Google to buy 6.6% stake in ADT in home security push

(Reuters) – Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google is buying a 6.6% stake in home security firm ADT Inc (ADT.N) for $450 million in a deal that will allow it to provide service to customers of its Nest home security devices.

Shares of ADT nearly doubled to $17 in trading before the bell on Monday and were set to open above their IPO price of $14 for the first time since going public in 2018.

The companies will work to combine Google and Nest products with its installation, service and professional monitoring network, ADT said

This is a fascinating article on how a slight gene mutation that we have but the great apes don’t (but Neanderthals & Denisovians did) occurred to save us from malarial type diseases – but has left us exposed to a lot of other things

New research has uncovered evidence that mutations arising between 600,000 and 2 million years ago were part of a complex of adaptations that may have inadvertently made us prone to inflammatory diseases and even other pathogens.

An international team of researchers compared around a thousand human genomes with a few from our extinct cousins, the Neanderthals and Denisovans, to fill in missing details on the evolution of a family of chemicals that coat the human body’s cells.

I was reading about Merrick Garland a little. And people seem to be implying that a legal standard exists not to create a Supreme Court judge in an election year. To me that is just BS. The reason Merrick Garland failed is that the R’s owned the Senate and expressed political will. No law was violated or set.

If RBG dies this year then the Senate is within its bounds to rush a nomination through if they can. or not. It’s up to whoever holds the senate.

I was speaking with an old friend recently (from eastern PA, about our age, former Marine officer) and mentioned to me he is thinking about retiring and leaving the US with family in tow. I told him there are no green pastures across the pond and he should consider simply moving to an area of the US with more like minded people instead of staying around DC.

Largest U.S. Gas Utility Sues California Over Climate Policy

Southern California Gas Co is suing the California Energy Commission over the state’s climate policy and attempts to phase out natural gas as a source of heating and cooking.

Southern California Gas Co, owned by Sempra Energy, is trying to shield itself from policy actions that could ban the hook-up of natural gas for all new homes.

The California Energy Commission, for its part, is promoting building efficiency and emissions-cutting rules for new construction, encouraging home developers to build all-electric buildings in the state.

For example, last year, Berkeley, California, passed an ordinance requiring all new homes to be all-electric with no gas hook-ups beginning in January 2020. Berkeley’s primary motivation for the gas hook-up ban was to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote the use of clean energy.

Climate activists say that natural gas is a fossil fuel and is responsible for a large part of emissions from buildings, while natural gas companies are pitching natural gas as an affordable and stable ‘bridge’ fuel toward all-renewable electricity generation.

“Natural gas and renewable gas are clean, affordable, resilient, and reliable sources of energy on which millions of California consumers and businesses depend,” Southern California Gas Co said in its lawsuit, as carried by the Los Angeles Times.

“Natural gas has played a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality,” the company added.

California, New York, and Massachusetts have started the process of phasing out natural gas. In fact, in California, some 30 cities have already banned natural gas in new buildings.

In another California lawsuit over the natural gas phase-out, the California Restaurant Association (CRA) sued the City of Berkeley last year over the ban on the use of natural gas in newly built buildings, in order to protect Berkeley’s businesses and consumers from having to pay higher energy bills.

  61. eaglesoars
    68 | August 4, 2020 4:42 pm

The best theory so far as to the cause of the explosions comes from Farouk. He says that the Rhosus, a ship flying the Moldovan flag was carrying 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate to Mozambique, in 2013. It experienced technical difficulties and docked at Beirut.

The owner abandoned the ship, and left the crew stranded. The Lebanese unloaded the material at the port and it remained in the warehouses until today, when it left all by itself.

Ok, this year I’m homeschooling my 16 year old so I’m getting a view into how things work. I have found out through the association I joined that things are NOT normal this year. Since there are so many new parents homeschooling this year, the public schools think they can get away with a lot of illegal crap. My district isn’t too bad they only tried to get a little more information than they were allowed by law, but some districts are actually demanding entire schedules and records, entire forms not required by state law, and all kinds of garbage by state law.

