The Ashes, The US Open, My Dad’s Father’s day golf outing 2023 open

Filed under Open thread, Sports at June 14th, 2023 - 10:00 pm

Firmly ensconced in Papap Coldwarrior’s Garagemahal for the Father’s Day golf outing on Saturday. My first practice round will already be underway at 5am after this posts. The Competition, play, and steaks will be Saturday. I’ll let yins know the result.

The US Open starts Thursday AM in CA at the Los Angeles C.C. (that’s Country Club for yinz non golfers, n’at). The LACC has never hosted a major. hell, they never host anything. DO they deserve The Open? No. They don’t. This was a bullshit move by the USGA. CC’s (Country Clubs) worth their salt work to get the Open…Oakmont, Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, Bethpage, Shinnecock, Oakmont…yeah, I said Oakmont twice because it is the nastiest, hardest, most unforgiving course in the world. And that is what the Open is. I hope the LACC doesn’t fail like what happened at the unprepared 2017 Open (learn how to cut the grass and attend to the patrons).

And now THIS: The Ashes 2023. The Aussies just dismantled the Indians in test cricket in England for the World Test Championship. No mean feat! Now the Aussies stay in England to continue The Ashes Series. The Aussies hold the Ashes and England must win outright over the summer. The last wickets will be at the end of July at The Oval. It’s a brutal best of 5 Test. If yinz get a chance to look at it, DO! It starts Saturday.

This is an Open.

i don’t think that England’s middle order can handle the Aussie bowlers.

the Aussies retain the Ashes 4/5.

Apologies for going off topic so soon, but I don’t want to forget this

USF leaders revoke victory of DeSantis supporter who won student president election

    https://www.thecollegefix.com/usf-leaders-revoke-victory-of-desantis-supporter-who-won-student-president-election/

Student and administrative leaders at the University of South Florida recently rescinded the results of a student body president election, revoking the victory of a conservative-leaning ticket and handing the win to the runners up, who ran a more liberal-minded campaign.

This brings back memories. A year after I got booted from the public school system in Mt Lebanon, the student body elected a kid by the name of Ricky Watts as president of the student council.

The admin nullified the vote and tried to force another election. Why?

Ricky was the son of Alan Watts. (His older brother, Mark, was in my class).

Alan Watts was a ‘hippie’ philosopher. He wrote books, the one I actually read is The Way of Zen.

So the son of a San Fran hippie author gets elected, the admin tries to kill it and guess what happened next?

The entire student body went on strike.

IIRC, Alan dropped dead at his home in a suburb of San Fran from a massive heart attack.

    Yup.

Given the Aussie’s current form and the depth of available talent, especially with the ball I think 4/1 is a fair assessment of how the Ashes will go. I am only throwing that 1 out there to cover a weather related glitch and a Duckworth calculation early on in the 5 day Test match!

Give the Aussies just the faintest whiff and they will be there immediately tearing your throat out!

    🙂

It was not immediately clear if the hackers responsible for breaching the federal agencies were a Russian-speaking ransomware group that has claimed credit for numerous other victims in the hacking campaign.

Life in a third world country.

Hottest day so far this year in Houston.

Advisory states drink plenty of water.

11:33am got an email and checked the water, yep none.

    Good Morning Residents ,

This email is to inform you that there is no Hot Water or Cold Water due to the Center Point Energy workers braking our pipe lines of water. We do not know exactly when they will be done working on fixing it back please be patient with us. If you have any questions please contact us at xxx-xxx-

Hey no worries, cats have water, I have beer and no need for a shower as I ain’t going anywhere. So life is good!

2:10pm fucking power went off. Now I am going to be stinky!!!!!!

My home Internet is a $30 Visible phone which is on a charger 24/7 with an unlimited data plan and unlimited hotspot data plan tethered to a laptop so I have about 4 hours before life as I know it finally ends.

Lunch is probably going to be a can of sardines and a tomato. Oh, and more beer.

Thanks for the warning. As I have a history of lacerated fingers whilst opening cans of sardines then lunch will be just two tomatoes.

But they look so yummy, Wild Planet, Sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Lemon and lightly smoked. Sustainably caught in the North Pacific.

    I am tempted….

An hour translated to Indian ( Not the Red shooty arrows at cowboys but the curry eating ones ) means we got your rent payment, fuck the fact you have no water.

Rep Jim Jordan heads up something called the weaponization committee. An IRS agent used an alias to go to a woman’s home to tell her the estate she was the fiduciary of owed money and if she didn’t pay it blah blah blah. She called her attorney who told the agent to leave, the agent told the attorney to fuck off and everybody called the cops. The cops investigated, found the agent and his supervisor, his supervisor said no taxes were due, blah blah blah.

Here is the letter the Weaponization Committee sent to the IRS.

    Happy Fathers Day drive-by post.
I found this collection of NorK propaganda paintings (1950-1970) and sent them to a friend:
    https://rarehistoricalphotos.com/north-korea-anti-american-propaganda-pictures/

    Here is his response.

I was over in Korea for an exercise in 1994, and was able to go on a tour of the DMZ and Panmunjom.

    It was really crazy.

The conference room, where the ceasefire negotiations happened, was built straddling the border with North Korea.
We went in that building and were able to walk to the North Korean end.

So, I can truthfully say I was in North Korea (for about 30 seconds).

Obviously, they wouldn’t let us go outside the building on the North Korean side.

The other cool part of that tour was seeing “Freedom Bridge”, where prisoners are exchanged.

When I was in college in Ohio, the family I lived with had a good friend who was the radioman on the USS Pueblo. He spent about 12 months as a prisoner of the North Koreans.

He walked homeward over that bridge and I was able to get some photos of the bridge for him. He never thought he’d see that place again.

The North Koreans brought the crew to the bridge and told them to walk South. They were instructed to walk slowly, not to run.

He said it took every fiber of his strength to not break into a run. The whole time, he thought it was going to be a cruel NK trick and that they were going to machine gun them in the back when they got halfway across, claiming they were trying to escape.

