Peres Says Peace Is Made by Closing the Eyes

(IsraelNN.com) President Shimon Peres told Diaspora Jewish leaders Monday, “You have to close your eyes” to make peace. He also reasoned that a peace agreement with the Palestinian Authority will encourage Sunni Muslims against Ahmadinejad.

Speaking at the annual General Assembly of the United Jewish Committees, he said that “making peace is a little bit like marriage [and] you have to close your eyes and accept what is possible to accept.” His audience laughed and applauded.

He also explained his reasoning why surrendering Judea and Samaria to the PA and establishing a new Arab state in their place would have a domino effect on peace in the Middle East.

Iran is the only regional country that wants to control the Middle East, President Peres stated. He reasoned that a peace pact with the PA would show Sunni Muslims it does not have to accept Shi’ite dominance by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s faction.

He wants “to run the Middle East, in the name of religion, the octogenarian president continued.” The Persians in Iran are, all told, 35 million people. The Iranians are 70 million, half of them minorities, and half are Persians. And it is the Persians who are the producers of the ayatollahs and the fanatic people. They want to control 350 million people [of the Middle East], 90 percent of whom are Sunni.”

I do believe it will have a domino effect. One by one, they’ll know what they already know. Terrorism works. He is delusional if he thinks it will make the Sunnis hate Israel any less.

Cuban and Venezuelan leaders welcomed the news of Barack Obama’s huge win on Tuesday.
Iran Press TVĀ reported:

Cuba and Venezuela, two countries known for their criticism of US policies are now expressing satisfaction over Barack Obama’s victory.Ā

“If Obama takes some action to ease the embargo, it would be welcomed and of course it would be of help, but we’re prepared for conditions to remain the same,” Cuba’s Foreign Investment Minister Marta Lomas said Wednesday in a statement.Ā

There is optimism about Obama’s declaration during his campaign that he would be ready to talk about easing restrictions on travel and on remittances the money US Cubans send to family and friends in Cuba.Ā

Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro who remains first secretary of the ruling Communist Party, on Tuesday called Obama “intelligent, well-educated and composed” in an endorsement released in the official press.

Meanwhile…Ā Iran is urging Barack Obama toĀ keep his promisesĀ and make fundamental changes in US foreign policy.
Iran is looking forward to a US troop withdrawal from the region.

Bayefsky: Focus, People

We seem to have forgotten something: Focus, People.

Since the time of Hitler, civilization has never been so close to the brink of total catastrophe. Ā This American election will decide whether civilization as we know it will survive. Ā As much as economic questions are currently front and center, with blame to go all round, this is not an election primarily about corporate greed, or individuals living beyond their means, or government neglect of economic oversight. Nor is it about whether we should have gone into Iraq where, like it or not, American boots on the ground have begun to create an emerging democracy. This election is about whether there will be a nuclear holocaust.

Alarmist? I sure hope so. Isn’t it about time that we got to the point about the stakes in this election? How many more pundits do we have to watch talking about the minutae — a candidate’s look, an accent, a stumble, a slogan? We have four weeks to talk about the thing that matters most: a nuclear-armed Iran, and which candidate will prevent it.
