The brains behind ISIS: 100 Saddam era officers

The success of the Islamic state against the Iraqi Shiites, Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, Hezbollah and the Syrian Army over the past two years has caught many analysts off guard. Recently many journalists and researchers began to uncover the facts that ISIS is really a combination of Iraqi Baathists, Arab Sunni Jihadists and Chechens.

As ISIS overran the Sunni heartland of Iraq, they installed ex Baathists into position of power in the towns they took. This was no coincidence as the brains behind ISIS are over 100 Saddam era Iraqi army officers. This has given the Islamic State an advantage over its adversaries and making them way more dangerous than al-Qaeda or Hezbollah ever was.

Saddam

al-Baghdadi

Once part of one of the most brutal dictator’s army in the Middle East, over 100 former members of Saddam Hussein’s military and intelligence officers are now part of ISIS.

Now they make up the complex network of ISIS’s leadership, helping to build the military strategies which have led the brutal jihadi group to their military gains in Syria and Iraq.

The officers gave ISIS the organization and discipline it needed to weld together jihadi fighters drawn from across the globe, integrating terror tactics like suicide bombings with military operations.

Patrick Skinner, a former CIA case officer who has served in Iraq, said Saddam-era military and intelligence officers were a ‘necessary ingredient’ in the Islamic State group’s stunning battlefield successes last year, accounting for its transformation from a ‘terrorist organization to a proto-state.’

‘Their military successes last year were not terrorist, they were military successes,’ said Skinner, now director of special projects for The Soufan Group, a private strategic intelligence services firm.

The group’s second-in-command, al-Baghdadi’s deputy, is a former Saddam-era army major, Saud Mohsen Hassan, known by the pseudonyms Abu Mutazz and Abu Muslim al-Turkmani, according to the intelligence chief.

Hassan also goes by Fadel al-Hayali, a fake name he used before the fall of Saddam, the intelligence chief, who spoke under the condition of anonymity to The Associated Press.

[….]

‘IS’s military performance has far exceeded what we expected. The running of battles by the veterans of the Saddam military came as a shock,’ a brigadier general in military intelligence told the AP, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive topic.

‘Security-wise, we are often left unable to know who replaces who in the leadership. We are unable to infiltrate the group. It is terrifying.’

Estimates of the number of Saddam-era veterans in IS ranks vary from 100 to 160 in mostly mid- and senior-level positions, according to the officials.

Typically, they hail from Sunni-dominated areas, with intelligence officers mostly from western Anbar province, the majority of army officers from the northern city of Mosul and members of security services exclusively from Saddam’s clan around his hometown of Tikrit, said Big. Gen. Abdul-Wahhab al-Saadi, a veteran of battles against IS north and west of Baghdad.

For example, a former brigadier general from Saddam-era special forces, Assem Mohammed Nasser, also known as Nagahy Barakat, led a bold assault in 2014 on Haditha in Anbar province, killing around 25 policemen and briefly taking over the local government building.

Many of the Saddam-era officers have close tribal links to or are the sons of tribal leaders in their regions, giving IS a vital support network as well as helping recruitment.

These tribal ties are thought to account, at least in part, for the stunning meltdown of Iraqi security forces when IS captured the Anbar capital of Ramadi in May.

Several of the officers interviewed by the AP said they believe IS commanders persuaded fellow tribesmen in the security forces to abandon their positions without a fight.

Skinner, the former CIA officer, noted the sophistication of the Saddam-era intelligence officers he met in Iraq and the intelligence capabilities of IS in Ramadi, Mosul and in the group’s de facto capital of Raqqa in Syria.

‘They do classic intelligence infiltration. They have stay-behind cells, they actually literally have sleeper cells,’ Skinner said.

Despite being stopped cold by the Kurds, in Iraq and Syria, the Islamic State continues to advance against Assad’s forces. They have recently took the village al-Qaryatayn in Homs which puts them 30 miles to the Lebanese border and potentially cut off Assad’s forces in northern Syria and threaten Hezbollah’s heartland in the Bekaa valley.

The Islamic State is a just a rebranded version of the Iraqi Baathist party.

What’s going on in Boston?

2 years ago, Hipster icons the Tsarnaev brothers attacked the Boston marathon. It tuns out they were linked to a radical mosque in that town. Now another Jihadi related incident has occurred in Boston. Boston Police attempted to arrest Usaama Rahim for his involvement in a potential terror attack. He charged at the cops with Knife and was rightfully shot as a result.  Now an associate of Rhaim, David Wright has been arrested and also accused of being linked to ISIS.

A Massachusetts man is in custody in connection with Tuesday’s shooting of a man police say was radicalized by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) propaganda, reports CBS News correspondent Jeff Pegues.

