I certainly hope so as the guy is a waste of rations! πŸ™‚

My Godson is apparently still on Austin’s personal staff at the 5 sided puzzle Palace in DC. One of the two LTC on his personal staff. Can’t wait to get clear and head off to Va and the War College as a senior instructor. Austin’s illness was kept VERY quiet and he’s been not well for some time. I am guessing that Austin is ‘dog tucker’! πŸ™‚

NZ is sitting right in the WRONG place. Christchurch has only just got back to normal after a decade putting the place back together again. The last thing the ‘Shake Isles’ needs right now is another major 7 + shake.

Wellington is overdue for a major quake as well. They have prepared as much as they can. The central Emergency Co-ordination sits right on the top of a major fissure but the buildings are mounted on massive shock absorbers so fingers crossed!

Clapton wrote the song with Jim Gordon, the drummer in his then-new band, Derek and the Dominos.

The Allman Brothers connection came from the recording of the song. Duane Allman played the slide guitar part.

Like him or not, Ted Cruz is uniquely qualified to discuss the Supreme Court, and he goes into an analysis of the arguments Trump’s legal team have put forward in the appeal of the Colorado case, along with what he expects to see happen. Spoiler: He predicts that there’s a 60-70% chance that it will be a unanimous decision overturning Colorado’s ruling, probably on the grounds that they didn’t properly prove that Trump engaged in an insurrection (very different from saying that he did or didn’t, which is something they’d never get a unanimous decision on).

Her autobiography was heartbreaking. What an utter bastard Clapton (and George Harrison) was.

I saw an interview with Clapton where he said he doesn’t know if he actually loved her but he knew he was – his word – obsessed with her

And the way George Harrison behaved..I mean what a garbage run. Harrison was a worthless human being.

    No way

If they let the Colorado ruling stand, that will end Trump’s run in its tracks. The other 49 states will have no choice but to remove him from the ballot, because that will be saying that he did, in fact, engage in insurrection.

If they overturn it on substantive grounds (saying that Trump did not engage in insurrection), they can look forward to gaining about 6 new officemates recruited from the ACLU, because the Dems will make good on their threats to pack the court.

The only middle ground is to overturn it on procedural grounds. Make no judgment either way on Trump’s guilt or innocence, and tell them to come back when he’s been proven guilty of something in a real trial.

Someone managed to find all the individual videos of The Warning from their 2015 performance at their school in Monterrey and edit them all together for the first time. It’s interesting to see how far they’ve come, but also how much talent each of them had at an early age. Ale was 10, Pau was 13 and Dany was 15 at the time. There are 10 songs (four covers and six originals). I was particularly impressed by Ale’s bass in their cover of Hysteria, starting at 10:09 or so:

The late arrival of the USA to BOTH World Wars and the vast profiteering from those death feasts extends to this day, as the US Alphabet Agencies continue to raise wars globally and then allow the neo-Eloi to profit of those wars, whilst again requiring the Morlocks to do the required dying. From my perspective nothing has really changed since the 1830s and probably back to the minor battle of 1812, with a distracted Britain, otherwise distracted by the French! Again!

How can any independent Nation State trust the USA with ANY promise? Every now and then we see the true face of the USA, as the mailed fist slips from beneath the silken glove, as happened in the 1960s in Australia over the quickly truncated nuclearization of an independent Australian thermonuclear security guarantee. Britain felt the US knife twist, post WWI and WWII when Britain felt the US need to further impoverish Britain, to seize the money and power from a weakened British Nation. Not that Perfidious Albion was ever a paragon of virtue with it’s various controls over 60 + Nation States over 150 years. The one shining virtue of which the British can be actually proud, is the counter intuitive destruction of the global Slave Trade by the British Navy West African Coast Squadron, even though it cost Britain financially, and was done for the very best of intentions.

I have contacted the company to be sure this is true but if it is……

    White Bakers Banned From Competition

The King Arthur Baking Company is hosting a competition for bakeries and the winner gets a lot of dough.

    It’s called β€œBaking Pitchfest 2024.”

Winners get mentorship from other bakers and financial support for their bakeries.

It sounds like a great opportunity for the pastry and pie crowd. But there’s just one catch. No white people are allowed to enter the competition.

Only bakeries that are owned by persons of color are allowed to participate.

β€œBaking Pitchfest 2024 is more than a competition; it’s a platform for empowering People of Color to break barriers and redefine the narrative in baking,” Kathleen Casanova told Baking Business.

That’s because King Arthur is trying to foster inclusivity and creativity by providing equitable opportunities for people of color.

