistical term, CW can weigh in.

Strange shit is happening down here. Getting knocked out (deep anaesthesia and a camera down my gullet) for one reason and finding something completely different as it turned out. They did discover that there was never an impediment in my thoracic channel and the imaging guy should have no problems getting an imaginer down my gullet to image my heart in real time as they do a patch-up job to make me bulletproof to permanently block off an amateur in my Left Atrium against possible clot formation at some future occasion. In and out of hospital in 30 hours. What the specialist gasterologist with his fancy little camera did discover was a gastric ulcer just sitting down there someplace minding its own business . He’ll go and kill it off over 3 months as a plus. Talked the heart procedure with a specialist cardiac nurse and had loads to questions and he was very open and clearing answering the what and how questions. A 0630 kick off that involves an imaging CT probe and video down my gullet to guide the small memory metal (Titanium and Nickel) mesh up via my Femoral Vein inside a probe sheath that can fit inside a micro needle that can stretch to admit the mesh bas it passes between the Right and Left atrium and then return to micro size as they back out. He was clear and concise answering my questions and I am very comfortable with their ‘way smart’ procedure. He also gave me a backgrounder on the specialist cardiac surgeon and the anaethistist imager. Told me to give the gym a miss for a week and then don’t get back to heavy slow to exhaustion sets for the rest of November. Just do the normal gym stuff.

    Suits me!

Biden Admin Orders Banks Not to Reject Illegal Immigrants’ Loan Applications

The Biden administration has issued a warning to U.S. banks and other financial institutions that they can’t reject illegal immigrants’ credit applications based solely or predominantly on their immigration status.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) said in a recent announcement that rejecting illegal immigrants for credit cards and various types of loans just because they are noncitizens is unlawful.

The two agencies stated that they were issuing this warning to financial institutions “because consumers have reported being rejected for credit cards as well as for auto, student, personal and equipment loans because of their immigration status, even when they have strong credit histories and ties to the United States and are otherwise qualified to receive the loans.”

Specifically, the agencies cited the provisions of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA), which protects credit applicants from discrimination based on such characteristics as race, religion, sexual orientation, and national origin.

The agencies argue that protections afforded by ECOA, as well as other laws, extend to alienage and so banks that have blanket policies to deny loans to illegal immigrants may be breaking the law.

Umm…I could be wrong, but isn’t it just common sense for a bank to not loan money to someone who’s subject to being deported at any time?

Not really. Here’s a partial, short-form answer—and I recognize that “short form” in this case is rather long, but I can expand on these broad-brush observations if you wish:

American Jews vote reflexively Democrat and reflexively Left for many reasons.
One is that many of the Jews who came here—by no means all, but many—were already Leftists. The more “enlightened” Jews, the Jews more dissatisfied with their lot in Europe, particularly Eastern Europe, were overwhelmingly Leftists of one sort or another. They considered the entrenched Old Regimes of Europe to be their enemy—rightly—and had cast their lot with Napoleon and assimilation going back to the beginning of the 19th century.

Here, some shed their Judaism eagerly, as the Reform assimilationist movement had done in Europe when Napoleon’s conquests emancipated the Jews from the ghetto, and gave them citizenship (something which went back and forth in Europe throughout the 19th century; with Napoleon’s defeat, many of the emancipations were revoked). Even those who remained nominally practicing Jews ditched strict Shabbos observance in favor of getting jobs; remember that 80 or 100 years ago there was not only no chance of taking off the latter half of Fridays when the days grow short, but that people were expected to work half-days on Saturday.

Anyway, here the Republicans were identified with the Old Regimes of Europe, since back during the days of the big immigration industrialists and other big owners tended to be Republican. The Jews got into the habit of voting Democrat as the big-city machines (as opposed to the rural political machines) tended to be Democrat.
Such symbolic things as Woodrow Wilson appointing the first Jewish Justice of the Supreme Court, Charles Lindbergh being Republican, Truman recognizing Israel, and the execution of the Rosenbergs being accomplished under a Republican administration, also confirmed the habit.

The debased vestigial Judaism followed by most non-observant Jews crossed over into “social justice” a long time ago. That, too, makes a difference.

    @ eaglesoars:

Glad to clarify. Note that there are lots of urban ethnic groups, like the Irish, who are still wedded to the Democrats for reasons going back well into the 19th century; Jews are in no way unique in this.

I’d point out further that if the grand- or great-grand-son of one of those early-20th-century Jewish immigrants has abandoned whatever vestigial Jewish observance his zeyde (grandfather) still retained, but he remembers that Zeyde “always voted Democrat,” that “ancestor-worship,” feeble and silly as it is, becomes his way of honoring his ancestors and connecting with the withered remnants of his “roots.”

