Pittsburgh voted as having the worst accent Updated: Monday, October 20 2014, 08:31 AM CDT By: KDKA-TV PITTSBURGH — The city known for steel, Super Bowl rings and repeatedly hailed as one of the best places to live has a more nefarious title: ugliest accent in America. Yinz might disagree, but Gawker’s “America’s Ugliest Accent” poll closed with Pittsburgh taking 54.32 percent of the vote. The Steel City won the title over Scranton, which had 45.68 percent of the vote. According to the website, 19,000 people voted in the final round. The NCAA-style bracket started several weeks ago with 16 cities around the country, including Pittsburgh, Scranton and Philadelphia. Pittsburgh also beat out Atlanta, Philly and Boston before taking the title.
After weeks of close contests and national debate, the fraught competition to decide America’s ugliest accent has finally come to a dramatic close. And the winner is that moonlit, magical city—the Paris of Allegheny County, the Venice of the Ohio Valley—Pittsburgh, City of Jagoffs.
By some unusual providence, our two finalists—Pittsburgh and Scranton—were from the stretch of land between Ohio and New Jersey that we call Penn’s Woods. The western steel town of Pittsburgh managed to make it out of the woods alive with the bloody body of Scranton in its raw mitt.
