This is Bad

This sucks. I hope the Supreme Court overturns it:\

Washington, D.C.’s ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines doesn’t violate the constitutional rights of residents in the U.S. capital, a federal appeals court ruled.

The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington today also upheld registration requirements for handguns put in place after a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2008 ended the city’s almost total ban on firearms. The three-judge panel ordered a lower court to further review other aspects of Washington’s gun control law, such as its limits on multiple purchases.

Read the whole thing, but it is a loss for Second Amendment rights. We have to fight this fight at the State level as well. We need a State that will abrogate the NFA, and some people willing to fight that fight.

House Weighs Bill to Make Gun Permits Valid Across State Lines

This is important:

Lawmakers are considering a House bill that would give Americans who hold permits to carry firearms in their home states the right to carry their weapons across state lines.

Although many states have entered into voluntary agreements, there is no nationwide framework for honoring permits and licenses uniformly. A bipartisan bill, co-authored by Reps. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., and Heath Shuler, D-N.C., aims to change that.

Supporters say the measure would not create a federal licensing system, but would require that all states recognize lawfully issued permits — regardless of where they were issued. Gun rights advocacy groups say it’s the only way to make sure that lawful gun owners’ Second Amendment rights are guaranteed when they travel away from their home states.

Read the whole thing. This is the kind of law I expect from a Republican House. I support this. The Federalism question has been answered here, and Civil Rights trump States Rights. The same laws and prevcedents that cover seggregation cover the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Why should an individual state be able to override an individuals civil rights?

Democrats Oppose Obama’s UN Gun Control

This is potentially good news:

Twelve Democratic senators have joined 45 Republicans in a fast growing movement to halt progress on an Obama-backed United Nations effort that could bring international gun control into the United States and slap America’s gun owners with severe restrictions.

[Read more about gun rights and gun control.]

Montana Democratic Sen. Jon Tester’s office today provided Whispers with their letter, signed by 11 other Democrats, urging the president to press for significant changes in the treaty. Their major concern: that domestic manufacture, possession, and sales of firearms and ammo will be included, thereby giving an international authority the right to regulate arms sales already protected by the Second Amendment. They also said any move for an international gun registry would be a non-starter. [See editorial cartoons about the Democrats.]

A Republican letter circulated by Kansas Republican Sen. Jerry Moran has 45 signatures.

Ratification requires two-thirds of the Senate. So far 57 senators have said they would vote against the treaty, expected to be wrapped up next year.

With almost two-thirds opposed to the treaty, it isn’t going to make it through the Senate, but this is one of the ways the Left hopes to get around the Second Amendment. Treaties are the highest law of the land, possibly trumping the Constitution itself. I am glad to see this get thrown on the scrap heap.

DNC Chief Proposes New Gun Control

In case you thought that your Second Amendment rights were safe even in Democrat hands now, Debbie Wasserman Schultz wants to disabuse you of that quaint little notion:

The new head of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is pushing for screenings of all gun purchases.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz said the current law, which allows private firearm sales without background checks, is “outrageous.” The Florida Democrat is sponsoring a soon-to-be-released proposal extending the screening requirements to all gun purchases, commercial or private.

“It is outrageous that gun buyers evade the background check system every day, even in broad daylight,” Wasserman Schultz said Monday at a gun reform rally in Miami sponsored by Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

“While we likely cannot end all gun violence, we certainly can do much, much better,” she added. “We have laws on the books designed to keep guns out of the hands of those that should not have them. We just need to close the loopholes and improve the information available to law enforcement.”

Make no mistake, the Democrats want to squeeze the life out of the Second Amendment like a snake squeezes a rat. They have no respect for that particular article of the Bill of Rights, and as we saw in the ObamaCare legislation, you can’t trust any of them on any issue. They will sell out their “deeply held” convictions for a dime and a pat on the head if Obama asks them to. As it was with Bart Stupak and abortion, so with any and all of the so-called “Blue Dogs” on gun control. The only safety for the Second Amendment lies with the Republicans (who aren’t that great a friend to it themselves).
