Day 68 of the Great American Lockdown

by coldwarrior ( 337 Comments › )
Filed under Open thread at May 21st, 2020 - 8:00 am

Herr Wolf has just tipped his hand.

Gov. Tom Wolf said Wednesday he is talking with professional sports leagues about holding events in Pennsylvania, but he doesn’t believe residents will be completely comfortable going back to pre-pandemic normalcy until there is a coronavirus vaccine.

“Ultimately, I think what it’s going to take for everybody to feel safe going to a Penn State game or a basketball game is they have some confidence that they’re not going to get sick by being in close contact with somebody else,” he said during a call with reporters.

He said going back to “normal” will hinge on Pennsylvanians feeling fully and truly safe.

“I think that’s what it’s going to take to really get our economy back to normal, and I really think that can’t happen fully, 100%, until we have a vaccine that is foolproof,” Wolf said…“I think what it’s going to take to get people back to big events – indeed, what it’s going to take to get people back to shopping, to work , to school – is going to be, ultimately, a vaccine,” Wolf said. “Some assurance they’re not going to get sick.”

Ummmmm, no. This has gone on entirely to far.

END THE LOCKDOWN: Pennsylvania Has More COVID-19 Deaths Over Age 100 than Under Age 45

This ceased to be about public health/safety very early on. Its a power grab, a way to try to destroy Trump, and a way toward voter fraud. It’s that simple.

Completely useless but interesting statistic: We took 19600 alarm calls last week. Average response time 23 seconds.

I’ve had my first two days on the phone, and things went pretty well. Last couple days in the classroom today and tomorrow, I get a three day weekend, and then work eight days 630 in the morning to 3 PM.

And I’m getting another bout of getting logged out of the site anytime I leave.

My favorite book is “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

But my favorite movie is still “All About Eve.”

BART better redo the train schedule soon. This morning at 6:00 a.m. there were five people standing on my BART car (you aren’t supposed to share a seat, but standing right over someone is okay, I guess). When they first went to 30-minute intervals, there were maybe five people on the same train.

I’m getting hammered with paperwork again – but I just wanted to remind everyone about the gestapo state that supposedly can’t happen here. That gym – in NJ, I beleive – that opened – all of a sudden the sewer backed up into the place. No other facility in the mall had that happen. And then the health dept showed up and shut them down.

KCRA (Sacramento NBC station) was reporting that Democrats are even fed up with Newsom and the Legislature and their handling of this. Football Savant Offspring had an old friend stop by last night and wanted to talk politics of all things with ME. Said that he was joining the WalkAway movement. The way the media was lying about this epidemic and seeing how Trump wanted to get everyone back and making money and doing well convinced him to join the MAGA ranks.

“hau(en)” doesn’t only mean to hit. It can e.g. also mean to put on the clothes (I hau mi ins Gwand) or to go away (also in Germany: hau ab! – go away or Shove off!) or “I hau mi o” (Ich haue mich ab) means laughing with a bit of Schadenfreude.

oh wow. Here’s the court order re Sullivan. The last line reads: The government is invited to respond

    https://twitter.com/Techno_Fog/status/1263545357318971394

  33. 35 | May 21, 2020 4:05 pm

    @ eaglesoars:

Gorka has it wrong. The Court of Appeals has told Sullivan he must RESPOND to the Writ. Meaning he needs to file a response in writing justifying his absurd posture on the dismissal of this matter. DoJ, as another party in interest, is also invited to submit a brief. My guess is that one will be short and sweet: “The Department of Justice advises this court that it JOINS the Petitioner in the relief sought in this Emergency Writ of Mandamus.” Sullivan is going to have to justify his preposterous re-writing of the Federal Code of Criminal Procedure. Good luck with that, Sparky.

This is incredibly fast decision by a rather diverse 3-judge panel: Henderson was appointed by Bush 43, Wilkins by Obama and Rao by Trump.

Minnesota, New Jersey Churches Announce They Will Ignore Fascist Tyrants’ Decrees and Reopen

Phil Murphy murdered thousands of elderly citizens by ordering their nursing homes to be filled with people known to be infected with COVID-19 and contagious. And he knew he was deliberately infecting the only group at serious risk of death due to the disease.

