Israeli Jewish leaders praise Pope Benedict

Despite being smeared as a Neo-Nazi and anti-Semite because he was in the Hitler youth, Israelis have a different take. They praise the Pope’s friendly relations with Israel and his work on achieving a historic accord between the Vatican and Israel which will be formalized once the new Israeli government is sworn in.

Tributes to Pope Benedict’s attitude and approach to the Jewish people and Israel during his tenure as the head of the Roman Catholic Church came quickly following his decision to resign on Monday.

The pontiff is widely seen as having helped promote relations between the Church and the Jewish people, and was ardent in his denunciations of anti-Semitism throughout his time as pope, condemning a resurgent form of anti-Semitism and deploring the phenomenon of Holocaust denial.

According to Shmuel Ben- Shmuel, head of the Foreign Ministry’s Department for the Diaspora and Religions, Benedict continued along the path of his predecessor John Paul in working toward the removal of theologically antagonistic doctrines held by the Church toward Jews.

[….]

Last month, significant progress was made in relations between Israel and the Vatican, which are now on the verge of formalizing diplomatic relations and were first opened in 1993.

The agreement will be fully ratified once a new Israeli government is formed.

Ben-Shmuel also noted that Benedict was the first pope to openly criticize radical Islam, a move that sparked outrage and intense criticism from the Muslim world.

[….]

Sephardi Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar said that Benedict should be particularly remembered for saying that God never abandoned his covenant with the Jewish people, and that Jews were Christians’ “older brothers” and “ancestors.” Amar also praised his strong stance and battle against all forms of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial.

Rabbi David Rosen, the honorary adviser to the Chief Rabbinate on interfaith matters, described Benedict as a friend to the Jewish people who had worked toward improving relations, with a stance the pope had publicly emphasized in his visit to Israel and on other occasions.

Hopefully the next Pope continues solidifying relations between Israel and the Catholic Church. Both are facing existential threats at the hands of the Progressive-Islam Axis.

Christians are being ‘emptied from the Middle East’

The Australian has the story:

Mother Agnès-Mariam de la Croix
Mother Agnès-Mariam de la Croix

By Rowan Callick, October 6, 2012

The mother superior of a 1500-year-old monastery in Syria warned yesterday during a visit to Australia that the uprising against Bashar al-Assad has been hijacked by foreign Islamist mercenaries, with strong support from Western countries.

Mother Agnes-Mariam de la Croix was forced to flee to neighbouring Lebanon in June when she was warned of a plot to abduct her, after she revealed that about 80,000 Christians had been “cleared” by rebel forces from their homes in Homs province.

She described on the website of the Greek-Melkite Catholic monastery of St James, the church she rebuilt 18 years ago after discovering it in ruins, how Islamist rebels had gathered Christian and Alawi hostages in a building in Khalidiya in Homs. Then they blew it up with dynamite and attributed the act to the regular army.

Mother Agnes-Mariam plans to return to Syria soon, to support the Mussalaha (Reconciliation) community-based movement, which rejects sectarian violence and includes, she said, members of all ethnic and religious communities who are tired of war.

Rallies with the theme “Hands Off Syria” are scheduled for lunchtime tomorrow in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Hobart, and will involve a wide variety of groups from the country.

Mother Agnes-Mariam, 60, speaks five languages fluently and spent 22 years as a contemplative Carmelite nun in Lebanon, where she was born. Her late father was a Palestinian refugee who fled Nazareth in 1948 when the state of Israel was established.

She told The Weekend Australian, while visiting Melbourne yesterday – between meetings with Catholic Archbishop Denis Hart and state parliamentarians – that after the uprising began, she had noticed growing numbers of “aggressive, armed gangs which wished to paralyse community life, abducting people, beheading, bringing terror even to schools”.

Slowly these groups became identified: some are recruited by and affiliated with al-Qa’ida, some have a Muslim Brotherhood background, some are attached to other Islamist factions. Only about one in 20 of these fighters is Syrian, she said. The rest come from places ranging from Britain to Pakistan, from Chechnya to North Africa. “Many have fought in Iraq, some also in Afghanistan,” Mother Agnes-Mariam said. “Now their cause is being recycled to kill Syrians.”

The two million Christians in Syria – which contains the world’s first church – “are sharing Syria’s fate”, she said.

“But as a minority, they are more vulnerable. They have no army. They are caught, like the filling in a sandwich.”

Her own community of nuns at St James has been mostly trapped in the monastery for 18 months.

In the beginning, she said, the uprising embraced values including freedom and democracy. “But it steadily became a violent Islamist expression against a liberal secular society.”

She described “a hidden will to empty the Middle East of its Christian presence. We don’t know why. We have always been the peaceful catalyst bringing diverse communities together.”

The American Pharaoh targets Vatican City

The American Pharaoh continues his war on the Catholic Church.  The US State Department is now labeling the Vatican City a money laundering risk. They allow Jihadi linked Islamic charities to operate unimpeded, yet they are concerned about Vatican City.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Obama administration is for the first time citing Vatican City as a potential hub for money laundering.

The State Department’s annual International Narcotics Control Strategy Report released Wednesday identifies the Holy See as one of 68 countries or jurisdictions “of concern” for money laundering or other financial crimes. Officials said the Vatican is on the list because it isn’t clear whether a year-old anti-money laundering regime is effective.

Is this the evil Papist plot Charles Johnson is always worrying about? The American Pharaoh is emulating his Egyptian predecessors. He is targeting people of God, in this case Catholics, to increase his power. The Catholic Church is a potential road block for The Pharaoh. So he has targeted it for remove as an obstacle. Plus to paraphrase Stalin, how many divisions does the Pope have?

Pope’s grave mistake

AS a Serbian-American who lost some 100 relatives during the genocide of Serbian Orthodox Christians in the “independent” state of Croatia during WWII, I write to protest the visit of Pope Benedict to the tomb of Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac.

I also must ask when the Vatican and the Croatian Catholic Church will acknowledge and apologise for their roles in the mass murder and ethnic cleansing of millions of Serbs, Jews, and gypsies. Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac, as leader of the Croatian Catholic Church, if nothing else, did not openly condemn this genocide, but silently condoned it. Pope Benedict should not have visited his grave as this will forever drive a wedge between Orthodox Christians and Catholics.

1389AD says:

Not being Catholic, I do not ordinarily consider it my place to tell the Catholic Church what to do. But I draw the line at beatifying someone who was, for all intents and purposes, a Nazi war criminal. I ask the Catholic Church to repudiate any association with the Nazi sympathizers and outright Nazis among its hierarchy in Croatia and the Balkans.
