Happy New Years Yinz!

NCAA Football:

We are $1600/$1000 so far! I got all of the division championship games correct a couple weeks ago.

Saturday:

6 Georgia @ 5 Florida State 4:00 PM Capital One Orange Bowl: FSU is a 20 point dog, and they bitched that they didn’t get invited to the playoffs! I’m not touching this game.

MONDAY:

4 Alabama @ 1 Michigan 5:00 PM CFP Semifinal at the Rose Bowl: Coach Harbaugh from M has a TERRIBLE record in games yet M is a 2 point favorite against a peaking Nick Saban Alabama team, M does not cover.

3 Texas @ 2 Washington 8:45 PM CFP Semifinal at the Sugar Bowl: W is from the grossly and perpetually over-rated Pac-12. Texas is a 4 point favorite and covers.

Well I am sure the OSU Board of Trustees are still happy with their decision to suspend Urban Meyer, for a domestic dispute (which was dropped) by a fired staff member, from the first 3 games of 2018 leading to his decision to leave at the end of the season. Stupid decisions can have consequences that last all “Day” and night.

Well done OSU. Enjoy another Earl Bruce decade of being 8-3 every year and “almost” making the NC.

This is cute. The earliest recording I’ve seen of The Warning. A cover of Back in Black, with an 11 year old Pau singing lead. Dany was 13, and Ale was 9, playing a bass that was as big as she was:

So a half eaten rotisserie chicken was put back in its store packing and shoved to the back of the kitchen counter. Psycho Puppy got it down. No carcass, no nothing. Regular vet is closed, Animal Emergency said take her to Univ Tenn Vet, we’re full Finally got thru to poison control AND UT Vet and they both said, wait it out, we see this a lot. No food until tomorrow.

The good news is that she puked most of it up

Not as this will be much of a consolation but as we all know that chicken bones splinter and become sharp objects and that is the danger of dogs eating cooked chicken.

But, due to genetic selection and very selective breeding the chickens in 2023 are only about 5-6 weeks old when they become lunch or supper.

The bones are not fully calcified, in fact that is a problem with the modern chicken. It grows so fast the bones in the legs are sometimes not formed enough to hold the chicken’s weight.

Not like the old days when a chicken was six months old and bones fully calcified before it weighed enough to become part of a sammich.

    @ Possum:
I did a google thingy to back up my assertion.

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6771771/

Broiler chickens have an extreme physiology (rapid growth rates) that challenges the correct bone mineralization, being an interesting animal model for studying the development of bone pathologies. This work studies in detail how the mineralization, chemistry, and structural organization of tibiae bone in broiler chickens change with age during the first 5 wk (37 D) from hatching until acquiring the final weight for slaughter. During the early growth phase (first 2 wk), the rapid addition of bone tissue does not allow for bone organic matrix to fully mineralize and mature, and seems to be a critical period for bone development at which bone mineralization cannot keep pace with the rapid growth of bones. The low degree of bone mineralization and large porosity of cortical bone at this period might be responsible of leg deformation and/or other skeletal abnormalities commonly observed in these birds. Later, cortical bone porosity gradually decreases and the cortical bone became fully mineralized (65%) at 37 D of age. At the same time, bone mineral acquires the composition of mature bone tissue (decreased amount of carbonate, higher crystallinity, Ca/P = 1.68). However, the mineral part was still poorly organized even at 37 D. The oriented fraction was about 0.45 which means that more than half of apatite crystals within the mineral are randomly oriented. Mineral organization (crystal orientation) had an important contribution to bone-breaking strength. Nevertheless, locally determined (at tibia mid-shaft) bone properties (i.e., cortical thickness, crystal orientation) has only a moderate correlation (R2 = 0.33) with bone breaking strength probably due to large and highly heterogeneous porosity of bone that acts as structural defects. On the other hand, the total amount of mineral (a global property) measured by total ash content was the best predictor for breaking strength (R2 = 0.49). Knowledge acquired in this study could help in designing strategies to improve bone quality and reduce the incidence of skeletal problems in broiler chickens that have important welfare and economic implications.

