Al-Nusra set on collision course with Al-Qaeda in Iraq

Al-Nusra Front have been the most effective fighters of the Syrian rebels. They are the only rebels able to go toe to toe with Hezbollah and Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Unlike other Al Qaeda factions, Nusra had support of the populace and actually did not target Christians in areas they controlled. Jealousy soon spread to the organization that spawned them, Al Qaeda in Iraq.

In April AQI leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared the merger of Nusra and his organization under the name the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham. He did this without consulting Nusra leader Abu Mohammad Golani nor al-Qaeda leader Zawahiri, who later invalidated this merger. Baghdadi has not recognized this ruling and has the foreign fighters under his control. The Syrian fighters of Nusra, most of whom were defected Syrian soldiers have stayed loyal to Goloni. This sets the stage for a Nusra vs. AQI showdown.

(Reuters) – A rift between Syrian jihadis and their fellow fighters from al Qaeda’s Iraqi wing may lead to internecine war among some of the most effective rebel groups in combating President Bashar al-Assad.

Trouble has been brewing since April over what Syria’s Nusra Front regards as a power grab by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of the Islamic State of Iraq. Now, Baghdadi’s insistence that he will keep fighting as head of a united jihadi brigade in Syria, defying orders from al Qaeda chief Ayman Zawahri, has brought the two groups close to turning on each other.

“Tension is increasing, it is about to reach boiling point. Both sides are saying they are right. A clash between them could occur soon and if it happens, it will be ugly,” said a senior rebel commander in Damascus who is following the dispute.

In April Baghdadi announced his Islamic State of Iraq was merging with the Nusra Front, which has staged some of the deadliest attacks on Assad’s forces.

This apparently unilateral move opened up bitter and public rifts with the Nusra Front leadership – which resisted what it saw as his bid for overall power – and with Zawahri, the global al Qaeda leader who instructed him to put the merger on hold in an apparent attempt to settle the row.

“Baghdadi and those who believe in his extreme thinking, they are mostly foreigners and they are on their own,” the source said. “Nusra is back to work,” he added, saying Golani had ordered his commanders to prepare to resume operations.

Despite losing ground to Baghdadi’s men in the north, particularly in Aleppo and Raqqa provinces, rebels say the Nusra Front remains active and prominent in operations in the southern province of Deraa, near the border with Jordan.

“Golani is the son of Syria and he was so far doing a great job in paving the way for the creation of the (Islamic) state as a choice of people not by force, so Baghdadi in a way is an obstacle,” the source said.

Al Nusra Front is a Syrian movement that uses the AQ moniker for prestige purposes. But their agenda is only about Syria and Lebanon. The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham is a foreign movement made up of people whose agenda is pure terror. It is likely that Nusra will break all ties to AQ and just adopt a more Syrian Nationalist agenda, albeit Islamist.

The Syrian War shows how these Islamists do not even trust each other. How can we in the West trust these very same people?

Those Different European Muslims

The Balkans issue divides the Right. Most on the Right view Balkan Muslims as they should be viewed, no different than any other Islamic population. Their loyalty is to Dar el Islam and they will make common cause with Arabs, Pakis or any other Islamic group against the Kuffar. A minor faction on the Right thinks that because Bosnians as White European, that makes them different, all the while hating the Serbs Christians. This attitude is naive and not based on reality.

Below is a video of Bosnian Jihadists in Syria.

Hezbollah’s war with al-Nusra and FSA is eroding its capabilities; 12 Lebanese soldiers killed in clashes with Sunnis

The war in Syria is bleeding Hezbollah’s military capabilities. It has reportedly lost between 500-1000 fighters, many of whom were their elite units. Most of the loses have been done by the Al Qaeda linked Al Nusra Front, who are using Hezbollah’s tactics against them. As the war progresses, Hezbollah will be faced with a dilemma. It has a smaller recruiting pool than Nusra or the FSA, whom can call upon not just Syrian Sunnis, but throughout the Islamic world. The war has also shattered Hezbollah’s image in the Arab world and in many cases, they are now hated more than the Israelis.

Hezbollah’s large-scale involvement in Syria is eroding its military resources, though the extent of the damage it is incurring remains a closely guarded secret.

The Lebanese terrorist organization’s Shi’ite fighters, who were deployed to Syria to fight on behalf of Syrian President Bashar Assad at Iran’s orders, tipped the balance in favor of Assad at the battle of Qusair in recent weeks. But Israeli security analysts said on Sunday the victory came at a heavy price for Hezbollah that is set to rise the longer the organization remains engaged in Syria.

It is likely that Hezbollah sent some of its quality units based in south Lebanon, originally designated for combat with the IDF, to the battlefields of Syria, Schweitzer said. “They’re suffering casualties as they fight irregular bands of rebels.”

In Syria, Hezbollah is struggling to deal with the same tactics it itself employed in the past against the IDF. A report in The Lebanese Daily Star published last month quoted one Hezbollah fighter as saying that the tactics of the jihadi Jabhat Al-Nusra Front in Syria had “a kind of irritating familiarity.”

This conflict is a god send to the Non Islamic world. May these terrorists continue to kill each other and leave us alone.

12 Lebanese soldiers killed in clashes with Sunnis

Lebanese soldiers fought Sunni Muslim gunmen in the southern city of Sidon on Monday in one of the deadliest outbreaks of violence fueled by sectarian divisions over the civil war in neighboring Syria.

The army said 12 soldiers had been killed in clashes which broke out on Sunday after security forces detained a follower of the hardline Sunni Muslim cleric Sheikh Ahmed al-Assir. His supporters retaliated by opening fire on an army checkpoint.

Security sources put the army death toll at 15, with 60 wounded. They said at least two gunmen were also killed in the clashes but soldiers were surrounding the mosque where Assir’s supporters were based, making it difficult to verify details.

The mosque showed signs of heavy damage from 24 hours of ferocious exchanges of rocket and gunfire.

Sidon had been on edge since violence erupted last week between Sunni and Shi’ite Muslim fighters, at odds over the Syrian conflict which pits mainly Sunni rebels against President Bashar Assad, an Alawite from an offshoot of Shi’ite Islam.

Tensions escalated further when the Lebanese Shi’ite militant group Hezbollah sent fighters into Syria to lead the recapture of a strategic border town by Assad’s forces.

“The army has tried for months to keep Lebanon away from the problems of Syria, and it ignored repeated requests for it to clamp down on Sheikh Ahmed al-Assir’s group,” the military command said in a statement on Sunday.

“But what has happened today has gone beyond all expectations. The army was attacked in cold blood in an attempt to light the fuse in Sidon, just as was done in 1975,” it said, referring to the year that Lebanon’s own civil war began.

Assir, whose supporters accuse the army of giving cover to Hezbollah gunmen, called for people across the country to join him and demanded that “honorable” soldiers defect.

The Syrian Army and Hezbollah won a phyric victory at Qusayr, but all it has done is anger the Sunnis in the Arab world. Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has joined the Muslim Brotherhood’s call for Jihad in Syria.

Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri urged Sunni Muslims to unite and join the battle in Syria to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad and prevent a US allied government from taking the lead in a post-Assad Syria.

According to The Associated Press, Zawahri called Sunnis everywhere to dedicate their lives, money and expertise for the fight against Assad’s regime.

He has blasted Lebanese Hezbollah Shiite militants and Iran for supporting Assad, AP said

Zawahri also called on Sunnis to “rise above their differences” and fight the expanding Shiite influence in Syria, AP added.

The news comes a week after prominent Sunni Muslim cleric Youssef al-Qaradawi on Saturday called for jihad in Syria as he lashed out at Shiite group Hezbollah for sending its men to fight in the war torn country.