β€œPitchfest 2024 is a testament to our commitment to fostering a more inclusive baking community and empowering creative POC leaders in the industry,” said Molly Lawrence, the company’s corporate social responsibility manager.

In other words – white bakers must be excluded to achieve maximum inclusivity.

Chocolate cake good. Classic white cake is bad. And whatever you do, don’t do Martha White or White Lily Flour.

Organizers say Baking Pitchfest is more than just a competition; it’s a platform to empower bakers of color and to β€œincrease racial and ethnic diversity in the field.”

This idiot wouldn’t know Econ 101 if it bit her in the ass. Which I’m pretty sure it has done. Close the borders

America is in the middle of a full-blown housing crisis. There are a lot of ways to measure it, but I’ll start with the most basic: We are 7 million units short of what we need to house people. What can we do? Increase the housing supply. It’s plain old Econ 101.

The Teatro Metropolitan shows, and the professionally-shot, multi-camera video that was made of them, are considered the ultimate live recording of The Warning (at least so far). Pretty much a perfect performance.

I just watched a remastered video of one of their shows in a club in Houston on the same tour. One camera, shot from the front row, on a small stage. No costume changes. No giant video screens. Pure rock ‘n’ roll:

Right now Ecuador is experiencing an all-out cartel takeover. They’re executing hostages, taking over prisons, and stormed a news station on live TV.

I used to live in Ecuador. My dad took an oil job there for a year and half while I was in middle school. Nothing like this was happening. Over the past 20 years cartels and drug traffickers have become far too powerful and more dangerous than ever.

    California fucks up again

Here it is: the β€œwealth tax” β€” 1-1.5% of ALL your appraised global holdings (except real estate) for rich people (the ones still remaining, who pay the little tax we still have). This INCLUDES the paper value of businesses or assets you haven’t sold and can’t sell to pay the tax.

So let’s say you started a private company that’s doing well. Its shares aren’t listed so you can’t sell stock. If the state believes your company is worth more than a certain amount, they can force you to pay 1-1.5% of its total value every year. Even if you don’t have the cash because this is a hypothetical valuation. So people who have wealth on paper (as defined by the state and we all know how good they are at math!) could be bankrupted to pay tax and may have their businesses and assets seized by the state.

The tradition of Vile British Teeth dates back to the British colonial importation of masses of sugar from the Jamaican sugar-cane slave plantations. The proles were encouraged to ingest quantities of sugar (i.e., tooth-rot) and quantities of rum (i.e., distilled tooth-rot) to create docile, underfed domestic slaves in their underheated hovels.

If for nothing else at least Britain left in their wake a functioning Civil Service and a basic operational legal system. Between using other nations as quarries and food producers, as well as volunteer soldiers. What Britain did that forever gave it everlasting thanks was the destruction of the global slave trade, that went against commercial logic and power. It was simply the right thing to do regardless of the costs and then unleashed the Royal Navy to kill anyone who broke the British law regarding trading in slaves across the rest of the globe, regardless of what the rest of the world wanted.

For that alone Britain deserved the name Great Britain, regardless of all of the other acts it perportrated

Not exactly. Eventually the poor may have been underfed but they were not slaves after the Crown made slaves illegal in Britain and after the African Squadron of the Royal Navy ‘insisted’ that other States should stop enslavement or die under British Naval cannon-fire

The former Guardsman, now serving in the Army Reserve, said that as the joint chiefs chairman, Milley had no legal role in the chain of command; he was simply the president’s senior military advisor. However, Milley leveraged his staff in the Pentagon and exploited his relationships with other generals he mentored and favored for promotion so that he ran the Army as his own feudal possession.

I’m amazed at the number of people who don’t understand that. Probably 90% of Americans believe that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs is actually in charge of the military. He isn’t in charge of shit. If he were, his title would be Commander. All he runs is his office staff. Same goes for the service chiefs.

When Milley set himself up as the defacto commander-in-chief following the election and told the senior leaders at the Pentagon that they were to take orders from him, rather than the president, he should have been arrested. The fact that nobody was bothered by it tells me that everyone who was aware of it should be cashiered, if not prosecuted as accomplices.

‘Prince Harry is NOT a Living Legend of Aviation’: Ex-Royal Navy chief slams ‘pathetic publicity stunt’ after Duke beats British astronaut Tim Peake to win aviation award – as top colonel says royal wasn’t even at the controls of Afghanistan helicopter

A defence chief has hit out after Prince Harry beat history-making British astronaut Tim Peake to be named a ‘Legend of Aviation’ for his work flying an Army helicopter in Afghanistan.

