The Fall of Dictators

by coldwarrior ( 133 Comments › )
Filed under Economy, Military, Open thread, Venezuela at January 23rd, 2019 - 8:37 am

There is a critical error that most dictators make right before they meet the stout hemp rope and the tall tree, this critical error is not paying the military.

Say good-bye to Maduro:

Retired Maj. Gen. Cliver Alcala, a one-time aide to Chavez and now in exile, said the opposition’s newfound momentum has reverberated with the military’s lower ranks, many of whom are suffering the same hardships as regular Venezuelan families.

I am absolutely certain that right now, especially younger troops are asking themselves whether Maduro is their commander in chief or a usurper,” Alcala said. “As we say in the barracks, hunger is the only thing that can devour fear of the government.”

Trump can have this issue resolved with just the right small nudge at just the right time…

    I’ve seen some speculation that that ‘nudge’ may take the form of an invasion. From Brazil. Their new guy is trying to clean things up and they’re trying to take him down via his son (where did the money come from?).

    How reasonable any of this is I have no clue.

    Ok Chief Full of Bull is really full of bull.
    He spent most of his time in the USMC in Nebraska as a refrigerator mechanic. He was not Recon Rnger, there is no such M O S in the Corps.
    When he was stationed at El Toro Air Base he went AWOL three times. He never left the States.
    After four years he was discharged as an E1 Private, not one chevron. That is almost impossible, during the Vietnam Era rank was accelerated. The new hero of the Left.

    Meet AOC’s new policy guy. He used to work for Keith Ellison. Meet Dan Riffle.

    Riffle sees the curbing of excessive wealth as not a rational effort, but a “moral” one. People like Gates may still be good people in spite of their wealth, but their existence is morally wrong, he says.

    “Bill Gates’ money hoarding makes him greedy, but maybe he goes 6/6 on the other deadly sins and, on balance, is a good person,” he tweeted last night. “Still, he’s a policy failure.

    How ignorant to you have to be to not know that not only is Gates giving it all away but actually trying to eradicate ancient diseases in the process?

    Every Billionaire is a Policy Failure’

    Michael Reddell January 22, 2019

    https://croakingcassandra.com/2019/01/22/on-a-troubled-hugely-distorted-economy/

    I think Michael’s article is on the mark. It has been long acknowledged that the GDP growth rate in PRC is a ‘made up’ number. Whether the growth is better or worse than previous is hard to tell. Anecdotally it appears that it may be worse.

    The correcting mechanisms in open economies including adjustments to assets and currency valuations, doesn’t apply in PRC. The CCP determine valuations. Therefore transparency and measurement are compromised.

    Looking at the fundamentals as Michael alludes to may provide some guidance:
    • As Michael points out – export growth is reducing and is likely to take further serious hits as the US tariffs take full effect;
    • Debt levels of the PRC are running higher than the USA, (on a Debt to GDP ratio) without the balancing factor in USA’s case of being the reserve currency of the world which attracts funds from all of the world’s economies running surpluses;
    • As Michael points out the ability of the PRC to raise additional debt without seriously increasing costs and risking hyper inflation has run its course;
    • Evidence of productivity improvements which could underpin GDP growth is sparse;
    • Population growth is negative.
    So Michael, I believe, is pointing toward the PRC entering a reasonably prolonged period of economic stagnation. In western economies correction with the usual tools comprising a write down of asset values and a corresponding write off of toxic debt to wipe the slate clean allows a fresh start. The PRC without the mechanisms will carry forward that toxic debt further compounding the economic sluggishness and compromising any recovery.

    The issue on everyone’s mind of course is what the CCP will do about this state of affairs. Steven Ringen in his book ‘The Perfect Dictatorship China in the 21st Century’ lays out a compelling argument that contends that the PRC is becoming increasingly ideological and the interests of the people are “subsumed in the nation”, (simply masses, that do not matter individually) it will become a “totalitarian state of the most sinister kind.” “If it takes to basking in a story of its own making of national glory, pragmatism is unlikely to prevail”.

    …. oh and I forgot to add that when realistically calculating the Chinese GDP divide the published figure by 10 and then multiply by 6. About 40% of China’s GDP is made up of unicorn futures, empty cities awaiting demolition ,,, again… and figures plucked from made up regional budgets.

    for TWO solid weeks all I’ve heard is bullshit about the PRC’s GREAT economy and how it’s become the new U.S. It’s GDP is now driven by consumer spending, which thanks to it’s brand spanking new wealthy population is higher than ours, the U.S. is taking it in the neck on trade, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah BLAH.

    When I respond that 1. You’re taking their numbers at face value when you KNOW they always lie 2. If they’re telling you their debt is X you know their debt is X times some exponent that makes it completely unmanageable.

    Yet when you look at what the economists are saying, they’re talking about global slowdown because of China. Growth slowed to 6%. Now, that’s STILL growth, but that number is a lie too. Look at real estate in Vancouver where they bought everything that didn’t have wheels for the last 10 years – and it’s collapsing because that bubble is popping.

    Their OBOR ploy isn’t working because they thought they could steal stuff thru making other people default to THEM – and now what they’ve got are a bunch of infrastructure projects they don’t have the resources to finish/manage.

    The global economy is going to take it in the nuts for this because China is going to fail and fail BIG. There is no soft landing here

    I’m not too worried. Can you imagine the crap that would be pulled w/o the internet? I mean, insisting that Diane Abbott be met with awe is one thing, but thanks to the internet she’s met with revulsion and ridicule. I’m of the opinion that Corbyn’s chances to be PM would be much better if people weren’t aware that he actually did dally with that dolly. Most people don’t mind if their politicians don’t keep it in their pants as long as it’s, you know – worth it. As it is, when you’re that desperate, people just lose respect.

