International Business Times has the story:

The Iraqi police have foiled a major bombing plot in Baghdad, where 18 dolls stuffed with bombs were seized by the security forces, which were meant to be scattered on the roads leading to Karbala during Arbaeen – a Shia Muslim religious observance.

Arbaeen, which this year will be held on December 3, is a Shia religious observance that occurs forty days after the Day of Ashura to commemorate the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.

During Arbaeen at least 20 million people walk to the city of Karbala in Iraq, making it one of the largest pilgrimage gatherings on Earth.

The booby-trapped bombs were discovered by the security forces in al-Husseiniya – a predominantly Shiite suburb in northeastern Baghdad, Kuwait News agency (KUNA) reported.

According to Press TV, Isis was planning to plant the bomb on a roads towards Karbala from Baghdad.

Double-digit inflation rate prevails in much of the US – here are the real stats!

Writes economics aficionada yenta-fada:

An interesting alternative to the CPI (Consumer Price Index). It measures the costs of 500 essential things that people need, and concludes that there is inflation.

From the site:

The Chapwood Index reflects the true cost-of-living increase in America. Updated and released twice a year, it reports the unadjusted actual cost and price fluctuation of the top 500 items on which Americans spend their after-tax dollars in the 50 largest cities in the nation.

It exposes why middle-class Americans — salaried workers who are given routine pay hikes and retirees who depend on annual increases in their corporate pension and Social Security payments — can’t maintain their standard of living. Plainly and simply, the Index shows that their income can’t keep up with their expenses, and it explains why they increasingly have to turn to the government for entitlements to bail them out.

It’s because salary and benefit increases are pegged to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which for more than a century has purported to reflect the fluctuation in prices for a typical “basket of goods” in American cities — but which actually hasn’t done that for more than 30 years.

The middle class has seen its purchasing power decline dramatically in the last three decades, forcing more and more people to seek entitlements when their savings are gone. And as long as pay raises and benefit increases are tied to a false CPI, this trend will continue.

The myth that the CPI represents the increase in our cost of living is why the Chapwood Index was created. What differentiates it from the CPI is simple, but critically important…

Remember this controversy?
If #ObamaIsNotSatan, why is Satan wearing a hoodie?

Hollywood Reporter has the story…

Eager to avoid a controversy about the devil looking like the president, Roma Downey and Mark Burnett decided to leave the character out of their film, which is based on “The Bible” miniseries.

Scenes with an actor who played the devil but looked a lot like President Barack Obama have been edited out of the upcoming movie Son of God, one of the producers told The Hollywood Reporter.

The film, which 20th Century Fox opens on Feb. 28, is primarily a reshaped version of the The Bible, last year’s hit TV miniseries that featured actor Mohamen Mehdi Ouazanni as Satan.

For Son of God, the 10-hour miniseries needed to be cut down to the two hours or so that focuses on Jesus; Downey says they went out of their way to leave the controversial Satan out of the film.

A year ago, bloggers immediately noted the similarities between the Satan of The Bible miniseries and Obama and side-by-side comparisons went viral. Burnett, Downey and History, which aired the show, each issued statements supporting the president and slamming those that made the “false connection,” as History put it, between Obama and Satan.

This time around, though, Downey says she’s eager to avoid a similar situation, even though Jesus and Satan both made their appearance in The Bible miniseries during the same episode, so it would have made sense that Son of God also include Satan.

“Someone made a comment that the actor who played the devil vaguely resembled our president, and suddenly the media went nuts,” Downey said Monday. “The next day, when I was sure everyone would only be talking about Jesus, they were talking about Satan instead.”

She added: “For our movie, Son of God, I wanted all of the focus to be on Jesus. I want his name to be on the lips of everyone who sees this movie, so we cast Satan out. It gives me great pleasure to tell you that the devil is on the cutting-room floor.”

Deleting Satan makes nonsense out of the Bible

Without the actions of Satan leading to the Fall of Man, what need would there have been for the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, or for His Sacrifice on the Cross, in the first place? As Baudelaire warned, “the devil’s best trick is to persuade you that he doesn’t exist.” If we cannot face the existence of evil, we become powerless before it.
