The Forward claims that criticism of Pajama Boy is anti-Semitic

The race card is played out, yet no one has told the Progressives this. In desperate attempt to smear the critics of the Pajama Boy Hipster, The Socialist rag  Forward claims that the Right’s mocking of the pajama wearing Hipster  is rooted in hatred of Jews. Ironically in making their case, the Forward pushes stereotypes of Jews.

The Right went apoplectic, calling Pajama Boy “a metrosexual in a plaid onesie,” “an insufferable man-child,” and various other vaguely sexist and homophobic epithets. Apparently, real men don’t wear pajamas.

Or glasses. What’s interesting about the Right’s freakout about men who don’t measure up to the standards of the 1950s is how Pajama Boy’s obvious Jewishness has been subsumed by these other characteristics.

Yes, Virginia, Pajama Boy is a member of the tribe. Look at him. Pale Ashkenazic skin, Jew-fro’d black curls, Woody Allen specs. Even the smart-ass expression on his face screams of the Wise Son from the Passover Seder.

Parenthetically, the model himself is one Ethan Krupp, an Organizing for America staffer who is, in fact, Jewish. But whether Krupp himself is circumcised or not, Pajama Boy is semiotically Jewish, even stereotypically so.

In fact, Pajama Boy stands at a centuries-old nexus of anti-Semitism and misogyny. As scholars including Sander Gilman and Daniel Boyarin have shown, Jewish men have been accused of being unmanly for hundreds of years – including by other Jews, such as the early Zionists, whose muscular Judaism was a direct response to diaspora Jewish emasculation. This is an old, old motif.

[….]

Whether or not the Pajama-Boy bashers are unconsciously anti-Semitic or not, I don’t know. Consciously, they are against everything “Judaism” stands for, at least as construed by its enemies: outsiderness, cosmopolitanism, liberalism, a progressive rather than nativist agenda, an opposition to the notion that there is one kind of “normal” person, a sympathy for the underdog and the immigrant as opposed to the successful and the privileged, and, yes, a rejection of a certain gendered, masculinist understanding of justice wherein the strong survive and the weak are trampled underfoot like the untermenschen they are.

That fascistic outlook has long been a part of far-right conservatism – whether in revisionist Zionism, contemporary French/Hungarian/Greek nationalism, American Republicanism, or German fascism.

Last time i checks, Zionists are Jewish. The Forward is really reaching with this anti-semitism claim.

For the record, when I saw Pajama Boy I thought he was an Italian, Greek or White Hispanic Hipster until I saw his name. When I think of Jews, these are the guys I think of.

Is Israel Guilty of Reverse Ethnic Cleansing?

An official “Palestinian” census shows that the Arab population of Gaza has grown over 40% in the last 10 years, and should completely double in 21 years.

So much for the unceasing ridiculous claims that Israel is committing “ethnic cleansing” against the so-called “Palestinians”.

pali-population-boom1RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP) – The population of the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip has passed 1.4 million people, an increase of nearly 40 percent over the past 10 years, an official Palestinian census published Sunday said.

The census found that as of 2007 the population of the territory had reached 1,416,543 compared to 1,022,207 in 1997, with an estimated annual growth rate of 3.3 percent.

“Assuming a stable growth during the coming years, the Gaza Strip population will double in 21 years,” said the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, which carried out the census.

The average family size across Gaza has declined, however, from 6.9 household members to 6.5, according to the census.

The population of the impoverished coastal territory remains overwhelmingly young, with 48.3 percent of residents under 15 years of age. In 1997 50.2 percent of residents were under 15.

The majority of Gaza residents are UN-registered refugees from what is now Israel, constituting 67.9 percent of the population, a slight increase from 1997 when refugees made up 65.1 percent.

The census found increasing literacy in Gaza, with 5.5 percent of the population over 10 years old listed as illiterate in 2007 compared to 11.3 percent in 1997.

The preliminary results from the census released in February 2008 put the entire Palestinian population in Gaza and the Israeli-occupied West Bank including east Jerusalem at 3,761,646.

Most Palestinians, 2,345,107, live in the West Bank, an increase of 30 percent in 10 years. The statistics bureau has not yet released final results on the West Bank or east Jerusalem.

Oh, and for a point of comparision, the Jewish population in Gaza however has shrunk over the last 10 years by 100%.  celery-grower-gush-katif

Israel Acts Because The World Wont Defend It

~Daniel Finkelstein of The ‘Times of London’ asks you to “understand Israel.”~

“The origin of the state of Israel…is the experience of  oppression and murder, the fear of total annihilation and the bitter conclusion that world opinion could not be relied upon to protect the Jews.

So when Israel is urged to respect world opinion and put its faith in the international community the point is rather being missed.

The very idea of Israel is a rejection of this option. Israel only exists because Jews do not feel safe as the wards of world opinion. Zionism, that word that is so abused, so reviled, is founded on a determination that, at the end of the day, somehow the Jews will defend themselves and their fellow Jews from destruction. If world opinion was enough, there would be no Israel.

The poverty and the death and the despair among the Palestinians in Gaza moves me to tears. How can it not? Who can see pictures of children in a war zone or a slum street and not be angry and bewildered and driven to protest? And what is so appalling is that it is so unnecessary. For there can be peace and prosperity at the smallest of prices. The Palestinians need only say that they will allow Israel to exist in peace. They need only say this tiny thing, and mean it, and there is pretty much nothing they cannot have.

Yet they will not say it. And they will not mean it. For they do not want the Jews. Again and again – again and again – the Palestinians have been offered a nation state in a divided Palestine. And again and again they have turned the offer down, for it has always been more important to drive out the Jews than to have a Palestinian state. It is difficult sometimes to avoid the feeling that Hamas and Hezbollah don’t want to kill Jews because they hate Israel. They hate Israel because they want to kill Jews.

There cannot be peace until this changes. For Israel will not rely on airy guarantees and international gestures to defend it. At its very core, it will not. It will lay down its arms when the Jews are safe, but it will not do it until they are.”

Among other reasons, Israel was created because the world does not come to the aid and protection of the Jewish people.  After thousands of years of Jews being the victims of murder, rape, pogroms, ethnic cleansing, second-class treatment, abuse, and humiliation, which culminated with The Holocaust, Jews realized that we no longer could foolishly depend on the world and/or world opinion to come to our rescue and save us.   It was in this context that the modern Jewish State of Israel was born.

It is exactly this newly realized Jewish pride, and right to self-defense that the world today, spearheaded by the Islamists, are trying to destroy.
