Construction Of The Empire State Building

First of all, that caption is incorrect, and it doesn’t show the start of work. Excavation of the site began on 21 January 1930, and construction of the building itself started symbolically on 17 March – St. Patrick’s Day. The ribbon was cut on 1 May 1931. Regardless, that’s an astounding feat, timewise.

Wikipedia claims that the building design was completed in two weeks. That’s an impossibility, unless they’re referring to the schematic design alone. The foundation may have been designed within that span, based upon the calculations of previous high-rise structures, with the rest of the superstructure designed and documented during construction. (That method is called “fast-track design” today.) From Wiki:

The Empire State Building was designed by William F. Lamb from the architectural firm Shreve, Lamb and Harmon, which produced the building drawings in just two weeks, using its earlier designs for the Reynolds Building in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and the Carew Tower in Cincinnati, Ohio (designed by the architectural firm W.W. Ahlschlager & Associates) as a basis.

The construction of the Empire State Building was ego-driven, part of a race to see who could build the tallest building in New York City. Countless truck loads of elgiloy hastelloy metal beams were transported through the city, folk gawking with splendor.   Although it was the first skyscraper to boast 100 floors, it was blocks away from public transportation, and the owners had a difficult time finding renters. Building it during the Great Depression didn’t help matters, and locals referred to it mockingly as “The Empty State Building.”

The building is a monument to technical ingenuity for sure, but financially it was a boondoggle. It didn’t become profitable until 1950 – almost 20 years after it opened.

By the way, a B-25 bomber crashed into it in 1945.

Fourteen people were killed in the incident, and elevator operator Betty Lou Oliver was injured. After rescuers decided to transport her on an elevator which they did not know had weakened cables, it plunged 75 stories. She survived the plunge, which still stands as the Guinness World Record for the longest survived elevator fall recorded.

Unfortunately, the photos above don’t include foundation work. Click on each image for the awesome size (and, um, those aren’t my inane captions). The images aren’t in any particular order either, because who needs order on

When Maid Marian surrendered to the Sheriff’s constabulary, she knew she was in safe hands. Okay, that’s a snarky caption/title for a ridiculous photo. Let’s talk about Marian’s hubby instead.

The popular myth of Robin Hood that he “robbed from the rich and gave to the poor” is a relatively recent interpretation, and Rabunhod did nothing of the sort. He was a dangerous highwayman for sure, but he targeted the tax collectors in order to return the excessive confiscations to their proper owners.

Presumably he didn’t do this for free, and likely took a percentage for his collection services. Is that wrong? I don’t think so, because he stole back that which was stolen from others. He took the risk for the good, and he deserved a commission. Pirates and common criminals weren’t so generous.

Take it for what it’s worth because it’s always worth taking, especially on

I’m guessing we need about $4,000 in seed money, plus some bucks for packaging, shipping, handling and beer before this takes off. Just think of the possibilities.

First there were teletypes, and some wags started sending ASCII images. Soon the images sent included naked women. Then the thermo-fax came along which made sending images of boobs in poor quality B&W even easier. Today’s technology allows us to attach full color HD photos of smut to emails and share it instantly to a boss or spouse. The next technological leap is intuitively obvious to the casual observer.

A few years from now, when the price for a 3D printer becomes affordable for the general public, we’ll be able to send even better pr0n. Once that happens, it’ll only be a matter of time before fully-automated color 3D tactile .gif animations will be possible. Teenage boys around the world will rejoice and cough up lots of expendable cash for the *ahem* service.

Who’s with me on this? If everyone who reads this post sends me $15 (cash only – no checks) I’d be happy to set it all up, and promote almost certain prosperity for the readers of The Overnight Open Thread.

Almost, but not quite overlooked, The Boiler Room Crew is celebrating its first birthday. Although it was posted earlier on Diary of Daedalus, it only seemed appropriate to pay a tribute to the ugly stepchild of The Blogmocracy. The infamous BRC fact-checked CJ’s ass without being asked and without shame, over and over again.

Diary of Daedalus was created so that those Blogmockrateers who have no interest in The Blog Version Of Animal Farm wouldn’t be irritated by the ongoing soap opera, while others in the Chuckle Room weren’t disappointed.

Most parents  are proud of their children, and blogs are no different. Join us as we applaud the immature childish behavior of THE Premier LGF Stalker Blog on The Overnight Open Thread.