I know I repeat myself on here and as you know I am an artist in the culinary cuisine shit and even though I just cook for myself some of the meals I make take days to eat.

Anyway, French onion soup. The Campbells condensed French onion soup is on my top ten list of shit in a can that is actually better than I could make by spending hours trying to make it.

Usually the Campbells soup says add a can of water. Supposed that is because it is condensed, one step above an MRE.

Normally any of those soups I only add half a can of water, or milk depending on the soup. BUT!!!!!!!

The French onion one add a full can of water otherwise it is too salty, and also a chunk of butter.

So there you have it. Possum 3 minute French onion soup!

On another topic this fireworks and noise and scaring my cats stuff needs to me regulated.

Years ago it used to be 12am or PM or whatever midnight is and that was it.

Last few years it is according to when midnight is in the countries the diversified population originated from

Started at 6pm Central time which is midnight UK time, YEAH GO BRITS!!!!

But no, that is west coast of Africa, Ireland, some long forgotten places in the south atlantic.

Then we had the 7pm flurry. Could be Portugal or the Canary Islands.

Currently 8pm and buggered if I know where these immigrants are from!

Well if this goes as usual celebrations will stop after 2am central. That is where midnight is in some south American countries.

Really glad there are no Australians living here, fucking fireworks would have woke me up early this morning.

There is a TV personality by the name of Mike Rowe.
He used to do a show called “Dirty Jobs,” in which he went and worked beside people doing various grungy blue-collar jobs—septic tank cleaning, various kinds of construction and trash pickup, etc., etc. In other words, all the stuff that our epicene college-educated nances know nothing about. His objective was to show both the difficulty and the importance of these jobs. He has done other television shows detailing the value and difficulty of, for want of a better term, Real Work—and he has made various intermittent statements regarding the value of such work and the need for the gelded Eloi Class of collegiate types to learn something about the nature of such work—something that I myself have observed firsthand, in that I’ve repeatedly dealt with people of college-educated background who do not know how a thermostat works and are unsure as to which end of the hammer you use.

Thus, I have called such summonses to common sense and basic technical competence microaggressions Mike Rowe aggressions.

All the people who want to “regulate the planetary climate” and demand the power and unlimited resources to do so are people who have proven themselves incapable of competently managing and running recently-built, closed, man-made systems.

They cannot competently run power grids, or municipal water systems or trash pickup; they cannot competently maintain, let alone repair, the “roads and bridges” they are always prating about; they cannot competently run or maintain the public housing they increasingly want people to live in, or the public transportation systems that they want people to rely on.

More than that; they cannot competently direct disaster recovery/relief from floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, wildfires, volcanic eruptions or earthquakes—let alone control or prevent such disasters.

Yet they want people to believe that they can, and should, be permitted to try and regulate the planetary climate, which is infinitely more subtle and varied and complex than any of the recently-built, closed, man-made systems they have already repeatedly proven incapable of managing.

And with just 5 minutes of searching you can find the reason. In the late 1500s sweet potato from Peru arrived in Tahiti through traditional trade between Tahiti and Peru. It spread out of Tahiti and ended up in Rarotonga (AKA the mythic Hawakei Of Maori legend). Maori opooibly discovered New Zealand as early as the late 900s but that is dodgy and probably a myth as the currents were all wrong that early. We know that Maori found the North coast around 1350 and large family groups inhabited Northern NZ mostly in the far North and around the Bay of Plenty and inland around Rotorua.Population densities were sparse but early Maori managed to eat all of the large ground foraging massive birds within 100 years of their arrival. THEN the sweet potato arrived in the early 1600s about 1620-30s. There was a massive population explosion due to the change diet from protein to carbs! Suddenly LAND was in high demand so the Maori Kumera Wars broke out and lasted just under 200 years. Massive rammed earthen forts were raised and cannibalism and slavery became endemic as land hunger arose and the demand of slaves from smaller Maori tribes demanded slaves to raise more Kumera to feed populations of warriors. Maori suddenly from fighting with stone clubs to the Birmingham Muskets that were imported by entrepreneurs in Sydney via whalers and sealers who had arrived from Australia, France England and the US. For the next 40 years Maori butchered each other in the outgrowth of the 200 year Kumera war that blended into the 40 year Musket wars that saw Maori numbers fall quickly to Maori armed with firearms vs. Maori armed with clubs and sharp sticks! By 1840 smaller Maori tribes sought the protection of the few British settlers and a Treaty was signed at Waitangi, surprisingly in the far North where the largest tribal groups had been predating the smaller tribes for decades. The 1870s Land Wars reappeared but this time between Maori who threw their hand in with their British protectors vs. Maori who had never signed the Treaty and Maoro from the North Island’s West coast around Taranaki (AKA New Plymouth)and also Waikato region just south of Auckland Towne where former soldiers had been gifted 100 acre farms as part of their reparation for fighting in the Maori Land wars.