To be clear MT state law only requires a letter of intent to homeschool and your childrens immunization records/religious waiver of immunization. Then the next year your letter of intent must include a line stating that your child has completed the mininum required hours of schooling. Some of the counties in the state have panicked over their lessening power with so many parents pulling their kids after this covid stupidity (and the upcoming asinine covid class “restructuring”) and have decided to try and make the process difficult and take advantage of parents who may not be as aware of the law.

During his presser, Trump said some of our generals think Beirut was an attack (altho the Lebanese gov’t is saying it was a welding accident)

An attack to accomplish what? Destroy stuff that’s been there for 6-7 years?

Also, the brown smoke bothered me. I watched videos today of military blowing up about a ton of the AN stuff in Afghanistan. The smoke wasn’t brown.

So – your intrepid researcher went researching.

Start with Iran and explosives. Because why not.

    (2016)

Iran announces plan to produce explosives used in missile warheads
Defense minister says country wants to make Octogen to improve ‘destructive power’; material also used in nuke detonators

    https://www.timesofisrael.com/iran-says-its-planning-to-produce-explosives-used-in-missile-warheads/

I never heard of Octogen BUT

Octogen is HMX and I have heard of HMX

HMX is more complicated to manufacture than most explosives, and this confines it to specialist applications. It may be produced by nitration of hexamine in the presence of acetic anhydride, paraformaldehyde and ammonium nitrate.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMX

so I googled ‘HMX brown smoke’ and found this

if the heating rate is slow enough, the sample is observed to melt in bulk and commence vigorous boiling…The liquid is brown in color and quickly disappears in a puff of brown smoke

This is page 42 of a paper, 1989, Naval Weapons Center called Nitromine Composite Solid Propellant Modeling.

    https://apps.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a220198.pdf

So I dunno, just thought I’d throw that out there.

I just checked. The detonation/explosive velocity of AN is about 3000 m/sec, HMX is about 9100 m/sec.

I don’t know how many frames per second all the cell phones generally record at, but if we knew that could the explosive velocity of the 2nd explosion be calculated somehow?

A high explosive is often used as an initiator for a massive load of AMFO low explosive.
Theoretically however there should have been a VERY short (imperceptible) period between the two explosions.

Look like a lot (2700 tonnes) of ammonium nitrate – yellow/brown fumes and HMX or similar – no black smoke from expected TNT unless it is aluminised. You can even see the shock condensation off the blast. Obviously no rules regarding magazine storage. Thing is, the explosives are usually stable unless initiated by a contained fire or a primer – so someone is playing around. In the 1000’s of tonnes of explosive from the size of it

The brown fumes are NOx fumes from the unfuelled ammonium nitrate. Primer could have been 0.5kg of anything, even a contained fire as at Texas City.
Al Jazeera have a video of the blast. Looks like a fire initiated the blast – heaps of whitish smoke rising from the site followed by the explosion.

