In a huge blow to Iran’s Shia crescent, Ramadi which is the capital of Anbar province has fallen to the Islamic State (ISIS) which is composed of a coalition of Iraqi Baathists and foreign Jihadists.
Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) jihadists have raised their black flag over the provincial government compound in the city of Ramadi in western Iraq on Friday.
The insurgents attacked Ramadi overnight using six suicide car bombs to reach the city centre, where the Anbar governorate compound is located, police sources said.
Ramadi has been contested since last year but the insurgents renewed their offensive on the city in April, gaining ground to the north and east, and launched a fierce assault overnight on Friday.
Seizing the compound gives them nearly full control over Anbar’s provincial capital, the group and officials said.
The jihadists seized the government complex at around 2:00 pm (1100 GMT) and raised the IS’s black flag, capping an offensive launched on Thursday, a police officer said.
Many thought when Iranian led forces assisted by US air power took Tikrit, that ISIS was finished. Events in the last week disprove that as ISIS now controls parts of Palmyra in Syria and now the capital of Anbar province in Iraq. Make no mistake, this is a huge blow towards Tehran and their Shiite puppets.