The North Koreans were trying to create propaganda photos, boasting of how well the “capitalist bandit pirates” were being treated.
The crew knew they didn’t want to be used for propaganda purposes, so they did things like flipping off the camera.

The North Koreans asked what that gesture was and they said it was an old Hawaiian/Navy good luck greeting, so the Americans would know the photos were legit.

When the NKs found out and embarrassed in front of the world, the crew got the shit beat out of them and bones broken.

the Aussies retain the Ashes 4/5.

The First Ashes Test is what is called lyrically ‘balanced’ with the ‘Aussies with a sniff’ between showers and the two openers for England dismissed cheaply on day 3. If the Brits can get anywhere north of 300 on day #4 then they may be in with a chance.

The Aussie tail-enders were all out cheaply on day #3 between rain spells and were just behind the 398 for 8 declared for the Brit’s first Innings. The loss of those two Brit openers in England’s second innings moved the needle towards the Aussies, just a smidgen. If the bloody rain puts in a showing on Day #4 then we may be looking at a Duckworth calculation and that’d be a travesty as this game could still go either way and doing ‘Duckworth maths’ would be disappointing.

I’m still optimistic about the rain staying away on Day #4 and the Aussie ‘quickies’ getting amongst the English middle order batsmen. Both teams ‘tail-enders’ seem to be vulnerable, but if Oz can get past the Brit openers on day #4 then I think that the Aussie ‘quickies’ will be merciless. I still can’t see the Brits lasting for a full day with the openers already gone for a pittance. Unless the Brit top order bats can ‘dig in’ and put in a showing then I think that the Aussies will maintain their momentum. With just two days to go this could go either way but for me I think that the Aussies now have a sniff of victory and you know how ruthless they can be.

I’m guessing that the Aussies will snatch this one by Day #5 or if the Brits can dig in and play out the clock then they might get away with a drawn match. I really REALLY don’t want the ‘Duckworth calculations’ to intervene as this match has had some classic chops and changes of initiative and it’s be sad to have a bunch of ‘Duckworth maths’ to intervene and force a draw. Fingers crossed for NO MORE RAIN and the Aussie ‘Quicks’ to be fed raw steak and let loose on the Brit first order bats. If that transpires then there will be blood all over the British press as their middle order and tail-enders will be swept away by those ruthless Aussie quickies.

    🙂

You know that Dodgers baseball game that held that pre-game pride thing that people protested? The Dodgers played the SF Giants and they lost 7-3. Two things John Frederick* brought up this morning. When the Dodgers players came out on the field, 17 of the 18 were wearing a crucifix in some form. AND – Dodger pitching/batting was incoherent. Swinging at the wrong pitches, throwing the wrong pitch given the on-base configuration.

The Dodgers’ players threw the game?

But not to worry, she’s not the type to leave w/o having somewhere to go, which in her case means another man. It’s the only way for Russians to crack a smile. They make fun of the tragedy in their lives and also make fun of themselves. The Australian TGA states you can find reputable information about Covid-19 vaccines on their ‘Is it true’ section of the website. It is worth a look. In answer to the question ‘Can COVID-19 vaccines alter my DNA?’ the TGA is clear: ‘No, COVID-19 vaccines do not alter your DNA.’

They explain, ‘mRNA vaccines use a synthetic genetic code called RNA to give our cells instructions about how to make the coronavirus’ unique spike protein. When our body has made the protein encoded by the mRNA vaccine, it then recognises the spike protein as being foreign and launches an immune response against it. The RNA from the vaccine does not change or interact with our DNA in any way.’

Phew. Well, that’s ok then, right?

Possible routes for mRNA to convert to DNA (including a process known as reverse transcription) were discounted. Until the publication of an annoying little paper in 2022 by Alden et al, an in vitro study involving human liver cells which showed Pfizer’s mRNA was expressed as DNA within six hours.

At the time, this was assumed due to reverse transcription of the mRNA. However, in light of McKernan’s discovery, there’s a whole new possibility to consider. What if the vaccines already contained DNA? Then arguments about whether the mRNA could reverse transcribe into DNA become irrelevant.

Let’s return to McKernan and take a closer look at what he found. In addition to the expected mRNA, he also found mRNA fragments, other pieces of RNA, and two forms of DNA: linearised and circular. The significance of the circular – or plasmid – DNA is important. The plasmid DNA is the ‘complete recipe’ used to program bacterial cells to mass produce the mRNA. This DNA should not be there. Further investigation by McKernan showed the plasmid DNA contained in the vaccines was indeed viable and capable of transformation in bacterial cells.

So, the Pfizer and Moderna vials of bivalent vaccine that McKernan tested were contaminated with DNA. DNA encoding the spike gene and potentially capable of inserting into the genome of an organism.

I don’t think ‘contaminated’ is the word they want. I think ‘spiked’ is more like it.

    Lee Smith expounds

The Ugly History of the DOJ Hatchet-Man Tasked to Target Trump

Former US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell Explains How Jack Smith Nearly Rekindled Conflict in the Balkans to Get Trump

    [Grennel speaking]

This is a long, complicated history in the Balkans, the war, the bombing that started in 1989. And there are lots of different views. There’s lots of war crimes that people were accused of, and there were lots of investigations of those war crimes. I spent eight years at the UN and the UN launched investigations of what had happened. Lots of charges of war crimes on both sides. And this international court was established to work through the details. We spent decades, millions of US taxpayer dollars on prosecutors looking at details, interviewing witnesses, and when the prosecutor at the Hague before Jack Smith resigned he said, I’ve investigated for years, I’ve spent millions of dollars and there’s nothing here. No one will be indicted.

