The ubiquitous hotdog, a senior member of ‘on the go’ ‘fast food’. All sensible civilizations have some version of tube-meat. The hot dog is ours. Hot dogs come in a ton of variety from the Chicago dog that has everything you can think of it on it to the back yard grilled dog with some mustard. Today, I went for ‘Coney Island style hot dogs’ which only consists of: a hot dog, Greek Chili sauce, and onions on a bun…Simple. I drove over to Johnstown PA for Coney Island Lunch (est 1916) and then back to Altoona for Texas Hot Dog (est 1918). I have no idea why it’s called ‘Texas’. Over 200 years of ‘dogs between them! Neither place is fancy, hell…or even very nice inside. They are both clean, but well worn, lot’s of character to the buildings and tons of characters in them.
Today, in Battle: Hot Dog, I compared two western PA culinary traditions. Here, the chili is a sauce (no beans). It has Greek immigrant origins. They came through New York, tried some dogs, and said, “wait, Achilles! we have this meat sauce that would make this dog much better”. Anyone who has had it can tell it’s not really like chili. If you can get your hands on Skyline chili from Cincinnati, that’s a pretty good generic example but not as good as the local made stuff. Everyone who makes it has their own blend of spices which can range from hot to mild and even a touch of cinnamon. The name “Coney Island” when used in the store name denotes the style. For instance, the M&P Coney Island in New Castle PA has no relation to the Coney Island Lunch in Johnstown PA except the Greek style meat sauce.
First: Coney Island Lunch, Johnstown PA
It’s been in that same spot since day one and does breakfast. They cook dogs well into the early morning and are best enjoyed at 3am after a night at the many social clubs (Italian, Polish, Serbian, Croatian, und zo weite).
The dogs are cooked on two large flat tops 100 or so at a time. There was a line at 10am when i got there! The buns are also lined up to get a little toasted on the bottom. They move them so quickly that the buns never really spend more that a few minutes at rest and toasting. Their toasted buns are different as most places lightly steam them. The sauce is top notch, of course. The onions are shredded, which is essential. BUT, this place has one thing that none of the other places have…more on that later. The tube meat hot dogs themselves are as they should be, a little snap to them, essential spices, and a good chewiness to hold it all together.
Next: Texas Hot Dogs, Altoona PA (they have 2 locations!)
Texas Hot Dogs is a smaller operation, the flat top is 1/3 the size. They also do other things besides dogs like Coney Island Lunch, but really, ordering a cheeseburger in a Hot Dog joint just pisses everyone off and makes yinz look like a Jabroni. The line at Texas Dogs was out the door at 1150 this morning.
The buns are steamed, the chili sauce is also spot on, just a bit ‘richer’ than Coney Island Lunch, maybe a little more fat. Their Onions are not shredded as fine, but still shredded, this is key. The onions have to be shredded to really open them up. The hot dog (meat) itself more or less identical to Coney Island, I could not discern any appreciable differences there. This is a good thing.
The Result:
They both look and taste similar, Who is the winner? Coney Island Lunch by a dog’s whisker. I prefer the lightly toasted bun, BUT: It’s the onions. They are strong and shredded very fine. THIS is what makes a Coney Island dog better than all others. Their sauce is excellent, just like everyone else. Their onions are almost magically strong and you will smell of them for the next 12 hours. I can still smell them on my fingers! AND I WASHED MY HANDS!!! Glorious! I don’t know where they get these onions. I’ve shredded nearly every kind I can get…close…so close…but no.
Hope yinz enjoyed this.

Hardly generic. Empress Chili was the first, owned and operated by Greek immigrants. Cincinnati chili is unususal in that the meat is boiled, and the sauce includes cinnamon. Hot dogs with Cincinnati chili and cheese are referred to as cheese coneys.

We pretty much already knew that when we found out hospitals were given money (I think it is $1300) for every covid diagnosis. The hospital I ended up in (never again) quite deliberately liked about me having covid and then lied to medicare about treatment to the tune of $12k. Supposedly I was given 4-5 different IVs, etc. All I got was one dose of hydrocodeine and one dose of motrin. Then they kicked me out after 3 days because that’s all insurance would cover. And I still could not walk, even with a walker. They never told me about the blood in my urine.
I had E. Coli with a UTI. If my husband hadn’t got me to a proper doctor ASAP, I’d be dead. I probably should report the bastards to Medicare.

