Ted Cruz renounces his Canadian citizenship

Ted Cruz officially renounces his Canadian citizenship, which he has never used.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) announced Monday evening that he will renounce his Canadian citizenship, less than 24 hours after a newspaper pointed out that the Canadian-born senator likely maintains dual citizenship.

“Now the Dallas Morning News says that I may technically have dual citizenship,” Cruz said in a statement. “Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship. Nothing against Canada, but I’m an American by birth and as a U.S. senator; I believe I should be only an American.”

The Dallas Morning News wrote in a story posted late Sunday night that Cruz likely remains a Canadian citizen, by virtue of being born there to an American mother. Having never renounced that citizenship, Cruz was technically a Canadian and an American citizen, according to legal experts.

Cruz said his mother told him that he could claim his citizenship if he ever wanted to, but that he never pursued it and thought the matter was settled.

Hopefully this will put an end to this stupid episode.

Rand Paul and Ted Cruz are rapidly becoming the dynamic duo of the Senate. Cruz backed Paul’s 13 hour filibuster against drone strikes on Americans. Now Rand Paul and Ted Cruz are promising to filibuster any Gun Control bill.

Sens. Rand Paul, Ted Cruz and Mike Lee are threatening to filibuster gun-control legislation, according to a letter they plan to hand-deliver to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s office on Tuesday.

“We will oppose the motion to proceed to any legislation that will serve as a vehicle for any additional gun restrictions,” the three conservatives wrote in a copy of the signed letter obtained by POLITICO.

[….]

Though they don’t use the word “filibuster” in the letter, the conservatives are leaving no doubt that they would filibuster on an initial procedural question — the motion to proceed.

Rand Paul and Ted Cruz are true Patriots standing up for the Civil Rights of Americans. Without Guns, we lose our freedoms and our property.

Like many on the Right, I am very disillusioned with the Republican party. You have spineless Establishment and a stubborn base both of whom are hampering the Party’s ability to win elections. The one issue keeping me from defecting to the Libertarians, who I am ideologically more in line with is Gun Rights. If the GOP caves on Guns, I will no longer automatically vote for them. They would have to earn my vote. I am not alone in this sentiment.

Despite just winning his Senate seat this past election, There is speculation mounting that Ted Cruz has an eye towards 2016. He gave a very well received speech at the conservative American Principles Project.

Texas Sen.-elect Ted Cruz advised the Republican Party to rebrand itself under a banner of “Opportunity Conservatism” during a sweeping speech Thursday night that will only stoke speculation about a 2016 presidential run.

Speaking before the conservative American Principles Project dinner at a downtown Washington hotel, Cruz said the GOP’s thumping in the 2012 elections was more the result of poor messaging and communication than the wrong ideology.

“Why did we lose? It wasn’t as the media would tell you: because the American people embraced big government, Barack Obama’s spending and debt and taxes. … That wasn’t what happened. I’m going to suggest to you a very simple reason why we lost the election: We didn’t win the argument,” Cruz said before pointedly lowering his voice. “We didn’t even make the argument.”
[….]
“We need to embrace what I call ‘Opportunity Conservatism.’ We need to conceptualize, we need to articulate conservative domestic policy with a laser focus on opportunity, on easing the means of ascent up the economic ladder,” he said.
If Ted Cruz makes any move towards running for President in 2016, expect the GOP Establishment to undermine him.