The Duke of Sussex, 39, has been recognised for the gong ahead of fellow veteran Apache gunship pilot-turned-astronaut Peake, 51, who in 2016 became the first British astronaut to walk in space during a trip to International Space Station.

Harry will be inducted next Friday at a glitzy awards ceremony hosted by actor and aviation ambassador John Travolta in Beverly Hills, California and where VIP tables can cost Β£30,000.

The Duke bagged the award despite only ever being ‘number two’ in his helicopter, acting as a gunner in Afghanistan – with his gong success today branded a ‘pathetic’ publicity stunt by Lord Alan West, the former head of the Royal Navy.

Reacting to Harry’s accolade, the Cold War naval commander told MailOnline: ‘He is not a living legend of aviation. To suggest he is, is pathetic. It makes the whole thing seem a bit of a nonsense if they’re willing to pick someone like Prince Harry.

‘He is not a living legend. There are lots of people who deserve to be called this but not Prince Harry. I find it extraordinary he has been picked.

‘He didn’t carry off any great exciting feat of amazing flying skill while flying for the Army.

‘They’re just trying to get publicity. They know it will cause a stir. I find the whole thing really rather pathetic.’

The carnival-sideshow poster at the top of the thread reminds me fondly of the late, lamented Riverview amusement park—Chicago’s version of Coney Island.

Like Coney Island, it had multiple roller coasters, a “parachute jump” tower, a funhouse, many shooting-gallery and three-throws-for-a-quarter try-your-luck booths where you could win cheesy prizes, and—a freak show, the front of which was covered with posters like that one. I remember the barker going on out front about “the Alligator Girl” (“a girl like any other, but the good Lord chose to place upon her the hard, heavy, tough skin of an alligator! Come inside and see her, and hear her fantastic story!”), and showing off the “teaser act,” a fellow he called “the Human Butter Churn,” who, stripped to the waist, would ripple his stomach vertically, and rapidly, from left to right.

Riverview was torn down—fell prey to development—sometime in the late ’60s. A great cultural loss.

Followup to #185; if you want to see a truly bravura carnival-barker film performance, check out the great Lee Tracy in the film “The Half-Naked Truth,” starring Tracy, Lupe Velez, Eugene Pallette, and Frank Morgan.

Velez is a carnival cooch dancer, involved with Tracy, her “barker,” and Pallette is the carnival strong man. They take it on the lam when locals decide to bust up the carnival, and Tracy fast-talks Velez into a role in “Merle Farrell’s Follies,” a nod to Earl Carroll’s “Vanities” and Ziegfeld’s “Follies,” by passing her off as an escaped Turkish harem girl.

    The film is hilarious.

That’s the work of Fred G. Johnson.

    The Picasso of Circus Art
Fred G. Johnson’s (1892 – 1990) banners were used to illustrate A Century of Progress for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair His artwork also advertised the Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey and Clyde Beatty circuses.

Hired by banner painter Harry Carlton Cummins to clean equipment and stick up banners, Cummins taught Johnson how to paint them, which he did, producing as many as four a day. The art is fast, subjective and made to deadline.

Yes, and it’s fascinating, despite the lame plot. I have book somewhere that has brief biographies of the more well known “freaks”. Many were deformed and/or retarded, and the circus freak shows gave them self-respect and avoided being institutionalized. Were they exploited? Absolutely, but they were well taken care of.

My favorite story was about Simon Metz, aka Schlitzie (the basis of Bill Griffin’s Zippy the Pinhead comics). He had the mental capacity of a 6-year old, wore the smock for hygienic reasons, and knowingly played an idiot. When show patrons threw spare change at him, he’d collect it all and throw it back for laughs.

While on his death bed, his last words to his manager were “Yeah. We really fooled ’em.”

When I was a kid, the elevators in Marshall Fields’ flagship Chicago store were run by mentally-challenged folks who were …trainable to the extent of being able to push the buttons to take people to their required floor. They earned a living, of sorts, and had a useful job which gave them a purpose in life.

“Compassion” and self-service elevators destroyed this private-sector aid to the handicapped.

Correct. Harry was the s-l-o-w one and it showed. He was renowned for pissing off his Squadron members and getting grounded whenever some Arab said that he was being targeted specifically. He was also renowned for getting that ‘just right’ PR shot like expending .50 cal ammunition into an empty desert aspect so make him look menacing.