That’s a really important point — the prosecutor before Jack Smith had been there for a long time had looked at everything and said there’s nothing to do now. Think about this: an international court investigating for 15 or 20 years and not being able to produce any type of indictment is a serious situation.
    .
    .
[brief discussions about how both sides had agreed to get rid of the ICC/Hague where Jack Smith was now the prosecutor]
    .
    .
As Hashim Thaci, the president of Kosovo was on his way making plans to come to Washington DC to meet me at the White House to do final negotiations — and if we concluded the negotiations, to meet with President Trump to sign it — he was indicted by the court. Jack Smith indicted the president of Kosovo on his way to negotiate to get rid of Jack Smith’s job at the Hague.
    .
    .
There was this idea long ago that the charges against Thaci were about trafficking human organs on the battlefield. But when they put forward the indictment, none of that was there. There were no dates. There are no specifics. And here’s the clincher, some of the witnesses to that indictment have now come forward and said, I only said what I said because the person interviewing me claimed to be the United States, CIA, and they had evidence and wanted me to say this. That person now has been proven to not be a CIA person. Whoever that person was lied to the witnesses. The witnesses have come forward to say I was lied to, I thought I was working with the CIA. Did Jack Smith know about this? Did he put up these phony CIA people to jam through this.

keep reading, it’s fascinating. Jack Smith also got a former governor of Virginia convicted for taking bribes

The trip to the Titanic wreck site, which lies 12,500 feet beneath the surface, and back typically takes a total of eight hours to complete, the outlet continued.

Since Durham is testifying on Capitol Hill tomorrow, will we finally find out why he didn’t interview:

    – James Comey, FBI Director
    – Andrew McCabe, former acting FBI Director
    – Kevin Clinesmith, the FBI lawyer who authored a fake email to continue surveillance of the Trump campaign
    – Glenn Simpson, paid by the Clinton campaign to hire Christopher Steele
    – Peter Strzok and Bill Priestap, FBI agents intimately involved in the Russia Hoax

Durham rightly concluded the FBI was so blinded by its political vendetta against Trump that they accepted “seriously flawed information” and abandoned their “own principles regarding objectivity and integrity.”

    https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politics/catherinesalgado/2023/06/19/exclusive-previous-target-of-dojs-trump-legal-hit-squad-alleges-witness-payoff-scheme-n1704481

Justice Department Special Counsel Jack Smith is overseeing the current investigation into and indictment of Donald Trump. But as USA Today reported, Smith “built [his] reputation” in his previous role overseeing the prosecution of former Rep. Rick Renzi (R-Ariz.). And according to Renzi himself, in exclusive comments to PJ Media, there’s evidence tying Smith to illegal wiretaps, jury influencing, payoffs for false testimony, and other highly questionable behavior. The newly published allegations led Donald Trump to call Smith “deranged.”

Renzi was convicted on bribery and extortion charges, to which he pleaded “not guilty,” and was later given a full presidential pardon by Trump. While a 2019 complaint and request for investigation filed on Renzi’s behalf by respected legal firm Mayer Brown claim to provide evidence of prosecutorial misconduct, current Trump prosecutors Jack Smith and David Harbach were more directly implicated in the misconduct allegations—including a reported government payoff offer—than previously revealed.

The alleged prosecutorial misconduct of Smith and his team, both from the DOJ and FBI, included illegal wiretaps, concealment of exculpatory evidence and impeachment evidence, destruction of evidence, and introduction of false testimony before and during Renzi’s trial. “The prosecutorial misconduct of Jack Smith and his lead prosecutor in my case, David Harbach, is what led to the presidential pardon” Trump gave him, the former congressman told PJ Media. He explained how he believes Smith and Harbach “tainted” his jury pool while working to exclude pro-life jurors since Renzi is a pro-life father of twelve.

But Renzi had an even more explosive accusation to share, based on information his lawyers told him. Renzi said that “what Jack Smith and Harbach are known for is that they’ll provide some sort of a secret incentive, some sort of a pay-off scheme… to cooperating witnesses in order to get them not just to flip on the defendant, but also to spin a tale.”

    WHAT??!!

Not “Rational” US Officials Block Rescue Mission of Titanic Tourists

According to the Telegraph, the team from deepwater specialists Magellan Limited has not received approval for take-off.
He added Magellan’s remotely operated vehicle was unique in that it was likely the only asset available to have a winch capable of dragging submersibles from the depths of the ocean, while it can also detect signals and send them above the surface.

Mr Hunchak said the desperate situation was “painful” to him as he described Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a Frenchman reported to be among those on the submersible, as a “personal mentor”.

He told the Telegraph: “We have British, French and US citizens on board and every minute here counts. This is not a rational decision, this is the only asset we have with a winch, and the guys are experts in this area.

“Why not run both vessels? The more help we can get, the better, and denying us means you are giving up on every option you have to save lives.”

    “These are irreplaceable human beings.”

Our Walmart has about 6 charging stations. They built them about 3 years ago.

Heads up. I don’t know what’s going on here but my gut tells me it’s important.

    https://twitter.com/greg_price11/status/1671265971741360131

NEW: This photo is from today at Jared Bossly’s farm in Brown County, South Dakota.

Surveyors from Summit Carbon Solutions, currently filing an eminent domain lawsuits against him and 80 other landowners in the state for a carbon capture pipeline, showed up to his property with a massive drilling rig that they hauled into the middle of his crops.

Keep in mind that the lawsuit is still pending and they don’t even have a permit to build the pipeline yet but say that this is granted under their right to “survey.”

Is @KristiNoem doing anything to protect private property rights? Nope. The company building the pipeline was a platinum sponsor of her inauguration back in January!

    and…

    https://twitter.com/RepJonHansen/status/1671239300875431938

Update on the carbon sequestration pipeline and the use of eminent domain by private corporations in South Dakota: These photos, taken today, show Summit Carbon Solutions, accompanied by law enforcement, “surveying” land on farm ground without the farmer’s permission (does this looks like a “survey” to you?). The landowner feels like “a prisoner on his own land.” Look at how they trample all over the the farmer’s crops with complete disregard. This is not freedom.
    .
    .
This is the current scene on private property in South Dakota: an out-of-state, for-profit corporation with armed patrol intruding on property without the landowner’s consent to lay a carbon sequestration pipeline that the landowner doesn’t want. This is not freedom.

