There’s a moment in history that I wouldn’t have missed had I been given a few hour’s advance notice: Koko interviews (the late) Mr. Rogers. (Koko met other celebrities as well, including The Shatner, and she groped him.)

Koko, as you might recall, was born in captivity in the San Francisco Zoo in 1971, and was taught Ameslan, American Sign Language. She has a vocabulary of around 1,000 words/signs, and is the only simian to ever be involved in a sexual harassment lawsuit.

According to Wiki, she refers to people as “nipples” and pressured female attendents to remove their shirts and underclothing. Koko is also the only gorilla to retain a lawyer –I would love to find out how she chose one– and the lawsuit was settled in 2005.

Not sure how much Koko had to pay, or where the money came from since she hasn’t held a job for all of her 39 years.  Regardless, if I ever meet Koko I’ll ask her about Ameslan and how to sign “It’s time now for The Overnight Open Thread.”

Pickles is a Dirty Word

[Originally posted a long time ago here.]

FACT: Three-year-old boys know how to cuss by the time they are two; it just takes them another twelve months to polish it and get it right.

Cussing generally improves with age, but it gets significantly less creative after the age of 12 or so, when it becomes limited to words starting with f and s. The following is a dad’s description of a true story (from The Sneeze), and the re-enactment is a YouTube classic:

My three-year-old has decided that “Pickles” is a curse word. It basically means “a**hole.” Or possibly, “You d**k.”

Here is an actual exchange from the other morning:

Me: Please put your pants on.
Him: Fine, Pickles.

He says it right to my face, with complete disgust.

To better illustrate the scene for you, I’ve asked the guy who played Ricky in “Better Off Dead” to provide a re-enactment using his professional acting skills. Please enjoy.

If anyone here doesn’t appreciate the wonderful absurdity of an adult acting out the storyline insult of a three-year-old, then you’re a pooty-face times infinity plus one on The Overnight Open Thread.

Fireproof Your Christmas Tree

Get the flock out! Forget the danger of little Timmy eating lead “icicles,” this stuff allowed many immigrants to light their Christmas trees in the traditional way — with tallow candles — and without burning their houses down.

I assume that this flocking product was intended to be mixed with water and poured or painted over the boughs of den Weihnachtsbaum. Perfectly safe, as long as the faux snow wasn’t friable, and you kept little Timmy from gnawing the needles.

Ahhh. Those were the days, before they invented lead poisoning, asbestosis, DDT toxicity, alar scares, political correctness, AGW pseudo science and amphetamines called little green footballs.  The bar’s open, so grab a beverage while we decorate The Blogmocracy Árbol de Navidad on The Overnight Open Thread.
