The Assad Crime Family are not reformers

Mrs. Clinton needs to check with her own State Department to see what sort of a family the Assad’s are.

1.  Murdered up to 25,000 of their own people in Hama in February 1982

2.  Tried to build a nuclear weapon with the help of North Korea and have stockpile chemical weapons

3.   Assassinated Rafik Harriri

4.  Allied with Hezbollah

5.  Given sanctuary to Khaled Mashal of Hamas

Hillary Clinton is known for making provocative statements, but few have generated such a firestorm as her comment last week that the president of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, may be a reformer. She made her remarks after “Face the Nation” host Bob Schieffer noted that Assad’s late father had killed 25,000 people during an uprising against his regime. Clinton responded by noting that the son was now in power and he was a “different leader.”

Lawmakers and columnists quickly condemned her remarks. So two days later Clinton tried to deflect the criticism by telling reporters she was only referencing “the opinions” of lawmakers who had met with Assad and that she was not speaking for the administration. But then she added: “We’re also going to continue to urge that the promise of reform, which has been made over and over again and which you reported on just a few months ago – I’m a reformer, I’m going to reform, and I’ve talked to members of Congress and others about that, that we hear from the highest levels of leadership in Syria – will actually be turned into reality.”

Officially, the State Department has taken a dim view of Assad’s pledges, describing him as “authoritarian” in the most recent human rights report. “The government systematically repressed citizens’ abilities to change their government,” the report said. “In a climate of impunity, there were instances of arbitrary or unlawful deprivation of life.”

There’s no question that Assad had promised reform to reporters, most recently in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. But have “many of the members of Congress of both parties” who have met with Assad actually come away from those meetings believing that Assad was a reformer?

The Facts

Relations between the United States and Syria hit a low point in 2005 after the former prime minister of  Lebanon, Rafik Hariri, was assassinated and the Bush administration withdrew the U.S. ambassador. But President Obama has sought to repair relations, believing a peace deal between Israel and Syria would help stabilize the region. Over congressional opposition, he returned the ambassador to Damascus.

In a meantime, a number of congressional delegations have made trips to Damascus to meet with Assad. Most famously, then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) met with Assad in 2007 over the objections of President Bush, though Republicans such as Rep. Darrell Issa of California also traveled there, believing it was important to maintain a dialogue. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has made repeated visits to Damascus to meet at length with Assad.

We will take it as a given that a number of Democrats believed Assad could be a reformer. On March 16, for instance, Kerry said at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace: “So my judgment is that Syria will move; Syria will change, as it embraces a legitimate relationship with the United States and the West and economic opportunity that comes with it and the participation that comes with it.”

But what about Republicans? Clinton claimed that “many of the members of both parties” who had gone to Syria “in recent months” had decided Assad was a reformer. The State Department, however, refused to provide any names.

So, using news articles, the Internet and other sources, we tried to identify every Republican lawmaker who had gone to Syria on an official trip since Pelosi’s visit in 2007. We came up with a list of 13 names, some of whom are now retired and some of whom have made repeated visits. We then checked every public statement or news release the lawmakers made about their trips or meetings with Assad.

We could not find anything close to sentiments indicating Assad was a reformer. Issa, for instance, urged a need for dialogue but said that “we should hold no illusions about the regime of Bashar al-Assad.” Issa added, “Our discussions were tense and focused on Syria’s support for Hezbollah and Hamas, interference in Lebanon, the movement of foreign fighters to Iraq and the repression of the Syrian people.”

State Department spokesman Mark Toner said that “public comments by members shouldn’t necessarily be the only source of your fact check.”

Two cables that have been released by Wikileaks provide insight into the tenor of the meetings between lawmakers and Assad. During a March, 2009 meeting that included Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-Md.), Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.), Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) and Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-N.C.), the lawmakers pressed him on human rights. Assad replied,  “We are a country in process of reform.  We aren’t perfect.  You are talking about 12 people out of 20 million.  It’s a process. We are moving forward, not fast, but methodically.”

Another meeting, in January 2010, included Sens. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), Arlen Specter (D-Pa.), Michael Enzi (R-Wyo.), John Cornyn (R-Tex.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.). At one point, Bayh is recorded as saying: “Many things in Syria had changed for the better since his 2002 visit.  Now, there were positive indicators that bilateral relations might be on the upswing as well.” But otherwise, there was little discussion of reforms.

The most recent congressional delegation involving Republican lawmakers took place in February and included Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), who led it, as well as Enzi, Wicker, Cornyn, Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho). News reports indicate that Assad put on a sell job, saying, “Arab leaders should tune in to their people’s needs.”

Assad different than Qaddafi Hillary Says

Bashar Assad has been cracking down on anti-regime protests in Syria. So far no condemnation from the “International Community”. Although the protesters are Muslim Brotherhood led, should not the same standard that applies to Libya apply to Syria? Not according to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the U.S. won’t enter into the internal conflict in Syria the way it has in Libya.

“No,” Clinton said, when asked on the CBS “Face the Nation” program if the U.S. would intervene in Syria’s unrest. Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s security forces clashed with protesters in several cities yesterday after his promises of freedoms and pay increases failed to prevent dissent from spreading across the country.

“What’s been happening there the last few weeks is deeply concerning, but there’s a difference between calling out aircraft and indiscriminately strafing and bombing your own cities,” Clinton said, referring to Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi’s attacks on the Libyan people, “than police actions which, frankly, have exceeded the use of force that any of us would want to see.”

