It is absolutely inexcusable that, nine years on, that there are still no plans to rebuild the Orthodox Christian Church building that was destroyed on September 11, 2001. The parish still exists, but the New York/New Jersey Port Authority has made it impossible for the priest and parishoners to rebuild either on their original site or on any alternative neighboring site. The rebuilding of this church is being tied up in red tape, while at the same time, Mayor Bloomberg has been lobbying for 9-11 tax dollars to be used for building the Ground Zero Mosque.

WSJ: St. Nicholas Church Begins Legal Action Against the Port Authority

By JOSH BARBANEL

The leaders of St. Nicholas Church, the small whitewashed Greek Orthodox Church destroyed by falling debris on Sept. 11, 2001, have begun legal action against the Port Authority demanding that the church be rebuilt under the terms of a deal worked out several years ago.

A claim filed against the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey by church leaders and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America on Monday accused the agency, which is overseeing Ground Zero’s rebuilding, of engaging in “arrogance, bad faith and fraudulent conduct” and “shabby and unlawful treatment.”

Under state law, the church is required to file a notice of claim against the Port Authority for some of its claims, and wait 60 days before it can go to court, according to Mark. G. Cunha, a lawyer for the church.

In 2008, after years of discussions, the Port Authority and the church announced an agreement to rebuild the church, which was originally located on Cedar Street, on a nearby site on Liberty Street. As part of the deal, the Port Authority said it would pay $20 million toward the cost of the new church.

But in March, the deal fell through. The Port Authority accused the church of making excessive demands, while church leaders say the Port Authority unilaterally withdrew from negotiations.

John Kelly, a spokesman for the Port Authority, said officials hadn’t yet seen the filing and couldn’t comment on it. But he said: “We very much hope the Orthodox Church rebuilds on their original site.”

In papers served on Monday the church is now seeking to compel the Port Authority to live up to the terms of what the church said is a “binding preliminary agreement.”

It said that even after the Port Authority backed away from the agreement, the authority began digging in the site of the old church and is trespassing “without permission, notice or any legal justification.” The underground portion of the old church site is part of what is to become an underground vehicle security center, where trucks entering the site would be searched…

USA Today: Church left out of 9/11 renewal

NEW YORK — Towers are rising again at the site of the World Trade Center, a place of devastation turned into a construction hub. But the cross-topped belfry of St. Nicholas Church isn’t among them.

Nine years after it was destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the little Greek Orthodox church that stood across the street from the twin towers is farther away than ever from being rebuilt.

Slow progress toward a new home halted last year when the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which controls the Ground Zero site, broke off discussions with the church over where and how a new church would be built.

On Sunday, the eve of St. Nicholas Day, 70 families of the congregation gathered near the site to light candles and pray for a way to rebuild their spiritual home amid the office towers and memorial plaza taking shape. “It’s not a political statement. This is our place, and we belong there,” says Mark Arey, a priest and director of interfaith relations for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America…

The Grauniad Does Not Get It

Kudos to GOV

Congratulations to the venerable blog Gates of Vienna, which has just celebrated its sixth blogiversary. Though based in the US, its admins and contributors have great familiarity with the UK and European political scenes as well as that of the US. With their wealth of European correspondents, GOV has accurately been called the voice of the European counterjihad. If you haven’t been reading it every day, you’ve been missing a great deal.

The left-wing UK newspaper The Guardian, f/k/a The Manchester Guardian, a/k/a The Grauniad, is desperately trying to spin away the awareness of the dangers of Islam that has been taking hold among the public in the US and the UK.

The cat is out of the bag with regard to the true nature of Islam, and the Grauniad doesn’t like it one bit. In their article, the Grauniad blames the growth of anti-Islamism on everything except the recent actions of Muslim activists and Islamic doctrine itself. The paper is particularly upset about the English Defence League (EDL) and its participation, along with Pam Geller, Stop Islamisation of America, and members of the Tea Party movement, in the protests against the proposed Ground Zero Mosque in New York City. In their attempts to use guilt by association to cover up the truth by libeling conservatives and counterjihadists alike, the Guarniad has come to resemble nothing so much as the Chucklehead at LGF.