ARMED PATROL?? [there is a pic]

    https://www.parabellum.news/p/when-green-energy-comes-for-your

The Bossly family are just one of over 80 South Dakota landowners facing eminent domain lawsuits Summit filed in late April.

These 80+ properties fall in the path of a planned 2,000-mile carbon capture pipeline the company plans to build. The planned project traverses five states and aims to capture carbon dioxide from ethanol plants in Iowa and sequester it underground in North Dakota.

The Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states “nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.” This process of eminent domain was upheld by the Supreme Court as constitutional in the landmark case of Kelo v. New London. The process is highly controversial and often criticized by advocates for civil liberties on the left and right.

In South Dakota, there is no clear process laid out by which an entity is granted the power of eminent domain. Historically, once a project is approved or permitted by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), it assumes the power of eminent domain. But under the PUC’s Pipeline Sitting Guide, pipelines are designated as common carriers, which deflects the decisions to the circuit court system.

And despite the fact that the pipeline has not yet been permitted, SCS is taking advantage of South Dakota’s lack of private property protections and using it against landowners like Jared Bossly.

As he explained to me, the construction of a pipeline on his property would likely ruin the future success of his farm. The route would force them to bulldoze many of the trees he has planted, jeopardizing the safety of his cows by removing the windbreaks used to protect them. He also said that the topsoil is only about a foot deep, which means moving it around will likely prevent crops from growing there again.

Many landowners being taken to court are just like him- small town farmers whose farms have been in their family for generations.

    The Green Energy Scam

A few years ago, one of the biggest stories in the country centered around the Standing Rock Sioux tribe’s protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline, which today carries over 750,000 barrels of oil per day from North Dakota to Illinois.

Despite not crossing through tribal lands and not using eminent domain to build it, the construction of the pipeline led to mass protests, many of which turned violent, as well as wall-to-wall media coverage.

Politicians like Bernie Sanders spoke out passionately against it, celebrities such as Mark Ruffalo, Shailene Woodley, and Jesse Jackson traveled to the protests in North Dakota and it even led to the leader of the Standing Rock Sioux getting an audience before the UN Human Rights Council.

Well unlike the Standing Rock Sioux, South Dakota landowners are actually facing property loss and it’s for a product that brings almost zero public benefits.

Based in Iowa, SCS has been able to turn carbon capture into profitable enterprise due to massive investments from venture capital firms such as TPG Rise Climate Fund and Tiger Investment Partners. They also benefit from massive subsidies from the federal government. The Inflation Reduction Act, signed into law by President Joe Biden last year, massively expanded tax credits for carbon capture worth up to $210 billion.

Titan submersible failure analysis assumptions & possibilities posted aprrox. 3pm EST.

Oceangate Expedition lost communication with its deep diving 5-person submarine on June 18th 2023 while transiting submerged to the Titanic wreck site. 5 people onboard were: Stockton Rush, PH Nargeolet, Shahzada Dawood, Suleman Dawood, and Hamish Harding.
In this video I describe the incident in detail. I review the construction, design and system onboard the Titan. I catalog my concerns about the design and operation of this submarine. This video is my personal opinion with the limited information available to me at the time of this recording. A follow up video will be published when more facts from the investigation surface.
Titan is a Cyclops-class manned submersible designed to take five people to depths of 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) for site survey and inspection, research and data collection, film and media production, and deep sea testing of hardware and software. Through the innovative use of modern materials, Titan is lighter in weight and more cost efficient to mobilize than any other deep diving submersible. A combination of ground-breaking engineering and off-the-shelf technology gives Titan a unique advantage over other deep diving subs; the proprietary Real Time Hull Health Monitoring (RTM) systems provides an unparalleled safety feature that assesses the integrity of the hull throughout every dive. The use off-the-shelf components helped to streamline the construction, and makes it simple to operate and replace parts in the field.
Paired with a patented, integrated launch and recovery platform, Titan is easy to operate in varying sea states using a local appropriately sized ship for the project. In coastal waters this means we do not need a large support ship with a crane or A-frame.
Sourced from Oceangate.com and Teledyne interviews with the CEO Stockton Rush. This video is intended to provide my opinion on this event with the information available to me at the time of recording.

Titanic submarine search debris ‘CONFIRMED’ to be from missing OceanGate sub

Rescue expert and friend of the men trapped on the sub, David Mearns, has told Sky News he received a WhatsApp from someone “directly connected” to the ships involved in the search, who told him “a landing frame and rear cover from the submersible” was recovered.

He said: “There is a WhatsApp group between ourselves and the explorers club, that we have all been connected to as soon as this happened, and our President is directly connected to the ships that are out there, and the message they are telling me ‘if you are talking about debris, it was a landing frame and rear cover from the submersible’.”

He added: “So again, this is a very unconventional submarine, that rear cover is that pointy end of it, and the landing frame is the little frame that it seems to sit on, and that is how its docked into the landing bit, so that confirms it’s the submersible.”

Looks as if the two Titanium rings and half pressure domes off each end of the pressure vessel were fairly close to each other. Sounds as if it was the highly experimental 5″ thick Carbon Fibre wound layered pressure tube that failed catastrophically. Because the two ends of the pressure vessel were reasonably close to each other it would seem to suggest that they imploded close to maximum depth near the bottom. So much for the continuously monitored system that kept an overwatch on the integrity of the 5″ thick carbon fibre hull. Comms were lost at 3,300 metres so one has to assume that it imploded sometime deeper than that, or less than half a mile above the bottom. The dive 2 years ago, a passenger said that the hull was very noisy as the pressure increased. They didn’t even use their batteries on the decent to save power. Just Glo-sticks for light. Seated in a steel grill flooring in the dark listening to the hull making creaking and popping noises. The Titanic depth was right on the maximum pressure limit 4,000 metres.