Now transition to 2023 NZ Parliament where a fresh faced part Maori woman does a war dance in Parliament that was all about fighting in the Land wars against the British, the 40 year (mostly tribal) Musket Wars of the early 1800s, and the 200 year tribal wars of the Kumera Wars. Almost ALL of this murder, cannibalism, tribal slavery was due to the Small Ice Age in the Northern Hemisphere and the effects that had on tides and currents within the Pacific that changes radically between the 1300s and the late middle 1800s. Finding a new Territory full of birds who were not scared of human beings and were easy to catch and eat, The population explosion arrived warfare fort building slavery, cannibalism, starvation, the arrival of guns from outside and population collapse all led to that young Lady and some pretty fanciful story telling about past victories, but totally forgetting all of the really evil bits!

Yup pretty much, although you will be hard pressed to find it in a school syllabus due to teacher unions and new-Marxist agendas. With just over 15% of the New Zealand population of varying mixes of Maori and European linages resulting in around 50% of prison inmates, you get the impression that the skin of civilisation is pretty thin in poorer parts of Maoridom. The break-up of more structured tribal roots post WWII resulted from basically rural Maori work and housing suddenly change to large urban poor housing and factory bottom end jobs. The attendant change in health and housing wrought bad outcomes for the newly urbanised Maori. Maori education has long histories of under-achievement from tribal roots extending into urban living in poor suburbs.

Not to say that Maori education has not had some outstanding champions but Maori remain creatures of a base tribalistic culture that has been contaminated by urban transplantation and poor living conditions. Examples of Maori achievement are easily seen in politics, business and especially the armed forces with examples of part Maori rising to the apex of these endeavours. Maori suffer however from imprisonment, drugs, alcohol and tobacco addiction and partially tribalist attitudes towards education, poor food choices, criminality, housing problems and resulting health outcomes that are poor. One highlight has been notable success by Maori in contact sport and the armed forces.

Alas the urbanisation of Maori has not been kind to Maori overall. The neo-Marxists have now got their hooks into poor urbanised Maori and that is impacting poor urbanised Maori, and even the rise of old style pagan Maori folk-law as a further lever to keep Maori suppressed through faux-pride, higher than average death rates and poor living conditions. So yes there are a substantial swath of part Maori who remain poor and violent and increasingly tribalist as they continue to look in all the wrong places for a fiction that is extolled about Maori that bares little to their tribalist past.

Also one to file in the ” Possum was helpful but did not realise the potentially tragic consequences ”

A few days ago I was walking to the store and noticed a couple of men and a few small kids surrounding a go-cart thingy. A petrol engine one which is rare as most kids toys are battery operated.

I do not speak Spanish but their English was OK. They were having problems getting at some bolts. LOL also metric bolts.

I took a look and told them I had tools to fit the bolts and also some fancy flat ratchet wrenches.

Went back to apartment and took them all the tools they needed. They asked me where I lived and couple of days later all tools returned.

Fast forward the little gas powered ATV thingy is up and running! Success you may think….

Not really. Now we have kids doing 40mph out on the street no helmets no roll bar, and scaring the cats.

Moral of the story? You see someone struggling to fix something just keep walking to the store.

As to the mini petrol powered go cart thing.

When it is zooming past potentially killing small cats and small children it is not emitting the usual smell or fumes of a two stroke engine. But I saw it close up and the engine seemed too simple to be a four stroke.

