One Little Kiss

One little kiss earned two friends room and board for a month for the low price of $250.  Unfortunately they can’t stay in the same room or visit each other during this time, and, um, it’s an offer that they’re not allowed to refuse.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) – A Dubai appeals court on Sunday upheld a one-month prison sentence for a British couple convicted of kissing in a restaurant.

The pair landed in court after an Emirati woman complained about the public kiss, which the couple insisted was just a peck on the cheek. They were arrested in November and convicted of inappropriate behavior and illegal drinking.

Cosmopolitan Dubai has the most relaxed social codes in the conservative Gulf, but authorities enforce strict decency laws and regularly crack down on people accused of pushing the limits, which can include everything from wearing a mini skirt to losing one’s temper in traffic.[Source]

One little kiss and Sharia don’t like it. On the bright side, the couple was granted 30 days to appeal their sentence to a higher court.

Obama vs. Sarkozy over burka

Obama and French President Sarkozy are on a collision course over the issue of banning Burkas. France is looking into banning this symbol of Islamic supremacy. Obama has sated it is his duty to defend Muslims and their interests. This article gives a good analysis of this divergence over the whole issue.

In his June speech in Cairo, U. S. President Barack Obama said that Westerners should “avoid dictating what clothes a Muslim woman should wear.” On the other hand, French President Nicolas Sarkozy says that burkas and niqabs, both of which cover the face, are a “debasement” of women and shouldn’t be permitted in France.

So who’s right?

I stand with the French on this one.

Is Obama supporting Sharia Law in America?

I have just finished reading this article.   To my knowledge in Sharia law Muslims are supposed to give zakat.  This is supposed to be money for charity.  This sounds good, but under Islamic law it is mandatory.

US Muslims: Obama speech a 1st step in fixing ties

CHICAGO (AP) – Muslim cabbies who gathered at a 24-hour Chicago cafe moments after daybreak Thursday to watch President Barack Obama’s address from Egypt described his words as an important first step toward repairing the United States’ strained relations with Muslims.

“A single speech is not going to make things better, it takes time,” said Syed Mehdi, a manager at the Flaming Wok’n Grill on the city’s north side, where a handful of taxi drivers gathered over chai to watch the speech broadcast live from Cairo University. “He’s trying to build bridges. He’s trying to be the cure to the damage and wounds that happened after 9-11.”

This is what bothers me:

During the speech, Obama emphasized Muslims’ importance in American history and his commitment to addressing American laws that make it difficult for U.S. Muslims to pay zakat—a religious obligation to donate to charity.

Why would American laws make it hard to give to charity. In fact tax laws encourage this.  Something is not right here.  Let us discuss what is meant by this.

Update: The consensus is that Obama is referring to making it easier for Islamic charities to operate.  As we know these charities are fronts for terrorists.  Either way this is bad development.

Sharia Courts in Britain

Sharia courts now have the power of law in Britain: Revealed: UK’s first official sharia courts.

ISLAMIC law has been officially adopted in Britain, with sharia courts given powers to rule on Muslim civil cases.

The government has quietly sanctioned the powers for sharia judges to rule on cases ranging from divorce and financial disputes to those involving domestic violence. Rulings issued by a network of five sharia courts are enforceable with the full power of the judicial system, through the county courts or High Court. Previously, the rulings of sharia courts in Britain could not be enforced, and depended on voluntary compliance among Muslims.

It has now emerged that sharia courts with these powers have been set up in London, Birmingham, Bradford and Manchester with the network’s headquarters in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Two more courts are being planned for Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Sheikh Faiz-ul-Aqtab Siddiqi, whose Muslim Arbitration Tribunal runs the courts, said he had taken advantage of a clause in the Arbitration Act 1996.