The Eastern side of Coromandel is now cut off with all cross Peninsular roads washed out. Two More Train Derailments in Texas and in South Carolina Raise More Concerns
https://redstate.com/nick-arama/2023/02/13/two-more-train-derailments-in-texas-and-in-south-carolina-raise-more-concerns-n703261
Now on Monday, two more train derailments are raising questions — one in Montgomery, Texas as well as another in Enoree, South Carolina.
The derailment in Montgomery (which is north of Houston) happened this morning around 7:30 a.m. and was caused by hitting a truck on the tracks. The truck driver was killed.
.
.
There was also a second derailment on Monday afternoon in Enoree, South Carolina. CSX Transportation is on the scene and it looks like fluid tankers from the pictures, but there’s not a lot of information yet. It’s not clear what caused the derailment there. You can see a video here.

Being a doggie type person Eagles you’ll love this story.
This morning at zero dark 30 a couple who breed Schnauzers were washed out but they were stranded by huge flood waters. A local pair of brothers who farm nearby were busy transporting neighbours through 1 metre+ fast flowing flood waters.
They loaded 15 Schnauzers into the bucket of a heavy front end loader. The breeder climbed into the bucket as well , to keep the dogs calm. His wife climbed into the cab with clothes and boxes of dog food and they drove through the flood. The dogs had no trouble and sat up and behaved magnificently. They are all well and have been put up in a cottage and barn.

An update on the balloon saga
https://hotair.com/john-s-2/2023/02/13/an-update-on-the-balloon-saga-n530584
So the good news is that we’ve probably a good chunk of the Chinese spy device, minus the solar panels that likely broke off when it hit the water. Now our experts will take a look and we’ll have a very good idea what this balloon was designed to capture. But as you’re also aware, the US has shot down 3 more balloons (or objects) in the past three days. Here’s a map showing where each one was found (2nd image below).

Alas there are 3 dead including that Rescue fireman who was swept away whilst evacuating a family who’s house was buried in an avalanche. The family survived. 250,000 without power and water. This is going to take up to a month to get them all reconnected. Helicopters are evacuating Gisbourne on East Cape. Locals are rescuing folks on jet skis off their roofs and centralising them in Gisbourne Hospital and churches and halls on higher ground. The military are pretty busy using Unimog trucks to move folks.
@ Aussie Infidel:
I have had to deal with only the aftermath of floods, I’ve never actually been in one as it was happening.
But the aftermath was horrid enough and I’ve told the story before. My family’s property was almost wiped out, water up to the 2nd floor. My parents owned a houseboat that my father had the good sense to move away from the river up the creek and secure with a Bermuda anchor configuration. That became the base of operations.
I shot more animals than I could count because the ecology was so effed up and they were just flat out dangerous. The worst was a wounded racoon and I
cried for 3 days. But it was either the racoon or my border collie, Tramp, and a racoon can kill a dog in minutes. My father was utterly disgusted with me. Not for killing the animal but for crying about it. And taking days to finally actually decide to kill the poor thing. You will note that my father made it my responsibility. Hard man. Good man.
Enough. Bed. Be safe.

Last Friday I was in the back yard and heard a dog screaming and guy yelling. Someone’s German shepherd had got out and it attacked my neighbor’s bulldog – while my neighbor was walking it.
Found out later that it wasn’t the first time the dog had attacked another dog. Now I’m concerned for the little kids.

There were two real customers and a store clerk inside the Ideal Mart with Sutton. Outside, there was one customer at the gas pump. Melody Sutton, Shawn’s wife, was in a parked car outside the store.
The suspect, Shawn Sutton, obtained the energy drink, then pulled a pair of women’s panties from around his neck to cover his face. Sutton went behind the counter and pointed a .45 caliber handgun at the head of the clerk. Sutton demanded all the money.
One of the customers produced his concealed firearm and intervened. The other customer went outside to retrieve his pistol from his vehicle and returned to help subdue Sutton. The third armed customer at the gas pumps came inside to assist as Sutton was attempting to leave. The first armed customer told the other two armed customers not to shoot Sutton, as Sutton had been disarmed.