So yeah — let’s do all the things this murderous fascist tells us to.

Devastating Mississippi Church Fire Investigated As Arson, May Be Because They Dared To Be Open And Hold Services

The First Pentecostal Church of Holly Springs in Mississippi burned down early Wednesday morning. The congregation had been in a legal battle to continue holding services despite the novel coronavirus outbreak and subsequent lockdown orders.

The building went up in flames between 2-4 a.m. Investigators said the church was spray-painted with graffiti before an explosion blew out the front of the building, according to Fox 13. Maj. Kelly McMillian of the Marshall Count Sheriff’s Department confirmed the fire to be a criminal act of arson.

Thomas More Society senior counsel and lawyer for the church, Stephen Crampton, spoke with Fox News about the fire and said the perpetrators spray-painted a message that read, “I Bet you stay home now you hypokrits.”

“We’re in a time where I don’t think it’s any secret that there’s a growing hostility toward churches, across the board,” Crampton said. “And now, here are churches like First Pentecostal that are sort of stirring up the waters by being outspoken and somewhat firm about seeking to protect their Constitutional rights.”

When this first came out, this was touted as the Satan Bug (interesting book BTW) and the whole idea was to not overwhelm the hospital system. People are now seeing that this is the equivalent of another flu epidemic and not the fourth horseman of the apocalypse and are royally Pi$$ed that the goalposts keep getting moved. After not overwhelming the system, it was flattening the curve, and now it’s “when there is a vaccine”

her comment about how social media companies are influencing elections is spot on. They are either neutral platforms and therefor public businesses or they are partisan businesses providing in-kind support to one political party. In the latter case, they need to declare that they are and file with the FEC

While economists say China’s economic data can’t always be trusted, they now have a new dilemma – there is no data.

On Friday, China said it wouldn’t be setting a target for economic growth for this year.

That’s unprecedented – the Chinese government hasn’t done this since it began publishing such goals in 1990.

Having a disinfectant wipe handy, throwing away any bags food comes in, disinfecting everything with warm soapy water before it makes it past the inner garage door, immediately washing all outer clothing worn at stores (garage to washing machine). Other people make their own decisions. As long as they aren’t TRYING to infect me I respect their personal right to decide how to proceed. Masks are a pain in the ass (and fog my glasses) and some I notice dispense with the whole thing. Their choice. It’s the best we can do.

“Chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19: why might they be hazardous?”

    (…)

Verified data from an international registry comprising 671 hospitals in six continents were used to compare patients with COVID-19 who received chloroquine (n=1868), hydroxychloroquine (n=3016), chloroquine with a macrolide (n=3783), or hydroxychloroquine with a macrolide (n=6221) within 48 h of COVID-19 diagnosis, with 81 144 controls who did not receive these drugs. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality and the occurrence of de-novo non-sustained or sustained ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation was also analysed. A Cox proportional hazard model accounting for many confounding variables, including age, sex, ethnicity, comorbidities, other medications, and COVID-19 severity, showed a significant increase in the risk of in-hospital mortality with the four treatment regimens compared with the control group (hazard ratios [HRs] of 1·335 [95% CI 1·223–1·457] to 1·447 [1·368–1·531]). Analyses using propensity score matching by treatment group supported this result. The increased risk of in-hospital mortality was similar in men (1·293 [1·178–1·420] to 1·408 [1·309–1·513]) and women (1·338 [1·169–1·531] to 1·494 [1·334–1·672]). The incidence of repetitive ventricular arrhythmias ranged from 4·3% to 8·1% in patients treated with a 4-aminoquinoline, compared with 0·3% in the control group (p<0·0001)."

