Vietnam considers buying Israeli Heron

The Vietnamese are considering acquiring the Israeli Heron drone.

Vietnam is evaluating the purchase of Israeli-developed equipment, including advanced unmanned air systems, with the maritime surveillance version of Israel Aerospace Industries’ Heron 1 being one candidate.

Now operated by the Israeli air force as a “subcontractor” for the Israeli navy, the maritime-roled Heron 1 carries an Elta Systems search radar and an electro-optical sensor. An IAI source says the size of the aircraft’s payload bay and its available electrical supply mean additional systems can also be integrated, such as electronic countermeasures equipment.

Interesting.

Obama praises Ho Chi Minh

During a visit by Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang to the White House, Obama praised Communist leader Ho Chi Minh. This did not rub off the right way with many Vietnamese Vets considered the US lost 56,000 in conflict with that nation.

“…we discussed the fact that Ho Chi Minh was actually inspired by the U.S. Declaration of Independence and Constitution, and the words of Thomas Jefferson.”

President Obama talking to reporters alongside Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang.

It may come as some unwelcome news to the families of the nearly 60,000 Americans who died in the Vietnam War that the whole thing was just a misunderstanding.

That was the impression President Obama gave on Thursday when he spoke to the press after his meeting with Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang. Sang brought Obama a copy of a letter sent to President Harry Truman from Ho Chi Minh in which the communist dictator spoke hopefully of cooperation with the United States.

[….]

While the president and his team will no doubt dismiss any mention of this as “phony,” this, which as either a gaffe or facile flattery, will not be so easily waved off. The memories and frustrations of America’s Vietnam veterans remain strong forces even today.

This has to be one of Obama’s lowest moment.