At least it was very fast. Mere milliseconds, to implode with atmosphere heating up to well over 1,000C+ . As human nerve impulses travel at a mere 350 MPH the brains of the passengers would not have been ready to input the electrical impulses as they would have already been mush. They never even knew that they were already dead!

Similar thing happened to the Air NZ DC-10 passengers when they hit the mountain in Antarctica, back in the day. The shock wave travelled so fast from the floor through the passengers legs and bodies into their heads that their brains were totally turned to mush long (relatively in milliseconds) before the pain nerve sensors had time to transmit to their brains. There were no brains left to register pain. Their death was totally painless, like turning off a light! Same with this implosion!

Yeah, it looks to me like they lost power, otherwise they could have blown the ballast. I don’t THINK they could have done that mechanically (i.e., no electricity). They had a little time to know they were fucked, tho.

I picked this up from a reddit thread

    https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/14gcjxq/with_news_of_the_titan_experiencing_a/

The CEO of the company had this sub built using carbon fiber wrapped around a mandrel, a methodology used for pressure vessels. The problem is that this kind of design resists pressure from the inside because carbon fiber is strong in tension, not compression. It is not proven for resisting pressure from the outside trying to crush it, and the material theory governing fiber-wound vessels suggests that it would fail, but he “broke the rules” in the name of innovation. He was widely criticized by the submarine community for this, but he forged ahead. See James Cameron explain this.
Carbon fiber and epoxy composite systems do not fail gradually; when they fail, they snap or shatter because they tend to be very stiff and brittle, and failure happens by delamination, where the layers of epoxy and fiber separate, since they have different stress-strain curves under extremely high loads. Upon delamination, carbon fiber composites lose all their strength. Here is a hydraulic press crushing a carbon fiber ring to failure vs. a titanium ring. That moment you hear a snap is when it fails, but unlike a slow moving hydraulic press that needs to keep moving to do more damage, the deep sea would have continued to squish the thing all the way in upon the first moment of failure with unrelenting speed.
At the depths they had descended to, the pressure on the hull would have been around 2,800 PSI (pounds per square inch), nearly a ton and a half per square inch. For comparison, the atmosphere is at about 15 PSI.
When that hull failed, it likely crushed inward faster than the speed of sound in air. Either that, or the first crack that formed let in a thin jet of water comparable to that of a water jet cutter that sliced whoever and whatever was near it into pieces.
Basically a catastrophic implosion means they likely didn’t even have time to react in any substantive way to the first signs of failure before they were doomed. At best they tried to release the ballast to return to the surface and died very shortly after. At worst, they instantaneously became salty meat paste at supersonic speed.

Here is a great video explaining the massive stack of stupid decisions by the company that would make any experienced submariner wince:

To qualify my remarks with an asterisk and a footnote, I should have said that the kind of carbon fiber wound vessel they used could probably stand a round or two of that kind of compressive loading, but each time they did a cycle of extreme pressure followed by depressurization probably formed micro-cracks throughout the material that were very difficult if not impossible to detect. These micro-cracks are where the fiber separates from the epoxy matrix gluing it together because the stress-strain curves for epoxy and carbon fiber differ substantially at high loads, causing them to separate from each other even if they were bonded together when assembled and cured during manufacturing.

Basically, that’s the expected mode of material fatigue in fiber reinforced composites. We now know what the limit of their design is: three or four rounds, if I remember correctly. Too bad it cost five lives to learn this. They could have tested this and found out beforehand, but the CEO’s attitude could be characterized as “Safety Last”, so no such cyclical testing was done.

Steel, if made thick enough, and if loaded well within the elastic deformation limit for its shape, is extremely resistant to material fatigue. Carbon fiber is not. Composites are not strong against this kind of wear, which is why wind turbine blades (which are made using fiberglass or carbon fiber bonded with epoxy) eventually wear out from the flexing, which causes the fibers to delaminate from the epoxy over time.

    um………..

Barack Obama has used a stolen social security number most of his adult life. The one he uses was issued on March 28, 1977 to someone living in Connecticut, born in 1890 and is now long deceased. Obama was fifteen years old that day, living in Hawaii and playing on the junior varsity basketball team at Punahou
    .
    .
Obama is a felon — plain and simple. He should have a Hawaiian social security number like his half-sister, Maya, starting with the numbers 575 or 576. He claimed he worked at Baskin-Robbins when he was fifteen. It would have required a social security number. Instead, Obama has a number starting with 042, used for the exclusive use of CT residents, and which appeared on his 2009 tax return while he was president. Someone forgot to remove the number.

From 1936 until June 2011 social security numbers were assigned by the address on the SS-5 form used to apply for one. Under Obama, the law was changed to randomize where the applicant was living when he or she applied. Imagine that.

Now that they’ve destroyed their farmers, they are in the process of destroying the housing market

It’s not just farms–Dutch government now will determine who you can sell your home to

The new Housing Act will give municipalities the power to force someone selling their home to sell to people with a lower or middle income. A parliamentary majority supports Minister Hugo de Jonge’s (Public Housing) bill, AD reports.

The idea behind this measure is to make sure people with lower incomes can find a home. Now, they often have to bid against wealthier buyers in the tight housing market. Municipalities can set this requirement on half of owner-occupied homes. The bill also lets municipalities reserve half of owner-occupied homes and rentals for their locals or people with crucial professions like teachers and police officers.

Vladimir Putin was tricked into invading Ukraine, claims Wagner leader

The Russian warlord Yevgeny Prigozhin has said Russia’s defence ministry concocted false pretences to trick Vladimir Putin into invading Ukraine and said Moscow could have avoided the war entirely.

In a half-hour tirade Prigozhin, founder of the notorious Wagner mercenary group, claimed Russia had faced no immediate threat from Ukraine when Putin began his full-scale invasion last year and accused the army’s top brass of deceiving the Russian president for their own personal gain.