Such as accusing Trump of xenophobia and racism for blocking infected Chinese from traveling to the US. And to add insult to injury he claims to have been a major player in the 0bungle admin which left the country unprepared for a pandemic. I agree, that on-line crap is not what we pay steep property-taxes for in America. In my incredibly humble opinion, they should just assign a couple of GOOD books per week, to be read and reviewed in 100 words or less, and be done with it. The theorems, chemistry and physics stuff can wait until the brazen overlords tire of their pseudo-hegemony, or get strung up by their balls, whatever comes first. Hi Calo — Oh, the effin’ masks! I’ve been WFH, and my kids have been doing most of the grocery shopping (we pay for theirs, so we’re “even” on that) so it hasn’t been a thing for me as much, but today I went on an extended shopping trip for hardware and food where I had to employ both the mask and my reading glasses. It was warm and raining, so the humidity was through the roof, and all over my specs. By the time I finally escaped the last store, I was actually feeling faint and completely stressed. I ripped off the mask on my way to the car, and stood bent over in the rain with one hand on the trunk of my vehicle, trying to recover. I wasn’t laughing, but I was in a better mood then than I am now, after Obergruppenfuhrer Vhitmer’s latest tantrum.

My “valve” is pulling the mask away from my face when I’m in an aisle by myself, so I can suck in some oxygen and escape the feeling of hypoxia, imaginary as it may be. Not that imaginary, is my feeling.

So, apparently the ADA has been suspended during the duration of this “crisis”. My disabled nephew has been denied medical services because he cannot wear one of their fraudulent non-effective masks for his ear appointment. This is even with the doctor himself saying it was perfectly fine with him. The administrative staff in charge of allowing entry refused him entry even after the doctor came down and tried to mediate.

The attorney his parents contacted just shrugged and said they have an out by saying that they just have to say he “could be” asymptomatic” and the court will give them a free pass.

Did you give Ozark a real chance? The series and characters really grow on most people, including the wife and I, and our kids, all of whom have different tastes.

You ever try “The Wire?” They spent a lot converting that classic series to HD, and I’m watching it again on my own — my wife won’t buy in, but I love it. I’m into the second season now, after having watched the original version off Pirate Bay as it was coming out. I’m mesmerized by it, more and more, while She, my wife Karen (I mean, Maria), is made sleepy. I love the way they cover all the different angles of Big City Issues, from the kids slinging dope in the projects to the highest echelons of political power, and also the monkeyshines of the local media whores. It’s great stuff.

Other series I binged and enjoyed, were “Dexter” and “Six Feet Under.” The guy who plays Dexter is a very different character in “Six Feet Under,” which was out earlier. Not sure if that matters. Another series the namby-pamby wife eschewed, was “Dexter,” for reasons of blood that you will soon find out. She loved “Six Feet Under,” as did I.

I assume you are familiar with “The Sopranos,” which started all this bingeing business. I bought a couple of seasons of that one off Ebay on VHS, trying to catch up. If you haven’t watched it by now, you need to stop everything you’re doing, including treatment, and get it done. And watch the famous last episode with an open mind, and then shut up about it forever.

We had a “Paint And Pour” evening, with the kids and their significant others. I painted a “happy little trees” mountainside with a schweet little cabin, and some sketchy characters out in front of it, around a campfire. It’s a beautiful Rembrandt, by Van Gogh. Or something. I also drank some homebrew beer and had a couple of shots of Wild Turkey. My painting wasn’t the worst of the lot, but it wasn’t the best, either — my wife and kids are kind of artsy, it turns out. My youngest painted a picture of the Sedona Spiritual Vortex that turned out better than this actual photo:

My brother’s opinion is if it was something more than an ear appointment he’d probably push harder, as it is it isn’t worth it. The lawyer basically said that everyone is so paranoid about COVID lawsuits that they don’t really care about this kind. THey’d rather risk this kind of suit than have 100 people claiming that an unmasked kid spread COVID to everyone. Of course all sane people know exactly how likely that scenario is.

Both of the Narcos series (the original, set in Colombia, and the Narcos: Mexico spinoff) are good. The only negative is that the Spanish-speaking characters all speak Spanish with subtitles (which is about 75% of the dialogue), so if you don’t speak Spanish, you have to really pay attention all the time.

How is the stay at home order allowed to stand? I thought she was limited to the number of days that emergency powers could be exercised without legislative action?

She probably got a special dispensation from St. Greta Thunberg, who is apparently the newest COVID-19 expert.

