A fairytale presidency and Hollywood

For some reason I cannot help but think that Ann Romney or Laura Bush would never be invited to participate in the Oscars. Mr. Tobin reminds us of what Republicans are up against in trying to defeat the Obama/Hollywood/Media machine.

by Jonathan S. Tobin

No one who decided to go to bed or just switched the channel sometime before the end of a spectacularly boring Oscars show last night should be blamed. But if you did, you missed more than the identity of the winners of the major awards. In a night full of not particularly funny jokes or entertaining production numbers, and winners that most of the movie pundits predicted, the biggest surprise came when First Lady Michelle Obama appeared live from the White House to help Jack Nicholson present the Best Picture Award that capped the evening. Mrs. Obama is as graceful, attractive and well dressed as most of the film stars present at the ceremony. But the decision to include her at its conclusion illustrated a salient fact about the advantages her husband has been given and why the laws of political gravity do not seem to apply to him.

In the last year I have often written about how conservatives have underestimated President Obama’s political appeal as well as the kid glove treatment he gets from the media. The full explanation of his ability to escape the sort of critical scrutiny his recent predecessors have received is multifaceted, but I believe the most important aspect of this phenomenon is what I call the “Camelot” factor. The Obamas are the beneficiaries of a media whose liberal bias is beyond doubt.  […….]

It almost goes without saying that it is impossible to imagine any other recent First Lady being invited to present the Best Picture Oscar. Mrs. Obama’s many fans will argue that she is the most stylish and perhaps attractive of recent presidential wives, and perhaps they have a case to make in that regard.  [……]

While all presidents, including some of the most revered like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, have always been subjected to abuse in the political arena, popular culture had always tended to treat presidents with deference. But ever since Kennedy, that salute-the-flag way of looking at our political leaders has gone out the window. Since then all denizens of the White House have been subjected to the same cynical and sarcastic treatment accorded everybody else in contemporary American culture. Though liberals were certainly treated better than conservatives, they were not exempt. Not, that is, until Barack and Michelle Obama.

President Obama’s historic status as our first African-American president grants him the sort of edge that no other contemporary politician or any of his successors can ever hope to acquire. But the strength of his position is not just a function of a lapdog liberal media that is so easily led around by the nose by White House flacks. The Obamas are not just the leading figures in our politics; they are treated by popular culture as the uncrowned king and queen of America.

[…….]

Part of this is seen in the way the first lady and the Obama children are held exempt from the sort of nasty criticism that has been the normal fare of every presidential family since Jacqueline Kennedy, Caroline and John-John were the darlings of the press. The children of even liberal presidents such as Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were the butts of jokes–but not the Obama kids.

But the ability of the Obamas to preside over American culture like apolitical monarchs while simultaneously taking part in some of the most bitter, partisan and demagogic political warfare against their opponents gives the president an enormous advantage in everything he does, whether it is conducting a re-election campaign or bullying Congress to raise taxes.

Prior to the Oscars, it was understood that politics had torpedoed the chances of the superior “Zero Dark Thirty” from winning the top award. But Mrs. Obama’s presence in the ceremony told us more about the intersection of culture and politics than even that travesty.

Republicans have spent much of the last few months since their defeat at the hands of President Obama engaged in an orgy of introspection and recrimination. A good deal of that is justified. But as much as they need to rethink their approach to some issues, as well as their messaging, they would be foolish to think that their losses in 2008 and 2012 are unconnected to their bad fortune in being matched up against a Camelot presidency.

Note to Michelle Obama: keep your unquestionably obese self out of my life!

Let me start with an obvious statement here. I can not wait for these people to be gone. Our Nation was based entirely upon the concept of personal freedom. Land of the free, home of the brave springs to mind, and is repeated each and every time we sing our National Anthem. We do not have royalty in America, nor is our government supposed to be in the business of determining how we should live, what we should be eating, what jobs we choose for ourselves, what kinds of transportation we procure for ourselves, what temperatures we select for our thermostats, or anything beyond preventing fraud, or preventing us from interfering in the lives of our neighbors. One of the things that I love about being an American is that my business is my own, and my fellow citizens are none of my business per say.

Enter today’s Democrat Party. They have determined what kind of car I should drive, what kind of light bulb I should place in my home, what kind of toilet I should use, how I should go about the business of washing my clothes, what I should do to earn a living, what kind of lifestyle I am allowed to enjoy, and now it seems, what foods I should be allowed to eat. Erika Johnson is fast becoming one of my favorite bloggers on the web, but she only got this one partially right. It is more than Michelle Obama sticking her fanny into my local grocery that is upsetting here. (I do not intend to diminish that point, but just feel that there is more.) It is the fact that these people wish to strip all Americans of every little bit of freedom, and further seek to establish themselves as the masters of every aspect of life the rest of us are allowed to enjoy. I can not think of a single area of my personal business now, that some Democrat somewhere, does not seek to intrude themselves upon. Democrats reading this, if you can think of one, please let me know.