The extraordinary rant, posted on social media on Friday, was the former caterer’s latest salvo in a long-running spat with defence minister Sergei Shoigu, who Prigozhin has accused of sabotaging the war effort together with Valery Gerasimov, chief of Russia’s general staff.

Prigozhin’s regular diatribes, in which he claims Russia runs the risk of losing the war after Ukraine began a counteroffensive earlier this month, indicate elite infighting is getting fiercer as Moscow’s war effort continues to struggle.

Though Prigozhin notably refrained from criticising Putin personally and has backed the war’s goals, the video was the first time he publicly questioned Russia’s rationale for the full-scale invasion.

“There was nothing out of the ordinary on February 24,” said Prigozhin, referring to the day Putin ordered the invasion. “The defence ministry is trying to deceive the president and society by saying Ukraine was going mad with aggression and was planning to attack us together with the whole Nato bloc.”

Instead, Prigozhin claimed Shoigu had convinced Putin the war was necessary so “a bunch of bastards could rule the roost and show off about what a strong army they have”, then botched the invasion through “incompetent planning”.

“For some reason, this bunch of idiots thought they were so smart-assed that nobody would understand what they were up to or stop them on their way to Kyiv,” he added.

Full message of Prigozhi “declaring war on the Russian Ministry of Defence:

“PMC Wagner Commanders’ Council made a decision: the evil brought by the military leadership of the country must be stopped.

They neglect the lives of soldiers. They forgot the word “justice”, and we will bring it back.

Those, who destroyed today our guys, who destroyed tens, tens of thousands of lives of Russian soldiers will be punished.

I’m asking: no one resist. Everyone who will try to resist, we will consider them a danger and destroy them immediately, including any checkpoints on our way. And any aviation that we see above our heads.

I’m asking everyone to remain calm, do not succumb to provocations, and remain in their houses. Ideally, those along our way, do not go outside.

After we finished what we started, we will return to the frontline to protect our motherland.

Presidential authority, Government, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Rosgvardia, and other departments will continue operating as before.

We will deal with those who destroy Russian soldiers. And we will return to the frontline.

Justice in the Army will be restored. And after this, justice for the whole of Russia.”

The temperature of the air inside the collapsing pressure structure is reflected in an almost instantaneous geometric change in the temperature to keep the two sides of the gas equations equal.

A Troubling Supreme Court Habeas Decision

The Supreme Court was wrong to deny relief to a man imprisoned for activity that Court’s own rulings indicate was not illegal – one who never had an opportunity to challenge his incarceration on that basis.

There aren’t very many cases where the Supreme Court splits 6-3 along left-right ideological lines, and I think the liberal dissenters got it right. But today’s important habeas corpus decision, Jones v. Hendrix, is one of those times.

The issue in Jones is whether a man incarcerated in a federal prison has the right to file a habeas petition challenging his imprisonment in a situation where an intervening Supreme Court decision—issued many years after his original conviction and appeal—ruled that the activity he was convicted and imprisoned for wasn’t actually a crime. Here is the Court’s summary of what happened in the case of Marcus Jones:

I work in the carbon fiber composite industry. So, as you can imagine, I’m pretty familiar with the properties of carbon fiber composites.

If you asked me, would I ever consider going down in a carbon fiber composite submarine. My answer would be… Depends.

As in… It depends on how far down, and was the submarine specifically designed for that depth.

The Titan was only designed for 1300 meters. Not 4000 meters. Carbon fiber composites have a razor thin margin for failure. They work fantastically within their proper application. Their greatest weakness isn’t the carbon, it’s the polymer’s used to hold the carbon stiff.

Those polymer’s are like any crystal structure. As long as you don’t put stress or pressure on them beyond their sheer point, they’ll last for decades, maybe even centuries. But repeatedly taking them to the limit’s of their sheer points means that micro fracture in their crystal lattices will eventually result in a catastrophic failure.

Interestingly enough, the way that carbon fiber composites fail is so predictable that they are used in the sporting industry specifically because of how they fail. As carbon fiber composites fail, their is an exponential dissipation of energy. This is why they are used as the cockpit’s of F1 race cars. As they fail, they adsorb enormous amounts of kinetic energy.

A submarine isn’t subject to kinetic energy(unless it’s hit by a kinetic weapon like a torpedo), it’s subject to a constant and unrelenting pressure. Carbon fiber composites work great against constant pressure, as long as that pressure remains static. If that pressure varies substantially, then the lattice structure of the polymers in the composite are at high risk of sudden catastrophic failure. In short, micro fracture propagate until suddenly the whole structure fails.

We were not using Carbon but we were using Glass fibre composites. The fans that we built were for very large diesel engines (up to 5 in a train) hauling 2 mile long trains of Iron ore from Mt. Newman to the loading dock on the coast of Western Australia. The high speed aluminium cooling fans were 3 metres across and in the 100F desert environment cooled the diesel engines. Alas the temperature and fan speed caused fan creep and stress, rubbing on the sacrificial fan housings. Some ‘einstein’ decided that fibre glass composites would do the job better. Wrong!

Less creep and expansion than the aluminium but micro fractures in the blade tips and catastrophic destruction of the high speed fans. Quite spectacular. 🙂

We did all kinds of research including hypersonic and supersonic R&D, A job quieting the jet pipes of Boeing airliners, Design and construction and testing of throw away plastic cargo parachutes (taped together with glass tape), (back to front) flame propagation R&D, boundary surface control R&D , thixotropic fluids boundary flow studies, low speed turbulent boundary layer re-energising R&D, cavitation R&D …

The best job I ever had

The Profs never told you HOW to do something. They just told you what DATA they needed and left you to go figure it out yourself. The tradesmen were first class and could build ANYTHING!
When you weren’t busy you could do any project you wanted and a huge workshop was your playground. We built a 1/4 scale V1, a 1/16 scale steam engine and created the first tech to make printed circuits, micro hot wire anemometers, the first LASERs and a Triumph sports car with some radicle additions like a turbo and a very modified V8

    🙂

The composites industry in NZ is deep into leading edge R&D and the racing yacht design and building industry have recently been cleaned out of materials boffins by RocketLabs. AS most of RocketLabs customers are based in the US Peter Beck the CEO and founder of RocketLabs has sold a majority shareholding to US financial outfits. They moved some of the Electron rocket manufacture to the US West coast, and the new Neutron medium sized reusable launcher under manufacture to the US East coast. RocketLabs R&D as well as the satellite design remains based in Auckland NZ. Peter Beck is currently designing and building a constellation of Moon orbiting micro-satellites to bring the Internet and 24/7 communications to future Moon stations.

