A Unix environment has similar protocols but it’s much more flexible and being able to execute software in real time instead of queing jobs is wonderful.
COBOL can live in either environment and it’s a very easy language to learn. C took me months to be proficient in and C++ – I retired before I got to be really good at that one.
Languages are easy. The screw ups come when the data is poorly managed/organized. Humongous flat files are almost always more efficiently processed as relational databases, period, full stop. Designing those databases is an art form.

Willow is still recovering from her surgery so to keep her morale up I have her favorite person in the whole world visit her every day even if we can’t go for walks. I’ll call her M. moving out of the city of Wichita into a suburban is kind of funny. I lived in my old house for 20 years, and then Wichita it’s self for over 30. And that whole time, I never attended a single city Council meeting.
Now that I’m in a very small town outside Wichita, I’ve become kind of a regular at the meetings. One of the council members joked that in a couple of years, I’d be there on the council. Who knows? Maybe he’s right.

A pregnant woman in her own home looking after 3 children was arrested by Victoria Police for incitement, for posting a Facebook post calling for a Freedom Day for a town in the Victoria State’s hinterland.

How the hell is this happening in 2020 in a Western democracy? Victoria is locked down and citizens can’t travel except for 60 minutes ‘exercise’ within 5 Km of their places of residence, and there is a 8PM-6AM total lockdown. They CAN’T ESCAPE this Fascist Marxist State!
Yet the citizens have been so terrorised by their State government and their fear is such that they think that if they refuse to comply then they will all die or sicked on the flu.

thanks very much for advising me to use Fidelity Investments. I’ve managed to save a few bucks and buy Tesla after the split (it sank but apparently there are some institutional investors who needed to dump some stock in order to conform to the parameters of their portfolios, e.g., Baillie Gifford).
I’m thinking about some other ‘long hold’ buys. I’m wondering about the Space Force. There are probably some industries that are golden when it comes to building that out, gov’t contracts and all, but I’m not at all knowledgeable about how to research that. I’m not doing anything more until after the election because – well, I don’t have to explain that. If Biden gets it……….
I have time to research because I have to save the money, so any thoughts are appreciated……..

Yes, actually, they were. We offered to hold a bake sale or something. Turned out they bought a lot of stuff ‘off the shelf’ and just modified it (e.g., shielded it for space radiation, etc.). One of the best out-of-the-blue phone calls I’ve ever had. Great fun with some very generous people.

‘So if they come out of Mungindi to shop in Moree or something like that they can’t then go into Queensland to have their medical issues. That is just cruel and wicked and brutal,’ she said.

A heavily pregnant mother was forced to wait 16 hours for emergency surgery in Sydney after being turned away at the Queensland border, before losing one of her unborn twin babies.
The mother, from Ballina in New South Wales which is 88km from the Queensland border, had twins who were just 24 weeks along and needed urgent care.
She wasn’t granted an exemption to cross the border for surgery at the Gold Coast University Hospital 125km away and instead had to wait for 16 hours in Lismore for a flight to Sydney.
One of the twins died four days later.

Meanwhile, a Queensland grandmother was forced to recover from brain surgery in a quarantine hotel.
Jayne Brown, 60, spent two weeks confined to a tiny hotel room in Brisbane following her recent return from Sydney, where renowned neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo removed two large tumours on her brain.
The grandmother-of-seven requested an exemption from hotel quarantine to self-isolate at home on the Sunshine Coast, but was rejected twice.
Not even a letter from Dr Teo himself could convince Queensland officials to change their mind and allow Ms Brown and her husband to isolate at their home.
Instead, she struggled through hotel confinement in agony unable to walk and limited access to pain relief.

The Queensland Premier proudly announced that she’d secured the landmark AFL Grand Final match on Tuesday alongside AFL CEO Gil McLachlan, who was granted an exemption to fly in to the Sunshine State for the announcement.
Annastacia Palaszczuk (The State Premier of Queensland) also let in 400 AFL officials to Queensland after announcing the Grand Final would be played at the Gabba.
All 400 will lockdown in the luxurious AFL “HUB” Mercure 5 Star hotel and golf course.