A romantic story for Valentines day.
When I was young, about 5-6 years old I really liked the daughter of my mother’s brother. She was pretty, liked catching spiders and climbing trees.
My uncle lived about an hour away so we did not see each other often. Family gatherings and things.
Saw each other maybe twice a year.
As time passed and I became a teen I sort of saw my cousin in a different light. She was a really hot girl!!!!
But my cousin. So catching spiders and climbing trees was the extent of our friendship.
Anyway, time passed. Never saw her again as I moved away to college and never went to family gatherings. But kind of missed her.
Now you are all going to yell, SHE IS YOUR COUSIN!!!!!!!
And We abided by the rules! We did not live in Arkansas!
Many years later my mother told me a strange twist to this tragic story.
Oh well……
Got the Lodge 12 inch cast iron skillet today. Heavy sucker. $24. Happy with the purchase. Going to break out the bacon tomorrow to season it better. They sold an oil/bush kit next to it but I skipped that.

My father was afraid I HADN’T been switched in the hospital. They had to own me.
So I wasn’t exactly welcomed, all things considered. But the parents settled down and turned out to be the greatest blessing of my life. And I ended up far from good-looking but I wouldn’t make a train take a dirt road so there’s that.
And yes, they did love me w/o condition. But they didn’t always like me. Because I was a total PIA.
I miss them every day.

How come the guy win the hair and shades is holding onto the mag. I was there in 1980 and the war had been over for 2 weeks tops. Everyone bought their ‘Rhodesian FALs’ ( They were Belgian FALs but were locally called SLRs). Mein host Kevin (my former Training Officer at RNZIR and specifically 3rd Auckland Bn (Countess of Ranfurley’s Own) & Northland Regt) used to bring home his SLR every night and Sal his lovely wife packed a S&W .38 revolver loaded with ‘wad cutters’, just in case, as there were loads of revenge hits going down all over, on BOTH sides. Kevin was Recon Pl commander in Rhodesian African Rifles, but used to freelance on invitation to RLI (Rhodesian Light Infantry) all white unit, who were protecting the capital at night in company strength. There was a massive shit-storm one night that sounded like WWIII. Some RLI got dressed in rebel uniforms and carried AK47 (that were laying around all over), fired 4 RPGs through the outer wall of a covert ZANLA (one of the rebel groups) and then hosed the whole place down and then threw grenades inside to boot. The plan was that the rest of RLI would arrive on the scene and kill anyone left alive and then set the whole place on fire. Alas a few ZANLA escaped over the back wall and when RLI turned up to clean up they didn’t know who might be watching from the shadows. Some of the ZANLA who had escaped ran out of the shadows and into RLI’s arms claiming that ZIPRA (the alternative rebel group) had just killed all of their mates and blown up their ammunition stores. They threw themselves on RLI and begged them to save them from ZIPRA. RLI then switched to Plan ‘B’ and became the ‘saviours’ of ZANLA!
Kevin rolled in home about 2300 smelling like WWIII, cleaned his SLR and had a shower threw his clothes into the wash and we all went to sleep. There was a LOT of that sort of shit going down and everyone was armed to the teeth and quite jumpy.

On topic for once as regard to skillets.
You know the bags of oven fries you buy? depending on the brand and price about a quarter to half the bag is bits and pieces and skinny things. Not worth oven baking, they dry up and burn.
However the rejected fry parts are yummy!
Let them thaw out, chop them in to pieces no bigger than 6.35mm square ( There I already lost you lot! OK 1/4 inch )
Place in skillet with water, sorry can’t tell you how much, a professional like me cooks by feel. Add a splash of peanut oil and heat on low on stove top.
Depending how low you heat skillet it can take a while. In the mean time finely chop an onion.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, If you added enough water and had the heat high enough by the time water evaporates you have cooked potato bits coated in oil. Crank up the heat and add the onion.
Sizzle until browned to your liking.

One thing I crave is ” Bubble and squeak ” The ultimate left overs dish.
Easy to make if you are a family of six or more and have a traditional English Sunday lunch.
For me I have to artificially create the left overs to make it.
Thinking about this, if I buy a bag of coleslaw mix I have cabbage. A few frozen brussels sprouts, a couple spoon full of packet mash, half a can of carrots, some chopped bacon and so one.
But kind of crazy making a meal that is traditionally left overs by using non left over ingredients!
The English eat Bangers and mash. Why the name bangers?
Same reason bubble and squeak is called that. The sound the food makes when cooking.