    @ eaglesoars:
    Some BIG bang stats:-
    Timeline of major disasters

    Country City/Location Date Deaths Notes
United Kingdom Faversham, Kent April 2, 1916 115 The Great Explosion: On April 2, 1916, a factory in Uplees, Faversham, exploded after a fire spread to a store of 25 tons of TNT and 700 tons of ammonium nitrate. The blast at the Explosives Loading Company killed 115 people and shattered windows in Southend-on-Sea across the Thames Estuary while the tremor was felt in Norwich.[1]
United States Morgan, New Jersey (now Sayreville) October 4, 1918 ~100 T. A. Gillespie Company Shell Loading Plant explosion: On October 4, 1918, an explosion at the Morgan Depot occurred leading to many artillery shells being launched into the air, some of which landed on a neighbouring warehouse where 4000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate were stored in barrels. One of the shells caused a large explosion, but the majority of the ammonium nitrate did not detonate.
Germany Kriewald July 26, 1921 19 On July 26, 1921, in this railway town (now in Poland) workers tried to dislodge 30 tonnes of ammonium nitrate that had aggregated (solidified into one mass) in two wagons. When mining explosives were used on this solid mass the wagons exploded and killed nineteen people.[2]
Germany Oppau September 21, 1921 561 Explosion at BASF plant Oppau: Another attempt at disaggregation of a fertilizer mix with industrial explosives caused the death of 561 people and left more than 2000 injured. The fertilizer was a 50:50 mixture of ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate and the factory had used this method of disaggregation over 20,000 times without incident. It is thought that, on this occasion, poor mixing had led to certain parts of the mass containing more ammonium nitrate than others. Only 450 tonnes exploded, out of 4500 tonnes of fertilizer stored in the warehouse.[3]
    United States Nixon, New Jersey
(now Edison Township) March 1, 1924 20 1924 Nixon Nitration Works disaster: On March 1, 1924, a fire and several large explosions destroyed a warehouse containing ammonium nitrate at the Nixon Nitration Works. The explosiveness of the product was perhaps enhanced, as it had been prepared using nitric acid that had previously been used for the production of TNT.
United States Muscle Shoals, Alabama 1925 0 On April 4, 1925, and May 3, 1925, two carloads, each containing 220 barrels of ammonium nitrate, were dispatched from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and caught fire in transportation. The barrels had been stored in a warehouse with varying humidity for 6 years, so it is believed that they were ignited by friction with their nitrate-impregnated manila paper lining. Other shipments were reportedly more successful.[4]
France Miramas August 5, 1940 0 240 tonnes of ammonium nitrate in sacks exploded after being hit by a shell from a nearby fire in a munitions train.[5]
Belgium Tessenderlo April 29, 1942 189 Another attempt to disaggregate a pile of 150 tonnes of ammonium nitrate with industrial explosives ended tragically on April 29, 1942: 189 people were killed, 900 wounded.[6]
United States Texas City April 16, 1947 581 Texas City disaster

    Texas City disaster
The disaster drew the first class action lawsuit against the United States government, on behalf of 8,485 victim…

