French President Sarkozy Condemns Iranian regime

by Phantom Ace ( 63 Comments › )

The world is upside down. While the US under Obama is supporting the Iranian regime, France and other European leaders have spoken out. They have condemned the regime and their violence against the Iranian people. Not to long ago, it was America that supported people’s aspirations and Europeans backing tyrants.

European leaders condemn Iranian violence

European leaders today parted company with a cautious White House in their response to events in Iran, with France and Italy speaking out against the brutal treatment of demonstrators protesting at the presidential election result.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, described the situation in Iran as “extremely alarming” and denounced as “totally disproportionate” the crackdown on demonstrators, which has left eight people dead.

Sarkozy, who was in Gabon for the funeral of President Omar Bongo, said: “The ruling power claims to have won the elections … If that were true, we must ask why they find it necessary to imprison their opponents and repress them with such violence.”

The world is indeed upside down.

A Bad Economy Sees An Antisemtism Moon Rising In Europe

Once again, an economic downturn in Europe is causing an increase in Antisemitism.  How quickly they forgot!

World depressions lead to a rise in anti-Semitism. All over Europe, the evidence is around us

antisemitism

Last month a 32-year-old IT worker, Michael Booksatz, was beaten up in the streets of north London by two hooded men shouting about Palestinians. Jewish students at the London School of Economics – home to many brilliant Jews who fled Hitler’s Germany – are now frightened by anti-Jewish abuse from Islamist students. Graffiti such as “Kill the Jews” or “Jihad 4 Israel” appear close to synagogues in London.

The Metropolitan Police report four times as many anti-Jewish incidents in recent weeks as Islamaphobic events. The respected Community Security Trust, which records anti-Jewish attacks with scrupulous rigour, reports as many attacks on Jews – verbal, vandalism and some violent – in the first weeks of 2009 as in the first six months of last year.

As the world enters a new era of crisis, anti-Semitism is back. History, as ever, begins to repeat itself. The slumps and stock market fever expressed in Zola’s novel, L’Argent, or the populist anger against Wall Street at the end of the 19th century gave rise to the virulent anti-Semitic politics witnessed in France in connection with the Dreyfus case or the takeover of Vienna by openly anti-Semitic politicians. The Great Depression gave rise to the worst expressions of anti-Semitism ever seen, namely the politics that led to the Holocaust. But even in Britain the Duke of Wellington of the time was leader of a secret anti-Jewish organisation which had the initials PJ – Perish Judah – on its letterhead.

The economic crises of the 1970s led to a marked increase in the vote for the National Front in Britain and the openly anti-Semitic BNP, its successor extreme party, is doing very well in local elections – below the radar of the national opinion polls.

The distress and upset over the terrible pictures of children killed in Israel’s attacks on Hamas in Gaza have allowed anti-Israeli feelings to be more violently and vehemently expressed than ever before. Criticism of Israel is not anti-Semitic. But all anti-Semites hate the existence of a Jewish state and hiding behind code words such as anti-Zionism increases the density and viciousness of their anti-Jewish utterances.

In Italy, the streets of Milan are daubed with slogans urging Italians not to buy goods at Jewish shops – an echo of the Nazi slogan “Kauft Nicht Bei Juden”. In Germany, radio phone-ins are full of accusations that the bankers accused of being responsible for the current economic crisis are Jews. In anti-Israel demonstrations in Berlin, placards stating “It was a good idea to use gas” or “I’m anti-Semitic and that’s a good thing” were carried. Thus every Jew is made to feel as if they do not fully belong in the countries where they were born or the societies that they participate in.

Charles throws Geert Wilders under the Bus

Charles wrote an email to Geert Wilders a while back asking him about his planned alliance with the Vlaams Belang. He hasn’t answered. Now with the Dutch charging him with hate speech, Charles kicks him.

Geert Wilders to Be Charged with Hate Speech in Netherlands

Wilders, however, has called for the Koran to be outlawed. In other words, Wilders wants to ban books with which he doesn’t agree. If there’s one thing we should have learned from history, it’s that book-banning never turns out well—and it’s anathema to the American ideals of free speech and free choice of religion.

This prosecution is disgusting and wrong, but it’s difficult to cast Wilders as an icon of free speech when he explicitly advocates taking away the rights of others.

Charles has now turned on Geert. All becausehe never recieved an answer to his email. This shows Charles isn’t serious about Jihad and is fake. But it gets better! Kilgore and Sharmuta have their say as well!

Sharmuta 1/21/09 10:34:35 am reply quote

I’m also having a hard time being sympathetic if he’s going to run with neo-fascists and their sympathizers. But I guess that’s the price one pays for the company they keep.

But is agenda to ban the Quran and make Islam illegal is reprehensible. The laws used to prosecute him for free speech are equally awful. He would have a much better moral standing and would be a much better advocate for freedom of speech if he also advocated freedom for others.

Killgore’s Pro-Islamic colors are showing and Sharmuta is just following Charles. This is sick and pathetic. LGF is increasing isolated and irrelevant.

When Truth Hurts

Prosecute.

A Dutch court has ordered prosecutors to put a right-wing politician on trial for making anti-Islamic statements.

Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders made a controversial film last year equating Islam with violence and has likened the Koran to Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf.

“In a democratic system, hate speech is considered so serious that it is in the general interest to… draw a clear line,” the court in Amsterdam said.

“…to draw a clear line…”

Between what? Free speech and hate speech? Or between unpopular truth and popular fantasy? Between intolerant hatred and bigotry hidden under the guise of religion?

There is more on the line here than Freedom of speech. It is one thing to limit free speech by prosecuting inciting and hateful comments. But the real danger is to limit free speech that expresses truth.