From the Hot Air article linked to above:

I don’t really have a problem with the First Lady of the United States working to combat childhood obesity, in theory. Obesity is a serious and far too rampant problem in this country, and if Michelle Obama wants to use her platform as a public figure to champion the cause, traveling around to schools to educate kids and parents about healthy lifestyles or advocating on behalf of a worthy foundation or something — great. What I most certainly do have a problem with is the federal government using public resources and policy fiat to construct the bike-path-using, salad-eating, quinoa-cookin’ society of their crunchiest daydreams because that’s how they think society should look.

Bureaucratic endeavors to instill top-down virtue almost never fail to fall spectacularly flat, and usually come with a whole mess of unintended consequences and hidden costs, or even end up achieving the opposite of their intended effect. (Example: One of the reasons corn syrup, a.k.a. the sweetener in many processed foods, is so cheap is because the federal government subsidizes the corn industry to spur ethanol production — which in turn, by the way, incentivizes the agriculture industry to bring even more marginal land area into production. The road to obesity runs through chopped-down forests and is paved with good intentions. Dizzying, isn’t it?)

Besides, it’s really just not a good idea for the government to be involved in telling us what we should and shouldn’t be eating. Food can be a tricky business, and the scientific community is always telling us new and conflicting things. The conventional wisdom à la the old USDA food pyramid used to be that bread/cereal/grains/pasta should take up the largest portion of your diet, while you should barely eat any fat at all; now there’s a bunch of data and studies corroborating that white flour and starch is just about the worst thing you can eat and that a larger helping of certain types of fat (omega-3 fatty acids, for instance) is not only desirable but necessary for a well-rounded diet. I’ve also heard about studies suggesting that adult human beings really aren’t meant to ingest dairy, and that we shouldn’t be eating so much fruit because all of the sugars. Who knows what’s next? Maybe we’ll find out that high levels of sodium are actually the best thing since sliced bread! The science is too changeable and political, so maybe these decisions are better left up to individual choice rather than the government’s oh-so-august endorsement.

In the end, the free market system is a system in which markets provide voluntarily, those goods and services individual people want for themselves, and at a price people are willing to pay for those things. Socialism is a system in which markets provide by coercion, those goods and services that self anointed elites feel the non elite class of people should desire, if they were only as smart as the self anointed elites, at a price determined by those very same elites. When our behavior does not match the desired behavior necessary to make their system resemble their theory, coercion must ultimately be used. When the morally superior behaviors become criminal, black markets are formed, criminals are born, and misery ensues. There is a reason that every former Soviet Citizen living here in the America is as conservative a right winger as you will find, and why the Cuban Community as a whole tend to vote against other Latino groups as a whole. These people have witnessed, first hand the ravages of societies which adhered to the failed tenets of Socialism.

The self anointed elites of course, they never expect themselves to experience the consequences of the lifetime decisions that they wish to inflict upon the rest of us. Michelle will never live life on the diet she chooses for us. Privileged obesity you see is not our business. In the America envisioned by the Obama’s, some people are more equal than others.

I can’t decide under what category to file this one. Does it belong in the definition of Chutzpah category? Does it belong more to the, “I can’t wait for these people to be gone,” bucket? Will noticing that Michelle Obama has flown beyond the line of minding her own freaking business and landed herself squarely in a place that is devoid of all manners, self restraint, common human courtesy, and humility, get me called a racist, because the offending party, Michelle Obama, happens to be an African American? The level of arrogant pomposity achieved here has broken all previous records, even those held by her husband, the veritable poster child of arrogant pomposity.

What we have here, just to put it all in perspective, is a conspicuously overweight woman of elite privilege lecturing the, in perfect shape pixie sprite sized young lady who just won an Olympic Gold Medal for being the very best female gymnast in the wold, for eating a single Egg McMuffin. So intent on politicizing every thing under the sun, including our very own and personal dietary choices, Michelle Obama found it impossible to allow Gabby Douglas her moment in the sun. She was invited to appear on the Tonight Show ostensibly to celebrate her achievement as becoming one of the greatest athletes currently living. Allowing her that little bit of recognition for her achievement was just too much for Michelle Obama to bear. The nerve of that young lady, in obvious top physical condition, to believe that she actually put in the lion’s share of the effort to win her own Gold Medal is simply astonishing. Doesn’t she know that it’s all about her social superiors, ie., the Obama’s?

For anyone who believes me to be wrong, I invite you to let us all know of a single accomplishment of positive impact upon anything that Michelle has had, and then we can discuss whether or not it gives her standing to lecture anyone on anything concerning what they choose to put into their mouths and subsequently digest.

(Michelle, pay attention to lesson one on how to be gracious, courteous, and polite.)

To Gabby Douglas, I say congratulations on your stunning victory as the greatest woman’s gymnast on the planet today. I also would have celebrated with a fine McDonald’s sandwich, perhaps the Steak Egg, and Cheese Bagel, Hash Browns, and Coffee. I wish you the best in what ever endeavor you choose for yourself and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for being a wonderful ambassador to the world community on behalf of the United States of America. Warmest regards always, John.

P.S. you may also wish to celebrate by enjoying a nice Papa John’s Pizza and a sandwich from Chick-Fil-A.