: The cargo ship Grandcamp was being loaded on April 16, 1947, when a fire was detected in the hold: at this point, 2300 tons of ammonium nitrate in sacks were already aboard.[7] The captain responded by closing the hold and pumping in pressurised steam. One hour later, the ship exploded, killing several hundred people and setting fire to another vessel, the High Flyer, which was moored 250 metres away and which contained 1050 tonnes of sulfur and 960 tons of ammonium nitrate. The Grandcamp explosion also created a powerful earthshock that broke windows as far as 40 miles away and knocked two small planes flying at 1,500 feet (460 m) out of the sky. The High Flyer exploded the next day, after having burned for sixteen hours. 500 tonnes of ammonium nitrate on the quayside also burned, but without exploding, probably because it was less tightly packed. All but one member of the Texas City fire department died.
France Brest July 28, 1947 29 The Norwegian cargo ship Ocean Liberty was loaded with 3300 tonnes of ammonium nitrate and various flammable products when it caught fire at 12:30 July 28, 1947. The captain ordered the hold to be sealed and pressurised steam was pumped in. As this did not stop the fire, the vessel was towed out of the harbour at 14:00, and exploded at 17:00. The explosion caused 29 deaths and serious damage to the port of Brest.[8]
    – Red Sea 1953 0 A fire was detected on the cargo ship Tirrenia on January 23, 1953, while it was carrying 4000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate. Attempts to extinguish the fire with steam were unsuccessful, and the ship was abandoned before it exploded later in the night.[9]
United States Roseburg, Oregon August 7, 1959 14 The Roseburg Blast: A truck carrying dynamite and ammonium nitrate caught fire early in the morning of August 7, 1959. When it exploded it killed 14 people and injured 125 more. Several blocks of downtown Roseburg were destroyed. The accident is locally referred to as “The Blast”.
United States Traskwood, Arkansas December 17, 1960 0 On December 17, 1960, a 96 freight car train suffered partial derailment, in which the last 23 cars were derailed. The derailed cars included: four fuel oil tank cars, two tank cars of gasoline, three tank cars of petroleum oil, four cars of lube oil drums, three cars of liquid fertilizer, one car of fuming nitric acid and two cars of fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate. In this particular accident, neither car of ammonium nitrate exploded.[10] However, the nitric acid reacted with the fuel oil, essentially creating ANFO to feed the conflagration, resulting in the spread of the ammonium nitrate material around the incident site.[11]
Australia Taroom, Queensland August 30, 1972 3 A truck carrying ammonium nitrate experienced an electrical fault and caught fire north of Taroom. After the driver stopped and parked the burning truck, two brothers from a nearby cattle property who saw the fire rode up on motorbikes to assist. The three men were killed when the truck exploded. The explosion burnt out more than 2000 acres of surrounding bushland, and left a deep crater where the truck had been parked. A memorial to the three men was unveiled at the accident site in 2013.[12][13][14][15]
United States Kansas City, Missouri November 29, 1988 6 On November 29, 1988, at 4:07 AM two trailers containing approximately 50,000 lb (23,000 kg) of the explosive ANFO (ammonium nitrate with fuel oil) exploded at a construction site located near the 87th street exit of Highway 71 in Kansas City, Missouri. The explosives were to be used in the blasting of rock while constructing Highway 71. The result of the explosions were the deaths of six firemen from the Kansas City Fire Department’s Pumper Companies 30 and 41. Both companies were dispatched after 911 calls indicated that a pickup truck located near the trailers had been set on fire. The responding companies were warned that there were explosives on-site; however, they were unaware that the trailers were essentially magazines filled with explosives. At 4:07 AM one of the “magazines” caught fire and a catastrophic explosion occurred, killing all six firemen instantly — only sparing remains were found. A second blast occurred 40 minutes later, although all fire crews had been pulled back at this time. The blasts created two craters, each approximately 100 feet (30 m) wide and 8 feet (2.4 m) deep. The explosions also shattered windows within a 10-mile (16 km) area and could be heard 40 miles (64 km) away. It was later determined that the explosions were acts of arson, set by individuals embroiled in a labor dispute with the construction company contracted to build the highway.[16][17]
Papua New Guinea Porgera Gold Mine August 2, 1994 11 At 9:45 am, 2 August 1994, 11 workers were killed when the sensitised AN emulsion plant they were working on exploded at the Porgera Gold Mine. The fatal explosion involved at most a few tonnes of explosive. A larger explosion of about 80 tonnes of emulsion (Ammonium Nitrate Emulsion, ANE, UN 3375) was caused by fires under storage facilities at the site at 11:02 AM. There were no fatalities in the second explosion because the site had been evacuated. A mushroom cloud was seen to rise.[18]
ANE is an emulsion of ammonium nitrate, fuel and water.

The governor of New York has begged the city’s wealthy, who fled the coronavirus outbreak, to return and help it recover.

Andrew Cuomo said he was extremely worried about New York City weathering the Covid-19 aftermath if too many of the well-heeled taxpayers who fled to second homes decide there is no need to move back.

“They are in their Hamptons homes, or Hudson Valley or Connecticut. I talk to them literally every day. I say. ‘When are you coming back? I’ll buy you a drink. I’ll cook,’ “ Mr Cuomo told MSNBC, naming popular getaways for the rich.

“They’re not coming back right now. And you know what else they’re thinking, if I stay there, they pay a lower income tax because they don’t pay the New York City surcharge. So, that would be a bad place if we had to go there.”>/i>

When you get a pile (bulk or pallets of bags) it can contain itself and burn to detonation. Looks like a fire (burning for awhile from the amount of smoke) then detonation. The ground would have directed the blast upwards.
Just a silly accident again by the looks of it.

  106. Guggi
    114 | August 5, 2020 7:55 am

    Beirut:

“The 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate that detonated on Tuesday can be traced back to the Rhosus, which called into the Port of Beirut on September 23, 2013 after experiencing technical difficulties. The ship, sailing under a Moldovan flag, was en route from Georgia to Mozambique. Once in port, the Rhosus underwent an inspection by Port State Control technicians who found significant deficiencies and banned it from resuming operations.

The majority of the ship’s crew were repatriated, but the captain and three of the crew members were forced to stay aboard. Unfortunately, their situation would continue to deteriorate as all attempts to contact the owner of the ship failed to elicit a response. Further complicating matters were immigration regulations that prevented the crew from even deboarding the ship.