Similar to the Jewish experience; the Titans of Industry who ran American companies were, back then, largely Republican—and they did not hire Jews.

My grandfather had ambitions of becoming an engineer, and actually managed to get into an American college despite a heavy Eastern European accent. One of his professors said to him, “You’re a Jew; nobody will ever hire you. Don’t bother.” So he dropped out and went back to the fur trade.

Likewise—lest you think that tale a mere century-old relic—my father’s college roommate went for a private-industry job in the late ’30s/early ’40s. The interviewer called him a “Jewboy” to his face a few times too many, and the roomie finally told the interviewer to go f*ck himself, and walked out. He was later called up by the prof who’d arranged the interview, because the prof had gone out on a limb by merely suggesting a Jew in the first place. That’s one of the reasons—aside from the fact that they were the best—that the atom-bomb project had so many Jews; because private industry refused to hire them.

That sort of family history does not end in a generation; it is passed down.

Oh no, I don’t. When we first moved to Mt. Lebanon, a suburb of PGH – wealthy, snotty, etc., we lived in a neighborhood full of Jewish families because they had been red-lined out of the wealthier enclaves. 1964 or so. I became very close to several Jewish girls and their families. A year or so later, around Christmas, because they all wanted to know what having a Christmas tree was like, I had a tree trimming party for them. Mom baked cookies, hot chocolate, etc., and we got small gifts for each of them, little bracelets from Gimbels where Mom worked. In return, I was invited to each of their houses for one evening of their Hanukkah celebration. Jackie’s mom was from France, married an American service man, so I got to hear a bit about what her family went thru during the war. She hid in Paris the entire time. Elen’s family was Polish, I believe. Her father was a furrier and had a BEAUTIFUL fur store in the mall. Survived the camps. Lynnie’s dad was a VP at Gimbels so he and mom knew each other. BUT if there was a sleepover and some of us were expected to be at our respective houses of worship the next day, the Christians could mix and match (I was allowed to attend Catholic services and Catholics were allowed to go to whatever church was closest)but no synagogues for us and no churches for them.

But vet bills resulting from most of the trash dog food on the market are extraordinary. Big 70Kg Red Kangaroos will try to drown dogs. Don’t try to corner a kangaroo to they can grab you with their forelegs by your shoulders and lean back on their tails and use their rear legs claws to disembowel you. Always leave them a way to escape and mostly they will exit the scene. Watch for them on back roads at dusk when the can end up through your car windscreen and in your lap. Hitting a ‘roo at above 20 MPH will wreck your car kill the ‘roo and come through the windscreen and can kill you in the impact.

Wallabies and smaller grey Kangaroos can also hurt you by crashing into your car especially at night. If you’re driving on back roads at night make sure that you fit ‘Roo Bars’ to the front of your car to limit car damage and keep them from coming through your windscreen and killing you.

Assume that EVERYTHING in Oz wants to kill you and take reasonable care not to hang your arse out over the edge when handling the fauna.

    🙂

Especially those really cute little octopuses with the dayglo blue rings. Stand on one of those and you’re automatically dead as there is no antidote. Even those cutely weird platypus, Don’t maes with them as they have a nasty poisonous spurs behind their rear legs. Always check under the toilet seats of ‘long-drops’ before using, by lifting the seat with the toe of your shoe and look for red back spiders.

Assume that All snakes will kill you is the best advice. Even carpet snakes can get grouchy and will bite you if they get pissed off even though they are non-poisonous. Diamond backs and some green snakes are also non-venomous but by assuming ALL snakes are deadly you can’t really go wrong…. mostly because almost all Aussie snakes are deadly. Especially baby Common Browns. They are inexperienced and inject their whole load of poison and that’s enough to kill about 4-5 men. Adult Common Browns are more circumspect and inject just enough venom to just kill you once. Taipans the most poisonous of all snakes …. well just don’t go to Queensland ever, as they have a nasty disposition.

What a week. Grandmother died, head gasket began to give out, jeep developed a parasitic battery drain that it took my until Sunday to find. (Much to late to take the 3 hour drive to the funeral on Saturday, luckily we managed to cram 8 people in an expedition.)

I’m assuming head gasket since my coolant in the overflow is now black. Parasitic drain was from a broken heat exchange door actuator. Simple fix, just unplugged the damn thing. Might make heater run weird this winter but Oh Well.

Media keep asking how Hamas can keep firing missiles into Israel with all the Israeli bombing. The answer is that Israel is being told by Biden via Blinken not to hit schools, mosques, or hospitals in Gaza even though Hamas is firing missiles from those sites. And apparently Biden is trying to dictate all kinds of terms with Israel as a condition of receiving certain kinds of military weapons and other needs. Now we also know why the invasion of Gaza has been delayed.

    Look at the pic. Astonishing

Imagine being able to make stone translucent.

Giovanni Strazza possessed that extraordinarily rare artistic skill. His bust of the Virgin Mary, “The Veiled Virgin”, executed in flawless Carrara marble, is one of the most impressive feats by any sculptor in history.

Strazza’s “wet drapery” technique continued the legacy of other Italian sculptors like Giuseppe Sanmartino, who produced mind-bending veils from marble a century earlier – the famous “Veiled Christ” is a canonical example.

The tradition also dates back to much earlier sculptors well-known for carving intricate folds, in particular Renaissance artists like Michelangelo and ancient masters from Greece’s Hellenistic era.

But in the mid-19th century, Strazza took the technique to its extreme. The subtle layered effect he achieved allows the viewer to easily discern Mary’s facial features from the delicate veil, and at the same time creates the illusion of total weightlessness.

How he created something so soft and fluid from solid stone, using only basic hand tools, is a mystery.

Here’s the narcissist lunatic Laura Loomer who isn’t getting enough attention/fuel

After I vote for President Trump in the primary and the General in 2024, I’m leaving the Republican Party.

I hate the Republican Party to be honest.

None of the elected Republicans are doing anything to fight for President Trump.

And when I leave the party, so will everyone else because if Donald Trump doesn’t get back into office, the Republican Party is OVER.

Do you think the low IQ mentally handicapped idiots in GOP leadership understands this? I think these morons were all Dropped on their damn heads when they were babies, because none of them seem to understand how serious this is. None of them have a sense of urgency. None of them understand how this is it. If we don’t get Trump back into office, AMERICA IS OVER AND A REPUBLICAN WILL NEVER AGAIN BE ELECTED IN AMERICA!

NONE OF THEM DO ANYTHING TO FIGHT FOR PRESIDENT TRUMP SO NONE OF YOU SHOULD FIGHT FOR THE GOP.

The GOP is a JOKE. They are willing to let Obama appointees literally GAG Donald Trump in an election year.

I don’t want to be a part of a party full of cowards and traitors.

Screw these people if they won’t fight for Trump.

Everyone should leave the GOP if they don’t start fighting for Trump.

We won’t have a country if we don’t fight for Trump. And if we don’t have a country then there is no purpose for the silly GOP.

I just can’t stand any of them. It’s hard to explain how much I hate the GOP.

Bibi was supposed to address the nation at 8:00 pm last night, so Elisheva joined me in the study. The TV had been on forever, the news droning and droning, the emerging stories so horrifying that you could start to be numb.

But Bibi didn’t show, and by 9:00 pm, Elisheva said, “I’m going upstairs to bed. You should turn off the TV and come up, too.”

Before we turned off the TV, though, some Home Front Command officer was interviewed about the heating up Lebanese front. Hezbollah in Lebanon, of course, makes Hamas look like cub scouts. If Hezbollah gets into this —with their thousands and thousands of precision missiles than can hit any bridge, any hospital, any power plant, any airport, anything in Israel—this is going to turn into something very different.

Israel has promised time and again that if Hezbollah attacks the Jewish state, we will “return Southern Lebanon to the stone age.” No one doubts that. No one here has any problem with that. We just wonder what it will be like here during the days that it takes to get that done.

So what was the Home Front Command telling us?

Stock up on water. A lot of it. Make sure you have dry food. And DO NOT take the handles off your safe room doors.

After the horror stories Israelis have been hearing about how terrorists tried to turn the handles from the outside as terrified husbands and wives used all their might to hold the handle inside, Israelis have been sharing social media clips telling people to take off the handles, so that once you’re in, you’ll be safe.

But the Home Front says that’s dangerous. You also have to be able to get out. DO NOT take off the handles, he repeated. Find something in the house that’s the right height that you can brace under the handle so it can’t be moved down into the unlocked position. And make sure you have your food and the water with you in there so you don’t need to open the door to get it.

    Lovely.

I believe in compromise. I think that Israel should offer every “Palestinian” $50,000 a head for each (verified) family member, or something like it, to leave Gaza and/or the West Bank, and sign a quitclaim against any claim on the land or citizenship in exchange—which would drop to $40,000 a head the next month, $30,000 the next month, etc. There would be a one-month grace period after the quitclaim payment dropped to zero—after which the remaining people would be summarily expelled.

Sadat was only willing to sign a piece treaty with Israel on the condition that they NOT give him “back” the Gaza Strip. Israel also offered the West Bank back to Jordan, which said “Thanks, but no”—even though they’d illegally occupied it for 19 years.

If you look at an atlas from the British Mandate era (I happen to have one), it says that the entire area of what is now Israel—“from the river to the sea,” in current parlance, which includes both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip—was, under the British (who took it from the Ottomans whom they defeated in WWI) open to Jewish settlement, while the larger part of “the Palestine Mandate” (which later became “Transjordan,” then “Jordan”) on the other side of the river was, under British administration, closed to Jewish settlement.

In other words, the entirety of “the river to the sea” of the “Palestine Mandate” was open to Jewish immigration/settlement. Prior to Israeli independence, it was the Jews who were called “Palestinians”; the Arabs were called, and called themselves, “Arabs.”

What is wrong with Bill Kristol? This man is a serial liar. His mother was a highly respected historian (Gertrude Himmelfarb) and his father, Irving, was one of the intellectual founders of ‘neo-conservatism’. Neither of them would have recognized this utter bilge from their POS offspring.

I came to D.C. to work in the Reagan Administration because (to oversimplify) it was pro-Constitution, pro-U.S. global leadership, pro-military, pro-Israel, pro-democratic capitalism, and pro-American dream. And that’s why I now support the Biden Administration and Democrats.

He destroyed an iconic American magazine voice (The Weekly Standard) and apparently thinks because he is from NY, DC should suck his dick.

Fortunately, he has exactly zero influence anymore. But man, what a come down from parents who were giants in their day.

I remember when Trump was running and he started some ‘underground’ group that called him evil and issued a ‘manifesto’. It was all going to be VERY SEEKRET. The National Review covered it and then all THOSE articles disappeared. The author was a woman whose name I can’t recall. Anyhoo, that was the beginning of ‘THE BULWARK’.

And the dumbest people in D.C. are associated with it. It’s like a Q Anon group for people from Harvard/Yale.

We are seriously missing people like Christopher Hitchens, Robert Novak, William Buckley.

And the one offspring Buckley had turned out to be an utter failure. Christopher.

He wrote 2 books that were comedic sendups of The Great and The Good. Everybody loved them.

Then he wrote one that trashed his parents and their marriage.

He hasn’t been heard from again.

And that should be the fate of Bill Kristol.

Well, that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

If I may, I’d like to recommend several other useful reference works:
    A Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary from the mid-20th century;
    A Webster’s Biographical Dictionary, which has capsule biographies of all sorts of people that one has, has not, or only-vaguely heard of;
    A “Familiar Quotations” book, whether Oxford or Bartlett’s;
    A copy of the Variety Cavalcade of Music, 3rd Edition (1969, the last year it was issued), which not only details the popular songs in America from the mid-1600s to 1969, but contains well-written historical notes for each of those years;
A copy of the “Oxford English Literature Companion” (I think that’s the name), which not only has entries discussing English and American authors, but entries which discuss their works by title, and the characters in them.

George Orwell was a very complex character. He came from a lower-middle-class background (he was a scholarship student at his prep school and at Eton), which left him with an enduring hatred (and envy) of the more well-off, entitled boys he went to school with.

He was committed to “democratic socialism” even towards the end of his life—but his first book, “The Road to Wigan Pier,” was almost not published because it savaged the lefties who were trying to “uplift” the miners he was writing about, and although he fought for the Loyalists in the Spanish Civil War, he had to flee for his life when the Stalinists took over and suppressed the militia in which he was enlisted.

Though Orwell was the political opposite of a conservative like his contemporary Evelyn Waugh, he and Waugh are almost indistinguishable as far as cultural/behavioral preferences are concerned.

I similarly despise the supposed “morality” of Israel giving evacuation warnings to a sovereign government that, as a matter of its own stated endgame, attacked Israeli civilians to facilitate the extermination of the Jews. As “pro-Palestinian” protesters in Western countries — in a remarkably transparent rebuke to the multicultural program supported by the global elite as a way to weaken wealthy Western nations while appearing benevolent — gather and chant “gas the Jews,” or “from the river to the sea,” it should be frighteningly obvious that the project of trying to reason and assimilate medieval tribal allegiances into propositional nations was and is a fools errand. It is not a “blessing of liberty” to enable the conditions for your own civilizational suicide because doing so grants you some temporary plaudits from those who, when the time is right, have every intention of wiping you out and subjugating those of you whom they don’t murder. In fact, its an astounding display of cultural arrogance and personal sanctimony — with the latter being a point of extraordinarly pride to those who, in different circumstances, would lecture us on the particular sin that impulse represents.

Here is the harsh truth as I see it: It’s time the West believes in its own civilizational exceptionalism

The number of keyboard warriors out today is amazing. My favorite was the one who insisted that it was “clearly” a US manufactured GBU 72. That’s a 5,000 lb bunker buster.

