the guillotine has made an appearance in portland. it appeared in france in 1792.

Robespierre in February 1794 in a speech explained the necessity of terror:

If the basis of popular government in peacetime is virtue, the basis of popular government during a revolution is both virtue and terror; virtue, without which terror is baneful; terror, without which virtue is powerless. Terror is nothing more than speedy, severe and inflexible justice; it is thus an emanation of virtue; it is less a principle in itself, than a consequence of the general principle of democracy, applied to the most pressing needs of the patrie [homeland, fatherland].[8][4]

and then Robespierre was put to the guillotine 28 july 1794.

be careful, antifa, what you ask for.

    Correct
And there are data that suggests that income tax take does indeed happen at specific rates of personal tax, (see Ireland and Singapore) and tax ‘minimisation’ vanishes because further attempts to minimise tax is just not worth the trouble. Millions of Tax accountants will be pissed!

NZ has a three level tax. Not ideal as a single flat rate works best. The Mean rate in NZ is around 20% tax. A bit higher than the ideal rate where the take flattens between 12 – 16% I think but close enough. But that also has a 15% Goods and Services Tax as well on ALL transactions so it’s not yet ideal. Just a GST of around 15% and NO income tax and watch the economy bloom….except for Tax Lawyers and accountants!

    🙂

So Scott Petersen has had his death penalty sentence overturned by the California Supreme Court, but his murder conviction stands. Our Supreme Court always finds a reason to remove dirtbags from the “Green Mile.” The exception being Richard Allen Davis (murderer of Polly Klaas) and Ramon Salcido (murdered two of his little girls; one survived), because if they even ATTEMPTED to take them off, the pitchforks would be marching on San Francisco.

What this means for Scotty is that those grotesque girlies who are groupies can now go visit him on the weekends. They’ll no doubt move him from San Quentin to another facility – probably Corcoran.

In case anyone was unsure how the MSM was going to cover the GOP convention:

Nominating Trump, Republicans Rewrite His Record

President Trump and his political allies mounted a fierce and misleading defense of his political record on the first night of the Republican convention on Monday, while unleashing a barrage of attacks on Joseph R. Biden Jr. and the Democratic Party that were unrelenting in their bleakness.

Hours after Republican delegates formally nominated Mr. Trump for a second term, the president and his party made plain that they intended to engage in sweeping revisionism about Mr. Trump’s management of the coronavirus pandemic, his record on race relations and much else. And they laid out a dystopian picture of what the United States would look like under a Biden administration, warning of a “vengeful mob” that would lay waste to suburban communities and turn quiet neighborhoods into war zones.

At times, the speakers and prerecorded videos appeared to be describing an alternate reality: one in which the nation was not nearing 180,000 deaths from the coronavirus; in which Mr. Trump had not consistently ignored serious warnings about the disease; in which the president had not spent much of his term appealing openly to xenophobia and racial animus; and in which someone other than Mr. Trump had presided over an economy that began crumbling in the spring.

Take note that China is also buying up Australian and other gold mines –
Their current gold stock holding as ‘disclosed’ annually is nearing that of the USA, but I suspect their ‘undisclosed’ holdings are far higher, and note that their population are banned from taking gold out of China.
    Why – (my hypothesis) –
US gold stocks have been amortized (lent out multiple times as security) many times over and there is serious doubt that they exist in physical gold form, more likely in ‘paper’ gold.
When the worlds’ US$700 trillion derivatives market collapses, as it surly will, and likely triggered by the current depression caused by Covid 19, then the Chinese Yuan backed by gold will gradually usurp the US$ reserve currency.
I believe the only factor currently stopping China entering a full currency war with the US, is their US bond stock holding that has to be liquidated first – that is why they are buying up physical US assets to convert their bonds.
China has always planned decades ahead for the long game and is patient enough to wait it out.
May not happen in my lifetime but I suspect my son will see increasing Chinese influence in his everyday life –
    Be afraid.

  59. 63 | August 25, 2020 11:09 am

    @ eaglesoars:

Of course not. I do love it when the legal geniuses tell me that the complaint was valid because the judge “set it for trial.” No. It was set for a status conference, which is done at the time the complaint is filed and the judge is assigned, even before the other parties have appeared. The fraud NEVER served the complaint on then-candidate Trump or Jeffrey Epstein and dismissed it right before the election.

Also, supporting evidence included a declaration executed by “Tiffany Roe”. You cannot execute a declaration under an assumed name because you cannot swear under penalty of perjury that the statements are true. Such a declaration would have had the real name of the individual and would have been filed under seal. A fact which apparently Jane Doe’s retained “patent” attorney didn’t know or understand.

There is this black meme that goes around where black parents have to tell their kids beware of the cops. And that white people don’t have to do that.

My dad did tell me to always be polite to the cops but don’t trust them outright. That some cops were bad people.

We are both related to police and support the organization.

Show your hands. Say yes sir. Don’t freak out. Get the lawyer and don’t say much else.

My last police stop was probably 8 years ago. I was dressed like a rat and walking through an area of town where a robbery occurred. A single police officer stopped me. Maintained a social distance from me with his hand on his gun. I knew I was innocent and just talked to him until he let me go. I didn’t get handcuffed. I was polite and answered all his questions. But even if one is guilty at that point one should accept the arrest. Most likely nothing comes of it unless one is a really bad person. Just becomes a good bar story.

I’m against bail. It destroys the family of the bailee. Puts them in a deep hole. I had a friend arrested on many old unpaid traffic tickets and given a high bail. He had a mental issue in jail and needed meds and the system wouldn’t provide them or listen. Just wait til court. He wanted to sit in jail but the family was worried about his health and bailed him out. Loss of $5000 dollars for a family that at most every had $500 cash on hand. Not this jail but this jail system had a reputation for killing inmates through medical neglect.

    There are better alternatives.

I wonder when BLM is going to intimidate white liberals for their mail in ballots and lunch money? They were at a restaurant yesterday trying to do intimidating street theater.

    @ darkwords:

I don’t see much point in bail for unpaid traffic fines. You can’t be sentenced to jail for them, so why lock the person up beforehand?

Without some form of surety, though, a very large percentage of people arrested for serious crimes would simply disappear. These are the same ones who abscond from parole or probation supervision.

And GPS monitors are just about worthless, in practice.

    @ lobo91:
There is a place for bail. The system is large with a broad brush. I also became a felon for letting a California traffic ticket go unpaid.

I just stayed out of California. When talking to police friends they informed me that the severity of the crime versus the cost of re arrest and transport would determine if I was hauled back to CA. And that if I was even out of county it might not be worth it.

That was before the national records integration occurred. Now you’ll be flagged at the DMV in any state and unable to renew unless you make restitution.

And being the hypocrite I am I would arrest every single BLM protester and assign them bail. 🙂 I know the weight it can carry. If a celebrity volunteers to pay it I would make it the full amount.

This guy had kids in sports. Restricting his game attendance would have been effective leverage. He would have probably found a way to pay his tickets in two days.

Boring except for the 600 wicket total for the spinner.

You are going to have to wait for the Ashes to see some real action from this English side. The Aussies do bring out the mongrel in Brit teams.

The nominal 11 year Schwabb cycle is embedded in an 88 year Gleissberg cycle that is very well understood. The Gleissberg is likewise modulated by other longer term solar cycles at about 200 years + and 300 Years plus and overall a 2200 year cycle. The 300 year cycle with the embedded Gleissbery cycle can explain the past 300 year post Mini-Ice age warming event. Alas the good times can’t last forever and the world is headed back into the cold where food again becomes scarce and expensive.