    I’m more concerned about the culture. Gov Cuomo celebrated that NY just passed a law allowing the murder of infants right up until the umbilical cord is cut. The WTC building was lit up in pink lights last nite to mark the occasion.

    I wouldn’t trust Guarnet as far as I could kick his little communistic arse. He’s the sewage carpetbagger. He was Kevin Rudd’s go to man on China and Rudd was a certified sociopath and most probably a psychopath, as well as being an Australian Prime Minister. Guarnet is ideologically an apologist for all of the evils of China with no excuses because he actually understands how China Inc operates and has operated for 2500 years.

    Yet Guarnet totally fails to recognise that Xi is just a ‘sock-puppet’ of the gang of Five who are pulling his strings behind the curtain. Nor does Guarnet have any idea what the Chinese intelligencia think about Xi. They openly call him a fool and a lightweight, with little or no appreciation of the wider world.

    Guarnet is typical of the academics that PM Rudd surrounded himself with, as an ego play, and then studiously ignored , out of a bad case of inferiority complex. Rudd’s one claim to fame was his ability to speak Chinese (badly) and nobody ever told him so ( especially the Chinese), but just laughed behind his back. Rudd was a second rate human being doing a third rate job at being a PM. He was one sick puppy, isolated, suspicious and vengeful and always seeing plots even when there were none. Guarnet fitted right into the world of Kevin Rudd.

    Well if you’re talking specifically about the French and Germans the answer would have to be …. NOT really.

    The French even broke the 70 year rule and seem to re-invent their Republic even faster. What number are they up to at the moment.

    The Germans are a strange bunch. Wonderfully gifted but deeply flawed at the same time.

    Perhaps they need to develop a beach culture and learn to go surfing and take life easy.

    They do and hence they get caught in gill nets pretty easily.

    I’m sitting just 30 metres from the beach on my verandah and I can catch flounder on the tidal turn pretty much whenever I want.

    I’m pretty sure it’s still the Fifth Republic.

    They don’t re-invent anything, they just graduate the next class from the same school. Literally. They have a caste system that’s every bit as tight as India’s.

    OK

    Lawrence is seeking wholesalers. We had to do the nominal ‘ask’ of Pepsico that Chinese ALWAYS ask us …. “can we haveExclusivity for the whole marketplace” The answer from us is always NO but we HAD to ask Pepsico and we all laughed about it.

    They did however give is distribution rights for a whole Province of 110 million middle class consumers and a 10 million person city. That’s more than we could EVER cover so we’re happy with that. WE have some wholesalers but they are a pain in the arse to deal with and Lawrence will use his network in China to find a wholesaler with experience in both import as well as snack food and consumables.

    The borrowing ‘well’ has gone dry for the Chinese. They owe more than the US and their actual GDP reflects an economy just 60% the size of the US. They also do not ‘own’ the globe’s Reserve Currency and that makes them a bad place to dump earned credit.

    Their own 5 ‘internal’ banks flush bad loans out of the Chinese economy by using ‘fairy dust’ to make all the ‘red’ go away and then just printing ‘new’ money to keep the Provinces churning out goods and paying the workforce, thus forestalling revolution. Eventually, (just about NOW) this circus has to stop as reality sets in, inflation bites the Chinese State and hyper-inflation pauperises the Chinese people.

    This will NOT end well and i just hope that Xi doesn’t use a ‘foreign adventure’ to distract the Chinese from the fiscal fix, that Xi has worked them into. That could be bloody and not just for the Chinese.

    I will NEVER forget this day. Everybody who had radios brought them to school and we were allowed to forget our lessons and listen to the game. The place ERUPTED. I was 8 years old.

    For the Yinzers, a picture for the ages

    Forbes Field, Pittsburgh, Oct 13, 1960 – The Steel City is a couple seconds away to becoming the The Bedlam City as Bill Mazeroski’s batted ball is in flight (look for it) and about to sail over Yankees left fielder Yogi Berra and OF wall winning the 1960 World Series for Pirates

    Hi all. So some sad news. As of this morning, HuffPost’s opinion section is no more. I and the rest of the team have been let go.

    They have a specific opinion section? I thought all of HuffPo was liberal opinion. No wonder they were let go; an opinion section would be redundant.

    @ eaglesoars:
    Morning Eagle. There was no crime other than process crimes, no collusion.
    Then the pre dawn raid was like they were getting John Gotti, over kill.
    All they had to do is order Stone to come in, the guy is no flight risk.
    The Justice Department especially the FBI. Is looking really Soviet.

    Driving home from the gym this morning I was listening to Chicago radio WIND.
    They were interviewing the pastor of a St Louis Catholic Church who was present for the whole encounter with the Covington Kids and the publicity whore Indian.
    It started with the Black Hebrews verbally attacking the kids and this priest. As it went on Phillips came over and
    Got right in front of the Sandman kid beating his drum and chanting. It became clear that Phillips was trying to taunt and intimidate. That could be construed as assault. The kids asked for and got permission to do school cheers.
    Sounds in line with the video, right?
    Sooooo, this priest calls the Bishop of the Covington Diocese to tell his story a couple of days ago. He had to leave a message and has heard nothing back. That Bishop should support these kids, and everybody should boycott the collection plate.