    @ lobo91:
Truly a target rich environment. Obviously the IDF wants to break up the task into bite sized pieces that can be managed with the limited manpower and logistics resources available. Whereas the main threat is obviously Hezbollah backed up by Iran and between 130,000 and 150,000 rocket currently available in Southern Lebanon, some of which can range all of the way to Southern Israel including the breeder reactor in the Negev. Hamas are just ‘cannon fodder’ designed to tie down IDF forces in Central as Gaza’s Hamas rocket inventory is already half used and it’s only a couple of weeks into this war. Remember that Hezbollah has TEN times the rocket inventory of Hamas and the quality and accuracy is MUCH better than the ‘amateur hour’ rocket stocks of Hamas. Hezbollah has the capability of overwhelming the Israeli ‘Iron Dome’ defences by sheer weight of fire, and shortages of Israeli AAA rocket defence stocks and logistics problems.

Remember also that the last time the IDF and Hezbollah ‘crossed swords’ in South Lebanon, it ended in a draw! We seem to be in a holding pattern right now, as the Arab nations try to decide whether they are going to once more go down that ‘well-trodden’ path of ‘joint action’, against the common enemy Israel. This war is under cut by the changing system of potential peace accord talks, between Saudi and Israel. The rest of the Arab polity, globally, can’t afford to lose that Saudi support, as Saudi finances a huge chunk of Arab funding against the common Arab enemy Israel. Where the real action is happening politically is the space between Israel and Saudi. Saudi remember also has another religious war ongoing between Arab Sunni and Shi’a Persians (Iran) that has been on and off for a millennium at least. Occasionally that religious war is side-lined when a common foe is engaged (like Israel), and then picked up when the war(s) are settled temporally.

Remember too that when a nuclear armed belligerent is involved, that ANY time when an existential war erupts, the chances of a nuclear release WILL happen, before a nuclear armed State is destroyed, is 95%. The ‘Sampson Option’, as demonstrated vocally by a Fox News contributor just 2 days ago. Now in the mix is a second potential nuclear armed belligerent, Iran , with two weapon loads of ‘weapons grade’ fissile fuel already stored, and the potential in just months of an additional four weapon loads, of weapons grade fissile material, multiplies the chances of a nuclear release more likely than unlikely and very close to 100% guaranteed. The weapon manufacture technology already resides in Tehran.

Israel has always seen itself as a 4 warhead target and will respond to prevent that from happening. Having two nuclear armed belligerents facing each other doesn’t normally guarantee a nuclear exchange. After all the West and Soviets survived the Cold War for 40 years. India and Pakistan have not used their weapon stocks in anger either. BUT in the case of Israel and Iran that Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) metric doesn’t apply, to a RELIGIOUS War scenario. Especially when Iran has doctrine that demands the destruction of the State of Israel, as a basic tenant of the Shi’a Religious Canon. Sooner or later either Iran, and possibly Gaza / Southern Lebanon as well, will be consumed by nuclear combat that may even spread to the rest of the Middle East, if Israel faces their own Gotterdammerung, armed as Israel is, with 200+ nukes. The appearance of the Twelfth Iman notwithstanding.

I am NOT taking bets that this or some future war will not end up with destruction of hundreds of millions of people in the Middle East. All of the pieces of this Middle Eastern puzzle are falling into place unfortunately, and with Religious War in the mix the augers are not good for a logical MAD outcome happening. Religion and nukes are an unholy and volatile mix that has a logic all of its own.

    Alas!

The CARPARK beside the hospital was hit by a way-ward Hamas rocket that was on its way towards Israel when it’s combustion chamber exploded and it was this device that hit the hospital carpark.

Unless 500 people were jammed shoulder to shoulder in the hospital carpark there was not enough space for 500 people to have been killed in the explosion of terrorist off-course rocket. The casualty numbers are another LIE.

He apparently jammed on his brakes but the car was still moving when it hit the elephant behind its back legs. The elephant then sat down on the front of the car and broke it where the windscreen meets the bonnet (hood) , broke it right off. When I turned up the guy was still sitting at the wheel and was as white as a ghost. No sign of the elephant who had wandered off into the bush. I took the driver to the pub / motel iIwas staying at and poured 5 slugs of whisky down his throat.

    * My Armoured Personnel Carrier driver and I was retrieving a wire across a creek when a huge Red Bellied Black Snake who’d just swallowed a rabbit was spotted. The driver wanted to run over it but I thought that that was mean. So he picked up a large tree branch 6” in diameter and slammed it down on the snake who laid still. About then I thought I’d select a small stick and see if it was still alive. I hit it on the head and found out the wrong way that is was very much alive and extremely pissed off. Unfortunately I didn’t have a time keeper with me as I definitely broke the World Record for the 100 metres dash!

