Double-digit inflation rate prevails in much of the US – here are the real stats!

Writes economics aficionada yenta-fada:

An interesting alternative to the CPI (Consumer Price Index). It measures the costs of 500 essential things that people need, and concludes that there is inflation.

From the site:

The Chapwood Index reflects the true cost-of-living increase in America. Updated and released twice a year, it reports the unadjusted actual cost and price fluctuation of the top 500 items on which Americans spend their after-tax dollars in the 50 largest cities in the nation.

It exposes why middle-class Americans — salaried workers who are given routine pay hikes and retirees who depend on annual increases in their corporate pension and Social Security payments — can’t maintain their standard of living. Plainly and simply, the Index shows that their income can’t keep up with their expenses, and it explains why they increasingly have to turn to the government for entitlements to bail them out.

It’s because salary and benefit increases are pegged to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which for more than a century has purported to reflect the fluctuation in prices for a typical “basket of goods” in American cities — but which actually hasn’t done that for more than 30 years.

The middle class has seen its purchasing power decline dramatically in the last three decades, forcing more and more people to seek entitlements when their savings are gone. And as long as pay raises and benefit increases are tied to a false CPI, this trend will continue.

The myth that the CPI represents the increase in our cost of living is why the Chapwood Index was created. What differentiates it from the CPI is simple, but critically important…

iPhone users target of ‘Wave’ microwave oven charging hoax #FAIL

CTV News has the story:

A fake Apple ad making the rounds online claims that iPhone users can charge their devices wirelessly in the microwave.

The ad, which shares many design characteristics with official Apple advertising, describes a new ‘Wave’ feature in iOS 8, the latest mobile operating system released for Apple’s mobile device users.

“You can now Wave-charge your device by placing it within a household microwave for a minute and a half,” reads the post. “iOS 8 contains new drivers that interface with your device’s radio-baseband allowing it to synchronize with microwave frequencies and use them to recharge our batter.”

If that sounds too good to be true, that’s because it is. Putting your phone in the microwave could ruin both the phone and the oven within seconds.

Nevertheless, some people have posted on social media about their failed attempts to Wave-charge their phones. Rather than quick-charging their devices, people claimed the results were a burnt phone and a microwave fire.

The prank appears to have originated on the online bulletin board 4chan, where people wrote posts suggesting they had successfully charged their phones in microwaves.

4chan, by the way, is an infamous hangout for sadistic pranksters, over-the-top perverts, and Internet trolls, who by their own admission are just terrible human beings. Just sayin’.

Real science here:

and now this:

SAN FRANCISCO — Two weeks ago, the press and public fawned over the new iPhone and Apple Watch. On Wednesday, they couldn’t gripe enough.

Apple yanked a spanking-new operating system update that disabled cellular service and access to the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, touching off a minor revolt on Twitter. Then, there is the matter of some iPhone 6 Plus models that bend.

Apple says it is “actively investigating” its software woes.

Welcome to the land of hype, sky-high expectations and frenzied customers.

“Clearly, after all of the anticipation, the big event (on Sept. 9), the very favorable reviews, these revelations perhaps dampen some of the enthusiasm for and around these offerings,” S&P Capital analyst Scott Kessler says. “But we don’t think that will fundamentally impair the prospects or the progress of these devices.”

Software bugs and a possible hardware glitch, while embarrassing, hardly tarnished Apple stock on Wednesday. Shares were down slightly, to $101.75. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus phones, meanwhile, continue to sell at record rates.

The backlash, which took root on Twitter and escalated, underscore the risks a high-profile company like Apple faces when it releases a new product amid pent-up demand and expectations. Facebook has encountered the same vociferous reaction whenever it rolls out a new feature.

iPhones hard to find? You’ll have to play the waiting game

Americans’ reaction to new Apple products has become a rite of cultural passage: Wait in line for hours to be the first to get the new product, complain loudly about its deficiencies — which are eventually fixed — then pine for the next version of that product. (Steve Jobs may have been able to pull this off…)

“Apple compared to anyone else has a flawless track record in product, and that just raises the bar to catch them on something,” says Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray. “It has become a game with these releases: Who can find the first problem?”

This cracks me up. Guy standing with his buddies, holding a beer, and without warning, gravity strikes him down. Reminded me of this guy. “FAIL” videos are common  (many are too hard to watch without cringing) but that one had me laughing as much as this one did:

KissCam Fail
Awesome audience reactions.

Obama photo-op FAIL: “Door of No Return” actually a garbage chute

Obama stands at his own ‘door of no return’

Obama at 'Door of No Return'

They call it “optics.”

The White House has a team of people – you taxpayers foot the bill, of course – that spends its days thinking of the best way to portray the president in the most favorable light.

(“Maybe we should snap him riding a bike in Hawaii?” “Let’s snap him playing hoops!” “His 122nd round of golf? No cameras please.”)

But sometimes, they snooze. Like last week, when The Team let the president step out – for the cameras – at the Door of No Return.

Now, President George W. Bush stood at the very same spot in 2003, but at a different place entirely – stunning party pickups in the 2002 midterms, majority in the House and Senate, headed to re- election, on the top of the world. It was a picture, nothing more.

Thursday, though, was some very bad “optics.” President Obama, standing alone, morose, looking down, sullen, mock contemplative, within the Door of No Return. Below him, rust-stained cinder blocks, craggy rocks of a shallow port, the Atlantic Ocean.

At another time, meaningless. But at this precise moment, a few frames that encapsulate the president, now, and his plight in millions of ways – far beyond the few million megapixels.

First, the scene wasn’t what it seemed. While the Huffington Post called it “very powerful moment” – the president standing at a doorway in Senegal from which Africans were said to have been shipped across the ocean into American slavery – it was not that at all.

He was, in fact, standing at a garbage chute.

“Pictures on Thursday,” The Telegraph newspaper reported, “showed Mr. Obama standing with his wife Michelle at Goree’s so-called Door of No Return, a dark passageway from where the fort’s human cargo is said to have been loaded via gangplanks onto ships. However, despite the claims that millions of slaves passed through the door, its most likely use is now thought to have been for disposing of rubbish. Likewise, the waters it overlooks are too rocky and shallow for a slave ship to have used it as a loading bay.”

So, like so many things with the president, all was not as it seemed. “There are literally no historians who believe the Slave House is what they’re claiming it to be, or that believe Goree was statistically significant in terms of the slave trade,” said Ralph Austen, a professor at the University of Chicago.