With the crew unable to deboard, and with no incoming supplies or provisions, the situation aboard the Rhosus quickly became a humanitarian issue which even diplomatic efforts failed to resolve. Eventually, the crew contacted legal professionals who successfully argued that the crews’ lives were threatened not only by their stranding, but also due to the dangerous nature of the cargo. The crew received an emergency injunction from the judge, and shortly thereafter left Beirut.

After the departure of the Rhosus’ crew, and the continued silence of its owner, the Port Authority was left with responsibility over the highly explosive contents of the ship. Although currently unsubstantiated, it is possible that legal claims prevented the auctioning of the ammonium nitrates which were left on land storage as the only avenue for the safekeeping of the material. At some point between July 2014 and October 2015, the ammonium nitrate was moved to a warehouse where, ostensibly, it remained until the catastrophic explosion.”

    And more. July 26

Over the course of the last several weeks, more than a dozen key Iranian military sites and Iranian-backed militia sites have been bombed, set on fire, or otherwise sabotaged.

This includes Iran’s nuclear program headquarters and its top missile development site.

Then, what are still only known to be civilian infrastructure sites were also hit with mysterious fires throughout the country, including a key petrochemical plant and a shipyard.

Moving to Syria, successful precise Israeli attacks on Iranian-backed Hezbollah sites where several Iranian officers just happened to be hanging out have also increased lately.

On Thursday, an Iranian passenger jet was buzzed by a US F-15 fighter & forced to drop altitude abruptly in an incident originally blamed on an Israeli fighter jet.

And finally, (so far), massive explosions occurred at Iranian-backed militia bases near Baghdad Sunday. The militias are blaming Israel for those attacks, but the U.S. may have been involved.
    .
    .
But the answer, based on my sources, is there are at least two key military leaders in Iran who have turned against the regime. They are supplying the U.S. and Israel access to source code for cyberattacks and the info on the movements of other commanders.
    .
    .
The ever more clear message to Iran from the U.S. and Israel is that they now know where all the top weapons and commanders are hiding. The passenger jet buzzing, the supposedly civilian infrastructure sites, and the major damage to the nuclear and missile locations are all the result of breached information that was beyond “top secret.”

The result is there are essentially no Iranian secret ops anymore. And whenever possible, the U.S. & Israel will “deactivate” those targets with several means at their disposal.
    .
    .
The cause of these defections is likely the aftermath of confusion and power shifting that occurred as a result of the U.S. operation to find and kill the late commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Qassem Soleimani. General Soleimani’s replacement, Esmail Ghani, is not as respected, and the slightly changed inner circle he has arranged at the IRGC left some other generals feeling a bit left out.

Listening to Dan Bongino about voter fraud. A CNN host was berating a conservative that voter fraud didn’t exist. It does. Its just hard to prove by the standards legally required. We would have to start auditing selected elections.

I prefer the actually polling place and pulling the lever or punching chads. Then I am mostly confident the election was impartial. Even there though on the west coast I was in line behind a soy boy who declared to his friends he was so excited about the election that he cast a provisional ballot by mail and also was voting in person to make sure he was counted.

The provisional ballots count. So he voted twice. They only get audited if the election is close. But if enough ballot harvesting occur they don’t get counted except in the general vote. The immoral side votes twice. The moral side votes once.

That probably wasn’t ANFO mix in Beirut. Just Ammonium Nitrate and a contained fire that set it off …. from someone who knows what he’s talking about. The Brown smoke was partially burned NOx and then the main explosion was as a result of that initial explosion after a hiatus.

Luckily I found a curriculum system that I worked with as a teacher in a private school that I can afford so I’m all set. Besides, my son only has two more years. Agreed. The problem we have right now is that the public schools are sending the parents that are homeschooling a form to apply for “public funds”. Right now it’s harmless, they get applications for various education grants and funds that are usually reserved for small schools and such. Down the road though it could become a problem. (Most if not all homeschoolers do not qualify for any of these programs.)