*I was wandering about a bush track near Kurnell south of Sydney when I looked down and realised that mid step I had just stepped across a very large Tiger snake. I had one foot on one side of the snake and the other foot on the other side of the snake. Somehow I leapt vertically and tore off into the bush . The snake was probably smiling

    * while snorkelling in Botany Bay south of Sydney about 1 mile North of there Captain Cook first landed in Oz in 1770. Near Bear Island where the second Mission Movie was shot. I swam clockwise around a 30 ‘ rock just awash with the incoming tide and came face to face with a shark coming the other way around the rock counterclockwise.

I was more surprised than the shark as I managed to leap vertically out of the water and onto the rock in one smooth movement! 🙂

    * After marvelling at the Falls on the Zimbese River in Rhodesia I thought that it might be a good idea to look at the night rainbow as the full moon was shining through the spray off the Victoria Falls. I wandered up the track that I had discovered during the day and wondered what the huge ‘nests’ were all about then forgot about them. I walked both ways and saw the night rainbow but noted that I was the only person doing that. I did wonder about that at the time. When I got back to the hotel I told everyone what i’d seen and they were shocked. It seems that at night the hippos come out of the river at dusk and sleep in those huge nests. Hippos are nasty animals and can attack humans and bite the in two. Didn’t notice one as I was too bust looking at the moon shining through the spray.

    * Left Salisbury to a bit of solo exploring and headed for the Elephant Hills up country up against Zambia and the Zambezi River. Joined an elephant sightseeing van but should have twigged that all was not exactly as it seemed. Half the VW Combi van was full of family of the driver, and the paying passengers were advised that first we had to collect some joiners first. It seemed that we didn’t have enough $$$$ yet to fill up with gas so we would act as a local bus first picking up and dropping off locals first until we had enough $$$$ to buy gas that would get us to where the elephants hung out. We finally got the $$$ and the gas to go find the elephants. That we did. A herd of a dozen or so females and really cute baby elephants and a massive Alpha female that was systematically destroying a huge tree for reasons known only to her. She seemed more that a little pissed off however. The herd was on one side of the dirt track and the Alpha female was on the other side of the track destroying her tree. The driver kept edging closer and then backing off when the large female started getting upset. This went on half a dozen times until the driver saw his chance as the large female moved to the other side of her tree. The driver gunned the VW and as we passed the massive female she just stepped out from behind the tree and started screaming at us and chasing us down the track. I was in the back seat of the Combi van and there was just 1.5″ of glass between my nose and 6 tonnes of VE RY angry elephant charging behind us. Her trunk was about 6′ from the back window and she was in a full charge, trunk reaching out towards me and her huge ears spread either side like huge sails. All I could think of was …. please don’t miss a gear change mate or that elephant is going to be in my lap. She chased us for over 100 yards before seeing us off and went back to destroying her tree. 🙂

    * Kev, my host, who had spent the last 3 years as a mercenary in the Rhodesian War his lovely wife and two little went on a Bri (Bar-b-que) out by the main Salisbury water supply in Rhodesia. Such a fantastic place but now totally ruined now and a hell hole. What a shame. Anyway I decided to climb up a nearby Khope (stone hill) near the place where Kev was busy cooking the meat. We were always well armed and Kev never went anywhere without his SLR semi-auto 7.62mm rifle and 6 30 round mags, and Sally always carried her .38 revolver with ‘dum-dums.’ I was unarmed! WRONG ! Meanwhile I reached the top of the Khope and there was a terrible stink. I yelled for Kev to come up as there was something dead up there. He climbed the Khope unarmed too (WRONG) and smelt the air. He IMMEDIATELY turned and sprinted off the Khope. …. If Kev was running then I figured I needed to run as well …. even faster. A huge leopard had been stalking me and i never even saw him but I certainly smelt him. I used Kev’s binos to spot him on top of the Khope later. He was huge and in the prime of life. We ate our Bri but kept an eye on our friendly Leopard throughout our Bar-b-que. In another life Kev had been my NZ Regiment’s , The 3rd Bn Auckland & Northland (Countess of Ranfurley’s Own) weapons training instructor. 🙂 The war had been over for 2 whole weeks but not everyone knew or wanted to know that it was all over. There was a LOT of ‘getting even’ going on everywhere and everyone was still walking around tooled up for trouble.