The real difference between Assad and Qaddafi is obvious. Col. Mumar Qaddafi gave up his WMD’s, paid money to the Lockerbie bombing victims and was assisting the US against AL-Qaeda. Bashar Assad is allied with Iran, enabled AL-Qaeda to kill Americans in Syria, is assisting the oppression of Maronite Christians in Lebanon, is friends with John Kerry, Nancy Pelosi and is admired by the 3rd World Liberation Movement. In short, Syria has the right friends, Qaddafi didn’t. That’s the difference between the 2 situations.

Update: Another reason Syria is different is because it’s an enemy of Israel.

Hillary and Chavez get chummy in Brazil

Barack Hussein Obama and Hugo Chavez are following the long standing tradition of Progressives turning on each other. In recent days, Chavez has refused to approve Larry Palmer to be the US ambassador to Venezuela. His pretext is that Palmer dishonored Venezuela by mentioning that Colombian rebels have been given refuge there. In retaliation, Obama revoked the Venezuelan ambassador’s visa. Tensions are high between the them over this, or so you would think.

Hillary Clinton was at the inauguration of the Ex Marxist guerrilla and new Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. Hugo Chavez spotted her and went up and shook her hand. They then had a 5 minute chummy conversation!

Despite a simmering diplomatic row, President Hugo Chavez and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were seen having a brief, friendly chat Saturday at the inauguration of Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff.

“They talked and smiled, at least for five minutes. It looked like a social conversation, both were smiling,” a Brazilian official who witnessed the encounter told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The encounter came only three days after the United States revoked the visa of Venezuela’s ambassador in Washington, in reprisal for Chavez’s rejection of the US president’s appointed ambassador to Caracas.

But Chavez and Clinton were all smiles as they mingled with the presidents of Chile and Colombia and the prime minister of Portugal while waiting to meet Rousseff.

This makes me very suspicious of this crisis. It’s very possible this is a manufactured crisis to benefit both Presidents. Obama recently suffered a set back in the recent mid term elections. The Venezuelan opposition made gains in recent congressional elections and Chavez’s has used a flood crisis to make a power grab to circumvent the Congress. Obama also is making a power grab by allowing the EPA to impose Cap-n-Trade and death panels via Medicare. An external crisis helps both! Obama looks tough and Chavez is standing up to the Americans.

Interesting parallels, isn’t it?

There is a difference between Barack Hussein Obama and Hugo Chavez. At least Hugo sings!

How To Tell You've Been Really Bad - Santa Claus defecating down a chimney

Weird Christmas Custom: Spot the Pooping Peasant Figurine

Caganer figures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza

Ceramic figurines of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, called “caganers,” are seen at the Santa Llucia Fair in Barcelona, Spain, in 2005. Statuettes of well-known people defecating are a strong Christmas tradition in Catalonia, dating back to the 18th century. The figures symbolize fertilization, hope and prosperity for the coming year.

Holiday traditions such as wrapping gifts and eating fruitcake may suck, but nothing is crappier than a bizarre Christmas custom practiced in Spain.

While a typical Nativity scene in most parts of the world usually includes figurines of baby Jesus, Joseph, Mary and their entourage of Wise Men and farm animals, folks in the Catalonia region of Spain add their own weird twist.

If you look really closely at Christmas Nativities in Catalan cities like Barcelona or Tarragona, chances are you’ll find a strange figurine of a man squatting and pooping somewhere in the manger. There’s even a little pile of poop right next to the figure to prove it.

That’s right. Someone is taking a crap right in the middle of baby Jesus’ birthday, but in Spain, it’s no big deal.

The pooping peasant figure is called “el caganer ” – which translates to “the defecator” – and has been a stinky staple in Catalan Christmas culture since the 18th century, according to Spaniard Ana Ramiro, press manager for the Tourist Office of Spain in Los Angeles.

Ramiro told AOL News that el caganer is a very popular and common holiday figure all over Catalonia and in parts of Italy, France and Portugal, and is often hidden somewhere obscure, like behind a tree, in public Nativities.

In fact, she said Catalan kids have been known to make a festive game out of spotting the pooping peasant this time of year because it is that likely that he’s in there somewhere.

It’s like playing “Where’s Waldo?” – only with poop.

But why in the name of you know who is there a man relieving himself in the manger?

Well, Ramiro cleared the air and revealed that the reasons are really quite simple.

“There are many interpretations of what el caganer stands for, but the most popular belief is that he’s fertilizing the earth to bring forth a good harvest. It’s to bring good luck and abundance in the new year,” she explained. “Some people also think that just like a birth is natural, going to the bathroom is too, so he fits right in.”

Either way – No. 1 or No. 2 – Ramiro said el caganer is here to stay, and is even tolerated by the Catholic Church.

“I remember visiting my grandmother’s church as a child and seeing el caganer squatting and pooping in the church Nativity. I’ve never heard of people being offended by it, since it’s such an old tradition,” she said.

El caganer has become so widely accepted, figurines are sold all over Catalonia. A version of President Barack Obama as el caganer is even available online.

Caganer figure of Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty might take a minor issue with the caganer figure of herself. She’s a gata refinada y amable and would answer nature’s call only in an appropriate location, most likely a litter box. In the future, she might prefer that the litter box be included in the sculptural rendition.

Politicians, on the other hand, are only too happy to do Number Two all over everybody, and not only at Christmas.

Just for starters, here’s Barack Hussein:
