Al-Nusra set on collision course with Al-Qaeda in Iraq

Al-Nusra Front have been the most effective fighters of the Syrian rebels. They are the only rebels able to go toe to toe with Hezbollah and Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Unlike other Al Qaeda factions, Nusra had support of the populace and actually did not target Christians in areas they controlled. Jealousy soon spread to the organization that spawned them, Al Qaeda in Iraq.

In April AQI leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared the merger of Nusra and his organization under the name the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham. He did this without consulting Nusra leader Abu Mohammad Golani nor al-Qaeda leader Zawahiri, who later invalidated this merger. Baghdadi has not recognized this ruling and has the foreign fighters under his control. The Syrian fighters of Nusra, most of whom were defected Syrian soldiers have stayed loyal to Goloni. This sets the stage for a Nusra vs. AQI showdown.

(Reuters) – A rift between Syrian jihadis and their fellow fighters from al Qaeda’s Iraqi wing may lead to internecine war among some of the most effective rebel groups in combating President Bashar al-Assad.

Trouble has been brewing since April over what Syria’s Nusra Front regards as a power grab by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of the Islamic State of Iraq. Now, Baghdadi’s insistence that he will keep fighting as head of a united jihadi brigade in Syria, defying orders from al Qaeda chief Ayman Zawahri, has brought the two groups close to turning on each other.

“Tension is increasing, it is about to reach boiling point. Both sides are saying they are right. A clash between them could occur soon and if it happens, it will be ugly,” said a senior rebel commander in Damascus who is following the dispute.

In April Baghdadi announced his Islamic State of Iraq was merging with the Nusra Front, which has staged some of the deadliest attacks on Assad’s forces.

This apparently unilateral move opened up bitter and public rifts with the Nusra Front leadership – which resisted what it saw as his bid for overall power – and with Zawahri, the global al Qaeda leader who instructed him to put the merger on hold in an apparent attempt to settle the row.

“Baghdadi and those who believe in his extreme thinking, they are mostly foreigners and they are on their own,” the source said. “Nusra is back to work,” he added, saying Golani had ordered his commanders to prepare to resume operations.

Despite losing ground to Baghdadi’s men in the north, particularly in Aleppo and Raqqa provinces, rebels say the Nusra Front remains active and prominent in operations in the southern province of Deraa, near the border with Jordan.

“Golani is the son of Syria and he was so far doing a great job in paving the way for the creation of the (Islamic) state as a choice of people not by force, so Baghdadi in a way is an obstacle,” the source said.

Al Nusra Front is a Syrian movement that uses the AQ moniker for prestige purposes. But their agenda is only about Syria and Lebanon. The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham is a foreign movement made up of people whose agenda is pure terror. It is likely that Nusra will break all ties to AQ and just adopt a more Syrian Nationalist agenda, albeit Islamist.

The Syrian War shows how these Islamists do not even trust each other. How can we in the West trust these very same people?

Al-Qaeda in Iraq attempts to move into al-Nusra turf causes a split

The most effective fighting force in Syria is al-Nusra Front. Led by members of al-Qaeda in Iraq, other foreign Jihadists, defectors from the Syrian Army and Eastern Syrian tribes, they have defeated Assad’s forces, Hizb’Allah and Iranian Basij in many battles. The leaders of AQI began to get jealous over the success of their creation and did not like the ideological direction of al-Nusra. Although the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda shared the same militant ideology as its parents, al-Nusra was more pragmatic and was for the time being tolerant of Christians and allowed freedom for women nor did it ban alcohol.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq now calls itself the Islamic state of Iraq and the Levant (al-Sham). They began to take over from al-Nusra in recent weeks, thus causing a split in the organization. The original foreign Jihadi element is now taking orders from AQI, while the Syrian element is staying loyal to al-Nusra. This is causing a huge splinter in what was the most effective arm of the rebels.

BEIRUT – The most feared and effective rebel group battling President Bashar Assad, the Islamist Nusra Front, is being eclipsed by a more radical jihadi force whose aims go far beyond overthrowing the Syrian leader.

Al-Qaida’s Iraq-based wing, which nurtured Nusra in the early stages of the rebellion against Assad, has moved in and sidelined the organization, Nusra sources and other rebels say.

“Nusra is now two Nusras. One that is pursuing al-Qaida’s agenda of a greater Islamic nation, and another that is Syrian with a national agenda to help us fight Assad,” said a senior rebel commander in Syria who has close ties to the Nusra Front.

“It is disintegrating from within.”

Others said that Nusra’s Syrian contingent has already effectively collapsed, with its leader Abu Mohammad al-Golani keeping a low profile and his fighters drifting off to join other rebel groups.

Nusra fighters have claimed responsibility for the deadliest bombings of the two-year-old Syrian conflict and their brigades have led some of the most successful rebel offensives against Assad’s forces.

One Nusra fighter said he believed Baghdadi held a personal grudge against Golani because of his standing in Syria.

Golani, a radical Sunni Muslim, won popularity in Syria even among some Christians, according to the Nusra fighter. “Baghdadi did not like this,” the fighter said.

“Baghdadi and the (al-Qaida) leadership consider the Muslim Brotherhood, the Free Syrian Army and other factions including Christians as infidels and when they saw Golani was on good terms with them they were not happy.”

“That is why he announced the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant without any consultation with Golani, and he is in charge to operate in his old failed way.”

This is case of a teacher jealous at the success of his pupil. Al-Nusra saw the errors al-Qaeda in Iraq committed and refused to go down that path. Its main goal is the establishment of a greater Syrian (Bilal al-Sham) emirate, while al-Qaeda has a more transnational agenda. This new development makes the Syrian War even more complicated. You now have 2 al-Qaeda factions operating in Syria. Hopefully the war continues to drag on and all the savages kill each other.

The Syrian branch of al-Qaeda denies that they have merged with al-Qaeda in Iraq. Instead they have declared allegiance to al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.

The head of Syria’s jihadist al-Nusra Front on Wednesday pledged allegiance to al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahiri in an audio message, but distanced his group from claims it had merged with al-Qaida in Iraq.

“The sons of al-Nusra Front pledge allegiance to Sheikh Ayman al-Zawahiri,” Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani said in the recording.

But, he added, “we were not consulted” on an announcement by al-Qaida in Iraq chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on Tuesday of a merger with al-Nusra Front.

“We inform you that neither the al-Nusra command nor its consultative council, nor its general manager were aware of this announcement. It reached them via the media and if the speech is authentic, we were not consulted,” Jawlani said.

This statement by al-Nusra leader Jawlani shows that Assad lied about killing him. The Syrian War is an Islamic soap opera.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq merges with al Nusra Front

Al Nusra was an offshoot of al-Qaeda in Iraq. Assad allowed the organization to set up bases to attack American soldiers. Then when the Muslim Brotherhood began their uprising against Assad, al-Qaeda under the guise of al-Nusra Front joined in and have become the backbone of the revolt. Now in a move that just formalizes what really existed, AQI and al-Nusra officially merge.

BEIRUT (AP) — Al-Qaida’s branch in Iraq said it has merged with Syria’s extremist Jabhat al-Nusra, a move that shows the rising confidence of radicals within the Syrian rebel movement and is likely to trigger renewed fears among its international backers.

A website linked to Jabhat al-Nusra confirmed on Tuesday the merger with the Islamic State of Iraq, whose leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, first made the announcement in a 21-minute audio message posted on militant websites late Monday.

The Syrian group has made little secret of its links across the Iraqi border, but until now it has not officially declared itself to be part of al-Qaida.

Al-Baghdadi said that his group – the Islamic State of Iraq – and Syria’s Jabhat al-Nusra will now be known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.

“It is time to announce to the Levantine people and the whole world that Jabhat al-Nusra is merely an extension and part of the Islamic State of Iraq,” he said.

This is who officials in both parties want to go to war for. They want the US to assist the same organization that attacked us on 9/11 and killed US soldiers in Iraq.  If this is not treason, then I do not know what is.

Update: Hizb’Allah buries more of it members killed by al-Qaeda.

Two Hizbullah members fighting alongside Syrian government forces in the Qusayr area near the border with Lebanon were killed on Monday, a source close to the party said.

“Two members of Hizbullah who went to Syria to fight against armed groups in the Qusayr sector have been killed,” the source said.

Meanwhile, MTV had reported earlier on Monday that heavy gunshots were fired during the funeral of Hizbullah member Hamza Ibrahim Ghamlush who died in clashes in Qusayr’s countryside on Sunday.

The Hezies are not that tough when going up against a ruthless enemy.

Update II: The Muslim Brotherhood linked FSA, which the US labels as Moderates, defends their al-Qaeda allies.
