John Conyers May Retire!

by Deplorable Macker ( 3 Comments › )
Filed under Democratic Party, Election 2014, Headlines at May 10th, 2014 - 11:29 am

And it could be that it may not be of his own volition! Imagine that!
From WDIV-TV Detroit:

DETROIT – Congressman John Conyers’ effort to win a 26th term in the U.S. House may have hit a huge setback Friday as a preliminary report from the Wayne County Clerk’s Office says Conyers did not collect enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot.
According to the report, Conyers has only 592 valid signatures–more than 400 short of the 1,000 required to make the primary ballot. (My emphasis – Ed.)

Please pardon me while I Roll On the Floor and Laugh My American Infidel Ass Off!

And it gets even better. According to Local 4, one of his petition collectors is allegedly not registered to vote in Michigan…and may have also violated his probation!

At the center of Conyers’ petition debacle is Daniel Pennington, who was hired to collect signatures for the congressman.
Local 4 spoke with Pennington on the phone Friday: “I violated my probation, yes, BUT I’m in the process of handling that though with my lawyer and my mother.”

While Pennington’s criminal history looks bad politically, the fact that he apparently wasn’t registered to vote, required by Michigan law for petition gatherers, is more problematic for Conyers’ campaign.
However, Pennington claims records that do not show him as a registered voter are wrong.

“Yes, I registered to vote,” he said. “Yes, I sure did and I don’t know why they’re coming after me. I believe they’re using me as a scapegoat.”
Ultimately, though, Pennington’s voter status may not matter because he admits making untruthful statements on petition forms. Pennington told Local 4 that he never lived at the address listed as his residence on petitions forms. Still, he remains adamant that he did nothing wrong.
“I am a registered voter there,” he said. “As long as I am a registered at that address no matter if I move, say if I move, so long as I’m registered there I can still use that address.”

While Conyers’ faces the daunting task of running for re-election as a write-in, Pennington’s fate appears to be significantly more grim.
The Michigan Department of Corrections said Pennington could face between 17 months and 15 years in prison for violating his probation.

Why should Conyers care? He’s got his lifetime Congressional Pension all lined up and ready to go. With all those daunting tasks ahead to run as a write-in, perhaps he really will take the hint…and simply retire.

Federal judge rules in favor of Quran-burning pastor Terry Jones

3:33 PM, April 5, 2012
A federal judge ruled today in favor of Quran-burning pastor Terry Jones, saying he can protest this Saturday outside a Dearborn mosque without having to sign a legal agreement from the city of Dearborn.

U.S. District Judge Denise Page Hood ruled in favor of Jones, who intends to hold a protest against Islamic extremism at the biggest mosque in metro Detroit. The city of Dearborn has said it wanted Jones to sign a “hold harmless” agreement that would require the Florida pastor to forfeit all legal rights stemming from any possible incident at the planned protest.

Earlier this week, the Thomas More Law Center, a conservative Christian group in Ann Arbor, filed a lawsuit against the city on behalf of Jones, saying his constitutional rights were being attacked by the city because of the requirement to sign the “hold harmless” agreement.

Judge Hood said the requirement “violate the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.”

Richard Thompson, President and Chief Counsel of the Thomas Law Center said today in a statement about the judge’s ruling: “Dearborn has a history of discriminating against Christians who want to speak out against the internal threat of Sharia law and Islam. And every time the City attempts to curtail the Constitutional rights of Christians, we will confront them in a court of law. There is no doubt in my mind that the City knew the Hold Harmless agreement they were trying to get Jones’s organization to sign was unconstitutional.”

Michael Barone: The failure of the Michigan Economic Model

Since the new deal, the economic model of Big Companies, Unions and a regulated economy dominated the Midwest. The belief was that big companies can absorb the high costs of labor and regulations. As we have seen the last 11 years, that model has collapsed not only in the Midwest, but in the northeast and California. The higher costs pushed employers to relocate to the South or even out of the US.  The result has been an economic catastrophe with Detroit as the example of the failure of this economic model.

President Obama has kicked off a three-day bus tour of Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois, where the corn is high and at least some factories are spewing smoke. He’s holding town-hall meetings on the economy, putting the unemployed back to work and “growing wages for everyone.” He won these Midwestern states handily in 2008, but he’s not taking anything for granted these days. The Midwest is the region with the largest number of target states. The president’s latest Gallup job approval there is 39%, the same as the nation as a whole.