8 the War in Rhodesia had just finished and as usual Perfidious Albion had screwed the white Rhodesians over totally to curry favour with the new Marxist President Mugabe of the Zippra terrorist army. As a parting gift a company of Rhodesian Light Infantry took their Brigadier General fishing on the Zambezi river just down stream from the Kerbeba dam. We went armed to the teeth however and the Rhodesian army insisted that I formally needed to join the Rhodesian Army for the duration of the trip …. just so I could protect myself if needed. The trip went fantastically. No trouble at all driving the 300Km up complete with 14 mine protected trucks with assault boats and outboards on top. A 128 man Company went ‘fishing’. The fishing was incredible and we caught heaps of tiger fish. Alas someone from Zippra with a snit mined the track between the river and the tar roads South. The first two trucks passed the mine but the third truck hit the mine and lifted it into the air and rolled it over. A Russian anti-tank mine. Everyone in the vehicle was strapped in and it had anti-mine V plates and roll over bars, but everyone in the vehicle blew their ears and three were badly wounded and one later died. What a sad place Rhodesia became.

I have an Africa story too.
Was in Johannesburg near the airport on one of those overpass thingies that was a single lane. You have them in the USA too.

You know the ones, where you are hundreds of feet in the air, concrete barrier on each side before descending onto an interstate.

Was on it, doing about 40 mph when a tumbleweed passed me. The tumbleweed went down the ramp in front of me, did a perfect merge into the traffic.

Then changed lanes and got behind a semi truck. Left me in the dust….

Stayed at the Elephant Hills hotel amid around 3,000 elephants. Now down to a few hundred as after the war Zippra and Zanla terrorists went elephant hunting with machine guns, looking for bush meat and just to kill something …. anything… The hotel rooms opened directly onto the veldt and you were protected by a VERY deep trench surrounding the hotel but out of sight camouflaged by the slope of the ground. Lion and elephant, zebra antelope and wilderbeast just wandered past your room whilst you dined on magnificent breakfasts. Decided to go animal spotting. Early start at 5AM, just me in an open top Landrover jeep. NOTHING . I do mean NO ANIMALS at all. They were smart and stayed in the bush and thorn until it warmed up a bit and by 8AM the place was humming with animals. Saw a Leopard in a tree (I was so very lucky as most Rhodesians haven’t seen a wild leopard in the African bush on the high veldt in their lives). The leopard climbed down his tree and began to stalk a massive antelope called a Zebu. The biggest of all antelope, it stood 6′ at the shoulder with twin straight horns that could be used with lethal effect. The stalk went on but I’m sure that the Zebu buck know that the Leopard was about. Just before the leopard broke cover the Zebu buck turned to face his leopard. the huge antelope lowered his head and stamped his hoof The leopard just stood up and looked around as if he was just kidding. He wandered off and climbed back into his tree and waited for a smaller breakfast to come by!

    Magical!

We used to drive from Lote where we lived native style on the top of a jungle covered hill about 8Km west of Vanimo on the coast where my airplane was hangared. Vanimo was an old German New Guinea colony until the League of Nations stripped it off Germany and gave it to Australia. The road between Lote Mission Station and Vanimo town forded 3 streams through concrete fords and huge Papuan Black snakes used the concrete to warm up in the evening. We’d drive down to town in the Mission truck to go to watch movies on a rugby field, with the projector operating off a generator protected from the rain (it rained a LOT) and shining onto a large white tin screen. The movie ‘The Longest day almost became the longest night. It was a 5 reeler. and we watched reel #1 reel #3 reel #2 reel #5 Reel #4 Reel #5 (it seemed a bit anticlimactic by that stage and FINALLY reel #5. Then the rain was so heavy that we couldn’t get back across the fords so we watched horror movies until dawn. The PIRF (Pacific Island’s Regiment) who owned the projector were scared shitless by back to back Dracula movies! It was truly The Longest Night!

We used to call the Papuan Black Snakes…. ‘ judder bars’ and they were tough and driving a truck over them didn’t seem to hurt them much at all! Just watch out that you didn’t bring one home with you as they could also get picked up and hang on inside the truck’s mudguards and by that stage they would be more than a bit testy!

Took my baby brother swimming. He was just 6 years of age and I was 16. I took him to Little Bay behind the Coast Hospital where there used to be a leprosarium, just on the approaches of Botany Bay where Captain Landed in Oz in 1770. we used to play and fish behind the Coast Hospital and constructed various boats and rafts over the years. For reasons known only to a 16 year old I also took my pride and joy a 20 lb weight belt, fins mask and snorkel. Why a weight belt you may ask? Who knows what goes in a 16 years old head?

Anyway I decided being 6 was old enough that we two should swim the 500 metres between the entrance of Little Bay. 6 years old … of course he could swim a mere half a kilometre! So off we paddled until my baby brother piped up with Peeeete I’m getting a little bit tired. OK says I just hang onto my shoulders and I’ll tow you the rest of the way. Dump my prized weight belt NO BLOODY WAY mate. What felt like half an our later I dragged my baby brother AND weight belt onto the rocks on the other side of the bay. I was totally hacked and could have drowned both of us…. but I still had my 20 lb weight belt! Priorities!!

