Napolitano Stabs Charles Johnson in the Back

That small crackling sound you hear is thousands of teeny, tiny heads exploding over at LGF 1.0.  Why?  Because Janet Napolitano just shot down Charlie’s entire “violent right-wing extremists are everywhere” meme.  Recent Murders Don’t Sway Napolitano on DHS Report.

Hat tip – gclaghorn

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said she doesn’t think the recent murder of Dr. George Tiller, a late-term abortion provider, and the shooting of a security guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum vindicate a controversial Department of Homeland Security report issued to law enforcement about rising right-wing extremism.

The shootings were not evidence of growing violent political extremism in the United States, Napolitano said at a Thursday press briefing in Washington. “I don’t look at those murders as anything other than terrible crimes and tragedies,” Napolitano said. Stepping up her criticism of the report, Napolitano added, “I do think, as I’ve said before, that the so-called right-wing extremist report was not a well-produced product. It could and should have been done better. We’ve already taken steps within the department to improve that situation.” She did not elaborate.

Released in April, the report from the department’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis warned law enforcement that white-power militias and other right-wing extremist groups might exploit the economic downturn and the election of the nation’s first African-American president. Conservative groups immediately denounced the report, contending it insufficiently distinguished mainstream political opinions on the right from incitements to violence.

Napolitano added a limited defense of the report for placing a warning about so-called “lone wolf” attacks — in which assailants who might be motivated by political extremism to commit acts of violence without detectable signs of supporting networks that can alert law enforcement to an impending crime — within an economic context. “The right-wing report correctly identified that the circumstances in the United States now, the down economy and the like, historically are the types of circumstances that can give rise to this type of activity,” she said. “That’s why it was pointing that out for local law enforcement.”

Sheesh, didn’t she get Charlie’s memo?

Seriously, though, the highlighted part really is the crux of the matter.  Nobody denies that there are always kooks, losers, yahoos, and violent nutcases out there on all ends of the political spectrum.  Charles – with his spate of posts about loner nutcases killing illegal immigrants notwithstanding – hasn’t made his case at all.  There is no evidence of any vast right-wing conspiracy out there.  There’s no evidence of a concerted effort by “conservatives” to recruit terrorists because America now “has a black President.”   Indeed, the whole reason why conservatives were so offended by the report is exactly what the article said – there is a WORLD of difference between mainstream pro-lifers, and loner nutcases who shoot abortion doctors.  There’s a WORLD of difference between people who think we should end illegal immigration, and nutcases who shoot illegal immigrants.  There’s a WORLD of difference between people who grumble about paying their taxes, and people who plot to blow up IRS offices.

The fact that Charles is either too stupid or too blinkered by ideology and a penchant for yellow journalism to recognise this shows again why LGF 1.0 is fast sliding into the oblivion of irrelevancy.

LGF Cult Leader defends smear of Veterans

Chuckles Nancy is at it again. Now he is claiming  the DHS report is not aimed at all vets. When it clearly mentions Veterans as possible threats. Charles really goes out of his way here to defend the DHS report.

FBI Extremist Probe and Veterans

The revelation that the FBI’s investigation of white supremacists and militia groups included a focus on veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan has prompted another round of outrage from the right wing blogosphere and talk radio—who seem completely unwilling to admit there could be a point to the investigation, and instead are distorting the situation into an “investigation of all veterans.” Which it is not.

Disclosure of the DHS memo this week has sparked controversy among some conservatives and veterans groups. Appearing on television talk shows Thursday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano defended the assessment, but apologized to veterans who saw it as an accusation.

“This is an assessment of things just to be wary of, not to infringe on constitutional rights, certainly not to malign our veterans,” she said on NBC’s Today Show.

The documents outlining Operation Vigilant Eagle cite a surge in activity by such groups. The memos say the FBI’s focus on veterans began as far back as December, during the final weeks of the Bush administration, when the bureau’s domestic counterterrorism division formed a special joint working group with the Defense Department.

A Feb. 23 draft memo from FBI domestic counterterrorism leaders, obtained by The Wall Street Journal, cited an “increase in recruitment, threatening communications and weapons procurement by white supremacy extremist and militia/sovereign-citizen extremist groups.”

The FBI said in the memo that its conclusion about a surge in such activities was based on confidential sources, undercover operations, reporting from other law-enforcement agencies and publicly available information. The memo said the main goal of the multipronged operation was to get a better handle on “the scope of this emerging threat.” The operation also seeks to identify gaps in intelligence efforts surrounding these groups and their leaders.

The aim of the FBI’s effort with the Defense Department, which was rolled into the Vigilant Eagle program, is to “share information regarding Iraqi and Afghanistan war veterans whose involvement in white supremacy and/or militia sovereign citizen extremist groups poses a domestic terrorism threat,” according to the Feb. 23 FBI memo.

Michael Ward, FBI deputy assistant director for counterterrorism, said in an interview Thursday that the portion of the operation focusing on the military related only to veterans who draw the attention of Defense Department officials for joining white-supremacist or other extremist groups.

“We’re not doing an investigation into the military, we’re not looking at former military members,” he said. “It would have to be something they were concerned about, or someone they’re concerned is involved” with extremist groups. Mr. Ward said that the FBI’s general counsel reviewed the operation before it began, “to make sure any tripwires we set do not violate any civil liberties.”

If I honestly believed the FBI and DHS were focusing suspicion on all veterans, I’d be yelling about this louder than the demagogues are yelling now. But until I see some evidence that the focus is overly broad, I can’t join the chorus.

Charles is lying and covering up for Napolitano’s anti Vet report. The idea that Vets are more likely to join extremist groups is ridiculous. Hey why aren’t Muslim immigrants mentioned as possible terrorists? Why is the Right now considered a threat? Charles won’t address this, instead he attacks those of us that stand up for Vets. Chuckles clearly has no respect for our military, he is a Globalist Liberal Fascist.