Neutron Medium weight launcher is no longer into 3D printed engines as was the Electron body and the Ruterford engines, and is reverting to a mix of some printed components and more conventional manufacture for thrust chambers. I jacked up a visit to RocketLabs for the chief rocket engineer of Israel’s IAI. She imagined that she was visiting a bunch of amateurs. It was interesting watching her body language as the briefing progressed. In the end she was leaning forward over the tabbed shaking her head and mumbling … “I can’t believe this…. This is crazy . No you can’t possibly have that level of technology…”
    🙂

    HEH!

Then she tried to sell RocketLabs a first stage IAI booster. I didn’t realise at that time that Peter Beck had already designed and built a prototype 3 D printed Electron launcher.

Smart guy, who never went to university and just started off as a technical tradesman at Fisher and Peikel NZ making kitchen appliances, stoves, refrigerators and washing machines etc, and rockets on the side for universities.

Chattanooga? Let’s see how long this lasts……

Chattanooga is one of the first two cities in the U.S. slated to become one of the World Economic Forum’s “15-minute cities.
    .
    .
These green warriors that now run the city say that “buildings are the number one contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Chattanooga,” and that the people who live and work in them cause unsustainable levels of waste that pollutes green spaces and waterways.

In other words, people are the enemy in the war of climate sustainability.
    .
    .
15-minute cities promote the ability to live, work, attend school, and play where you live without ever using a car. This concept has already been rolled out globally by the WEF. Chattanooga, my once-sleepy little hometown, has installed cameras with facial recognition software and license readers at most intersections, and is rezoning properties to high-density mixed-use designations. Surveillance is a critical component of the 15-minute City because it allows for the monitoring of non-compliant citizens.

Well, FWIW. Interesting take. As Dorian said, a psyop, but not by NATO. By Putin and Prigozhin

    Lemme get this straight.

Prigozhin, who is fully funded by the Russian Government, is close with Putin, and engaged in disinformation psyops like “no ammo in Bakhmut”; says crazy shit again, and the folks didn’t even consider the possibility it was Russian disinformation?

There was no civil war. There were zero casualties. It was just Prigozhin being batshit crazy like he always is, and right back to the frontlines after his outburst.

What do I think? I think Prigozhin is working with Putin as usual to accomplish any number of goals.

What did Putin gain? The disguise of the movement of mass quantities of his troops, the appearance of being weak to bait Ukraine to attack (they did and lost outside Artyomovsk), and he weeded out any traitors who may have tried to join with Prigozhin.

What did Putin ultimately lose? Nothing. There was no civil war. No civilians in danger. And now the country and the public are galvanized around him.

Now the NAFO turds will be on to the next thing and right back to hating Prigozhin and Wagner. They will forget that they briefly worshipped the man who took their beloved Bakhmut from them. Just like they did with Belgorod, this turned out to not be the end of Russia, despite the [Ukranian flag emoji] accounts being certain of it.

As I said before, the only place this was a civil war, was on the Internet. And you just witnessed who is a reliable source, and who is not. Who reports on verifiable information, and those who report on wild speculation.

Careful who you follow. Choose wisely.

Pro basketball player Óscar Cabrera was diagnosed with myocarditis in 2021 after collapsing during a game.

Cabrera said the heart condition was a result of the COVID jab, which he was required to get for work.

He died of a heart attack this week at 28.

    https://twitter.com/Outkick/status/1672668661369262080

    He died Thursday

I got a damn Myocarditis from taking a f-cking vaccine. (I got 2 doses of Pfizer) And I knew it! Many people warned me. But guess what? It was compulsory or I couldn’t work. I am an international professional athlete and I am playing in Spain. I have no health problem, nothing, not hereditary, no asthma, NOTHING! I suddenly collapsed to the ground in the middle of a match and almost died. I’m still recovering and I’ve had 11 different cardiology tests done and guess? They find nothing. I have no cholesterol, no fat, nothing! 7% body fat 93% muscle. When they give me the diagnosis, they tell me that I won’t be able to play for at least 5 months until my heart goes down again and they can’t give me that medicine.

10 reasons we KNOW that COVID-19 leaked from the Wuhan Lab

    1. The “suicide” of the Wuhan lab collaborator, Dr. Yusen
A key Chinese scientist who collaborated with the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Dr. Zhou Yusen, filed for a patent for a COVID vaccine on February 24, 2020, according to documents obtained by The Australian.

The early timing of his filing raises concerns that the unnamed vaccine was in development months before the COVID-19 pandemic became public.

Yet less than three months after filing his patent, Dr. Zhou Yusen died under mysterious circumstances.

The Chinese media said he died from “falling off the roof” of the Wuhan lab.

    https://nypost.com/2023/06/19/10-reasons-we-know-that-covid-19-leaked-from-the-wuhan-lab/

    And this……..(it’s a long thread)

#13 Before migrating to the U.S. and receiving funding from Dr. Fauci and Dr. Hotez, Dr. Du Lanying co-published research on SARS-coronaviruses with Dr. Jiang Shibo and Dr. Zhou Yusen for the People’s Liberation Army’s Academy of Military Medical Sciences.

Going to have to quit drinking beer. I make nice meals that I eat once per day and have a lunch that is food, but girl food. Today was 2oz of mozzarella and a plump tomato.