99 Balloons
Versions: #1#2#3#4#5#6
[Verse 1]
If you have some time to spare
I will sing a song for you
About 99 balloons
On their way to the horizon
If you’re thinking about me right now
I will sing a song for you
About 99 balloons
And the consequences of innocent actions1
[Verse 2]
99 balloons
On their way to the horizon
Were mistaken for alien invaders
So a general
Sent a fighter squadron after them
To sound the alert if that were true
But all there was on the horizon
Were 99 balloons
[Verse 3]
99 fighter pilots
Each of them a great warrior
Took themselves for Captain Kirk
And started massive fireworks
The neighbors didn’t understand what was going on
And felt personally offended
But all they shot at on the horizon
Were 99 balloons
[Verse 4]
99 secretaries of war
With matches and cans of gasoline
Took themselves for clever
With dollar signs in their eyes
Called for war, lusting for power
Boy, who’d have thought
It would ever come to this
Because of 99 balloons?
[Bridge]
Because of 99 balloons
99 balloons!
[Verse 5]
99 years of war
Left no place for winners
There are no secretaries of war anymore
Nor any fighter pilots
As I’m making my rounds
And see the world burned to the ground
I found a balloon
And set it off, thinking of you

It looks like the braking system on the train was an air brake system, not electronic. So it was a one mile long slinky. Or 2 miles, not sure.
news from the UK
The National Grid is launching a new demand flexibility service test tonight, where thousands of households will be asked to turn off their energy-guzzling appliances to help balance the UK’s electricity system, Express.co.uk was told. The scheme was launched late last year amid warnings from the National Grid that they may be forced to impose three hour blackouts if gas and electricity supplies were tight during the winter. To prevent such a nightmare scenario, the company’s Electricity Systems Operator rolled out this service, where eligible households will be asked to reduce their energy usage during peak hours of the day.

Hey CW, did you know there’s something called The Pittsburgh Salad? Me neither.
Gotta hand it to the City of Bridges, they know how to up the salad game. They looked at croutons and said, “it’s good, but we can do better!” And thus, the Pittsburgh Salad was born, trading the bread cubes for French fries, and spreading joy to the world. The salad is as crisp, crunchy, and refreshing as ever, and quite filling thanks to the grilled meat on top, and of course a drizzle of ranch dressing brings some zest to the dish. Pittsburgh Salad does the Steel City proud and your tastebuds too!
48 oven fries, frozen
lettuce, to taste, roughly chopped
grape tomatoes, to taste
chicken breast or steak, to taste, grilled
cheddar and mozzarella cheese blend, to taste, shredded
ranch dressing, to taste
Step 1 –
Cook the fries according to the package directions.
Step 2 –
In a large shallow bowl, arrange the lettuce, the tomatoes, and the grilled meat.
Step 3 –
Let the fries cool until they are warm but not extremely hot.
Step 4 –
Spread the fries over the assembled salad.
Step 5 –
Sprinkle the salad with the cheese and drizzle it with the ranch.
Step 6 –
Serve.

It was coming out of both ends. He’d also dislocated the fingers of his right land last week holding onto a large Labrador who was attempting to get out for a walk. Got a text message today from the owner saying that if we don’t cease and desist, he will be contacting his lawyer. His reasoning is that he claims we agreed to an amount, which we did not, and that he had promised to pay us by three weeks from last Monday, which he did not.
We’ll see where this goes.

I think I may do a series of posts about how the USA which sent men to the Moon ( for no real reason except they could ) Gets basic day to day shit wrong.
First fascinating thing that the USA does that is stupid.
All those parking permits and registration sticky things on the DRIVER side of the windscreen.
Partially obscuring driver vision to the left.
The rest of the civilised world sticks all that shit on the passenger side. Where it can easily be seen by any law enforcement and parking enforces from the sidewalk. And it does not obscure driver vision.
But, yeah shit we got to the Moon!
This is a fascinating article.

I like cats. Well I have no choice really they invaded my apartment.
If you google how many words cats understand it varies, 20 to 50 or so.
Do they respond to any of these words?
Absolutely not unless they want to!
So I do not believe ANY research as to how many words a cat understands is valid.
Was on the phone to a friend last night on speaker phone and something either I said or friend said sent two of them nuts!
@ Possum:
To elaborate on this, if I am talking on the phone without speaker they think I am talking to them. Understandably so.
If on speaker they can also hear the other party and understand I am not talking to them.
Last night one of us must have said a trigger word!
As to cats and hearing. At the moment three cats are in another room all curled up asleep ( cats do not sleep, they are on full alert all the time ) and none of them are in a position to see into the bedroom where I am on laptop.
Even if I do not turn any lights off and sneeky slither into bed as quiet as a mouse they all wake up and jump on the bed with me!
