Stairway to Aleppo

Earliest date found for this image [via Tineye] is 1 April 2014 with this caption:

Left After Assad Bombing in Aleppo.

I have a bit of a problem with that structural impossibility, and so does physics. Then I found this:

Stairway to Aleppo 0
That image dates to 23 March 2014. A more recent post dated 19 June 2015 comes from TehranPress.com. Even Google Translate can’t crack that one, but it appears that someone’s laughing.

Stairway to Aleppo Original

This seems to be the unadulterated version, with an interesting caption:

Residents try to find their belongings among the rubble left of their homes after what activists said was an air attack from forces loyal to Syria’s President Bashar Al-Assad in Bab Neirab, Aleppo, on July 27, 2013.

That caption and image came from The Atlantic via *ahem* Reuters… who have never *cough* posted manipulated propaganda photos before.
[Hint: Google Islamic Rage Boy, Green Helmet Man, Wailing Woman, Iraqi Missile Photoshop.]

Yet even the description (“what activists said”) sounds specious. When Assad was under attack by the Muslim Brotherhood, why would his forces bomb his own people, unless Syria was already infiltrated by radical islam?

Oh, wait…

[Top image found here entirely by accident, and the others didn’t come from Little Green Footballs either.]

Heh. I recobanize two of the book covers (Nos. 1 & 6) and there are more at the original source (NSFK).  Why did I post them here? Because I found them amusing and mildly offensive. Smiling at blasphemy is always a part of a Big Little Golden Book Edition of The Overnight Open Thread.

Great googly-moogly! If that’s a photoshop, it’s a good one except for an odd s-shaped brownish splice, and something funky about the front right paw and its shadow. On the other hand, it’s entirely possible that the pooch was whelped with doggie dwarfism.

The dog disturbed me a bit, so it’s only fair that I create a disturbance for The Overnight Open Thread.

The Davis Manufacturing Company

The Davis Manufacturing Company in 1925 looked innocuous enough, hawking drugs and *ahem* spices. They were still in business in 1963, and produced this curious ad:

So, um, if it’s hard to beat your meat, praise Allah? No wonder the kid in the weenie hat is interested. [Insert more off-color snarkage here.]

The one prophetic detail that really stands out is the little jet airplane on his epaulet. I ran a tineye search, and turned up just two hits, both of which showed the plane, and both sites questioned whether it had been photopooped. I can’t tell, but if the ad ran in 1963, it’s likely a hoax, as the first DC-9 passenger jet didn’t fly commercially until 1965.

Images from here and here, and here is the Overnight Open Thread.

[Update: Bill Jenkins deBunked my ignint assumption.

“The image on the clothing is definitely not a DC-9 which has 2 rear-mounted engines. A 707 would have the correct look and most certainly flew in that era.”

Good catch.]

[Update: Bill Jenkins is now officially as clueless as I am. It might be a DC-8.]
