Caturday: Why Cats Drink From Toilets

Many cats are endlessly fascinated with the common flush toilet (variously known as the commode, the water closet or “WC”, the loo, and so forth). Perhaps this is because cats like the sight and sound of running water, or prefer to drink cold water. Some cats also like drinking from, or playing with, water faucets, fountains, or even shower heads.

This cat likes to watch the toilet flush

Some cats have figured out, or been taught, how to flush a toilet with their paws. While marathon toilet-flushing can be immensely entertaining for the cat, this activity can also lead to an unexpectedly high water bill for the cat’s human companions – especially where water is expensive or in short supply.

When human beings see cats (or other animals) drinking from the toilet, the humans’ first thought is usually “Ewwwww!” It is no wonder that the term toilet water (which actually means a mildly diluted fragrance solution) is seen less and often in American advertising.

But then, those same humans are happy to drink water, soft drinks, or iced tea from fast food restaurants without a second thought. It turns out that the cats may be smarter than we thought…

Girl’s Science Project Finds Toilet Water Cleaner Than Ice In Restaurants

Student finds toilet water cleaner than ice at fast food restaurants

New Tampa, Florida – 12-year-old Jasmine Roberts is a seventh-grade student at Benito Middle School in New Tampa.

When it came time for her to choose a science project, she wondered about the ice in fast food restaurants.

Jasmine Roberts, 7th-grade student:
“My hypothesis was that the fast food restaurants’ ice would contain more bacteria that the fast food restaurants’ toilet water.”

So Roberts set out to test her hypothesis, selecting five fast food restaurants, within a ten-mile radius of the University of South Florida.

Roberts says at each restaurant she flushed the toilet once, the used sterile gloves to gather samples.

Jasmine Roberts:
“Using the sterile beaker I scooped up some water and closed the lid.”

Roberts also collected ice from soda fountains inside the five fast food restaurants. She also asked for cups of ice at the same restaurant’s drive thru windows.

She tested the samples at a lab at the Moffitt Cancer Center where she volunteers with a USF professor. Roberts says the results did not surprise her.

Jasmine Roberts:
“I found that 70-percent of the time, the ice from the fast food restaurant’s contain more bacteria than the fast food restaurant’s toilet water.”

Roberts’ graph shows the toilet water, shown in red, had less bacteria in most cases than the ice inside shown in blue, and the ice from drive-through windows shown in green. Roberts’ teacher says he wasn’t surprised either.

Mark Danish, Honors Science Teacher:
“It does concern me and I think with any restaurant you have to think twice about what you may get there.”

Israel, the Third Nation to Reach the Moon?

Three young Israeli scientists are competing for $20 million in the Google Lunar X Prize. The competition is for “privately funded teams to safely land a robot on the surface of the Moon and have that robot travel 500 meters over the lunar surface and send images and data back to the Earth.”

If all goes according to plan, by December 2012 a team of three young Israeli scientists will have landed a tiny spacecraft on the moon, explored the lunar surface, and transmitted live video back to earth, thereby scooping up a $20 million prize (the Google Lunar X Prize), revolutionizing space exploration, and making the Jewish State the third nation (after the U.S. and Russia) to land a probe on the moon. And they’re doing it in their spare time.

The three engineers – Yariv Bash (electronics and computers), Kfir Damari (communication systems), and Yonatan Winetraub (satellite systems) all have high-level day jobs in the Israeli science and technology world, and also both teach and study. They all had heard of the Google Lunar X Prize independently, before being introduced by mutual friends who, as Yonatan puts it “thought we were all crazy enough to do it, so we should meet each other.”

Israel, The Third Nation on the Moon?

The Israeli scientists are operating non-profit and “any winnings will be invested in promoting science among Israeli youth.”

If the Israelis’ robot does make it to the moon first, the Muslim world may have to rethink their crescent moon symbol.

Caturday: Cats Get a Bum Rap

From the endlessly fascinating Television Tropes & Idioms wiki:

TV Tropes: “Cats Are Mean”

“If cats looked like frogs, we’d realize what nasty, cruel little bastards they are.”
Terry Pratchett, Lords And Ladies

Cats get a bad rap.

While cat and dog owners can cite a truckload of quirks on both ends of the spectrum, when both species are featured in fiction you are far more likely to find an outright cruel, nasty, and otherwise vicious cat character. Both sets of animals will have vices, but a dog is more likely to do them unintentionally. A cat enjoys causing trouble. Parts of this have to do with traditional traits that even cat lovers admire – independence and pride for some equals lack of love for the owners and aloofness for others. As a result, many writers who like cats, such as Terry Pratchett and Paul Gallico, play into the trope by presenting their pet as something of a Magnificent Bastard, expertly manipulating humans.

It certainly doesn’t help considering highly marketable, small creatures are typically the kind of things cats see as prey. Dogs aren’t exempt from this behavior in real life, but you’ll rarely see them trying to actively catch anything on their own terms if they’re not a hunting dog working for their master. Since mice (and birds) are often depicted as being intelligent, the express desire to eat them becomes a type of cannibalism and is therefore evil. Protagonist cats rarely eat mice (rats, maybe). Notably, the real threat that mice present, their ability to overpopulate, consume stores and carry dangerous parasites, and the original reason we bred cats in the first place, is seldom mentioned in fiction. Nor is the fact that a whole category of dogs, terriers, also kill small cute rodents.