On China’s penetration of the Pacific States

It sums up China’s aggressive stance and assertiveness. There is no doubt they are taking over the South Pacific. I was in Vanuatu in January and was shocked to see the extent to which it had become a Chinese satellite – almost every shop owner was Chinese and almost everything was written in Mandarin. The upshot is that even though people are keen for Chinese investments, everyone acknowledges that Chinese presence is not benign and carries a dark side that should be kept in check. China is simply not liked – even feared. Certainly not the kind of soft power that can allow China to map a serene long term future in the region. Fragile and short-sighted.

Apparently that article was written by a bunch of Karens and Karls:

SO IS IT OK TO WEAR MY MASK WITH A VALVE IF IT’S LEGAL IN MY AREA?
Not really! [editorial comment: screw you!] Yes, if you have a mask with a valve, you are protecting yourself as well as you would be if you wore a mask without a valve. There’s no difference in personal protection according to anything published in the CDC or elsewhere. But if you have a mask with a valve, you’re not really protecting those around you, which is at least half of the point of wearing a cotton mask in the first place.

Not that it matters all that much anyway. COVID is 125 nm in size. While a mask may protect from droplets dispersing, I believe the mask would be a reasonably good filter medium, and with the force of one’s breath, would propel the virus, stripped from the droplets, into the air. I mean that’s why we use filters for things – to filter out the big stuff and let the small stuff through. Not sure how small a particle microfibers would filter. But then that means you are creating an nice breeding ground right in front of your face

Yeah, I sure as hell am not going to wear a mask. I’m highly susceptible to respritory infections. This is a sure way to put me in the hospital where my chances of getting COVID actually INCREASE. Damn leftists. Luckily only complete nutjobs and people who work jobs that give them no choice wear masks in my state. No orders from on high. If a business requires me to wear a mask to go there, it’s simple, I don’t go there. Luckily, my job does not require my wearing one since I work with my nephews. (THough my company did send me surgical masks and handy instructions on how to wear N95 masks, figure that one out.)

It’s fascinating to watch how they’re trying to do this. It has 2 purposes – to acclimate us to Big Brother – but also, if you look under the covers, the federal monies graft machine is humongous. One of these ‘contact tracers’ isn’t employed by the Feds. There are companies springing up to take grant money and pass some of it around to ‘tracers’ (who they are going to hire from homeless camps) and pocket the rest. It’s a great gig and if you know how the system works and can start one of these companies, you can make a fortune.

Tracing does nothing to inform decisions. Because the snapshot it provides is out of date as soon as its taken. It is worse than useless, it’s making you chase a horse that is out of the barn. Anybody who says it’s necessary is either a liar or a fool.

The rapid mutation of the virus is why I won’t take the vaccine. The one and only time I ever took the flu shot because it was an especially bad year for the flu, I caught it anyway. Then I found out that the flu shot only covers certain flu strains to begin with.

The coronavirus gave new impetus to San Francisco’s experiment with homeless tent cities. As Breitbart News noted in March, both San Francisco and Los Angeles originally planned to move as many homeless people indoors as possible to prevent the spread of the virus in homeless encampments. However, experts soon learned that the virus spread more easily indoors than outdoors, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advised against moving the homeless indoors. San Francisco reversed course and encouraged homeless people to stay in tents during the outbreak….

All of the Whitmer polls I can find were published 2-3 days ago, when Botox Karen was talking about opening things up, before her little tantrum yesterday. I promise you her numbers are going to take a hit in the next round, even with the pollsters all leaning precipitously Left. People are quite pissed around here.

Somebody who follows Michigan politics very closely, and has even run for office (State Senate) and lost before, says the main thing about Whitmer is her burning ambition to rise high in the political game. You can see that very easily, as she pretends to play coy about the chances of her joining the Biden ticket. She’d stomp over her own mother and children to get this chance. All of her actions and pronouncements during the Covid thingy have been tailored to position her as the Anti-Trump.

Agreed! But the question is – is it working? I suspect not. A lot of the ease of being anti-Trump is not only does it not cost you anything, it comes with perks. The anti-Trump people are suffering just as much as anybody else. You think those floods from the failed dam discriminated? You think the anti-Trump people don’t have to stay in shelters?
