Traditional Barber Shop

I like traditional barbershops. One of my earliest memories is sitting in Victor’s in Evendale, Ohio, with my dad. My choice of haircuts was limited, but I got to choose between a burr, a crewcut or a flat top, and I usually chose the latter.

Being allowed to choose is a big deal for a 5 years old, and after careful consideration, I usually ended up looking like this:

This place is a lot like an old-time barbershop. Visiting with the locals, drinking Barq’s Cream Soda, playing checkers, and trash talking anyone not around to defend themselves on The Overnight Open Thread.

EBO WALKER
Now Ebo Walker was born in Kentucky,
and raised by his daddy on a hillside farm,
He took up fiddle playing just for fun,

that’s the last work that Ebo Walker done.

Well Ebo Walker, he left Kentucky
’cause Ebo’s daddy said durn your hide,
You won’t plant corn, and you won’t make hay,
you sit on the porch and play that thing all day.

Well Ebo Walker, he walked and he fiddled and he walked and he fiddled and he fiddled till he died,

But I’ve heard tell when the winds is down and the moon shines bright, and the leaves are brown,
You can hear old Ebo fiddlin’ all around.

Some of the greatest scenes on The Andy Griffith show included “The Darling Boys.” They were a genuine bluegrass band from the Missouri Ozarks, known as The Dillards. During the bluegrass revival of the 1960s, they decided to move to where the recording studios were (Los Angeles) and set up shop outside the studios where they eventually got noticed.

Fun facts to know and tell, presented in the Classroom d’Retro of the College of Musical Knowledge, known locally as The Overnight Open Thread.

Wow! What a Shine!

“Oooh, my face looks like a hamster in the side of THIS pan!
Thank you, Prozac!”

From the amazing Plan59 comes this classic illustration, but I have a couple of problems with it. What bonehead decided to put a lamp post right next to the garage, and why is the car parked sideways in the driveway? And another thing –  she’s over 6 feet tall and her kitchen is being consumed by a mysterious white fungus.

Just one more example of the average American drug-addled lifestyle of the late ’50s, buffed and shined for The Overnight Open Thread.

I wish I could do that. The hottie, that is, but that would mean I’d have to travel decades back in time, and we’d all be little kids again. If that happened I’d have forgotten all about my purpose and likely grown up to make even worse mistakes than I have already.

Hell, if that happened, we prolly wouldn’t even be here on The Overnight Open Thread.