The main meal I cook i just eat small portions, you may remember I complain anything I cook I am eating for days.

If I calculate calories from what I drink it is often 1200 to 1600 per day. LOL 12 cans of Miller High Life is 1800 calories, that is when I get silly on here!

Anyway, even if I don’t eat for days I still cannot get below 224 pounds.

Going to have to give up alcohol, not because I drive drunk, get into fights, abuse my wife, forget to feed my cats but just to lose weight.

Men are different, they gain inside fat. If I clench my stomach muscles and grab the fat their ain’t much on the outside. It is all wrapped around on my internal organs and it is uncomfortable. A bloated feeling.

So, beer has to go…. But without beer my wit and sparkling personality and repartee with Bunk will wither and die.

Cat story. When I got the boys they were two days old. Had to be fed every few hours night and day. They lived in a cardboard box with a 2 litre coke bottle filled with hot water and wrapped in a tshirt next to my bed.

When they were about three weeks old they could climb out of the box, crawl into bed with me and snuggle under my arm. They weighed about half a pound. That was ok with me as sleep was not happening bottle feeding them every two hours.

Fast forward to now. They are three and a half years old. They weigh thirteen pounds. Why the fuck do they STILL both insist on doing the snuggling shit when I am trying to sleep?

Cats are assholes. And to quote George Floyd often I yell at them ” I can’t breath. “

Bullshit. He’ll find another way to do it

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink said he’s no longer using the term “ESG” (environment, social and governance) because it is being politically “weaponized” and he’s “ashamed” to be part of the debate on the issue.

    https://www.axios.com/2023/06/26/larry-fink-ashamed-esg-weaponized-desantis

The backstory: BlackRock’s bullish outlook on responsible environmental, social and governance investing is being blasted by conservatives as “woke capitalism” and has drawn boycotts from Florida and Texas.

Fink has been a major proponent of factoring in climate change risks to investing strategies and corporate leadership.
What’s new: In a conversation at the Aspen Ideas Festival on Sunday, Fink acknowledged that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ decision to pull $2 billion in assets hurt his firm in 2022, but made clear last year was his company’s best with net flows of $200 billion from U.S. clients.

What he’s saying: “I’m ashamed of being part of this conversation,” Fink said.

“When I write these [investment] letters, it was never meant to be a political statement. … They were written to identify longterm issues to our longterm investors,” he told the crowd.
Yes, but: When pressed on the statement later in the conversation, Fink backtracked.

“I never said I was ashamed,” he said, incorrectly. “I’m not ashamed. I do believe in conscientious capitalism.”
“I’m not going to use the word ESG because it’s been misused by the far left and the far right,” he added.

    https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2023/06/kim-dotcom-did-putin-prigozhin-play-cia-tune/

This whole CIA thing is just so typical of an organization that outgrew its reaison d’etre and became a semi-criminal enterprise, when it became more interested in surviving for its own sake. Jack Kennedy knew that the CIA was pulling his string and would probably end up killing him when he threatened to pull the plug on the CIA, by attempting to trim down their power after the Bay of Pigs shambles. That was never going to happen and Kennedy paid with his life. Lee Harvey Oswald was just the patsy who took the fall but it was a CIA bullet that ended it for Kennedy. Truman should have scrapped the OSS/ CIA in the 1950s, before the CIA got more interested in surviving as an organization, rather than serving a civilian administration. Eisenhower knew it too and specifically warned his administration about the CIA survival instincts, but by then it was too late to pull the reins in on the CIA. Kennedy had no chance, as by then the CIA bureaucracy was already too powerful, and totally set up to survive, rather than being a servant of the administration. Read at least the first tranche of the comments as well.

The CIA had engineered itself a $6 billion slush fund to finance a Russian coup….. But it failed when Prigozhin did a deal with Putin to take the money and run. No doubt Lukashenko in Belarus will get a few $$$$ as well, hence the speed (totally unheard of prior to this ) of his brokering a peace between Prigozhin and Putin. The only ones out of pocket are the CIA ….. AGAIN!
The cat is now out of the bag and this will now be an exercise in active suppression. I seriously doubt that it’s going to succeed and this whole CIA led operation is going to be fought over until the 2024 election. Meanwhile the reality of what is happening in Eastern Ukraine can’t be denied. Ukraine is finding it attacking a serious defensive line and in today’s climate where defence is a whole lot easier than attack, as the Ukrainians are discovering. The Ukraine is losing 7:1 at the moment and the ratio for an attacker is to have a 4 to 1 superiority against a defender. The Ukrainian forces in Eastern Ukraine are no where near that ratio so expect their losses in men and equipment to mount exponentially. That 7:1 loss ratio will creep up to 10:1 and the Ukrainian military will just bleed out. Also don’t forget that the Russian military manuals are NOT like Western tactical Manuals. Russia treats small tactical nukes as just another ‘dialable’ warhead between 300 tonnes deliverable up to 100 kilo tonnes, where Russian Corps Commanders are authorised to make the decision to activate tac-nukes without asking permission from the Russian government in a tactical move from conventional warfare to tactical nuclear warfare. Western forces (AKA NATO) have a very different policy regarding the transition from conventional to tac-nuke. Those decisions are made in NATO at the strategic level.

Letting one’s own policy structure assume to be mirrored by one’s own adversary is a major error.

First, brutal though Putin may be, he is, in comparison to people like Prigozhin, “a cautious, milksop moderate.”

Second, Hitchens is right that “militant Russian nationalism is a powerful political force that Putin struggles to keep on his side at the best of times.”

These aren’t the best of times, and Prigozhin’s excellent coup adventure, not to mention Putin’s rocky adventure in Ukraine, can’t have endeared Putin to such chthonic forces.

The appearance of weakness is unacceptable.

    It’s also unforgivable.

Which means that, political calculus being what it is, Putin, no matter what deal was struck, “surely cannot now leave Prigozhin unpunished.”