Pretty pathetic too when the Squadron sent him home early not because he was actually in danger living in the squadron, but because he was a pain in the arse. Sure he chanced his arm when he flew as a front seat gunner but any threat saw him back in squadron pushing paper!

Wear the New Guinea ribbon on the left because we were still playing naughty with the Indonesians over the Irian Jaura / PNG boarder, even though the Commander of the Indonesian Tiger Division paid a visit with his staff and associated wives, over the

The ribbon was called the Distinguished Unit Citation back in 1943 when PNGVR as a Unit was awarded. It was recast as the US Presidential Unit citation and it had a gold surround on a blue field. PNGVR gave me one to wear on the right as it 25 years after PNGVR was awarded it, as a Unit citation. Back in WWII PNGVR were mostly ‘stay behind’ coffee planters , Kyups (government Patrol Officers), and Australian officials who initially manned coast watchers stations covertly, and eventually evolved into an over-strength Battalion Group. Post war PNGVR became tribal Companies of an over strength Battalion Group. I was a Platoon Commander in Delta Company based out of Wewak but stretched all the way West along the north coast as far as Vanimo where I flew out of. After I left TPNG before Independence PNGVR was shut down as the new PNG government were afraid that tribally based company groups would be a danger to the new nation, as sedition was being touted by some.

Big banks suing the Fed? Yowser

Big banks have hired one of the country’s top trial lawyers and are preparing to sue the Federal Reserve β€” a nearly unthinkable challenge β€” if sweeping new industry regulations aren’t watered down.

Eugene Scalia, the son of the former Supreme Court justice and a well-known conservative litigator, is quietly drawing up a lawsuit seeking to block the proposed rules on behalf of the Bank Policy Institute, a trade group that represents JPMorgan, Citibank, Goldman Sachs, and others, people familiar with the matter said. It would be the first time in recent memory that the industry has sued the Fed, and a departure from standard halls-of-power persuasion efforts that try to avoid antagonizing its chief regulator.

The stakes are high: Banks warn they’ll pull back from lending, particularly to small businesses and borrowers with lower incomes or credit scores. Some of that is posturing, but the rules would eat into bank profits, pushing them in some lines of business below the returns they have promised shareholders.

We are under a winter storm watch starting tonite. Not nearly as severe as in the midwest, but for TN? The snow won’t melt for 2 days, which is unusual for this area. Will send hubby to Home Depot to get snow blower (cuz we are too old to shovel)

We are having the exact opposite problem. High 20s C to low 30s C temps with 98% humidity. The damn grass is visibly growing as we’ve had 8 days of sunshine and today is the first overcast and it looks like some rain at last later today. Brought my weed-wacker back from the ‘beach’ and will attempt to hack back the ‘growth’ a bit. There is still a huge Totara log cut up in huge rounds laying in a garden awaiting transportation to my wood stack at the ‘beach’ for the winter. I’ve been working through the medium sized bits every time I head south to the ‘beach’ but there are only big rounds left now and I can’t lift them without help and I don’t want to break my 4×4. I need a two axle trailer and some help carrying large 2 -3 foot rounds from the wood pile to the gates. My 4×4 couldn’t handle the slope to the gates towing a full trailer load, so we’ll have to get help carrying the wood bit by bit to the trailer.

It’s not cold yet. It’s in the 40sF. The coldest it has been since we’ve been here is 10F. The coldest it’s expected to be thru Thursday is 29F. I’m from Pennsylvania, we call that ‘winter’. Ice is my concern if one of the dogs has an emergency can I get her to the vet. It will be too cold for the girls to go out for a day or two, so SOMEBODY is going to have to be sedated. That would be me.

The people in the west/midwest are just getting levelled tho. Lose power under those conditions and it’s worth your life.

THAT can be serious weather Eagles when you are subject to Continental weather and it can get seriously cold. Here am I moaning about 30C and 98% humidity! All I have to do is have a shower and it’s fixed!

Got a major tree on the ground in Auckland that will keep us warm next winter. It’s beautiful wood and it’s cut into rounds and it’s hardwood and HEAVY. Too good for burning but we have to get rid of it somehow so it’ll at least keep us warm next winter. Not allowed to sell native hardwoods on the open market but you can give it away or use it yourself. I will give 6 large rounds to a bunch of wood thinners who can make beautiful wooden bowls out of them and maybe they will give me one or two platters or bowls back as a gift!

Totara is a very strong hardwood and Maori used to carve 100 warrior ocean going canoes out of them because they have natural oils in them and resist rotting in the sea.

    Quilla??