Police led the man, David Wright, out of an Everett home late Tuesday, linking his arrest to the terror investigation of Usaama Rahim.

Just 14 miles away, investigators say, Rahim had pulled out a knife and waved it at officers in Boston. Moments later, police fired, shooting and killing him. He was under 24-hour surveillance at the time he was killed.

[….]

Federal law enforcement sources say Rahim had been on joint terrorism task force radar for several months, but in recent weeks they began tracking him around the clock.

Sources tell CBS News Rahim and Wright were communicating with each other about attacks in the U.S., which is why Wright was arrested. Authorities continue to search for other people both Rahim and Wright were communicating with, the sources say.

Wright is expected to appear in federal court in Boston Wednesday, according to Christina Sterling, a spokesperson for U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz.

In the aftermath of the failed attack in Garland, Texas, the FBI increased surveillance and investigations of closed cases and perceived low priority threats.

Recent intelligence bulletins have warned about homegrown violent extremists influenced by ISIS’ online propaganda, which has been urging attacks against law enforcement and military targets.

First the Tsarnaevs and now the incident involing Usaama Rahim. What is going on in the city Boston, that these Jihadists are located there? I suspect the Islamic Society of Boston is a Jihadi front group and helping to encourage these incidents. Kudos to Boston PD for killing this Jihadist savage.

ISIS kills Hamas Commander

About a month ago, when ISIS took over the Yarmouk Palestinian camp in Syria, many wondered how that organization reached an area that was surrounded by the Syrian Army/Hezbollah on one end and Nusra Front/Free Syrian Army on the other end. It turns out the ISIS militants were actually Hamas fighters who switched allegiance . This scenario may play out in Gaza in the coming months.

Over the last several months, various Hamas fighters have tweeted out pictures of themselves with posters saying they are awaiting the orders of the Caliph. Hamas has been going after people who openly support ISIS in fears of a coup. The Islamic State has struck in Gaza by killing a Hamas commander.

Terrorists claiming loyalty to the Islamic State group took responsibility for the assassination of a Hamas commander in Gaza Sunday. The Army of the Islamic State said it placed a bomb in a vehicle belonging to Saber Siam and detonated it, broadcaster Arutz Sheva reported.

There is no love lost between the two militant organizations. The Islamic State group, also known as ISIS, considers Hamas “heretical,” accusing the group of conducting a war on religion. ISIS has warned Hamas to “end its war against religion in Gaza” or “face the consequences,” Arutz Sheva said.

Residents of Gaza have been warned to stay away from government offices. Arutz Sheva, however, said it was unable to verify whether the Army of the Islamic State actually is an ISIS affiliate, but Israeli sources told the broadcaster a group of Salafist rebels is trying to take over Gaza.

[….]

The escalating battle between ISIS and Hamas has led to a development unthinkable just a few months ago: Hamas and Israel are working toward the same goal. During the mosque raid, Hamas also arrested several members of Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, an Egyptian militant group that last year became ISIS’ first branch outside of Iraq and Syria.

“In the light of Hamas’ new crackdown, we renew our loyalty to [ISIS Caliph Abu Bakr] al-Baghdadi and call on him to strengthen his influence and to launch a campaign in Palestine,” said a statement from Supporters of the Islamic State released after the destruction of the mosque.

This is situation that bears watching. If ISIS takes over Gaza, this will put the Progressive movement in a quandary. They have made ISIS to be a boogeyman becasue that organization is preventing Iranian control of the Mideast, but the Left hates Israel. If ISIS and Israel went at it, who would Progressives root for?

The JV squad aka the Islamic State captures Ramadi

In a huge blow to Iran’s Shia crescent, Ramadi which is the capital of Anbar province has fallen to the Islamic State (ISIS) which is composed of a coalition of Iraqi Baathists and foreign Jihadists.

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) jihadists have raised their black flag over the provincial government compound in the city of Ramadi in western Iraq on Friday.

The insurgents attacked Ramadi overnight using six suicide car bombs to reach the city centre, where the Anbar governorate compound is located, police sources said.

Ramadi has been contested since last year but the insurgents renewed their offensive on the city in April, gaining ground to the north and east, and launched a fierce assault overnight on Friday.

Seizing the compound gives them nearly full control over Anbar’s provincial capital, the group and officials said.

The jihadists seized the government complex at around 2:00 pm (1100 GMT) and raised the IS’s black flag, capping an offensive launched on Thursday, a police officer said.

Many thought when Iranian led forces assisted by US air power took Tikrit, that ISIS was finished. Events in the last week disprove that as ISIS now controls parts of Palmyra in Syria and now the capital of Anbar province in Iraq. Make no mistake, this is a huge blow towards Tehran and their Shiite puppets.

May the ISIS vs. Iran death match continue!