Did I mention that a guy was taken by a Great White at that very spot where my baby brother said that he was getting tired. Great Whites used to follow the oil tankers into Botany Bay where the ships used to dump all their spoiled food before making anchorage inside the Bay?

    Who knew?

    65 polizei injured???

man, have they gone soft. ‘riot season’ in Berlin’s neukolln/kreutzberg districts was something to behold in the 80’s. the polizei were viscous, after giving a few warnings to disperse, mind you. i went with the polizei a few times to ‘observe’ it was rather enlightening…tear gas, water cannons loaded with CS, followed by a horse charge with ‘hit me twice sticks’ (long rubber batons with a spring inside and a lead weight on the business end). once, tho, i popped up out of an u-bahn station right into the middle of a riot, and I was on the wrong side! it took a couple of days for the CS to clear out of my sinuses and eyes. admittedly, i wasn’t supposed to be there (kreutzberg), but, the turks there had the best doner kebabs.

i had to explain to my boss (the RSO) that i got lost on the u-bahn. he just laughed at me and said that that was highly unlikely given that i have lived there in the middle of the city for years at that point. it was the classic ‘have you learned your lesson’ talking to. after that, we would go in pairs and take one of the state dept staff cars.

the best doners are worth risk to life and limb.

In the book HOUSE TO HOUSE, about the fighting in Fallujah, the author said they ALWAYS found kit. They were using some form of meth. It made them insane but they stayed awake until we ventilated them.

Had a GREAT day at work. Learned a lot about the mechanics of jewelry repair as I spent 2 hours watching one ring being re-sized. I mean, seriously? When to just tighten prongs and when to replace the entire head. When to say NO to watch repair. How to use a head loupe to look INTO tiny diamonds (need more practice on that) Etc. etc.

There’s a gala tonite for all the businesses that won “Best in [category]” votes in Knoxville and the store won it this year and last. The owner lets all the female employees borrow whatever jewelry they want for the evening. So we spent a few hours deciding between diamonds, rubies, etc. No, I’m not an employee so I’m not invited. Maybe next year. But in a truly lovely gesture, they absolutely refused to charge me for 2 pieces I had repaired, because “You earned it”. Several hundred dollars worth.

Oh, yes, 2 of the dogs were in, Pearl and Mellie. The Fed Ex guy sneaks them treats behind Rick’s back.

Now there’s no way to determine if future NYT tweets are from the NYT or from an imposter.

Since NYT is a pathological liar to begin with……..

I’d rather see the verified lies and the subsequent vivisections. Same with Pallywood.

    @ eaglesoars:

He’s the Majority Whip. Before that, he was chair of the NRCC.

Not that he seems to have done anything to brag about in either of those positions, but he’s not some random backbencher

    You are mis-guided.

Somewhere there is a video of that SOB chasing Ben Shapiro down the street on their way to synagogue – the family, including Shaprio’s children.

He is Laura Loomer in trousers.

I know him from Virginia. He’s an asshole.

and the very shallow research I’ve done so far is that he is Soros backed.

    We will see

I know nothing about him, beyond what I mentioned, and have no opinion either way. I was just pointing out that he’s actually part of the House leadership team.

Home from work. Today’s education was in metallurgy. I spent most of the day with Matt, who actually fabricates the pieces that Blake designs with a customer (using CAD, which is very cool). Blake makes a rubber-like prototype using specialized equipment and Matt makes the actual piece.

Jewelry gold always has a paired alloy and Matt decides on the alloy. That round ring on your finger? Well, gold doesn’t want to bend. And the way you get it to pair with the alloy so that it does bend involves chemicals that YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE AROUND. Like boric acid and all sorts of gases and – it is just a witch’s brew of poison.

Which is why there is this room in the shop that is quite noisy when Matt is in there. It’s the ventilation system. And there is an entire chain of waste management that goes along with it.

Matt also likes to cook, and as his dad is from Louisiana and my Mom was from New Orleans, we discussed the subtleties of making a roux.

    Good times.

Oh. Pro tip. If you frequent a business, don’t step out of line with the associates ESPECIALLY male-on-female improper stuff. Cuz they will put a note on your file. Yes, you have a file. And every time you darken their doorway, you will be ‘shadowed’ by one of the male staff. You won’t like it.

    @ doriangrey:

    Your point is well taken.

I can’t decide what the piece is about. The feckless Biden admin, or the reckless Iranians. They both seemed to get the same emphasis.

For me, the value of VDH is the prism he sees things thru. His educational/experiential background is not mine [Captain Obvious at your service]. So even tho he and I arrive at the same place, he saw things on the journey I missed.

On a similar vein, Jordan Peterson. He beautifully articulates things in a way I simply cannot. But he’s very practical. No soaring revelations, just common sense.