It’s a hardwood that doesn’t float. There used to be huge stands in Northern New Guinea as well as Oz where it was used for furniture and outdoors pieces. The logs taken from the New Guinea forest were brought down to ‘Steamships’ timber yard in Vanimo township. Polish freighters used to anchor in Vanimo Bay and the logs needed steel pontoons to support them to float them out into the bay where the freighter’s cranes lifted the logs into the holds and stacked some onto the deck. They were selling the dressed timbers for coffins in Queensland of all things!

Twenty Five years ago. How time flies when you’re having low altitude fun on a damp night in Hong Kong in a Boeing 747-200. At least the usual crosswind from the right was thankfully quiet.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PCOcyt7BPI

and once more at night but without the crosswind and hand flying close to high-rise buildings and surrounded by mountains. Fly an IGS approach to 650 feet and level out knowing that in the dark is a bloody large mountain within 20 seconds of you. Look for the flashing light of the ‘rabbit’ (the only flashing lights allowed in Hong Kong. Follow the curved line of flashing lights through the high rise and look for the approach lights. Two reds and two whites on each side of the runway and you knew you were in the ‘slot’ . Lay off 10-15 degrees into the potential cross wind from the right. SIXTY …. FORTY … Ten … close the thrust levers and begin to round out. Kick in a wee bit of left rudder and line the nose up with the centre line. Lower the into wind wing to compensate for crosswind place the right wheel bogies onto the ground. Feed in some more right aileron and allow the left undercarriage touch the runway. Full right aileron to stop the starboard wing from lifting in the crosswind and lower the nose wheel onto the runway. Reach forward and select full reverse thrust and keep the fuselage straight with rudders as the aircraft slows Cancel Reverse thrust and change hands and grab the wheel steering handle to the right, use just enough braking to slow the aircraft before you reach the end of the runway and turn off the live runway. Ask the crew to clean up the wings lifting the flaps and slats and cancelling the lift dumping speed brakes. Ask ..”whose shout is it at the pub?”… (depends on how smooth the landing was!) πŸ™‚ Taxi to gate given by ground control.

    Now do it at night!

    πŸ™‚
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6X6HNOKSQUs

Ahhh ya gotta luv Kai Tak airport … arrival… Hell I loved that arrival. Truth be known I’d have done it for free, just to get the buzzzz from flying a Boeing 747 -200 airplane weighing 377 tonnes that close to the ground and high rise at night in shitty weather and with a cross wind. I loved that aircraft type!

    @ Bunk Five Hawks X:

when the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

multiple bans from blogs for the same thing over and over again? so, in my opinion, buzz’s schtick is to agitate anyone who even remotely questions israel or jews to the point that the person who is being agitated inevitably says something anti-jew/israel and BAM!!! HA HA!!! Proof of Jew Hating!!! and then the inevitable ‘guilt by association’ accusations.

however, possum fell for it. perhaps he did not realize the schtick, the game that he was getting sucked into.

I didn’t fall for the schtick even after the multiple offensive and ad hominem filled email attack from buzz the other night that were clearly written to get the response that he wanted from me. i remained polite and cordial. frankly, in my opinion, this was conduct unbecoming of and educated adult and a of a lawyer.

as i’ve said, there are bad actors in all races, creeds, and countries, and good actors in all races, creeds, and countries. the schtick only sees black and white, hammers and nails.

yinz may agree or not with this analysis…that’s fine.

This is interesting. NASA just unveiled their new X-59 aircraft, built by Lockheed Martin’s Skunkworks. It’s a supersonic test bed that’s supposed to produce no sonic boom that can be felt on the ground. If it works, it could usher in a new era of commercial supersonic aviation, since it would presumably be allowed to fly supersonic over populated areas.

One really interesting feature is the lack of a forward windscreen for the pilot. The only forward view is through a series of cameras:

    @ coldwarrior:

I wonder if the pilot has to wear a helmet like the one for the F-35? Those things cost $400,000 each and are custom-fitted to the user. It contains the interface with all the cameras and gives the pilot a 360 degree view, even “through” the plane itself.

  317. lobo91
    322 | January 15, 2024 3:46 pm

For all its teething problems, the F-35 does incorporate some amazing technology. There are cameras all over the airframe that all link together seamlessly. It’s controlled by the pilot moving his head. If he looks over his left shoulder, he doesn’t see the left wing. He sees what’s below it. Even better, the sensors from individual planes all link together to give all the pilots the same view. They’re also developing armed drones (the “loyal wingman” program) that will link in the same way.
