The Sochi Games Are Over, And Hopefully A Future We Will Avoid.

The coverage of the Sochi games in Russia’s Caucus Mountains were unique, to say the least. During the hours of coverage, of which I tried to watch every last bit, NBC managed to score a first in terms of how they presented the Olympic Games to an enthralled America. After the usual tedious affair in which a nation tells its story through interpretive dance, (AKA The Opening Ceremonies,) we got precious little coverage of the town itself and the charms of the host community. Almost every other Olympic Coverage program, throughout Network Television History, has included seemingly endless segments designed to give us more than a glimpse of life in and around the host community. The absurdity of this phenomenon was lampooned beautifully in a 1988 Sports Illustrated cover that depicted an ABC Camera Team holding a sound boom over a daisy in an empty field while a camera man held it in frame, complete with the caption, “further down on the list of things to do in Calgary.”

One would hope that the absence of these types of stories, from which we sports fanatics were so mercifully spared this year, was due entirely to the lessons NBC may have learned in the past. Maybe, previous angry letters about the Four Man Bobsled being preempted in favor of farmers making cheese or milking cows finally got through to the politically correct decision makers who have insisted on making the likes of Rhythmic Gymnastics and Ice Dancing Olympic Worthy Sporting Events.

That’s the hope, but something tells me the reality is much different. Let us not forget that in terms of separating sports from any other topic, ever, is somewhat of a weak point for NBC. I would not be surprised in the least to learn that Bob Costas may have actually had some sort of discharge while discussing the Socioeconomic fantasies of the former Soviet Union during the opening ceremonies. The other reason why I suspect that the true reason for NBC’s new found proclivity towards filtering their coverage to show only actual sports this year, might just be the plethora of photos and tweets sent out just prior to the start of the games by athletes and reporters alike.

Almost half of our citizens today, everyone who votes with the Democrats, will argue that Free Market economics have failed, and that Socialism is the more beneficial way to move our nation forward in the future. In short, they want us to adopt the model of economics used by the people who prepared Sochi for the Winter Games we’d just witnessed. In the end, Private companies mostly from America by the way, those who sponsored these games, had to come in and save the Russian Government’s face by completing most of the unfinished construction within a 48 hour period.

Once more we see the fruits of the free market system being used to repair the carnage left in its wake by the incompetence of Socialism. How many of these perfectly demonstrated illustrations of ours-versus-theirs-economic-systems-in-action must we be shown before we learn this lesson? It’s not the endless out of place editorializing NBC allows Bob Costas to embark upon that ruffles my feathers. It’s not their network’s seemingly official policy to gush on and on endlessly about the virtues of Communism during the winter games that has me so angered. After all, these are the very same clowns that hired Chris, “Tingles,” Matthews and Chris, “Rhetorically Proximate To Justification For War,” Hayes and subsequently gave them hour long slots in Prime Time in order to spout their partisan nonsense, along with Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow, Keith Olberman, and Melissa Harris Perry.

What angered me about NBC’s coverage was the combination of the two. It was their purposeful filtering of anything which might have painted a truthful picture from ever appearing on their coverage of Sochi, while they gushed on and on about the virtues of Socialism. I can understand not wishing to upset their hosts, in order to keep the access for which they had already paid handsomely. I can understand even that they wished to avoid any controversy, or that they might have believed that politics had no place in the unfolding drama of athletic competition. Clearly however, given that they have shown no qualms of mixing the two worlds previously, or even during the event in question, those points were somewhat invalid. But hey, at least America was more concerned with the freakish appearance of a Costas with a truly bad case of, “Pinkeye,” than it was with the nonsense emanating from his lips. So, there’s always that little bit of hope.

Bob Costas’ ties to anti-Redskins activist

Bob Costas’ rant against the Redskins name two weeks ago on Sunday Night Football did not come out of the blue. Besides Obama sticking his nose into this, it turns out NBC Sports has  partnership with a Casino Owner who was behind the anti-Redskins name movement. The owner who also happens to be an Obama blunder, Ray Halbritter has a contract with NBC sports to host a Boxing Match. NBC never disclosed this association during Bob Costas’ rant.

