Several Layers of Awesome

Although the sign says “Mockingbird Heights Drag Strip,” the photo was probably taken at the NHRA Drag Strip in Pomona California in the early 1960s. Fred Gwynne as Herman Munster was accompanied by Grampa Munster (Al Lewis) for a publicity stunt.

I watched the show as a kid for obvious reasons, but especially to see Marilyn Munster. All the little chicks with the crimson lips  fawned over 10 year old Eddie Munster, and one of his fans finally tracked down Butch Patrick.

In any case, it seems like a good intro for an Overnight Open Thread.

PHILADELPHIA — Pioneering fantasy artist Frank Frazetta died Monday in a Fort Myers, Fla., hospital, a manager said. He was 82.

Frazetta had been out to dinner with his daughters Sunday but suffered a stroke at his Boca Grande home later that night and was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital, manager Rob Pistella said. A hospital spokeswoman confirmed the death, as did his daughter Heidi Frazetta Grabin.

“He’s going to be remembered as the most renowned fantasy illustrator of the 20th Century,” Pistella said.

Frazetta created covers and illustrations for more than 150 books and comic books, along with album covers, movie posters and original paintings. His illustrations of Conan the Barbarian, Tarzan, Vampirella and other characters influenced many later artists.

Frazetta had many imitators, but there was only one Frazetta.

The image above was one of my favorites in the 1970s, but my girlfriend wasn’t impressed when I projected it and copied it onto my dorm room wall with magic marker, so I broke up with her. I was like that back then. With that in mind, let’s have an Overnight Open Thread.

A Hurling Player Lives Here

Don’t know the ancient Irish game? It’s a brutal combination of football, soccer, rugby, field hockey, baseball, jai alai and golf, traditionally played without pads or helmets and the best players have scars and are usually missing teeth. Since 1 January 2010 helmets are required at all levels. Spoilsports.

The goal is to get the silotar (a hardball about the size of a cue ball) over or under the goalposts with a hurley (an oversized wooden spoon) by throwing it, tossing it up and batting it, carrying it on the hurley while running, or driving it down the pitch with an underhand smack.

A team gets one point for getting it over and through the uprights, and three points if it gets it past the goal keeper into the net underneath the goal posts.

If you ever get a chance to see a hurling match, you’re in for some fun, and you HAVE to watch the game or you risk serious injury from speeding silotars and sharp flying broken hurleys. Tip your ale only between plays.

Almost forgot. Everyone’s been clamoring for an Overnight Open Thread. Kick it.
