Wobbly World

I miss days like this.

I love .gif animations just for their simplicity. This particular type is a lenticulation, taking two images about 2-1/2 inches a part and animating them for a 3D effect.  Originally a novelty printing process for stereoscopic viewing, now it’s reduced to blogfodder for a wiggly Overnight Open Thread.

At least I hope that’s a costume. Or maybe it’s a metaphor for what most people hope the new Republican majority will do to Obama’s Rat Patrol.

According to statistics provided by Morgan Stanley, historically the economy rebounds by 200% within two years once the recovery starts. Unfortunately, this is the deepest recession we’ve had since the Great Depression, and I’m not entirely convinced that recovery has begun.

The dim light at the end of the tunnel is the recent election (excepting Kaliforkyou) so maybe there’s some hope after all, even though it’s a long tunnel.

On a lighter note, we don’t need no stinkin’ tunnels to see the light of an Overnight Open Thread.

The Davis Manufacturing Company

The Davis Manufacturing Company in 1925 looked innocuous enough, hawking drugs and *ahem* spices. They were still in business in 1963, and produced this curious ad:

So, um, if it’s hard to beat your meat, praise Allah? No wonder the kid in the weenie hat is interested. [Insert more off-color snarkage here.]

The one prophetic detail that really stands out is the little jet airplane on his epaulet. I ran a tineye search, and turned up just two hits, both of which showed the plane, and both sites questioned whether it had been photopooped. I can’t tell, but if the ad ran in 1963, it’s likely a hoax, as the first DC-9 passenger jet didn’t fly commercially until 1965.

Images from here and here, and here is the Overnight Open Thread.

[Update: Bill Jenkins deBunked my ignint assumption.

“The image on the clothing is definitely not a DC-9 which has 2 rear-mounted engines. A 707 would have the correct look and most certainly flew in that era.”

Good catch.]

[Update: Bill Jenkins is now officially as clueless as I am. It might be a DC-8.]

I’ll leave it up to you folks to decide which “Nancy” is referred to in the title of this thread. The photo is equally appropriate for either one.

Last night we set a new record for the number of comments on the OOT, spread across three consecutive threads. Over a period of 9-1/2 hours we tallied over 900 comments, while a certain blog barely made 600 over a span of 11 hours (not that we keep track of such unimportant trivia – heh).

So, after last night’s festivities, we’ve hosed down the rec room and restocked the bar and larder (the blarder?) for a decompressing edition of the Overnight Open Thread.