Fingers crossed. Hope it is a two stroke and they are not adding oil to the petrol.

Engine seizure and no more killer “toy” soon.

Adopt a retired two year old greyhound. Takes the concept of a quiet and slow walk in the park to a new level.

If retired greyhound hears a bell or sees a silly stuffed rabbit hang on tight and off you go!

Same with fostering a retired racehorse. Sit on its back and hope it knows where you want to go. If it is an American racehorse you will be ok as long as there are fences. They do not jump too good.

However, adopt a British steeple chaser, the ones that do fences and the fucker will not stop.

Been there, done that, CT scan OK. ( I lied about CT scan, they were not invented last time I fell off a two year old ex race horse )

I kind of quit and put all that behind me. But I still like a problem to fix. Bordm is current on this fancy USB shit.

The reason I said about connecting USB devices to an external powered USB hub is because the USB ports on a pc not only are the means of communication but they provide power to the devices, mice, keyboards, external drives and those fucking stupid USB coffee warmers and desk fans you can buy on Amazon.

When I used to do this shit one thing I learned about USB and the protocol is a USB device told the host it was connected to how much power it needed and the host monitored the power taken and shut the port down if that was exceeded.

Not going to Google this and cut and paste. But there is a limit to how much power a host can provide from its ports.

Connecting a powered USB hub to a PC means the PC no longer provides power to the connected devices just does communications.

Hey I really need to play with my Raspberry again.

    for possum…

so, i’m at a farm (airbnb trailer, love it!)…couldn’t go home tonight because of the snow storm. the snow isnt the problem, the freezing rain underneath…yeah…no.

it’s freezing rain, snow, rain, 33f and just ice/snow yuk everywhere. the owners asked if i could come down to the barn and help them. of course! one of their scottish highland cattle got wrapped in some barbed wire and the vet wont be there till late tomorrow. i do ER, so ok…

there is, as possum knows, an article of clothing that is perfect for this shit. a lined barbour beaufort with hood.this is my third one since 88. my daughter absconded with the oldest, the ‘middle’ one is used lightly at home. this one is 6 months old, i got it at the tailor in this same town this summer.

yezzir, it got a baptism by fire, blood, shit, muck, hay bits, a nice scuff from the removing of barbed wire, freezing rain for an hour and a half. my wellies (american muck boots) are outside, they will need a good scrub when i get home tomorrow. the barbour, well, i hosed it off in the barn and gave it a scrub. it looks perfect and smells clean. i’ll need to re-apply wax when i get home tomorrow.

now for a shot or two of tito’s and a few pints. job done!

And a big fence so they cannot get out.

Greyhounds are cute but they are trained to chase a fluffy thing that runs fast.

If a retired greyhound sees a cat, a small dog, a bunny they will go after it and when they catch it they will savage it and kill it just like a pit bull would.

I don’t know. The greyhound was bred to be a hunting dog. To chase and disable its prey. Bred for speed and the killer instinct.

In all of the animals we have selectively bred then dogs are the worst failure.

Show dogs, snub nosed bulldogs, Pekinese, you get the idea.

    Pit bull terriers etc.

If I was a thinking person I would have to wonder why dogs are so susceptible to breeding to exaggerate certain traits when cats are not.

Yeah I know modern breeds of cats are an abomination too. I just like regular cats.

In the past we needed hunting dogs, like a thousand years ago. They were tools, needed to provide food.

    Now the modern Unit:
It changed from the 4th Light Horse to the 4/19 Prince of Wales Light Horse in recognition of their taking Beersheba

Then to A Squadron of 1st. Cavalry Regiment

And now to A Squadron of the 2nd. Cavalry Regiment

Still Light Blue on Dark Blue and still wearing the Emu Feather in their Slouch Hats

It’s beyond bizarre that the Secretary of Defense was in ICU for four days while his Deputy was on vacation and no one told her, no one told the President Biden, and Biden has to be lead off stage so he doesn’t get lost and we’re all supposed to pretend this is perfectly normal.

    @ right_wing2:

It’s 23 here, with 25 mph winds. Supposed to be gusting to 50 mph by afternoon.

    I think it’s a good day to stay inside…
