Germans lament Economic impact of American withdrawal

The US is finally starting to pull back from Germany. Many Germans now fret about the economic impact of this draw down. The US has been in Bavaria for almost 4 generations now. Many Americans have settled there and married local women. But like all things, times change and America’s security needs have as well.

GRAFENWOEHR, Germany (Reuters) – Walter Brunner, a lively 82-year old whose blue baseball cap matches the color of his eyes, leans across a red leather booth at the American-style diner in this southern German town and tries to make light of the looming pullout of U.S. troops.

“We Germans fought for the Russians to go, now we are fighting for the Americans to stay,” jokes Brunner, chairman of the German-American contact club in Grafenwoehr, whose lifeblood is its U.S. military base

Local businesses say up to 90 percent of their trade comes from Americans. The town of Grafenwoehr receives 2.8 million euros in state subsidies every year largely due to the U.S. presence. Some 2,900 Germans are employed directly or indirectly by the military.

According to U.S. army data American purchasing power in and around Grafenwoehr, a quaint town of 7,000 not including the U.S. base, is around 35 million euros. Another 30 million euros is spent per year on rent by American families.

“Grafenwoehr lives from the Americans and will die without them. It’s as simple as that,” said 35-year-old Helmut Dostler, whose family have run Grafenwoehr’s Hotel Zur Post for four generations.

As the Cold War escalated the United States had more than a quarter of a million troops in Europe. German civilians complained about the noise of low-flying aircraft, drunken troops or damage to the environment.

The 1960s saw demonstrations across West Germany against the Vietnam war and the 1980s brought large protests outside some U.S. bases against plans to deploy new medium-range nuclear missiles. U.S. forces have always been viewed by some, especially on the political left, with hostility, as occupiers.

“In the 1970s we had more U.S. soldiers in Germany than there were in the entire French army. The size of the deployment was grandiose,” said Jack Clarke, a professor of defense planning at the Marshall Center in Germany.

This is the end of an era.

America’s Next Top… huh?

AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MUFTI welcomes some of the youngest, hippest members of the Islamic world during the very first season of the new hit show for modern Islamists. Hopefuls from across the country are given the chance to prove they have what it takes to be judge and jury when the competition kicks off.

Malaysia’s Next Top Mufti

The latest reality TV sensation in Malaysia may strike Western viewers as an unlikely candidate to join the ranks of Ryan Seacrest and Heidi Klum: Hasan Mahmood, who wears a turban during each episode of his recently launched television series, “Young Imam,” is the former grand mufti of Malaysia’s national mosque.

At first glance, “Young Imam” looks fairly similar to its Western counterparts (it is often described as a relative of “American Idol”): each week, Mahmood winnows down a pool of young Malaysians competing for a glitzy prize package. But the similarities stop there. Instead of vying for premium record deals or glossy magazine spreads, the eager contestants on this show are competing for a shot at becoming the country’s next leading religious leader. The winner will walk away with a scholarship to al-Madinah University in Saudi Arabia, a job at a Kuala Lumpur mosque, and a fully-paid Haj pilgrimage to Mecca. They are judged on everything from their musical chops (when reciting the Koran) to their academic credentials (when interpreting the Koran).

In other news from the islamic world, apparently the softer side of islam is taking hold. Some German jihadis decided Pakistan was just too tuuuuuff and they want to head home to mommy!

Aww: German Terrorists in Pakistan Homesick, Want Their Mommies

So, your a German national and all your friends down at the mosque tell you how wonderful it must be to be a mujahideen. On top of that mom and dad regale you with their stories of the good life growing up in Pakistan. So what’s an aspiring shahid to do but make the caravan to the lands of martyrdom.

Only you get there and you realize that all that stuff on the internet about how the mujahideen are busy kicking kafir ass is just so much bullshit.

[…]

Never fear, the Germans, always willing to forgive and forget, want to help you with an “opt out” program. I’m guessing they’ll supply the World of Warhammer, Hasselhoff, and shiza films to help you re-acclimate yourself to German culture.

Seriously?

German Lingerie Ad Lifts the Veil on Muslim Women

It’s a daring ad, yet one that sends a positive message that goes well beyond hawking lacy teddies. Whether a person is wearing a sweatsuit or burqa, their true identity cannot be parsed by their outward appearance.

Of course, this ad is not meeting with approval from every corner. Islamineurope.com discusses a Norwegian television interview with religion historian Hanne Nabintu Herland, who criticized the commercial because it “links the Arab dress with sexuality, and not to morals and virtue.” Well, Liaisons Dangereuse is in the business of making money by selling naughty undergarments, so it’s unlikely their marketing plan called for promoting “morals and virtue.” Herland says the ad unnecessarily “trample[s] the cultural dress of Muslims.”

China now has the 3rd biggest economy. It is becoming a very powerful nation and one to watch.

China becomes third largest economy

China overtook Germany to become the world’s third-largest economy in 2007 after the Chinese authorities revised upwards the figures for growth during that year.

China’s National Bureau of Statistics said on Wednesday that the economy expanded by 13 per cent in 2007, a sharp increase from the 11.9 per cent growth rate the authorities had previously stated

China is making great strides. Hopefully they’ll lash out at the Jihadists and not us. We must watch them.