Domestic dogs are rarely portrayed as evil unless the setting specifically only features dogs and antagonists are needed. A negative portrayal of dogs is usually light, treating them as simply dumb and servile (and fiercely territorial); the occasional evil tear-’em-to-pieces junkyard dog or Hellhound is an exception. When they are genuinely annoying, this characteristic is given to stereotypical small yappy breeds that reflect their owners. In real life it says more about a dog’s training.

Much of this no doubt descends from Medieval European folklore associating cats with witches and other forces of evil. (At the same pyres witches were burned, cats were burned too.) At the same time, there is a grain of truth to this. “A deadly game of cat and mouse” is often a very real situation; cats not taught to hunt properly by their mothers often appear to clumsily toy with their prey before killing it, and even veteran mousers will play with their quarry before killing and consuming them, in order to avoid being bitten, since the saying is correct that “even a cornered mouse will snap at a cat” (but only when the mouse is aware of the cat; meanwhile a cat that ambushes a mouse by surprise, will kill it instantly, which is why cats are experts at hunting by stealth and secrecy).

That said, it should come as no surprise that the Right Hand Cat is the Diabolical Mastermind‘s most popular pet of choice.

Contrast Everything’s Cuter With Kittens. (Though it can go hand-in-hand with it when Cute Is Evil.)

Compare Dogs Are Dumb and Killer Rabbit. Overlaps with Cats Are Superior, especially when Dumb Is Good. May also in some cases lead to Cats Are Snarkers.

True, there are a few exceptions such as Disney’s “The Aristocats” (see Caturday: Cartoon Movie Cats).

That said, on the whole, cats have gotten a bum rap for many centuries, not only in written fiction and other media, but also folklore, urban legends, and other word-of-mouth and person-to-person communications. The sad thing is that this negative image of cats can spread irrational fears, prompting political decisions to eliminate cats in certain jurisdictions. Jihadi Troll Incites Blog War Among Counterjihadists

Anti-jihadists vs. Anti-jihadists: Something Else at Work

By Julia Gorin – Reprinted with permission.

When the scholar and author Srdja Trifkovic was turned back at the Vancouver airport on Feb. 24 — after a Bosnian-Muslim organization called The Institute for Research of Genocide in Canada alerted authorities that a “genocide denier” was within their borders — Greater Islam and its useful idiots saw an opportunity, and pounced.

The name “Trifkovic” rang a bell in the head of a young writer named Aymenn Jawad al-Tamimi, who quickly recalled that anti-jihadist Robert Spencer had written supportively of him and his work in the past. Hearing that Trifkovic didn’t buy into the Srebrenica Genocide, al-Tamimi saw a path to killing two birds with one stone. And went digging for dirt.

Soon enough, he found something, or as close to something as one can find on Dr. Trifkovic. What he found was a symposium that Trifkovic, a paleoconservative, had participated in last year on a radical Right website called Alt Right, responding to the question: Is the traditionalist, paleoconservative Right anti-Semitic, as is popularly perceived? The moderator of the panel was a Jewish paleocon named Eugene Girin. Joining Trifkovic was Paul Gottfried, also a Jewish paleocon, and the third panelist was well-known anti-Semitic paleocon Taki Theodoracopulos.

Reading the following paragraphs in the Trifkovic essay, al-Tamimi thought he’d caught the man red-handed in the act of Jew-hating…

Read the rest here – very long article, but worth reading.

The ensuing brouhaha was very reminiscent of the infamous “Vlaams Belang” episode at the fever swamp. Julia Gorin, who is Jewish, does an excellent job of showing why none of Dr. Trifkovic’s comments can be construed as anti-Semitic.

Ironically, Emir Ramic, the Bosnian Muslim libelist who played the biggest role in stopping Dr. Trifkovic from speaking in Canada, is both a jihadi and an anti-Semite.

I am posting this because it appears that our enemies have found a way to drive wedges into the counterjihad movement and to set us against one another, so as to render us ineffective. It is high time we stop allowing ourselves to be jerked around in this way.

Yes, I know that many people on this blog are put off by the term “paleoconservative,” and not without cause. The “paleoconservative” designation was adopted some time ago by a mixed bag of conservatives who wished to distinguish themselves both from the “neocons” associated with PNAC (Project for a New American Century) and from libertarians. Unfortunately, the term “paleoconservative” became tainted because some (though certainly not all) of that group were anti-Semitic or anti-Israel. In the case of Dr. Trifkovic, who supports Israel and the Jews, the term “conservative traditionalist” would perhaps be more accurate.

I have met Dr. Srdja Trifkovic in person more than once. I have heard him speak. I have read two books and many articles that he has written. It is clear to me that Dr. Trifkovic is no anti-Semite, but rather, a gentleman, a respected scholar, and a hero of free speech, of the counterjihad, and of the Serbian people.

It is time for all of us who are part of the counterjihad to stop allowing our enemies to set us against one another. Instead, it is time for us to cooperate, to stand together, and, above all, to avoid repeating any unfounded accusations.