Gates of Vienna does a great job of calling them out on it.

GOV: The Grauniad on the EDL and the Tea Parties

I’m not going to examine the latest from The Guardian in any detail, since it’s really just more of the same. I’m just posting this article to point out the extent to which the leftist press are using the websites of ICLA and 4Freedoms — not to mention American Counterjihad sites — as sources for their reporting.

As you read through this, see if you come to the same conclusion I did: The Gnudaria doesn’t have a clue about what’s going on. They read our blogs and our forums, and they quote our words, but it’s like a deaf person reading a musical score — they have no real sense of what it all means. This is especially true of their account of what is going on here in the USA, for which they have a thoroughly tin ear:

English Defence League forges links with America’s Tea Party

As the far-right group marches in Leicester, details are emerging of growing contacts with extremist US groups in a ‘war on Islamification”

The English Defence League, a far-right grouping aimed at combating the “Islamification” of British cities, has developed strong links with the American Tea Party movement.

An Observer investigation has established that the EDL has made contact with anti-jihad groups within the Tea Party organisation and has invited a senior US rabbi and Tea Party activist to London this month. Rabbi Nachum Shifren, a regular speaker at Tea Party conventions, will speak about Sharia law and also discuss funding issues.

The league has also developed links with Pamela Geller, who was influential in the protests against plans to build an Islamic cultural centre near Ground Zero. Geller, darling of the Tea Party’s growing anti-Islamic wing, is advocating an alliance with the EDL. The executive director of the Stop Islamisation of America organisation, she recently met EDL leaders in New York and has defended the group’s actions, despite a recent violent march in Bradford…

The conclusion that I reach is that the Grauniad (and the rest of the leftist press) not only has no clue about what is going on, but also that they actively avoid getting a clue. They are afraid of the truth because they would have to abandon their entire world view, start over from scratch, and learn to identify, and be ready to fight for, everything that is truly worthwhile. As everyone can see from my own nom de guerre, the year of the Battle of Kosovo, such a prospect holds no terrors for me, but it sure does scare the leftists who put their faith only in the futile strategy of appeasement.

CAIR attends Rifqa’s Trial

Watchobsessiondotorg has video of the confrontation between Robert Spencer and Mohammed Lufti, “Honor member of CAIR”.

I’m assuming the guy from CAIR showed up to tell us how muslims aren’t all fundamentalist that would kill their own family members to preserve “islamic honor”.

Watch it all. After Mohammed Lufti gets caught in a lie he let’s his guard down and admits support for both Hamas and Hezbollah. See Atlas Shrugs for a peek into who else he sympathizes with.

To Honor Aqsa Parvez, Trees Planted In Jerusalem

Pamela Geller posts that in addition to the Aqsa Parvez garden erected in the town of Pelham in Canada, Atlas readers have planted a grove of trees in American Independence Park in Jerusalem, Israel, through the Jewish National Fund.

There will also be a plaque to commemorate the grove of trees which will read:

In Loving Memory of

Aqsa Parvez

and

All Victims of Honor Killings Worldwide

The plaque is 4 X 4 and it will be green to indicate Atlas’ designation to the grove.  It will take about 24 months to put the plaque up.  Pamela suggested and I agree that we should all go when the plaque goes up.

It is my understanding that the plaque will go here:

AIPWall

Atlas Shrugs’ post, with additional information, can be found here.

I personally do not know enough about this story to comment about it specifically.  However, I want to personally give credit to Robert, Pamela and their readers/posters for going beyond putting mere words on their respective internet blogs and actually taking ACTION in the real world.  These two memorials for Aqsa prove that when Conservatives do more than just talk, we can get things done!  May this be just the beginning!