To understand the political economy of the Midwest, it helps to put it in historic perspective. Originally the Midwest’s economy was built on its farms, then later on its factories. The long farm-to-factory migration lasted from roughly 1890 to 1970. At the end of that period, when I was working on the first edition of “The Almanac of American Politics,” it seemed there were two models for the U.S. future. One was the Michigan model, which prevailed in the industrial Midwest and the factory towns of the Great Plains. The other was the Texas model, which prevailed in most of the South and Southwest.

The Michigan model was based on the Progressive/New Deal assumption that, after the transition from farm to factory, the best way to secure growth was through big companies and big labor unions.

[….]

Liberals assumed the Michigan model was the wave of the future, and that in time—once someone built big factories and unions organized them—backward states like Texas would catch up

[….]

History hasn’t worked out that way. In 1970, Michigan had nine million people. In 2010, it had 10 million. In 1970, Texas had 11 million people. In 2010, it had 25 million. In 1970, Detroit was the nation’s fifth-largest metro area. Today, metro Houston and the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex are both pressing the San Francisco Bay area for the No. 4 spot, and Detroit is far behind.

Adversarial unionism is one reason the Midwest slumped. It turns out that the 1970 assembly line, with union shop stewards always poised to shut it down, was not the highest stage of human economic development. When you make labor more expensive, you create incentives to invent new machines and create new jobs elsewhere. Foreign auto manufacturers built plants in a South recently freed from state-imposed racial segregation. With no adversarial unions, management and labor could collaborate and achieve quality levels the Big Three took decades to match.

The Michigan model is a failure. We need the Texas model of a friendly business environment, low regulations and lower tax rates across the nation. If not, America will turn into a national version of Detroit

Why Is Dearbornistan Overrun By Muslims?

Jihad Watch: Dearborn, Michigan – Muslims physically attack Christian groups

Excerpt:

The violent intimidation of anti-jihadists that I just saw in Stuttgart is coming to America. Authorities should act quickly and decisively to defend the freedom of speech, or it will most assuredly soon be gone. As Pamela Geller notes, these stories involve “two Christian groups, both under attack in a no-go zone zone in Dearborn, Michigan, in an increasingly sharia compliant America. Dearborn, the same city that refused to run my bus ads offering help to apostates (despite our win in the courts). On Friday, two separate groups were threatened and attacked because they came to Dearborn to stand for their beliefs. Whether you like their presentation or not is irrelevant. It’s free speech. Period.”

My comments:

Michigan can thank former Senator Spencer Abraham for the high Muslim population. Abraham said if he were to be reelected, he would increase the quota of Arabs coming from the Arab states, i.e., Muslims.

I have a copy of The American Muslim Council Report (AMC, of March 1996, where a whole page is dedicated to an interview with Spencer Abraham, who, by the way, is a Lebanese Orthodox Christian and supported Clinton in the war against the Serbs.) One question asked by AMC:

In which ways, if any, did the Muslim community play a role in your successful 1994 campaign for the U.S. Senate?

ABRAHAM: As you may know, I am very proud of my heritage and of the bipartisan support I received the American Muslim community during my Senate campaign. The community in Michigan and all over the United States encouraged and supported by candidacy–and for that I am grateful. I am working hard in the Senate to listen to the views of the Muslim community and to make sure that the community has a place to voice those concerns.

Abraham, if re-elected, said that he would increase the quota for Muslims to come to this country. Michigan has one of the biggest Muslim communities in the U.S. and one town now has call to prayer five times a day.

Getting back to AMC: Included in the report is a page devoted to Hillary Clinton with a portrait of her holding the Koran and words praising Islam. The Clintons were the first to invite the Muslims to celebrated their EID (after the month of fasting for Ramadan) at the White House. (See Friends of Hamas in the White House.)

Other AMC favorites were, Joe Lieberman, Congressman Tom Davis of Virginia, Congressman Dana Rohrabacher of California, and Congressman Frank Wolf of Virginia, and of course, this was just for this AMC issue.

BTW: Senator Spencer Abraham was defeated in his quest for re-election. Some of my Serbian friends may remember my crusade against the Senator. I hope that in some small way, I was responsible for that defeat.
