Egypt FM: Hamas must stop rockets in any truce
Who would have thought?
Hamas defiant as Israel rejects Gaza truce
In a defiant televised speech, the head of the Hamas government, Ismail Haniya, vowed Israel would be defeated.
“Our people will defeat those tanks,” he said as Israeli media speculated a ground offensive could be just days away.
.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told the cabinet conditions were not yet ripe to halt the bombardment, launched in response to persistent rocket fire from the territory that Hamas has run for a year and a half.
“We did not launch the Gaza operation only to end it with the same rocket firing that we had at its start,” a senior official quoted Olmert as saying.
Someone remind him of that later on.
Gaza Diplomacy Intensifies as Israel Bombs Hamas (Update3)
The Paris meeting, and Olmert’s comments, followed a government rejection yesterday of a 48-hour cease-fire proposed by French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, which may have set the stage for a ground invasion of Gaza. Sarkozy said he will visit the Middle East next week to try to help “establish peace.”
Following her talks with Sarkozy, Livni said Israel was determined to bear down on Hamas in Gaza.
“The only way to see a change in the region is to help the moderates, but simultaneously to attack and to keep the pressure on the extremists like Hamas,” Livni told reporters.
.
Hamas said today that it would accept a cease-fire with Israel, though it attached conditions including a lifting of Israel’s blockade of Gaza and an opening of all border crossings, Agence France-Presse reported, citing a statement by the movement’s spokesman, Fawzi Barhoum. Israel has said it would only stop its campaign if there’s a complete and unconditional end to rocket fire.
.
Preparations for a ground invasion of Gaza are complete.
“The Israeli military is already in place, ready, and on alert,” said army spokeswoman Leibovitz. “But currently the operation is aircraft and navy only.”
The Israeli army has recommended to the government that it conduct a brief, major ground operation, the Haaretz newspaper reported. Leibovitz declined to comment.
“All options are on the table and it is too early to decide in which direction we should go,” Transport Minister and former army Chief of Staff Shaul Mofaz said on Army Radio. “Hamas has taken a harsh blow, but it isn’t enough yet,” Mofaz said.
Israel targets Gaza mosques used by Hamas
JERUSALEM – Mosques and Muslim prayer halls have not escaped the relentless bombardment of Hamas targets in Gaza by Israel, which claims the Islamic militants misuse some of the holy sites as weapons depots and command centers.
Why would anyone claim that?
Israel agrees to let in aid
Israel to let foreigners leave Gaza on Friday
Israeli officials declined to immediately confirm the decision, which could be part of preparations for an escalation of Israel’s six-day-old air offensive against Islamist targets in the Hamas-ruled Palestinian territory.
White House: Cease-fire depends on Hamas
CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) — President George W. Bush believes the first steps in any cease-fire in the violence in the Mideast will require the Islamic militant group Hamas to agree to stop firing rockets into Israel, the White House said Wednesday.
I believe the first step in any cease-fire in the violence in the Mideast will require the Islamic militant group Hamas to agree to stop firing rockets into Israel. They’ll “agree” to anything.
Obama should engage Hamas, former U.S. envoy says
In order for the new administration to engage with Hamas, Zinni said the militant group must be willing to end its rocket attacks and violence against Israel and commit to a peace process.
If they were willing to do that, Obama could stay home.
Asked Sunday if the Obama administration would be as supportive of Israel as the Bush administration has been, Obama’s senior adviser said the president-elect would “honor” what he sees as “the special relationship between the United States and Israel.”
“But he will do so in a way that will promote the cause of peace, and work closely with the Israelis and the Palestinians on that — toward that objective,” David Axelrod said.
What the hell does that mean?
Iran adopts a bellicose posture on the Gaza conflict
Public displays and rhetoric have two purposes: to assert leadership in the Islamic world and to bolster Tehran’s hard-liners at home. But they also may link Iran unfavorably with Hamas’ militancy.
No way.