The disputed Indian leader pushing to change the Redskins team name had already entered into an undisclosed television agreement with NBC Sports when Bob Costas delivered his on-air editorial condemning the Redskins name.

The Oneida Indian Nation’s Turning Stone Casino in upstate New York, overseen by gaming mogul and disputed Oneida Nation Representative Ray Halbritter, will host its first NBC “Fight Night” production November 16 with the IBF heavyweight title fight between Tomasz Adamek and Vyacheslav Glazkov.

NBC already had the deal in place to broadcast from Turning Stone when Bob Costas delivered a halftime editorial during NBC’s October 13 primetime broadcast of the Cowboys-Redskins game.

NBC Sports did not disclose its ties to the Oneida Indian Nation at the time of Costas’ editorial.

Halbritter, who schmoozed with President Obama at a 2012 fundraiser, employs a crisis communications firm that also represents CashForGold.com and a lawyer who represents IRS scandal figure Lois Lerner as he struggles to protect a casino empire that underpays valid members of the Oneida Nation and has ordered home evictions of Oneida members harboring anti-Halbritter sentiment.

This was a dishonest move by NBC and full disclosure about their ties to Ray Halbritter should have been revealed.

*Coldwarrior update: I heard on Beck yesterday as I was driving to the CC that the Redskins give 99% to the GOP and 1% to Dems…they were reading from an official disclosure website. Didn’t Obama say he was going to punish his enemies and reward his friends? *

The stupidity of the Redskins name controversy

Bob Costas is your typical Sportscaster who when he wades into politics, reveals his Marxist leanings. Last Sunday he went on a rant about how the Redskins should change their name. This was his second Leftist rant this year during a Football game. Jonah Goldberg analyzes stupidity of the Redskins name controversy.

‘Think for a moment about the term ‘Redskins,’” NBC Sports commentator Bob Costas exhorted viewers in his tirade at halftime of Sunday’s Cowboys-Redskins game. “Ask yourself what the equivalent would be, if directed [at] African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, or members of any other ethnic group. When considered that way, ‘Redskins’ can’t possibly honor a heritage or a noble character trait, nor can it possibly be considered a neutral term.”

“It is an insult, a slur, no matter how benign the present-day intent,” Costas continued.

This is ludicrous. I say this not as someone who has particular love for the Redskins or their name. I say this as a lover of words.

[….]

Redskins lawyer Lanny Davis insists the team’s 80-year-old name should be grandfathered in, even though he concedes that someone might be offended. Time’s Sean Gregory sarcastically responds: “So we have to be sensitive to the one offended person, but can’t change the name, because it’s been around for a long time. Sorry, offended person. We love the name too much, for too long.”

Well, yeah. I’m not offended by the “C” in NAACP — which isn’t racist for obvious reasons — but someone out there must be. That’s not an argument for changing the name. I am offended, however, that the Philadelphia Eagles are named after the Blue Eagle, the propaganda symbol of the New Deal’s National Recovery Administration, which restricted competition and even threw a dry cleaner in jail for undercharging (by a nickel) to clean a suit. But I don’t think the Eagles should change their name on my account.

This should be a non issue, but the Left cannot leave things alone. Native Americans, the Team Owners and fans have no problem with the Redskins name. Only their opinions matter on this and not Bob Costas’s.

Bob Costas takes another stand during Cowboys games, says Redskins nickname is ‘insult’ and ‘slur’

Last night I was enjoying a beer and watching the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys playing on TV. At halftime, Bob Costas weighed in on the Redskins name controversy that was started when Obama said he would change the teams name. As he did earlier in the year on guns, Costas goes on a self righteous rant calling to change the name of the Washington Redskins.

Bob Costas like Mike Lupica and Keith Olbermann is just a  Leftist hack hiding behind being a sports guy. This shows the reach of the Progressive agenda through the popular culture. Even during a sports game, people are propagandized.
