Truths We Dare Not Speak

Victor Davis Hanson – whose columns used to be a staple on another blog (but not any more) – cuts through the dogma, political correctness, and pseudo intellectual claptrap to speak truth to issues that too many people are afraid to confront. Immigration, Middle East, Iraq,  Ivy League education, affirmative action etc. are all subjects where the accepted mantra should no longer go unchallenged. I particularly enjoyed his take down of the Middle East as being the most “important” crisis in the world.

by Victor Davis Hanson

There are a number of things we simply no longer talk about. The silence is partly due to intellectual laziness. Or maybe it is because of political correctness—or even attributable to ignorance and the absence of curiosity.

In no particular order, I list five propositions that simply have become taboo.

1). Illegal Immigration and California.

There are dozens of recent exposés on the California mess. The “I accuse” themes—all quite accurate—are well known.

2) Iraq.

We are tired of Iraq and have Trotskyized it out of our existence, given the huge cost and 4,000 dead.

But consider: not a single America died in Iraq in December (38 murdered in Chicago during that period); three have been lost this month (24 murdered so far this month in Chicago).

Some random thoughts. The surge was a brilliant success.

A Harry Reid (“the war is lost”) or Barack Obama (out of Iraq by March 2008 and the surge “is not working”) have never subsequently suggested that they were wrong at a time when our troops desperately were trying against all odds to save the fragile country.

————————————————–

3) Affirmative Action.

The concept was noble, but now antiquated and mostly absurd. It requires the logic of the Old Confederacy to determine racial purity among the intermarried citizenry. Jet-black Punjabis get no preferences. Light-skinned Mexican-Americans of the fourth-generation claim privilege. Poor whites from Tulare don’t rank. The children of black dentists do. I see very little logic here.

Asians? We both claim them as minorities, and yet we discriminate against them at the University of California admissions process on the basis of their own superior achievement.

————————————————–

4) The Ivy League is a Naked Emperor.

By Ivy League I do not mean just Harvard, Princeton, and Yale, but the entire concept of high-priced elite schools like a Stanford, Duke, or Columbia as well. We know a BA from such institutions does not ipso facto any longer, as it once may well have, guarantee knowledge or competence. We know the race/class/gender craze has watered down the curriculum, and ensured therapy and empathy trump recall of facts and adherence to the inductive method.

————————————————–

5) The “Middle East” is a Fraud

Why do we beat ourselves up over Israel and the Palestinians? Why not occupied Cyprus? Or the Kuriles? Or South Ossetia? Or the divided city of Nicosia?  Is there a “Falklands Question”?

Why are not Germans blowing themselves up in Gdansk, the former East Prussia, the Alsace, or old Silesia to recover “lost” land?

Were there no Israeli-Arab wars before the “occupation” of 1967? Does anyone think that, should the West Bank simply take a 30-year break from the violence, emulate Western business and government, draw in Gulf capital, a few thousands acres here or there would then be still be relevant?

Islamists Erase Jewish Identity from Ezekiel’s Tomb in Iraq

Although I still support the U.S. and coalition forces decision to liberate the people of Iraq from Saddam Hussein, and protect us from what then was an understandable fear of weapons of mass destruction, this was not what I would have expected would be the outcome of our effort.

As is unfortunately typical of Islam, they are once again taking over a Jewish holy site, erasing any connection to its Jewish roots, and turning it into a Mosque.

NEW YORK (December 29, 2009) – The Iraqi news agency Ur News has revived fears that under pressure from Islamic political parties, the original Hebrew inscriptions and ornamentation on the walls around the tomb of Ezekiel are being (or have been) removed, this under the pretext of restoring the site. According to sources, the Antiquities and Heritage Authority in Iraq has been pressured by Islamists to historically cleanse all evidence of a Jewish connection to Iraq–a land where Jews had lived for over a thousand years before the advent of Islam.

Four months ago a German-based Iraqi journalist tipped off the Association of Jewish Academics from Iraq in Israel that plans were afoot to build a mosque on the site of the shrine of the Jewish prophet Ezekiel at al-Kifl…. The rumours were investigated by a philo-Semitic Iraqi Shi’a, Dr. Jabbar Jamal al-Din, a lecturer in Jewish Thought at the Kufa University.  They were denied by the shrine’s director.  Now a report by Ur News revives fears that in the absence of Jews on the ground, nothing, not even UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), stands in the way of politically-motivated plans to erase all Jewish traces of this ancient holy site.

Drastic changes taking place currently at the tomb of Ezekiel will change its character and prompt UNESCO to delete it as a protected site on the World Heritage List, similar to what happened to the historic city of Babylon, where old buildings were demolished and new layers of construction added.

Hebrew writings will or already has been erased from the site and from the room that houses the shrine. Restoration work includes skimming the walls, 3 metres high in the yard, 2 metres high inside the shrine. Sources say that the media are not allowed to take pictures and visits to the shrine are limited to pilgrims.

Iraq – the Biblical Mesopotamia -is almost as rich in Jewish history as the Land of Israel. The tomb of the prophet Ezekiel dates back to the Babylonian exile in the sixth century BCE. It was there in Iraq that Abraham discovered monotheism, and it is where the prophets Ezra, Nehemiah, Nahum, Jonah and Daniel are all buried.

US soldier guns down 5 fellow soldiers in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) – A U.S. soldier opened fire at a counseling center on a U.S. base Monday, killing five fellow soldiers before being taken into custody, the U.S. command and Pentagon officials said. The shooting occurred at Camp Liberty, a sprawling U.S. base on the western edge of Baghdad near the city’s international airport and adjacent to another facility where President Barack Obama visited last month.

Is this a case of sudden Jihad syndrome? Not much information has been revealed but my heart goes out to the victim’s families.

Iraq deteriorating as Pro US Militias begin rejoining the insurgency

Another example of why Muslims can’t be trusted. Gen. Petraeus started the Sons of Iraq Militias to get Sunnis in Iraq to fight AL-Qaeda. It worked but when the US gave responsibility to the Iraqi government, The Shiite led government stopped paying the SOI and arresting its leaders. It also didn’t integrate them into their security forces like they promised the Americans. Now the violence is back.

Iraq bloodshed rises as US allies defect

IRAQ is threatened by a new wave of sectarian violence as members of the “Sons of Iraq” – the Sunni Awakening militias that were paid by the US to fight Al-Qaeda – begin to rejoin the insurgency.

If the spike in violence continues, it could affect President Barack Obama’s pledge to withdraw all combat troops from Iraqi cities by the end of June. All US troops are due to leave the country by 2012.

A leading member of the Political Council of Iraqi Resistance, which represents six Sunni militant groups, said: “The resistance has now returned to the field and is intensifying its attacks against the enemy. The number of coalition forces killed is on the rise.”

This is another example of  why it makes no sense to try to build a democracy in the Muslim world. They don’t compromise and turn on each other. Invading Iraq was a mistake. I am for leveling the whole place and leaving. Turn it back to a desert and leave them up to their own devises. We should do the same in Afghanistan, we need to level it and leave. I am sick of us trying to help Muslims, let them all destroy each other.
