House of Representatives Votes to Defund ACORN

Great. Now where will pimps and whores go to get advice on tax evasion?

The House voted Thursday to deny all federal funds for ACORN in a GOP-led strike against the scandal-tainted community organizing group that comes just three days after the Senate took similar action. “ACORN has violated serious federal laws, and today the House voted to ensure that taxpayer dollars would no longer be used to fund this corrupt organization,” said second-ranked House Republican Eric Cantor of Virginia.

The vote, on a provision attached to a student aid bill, was 345-75, with Democrats supplying all the “no” votes.

On Monday the Senate voted 83-7 to deny housing and community grant funding to ACORN, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

Republicans accelerated their attacks on the liberal-leaning group a year ago when ACORN, in conducting a massive voter registration drive, was accused of submitting some false registration forms.

On a hidden-camera video released on Monday, two ACORN employees are seen apparently advising a couple that was posing as a prostitute and her pimp to lie about her profession and launder her earnings. The video was the latest in a series that has already led to the firing of four ACORN employees in Baltimore and Washington. It was created by James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles and posted on BigGovernment.com, where O’Keefe identifies himself as an activist filmmaker.

It’s telling that, even after ACORN got caught helping what they thought was a pimp and a prostitute cheat on taxes, 75 Democrats STILL voted against defunding the group. 75 Democrats think it’s perfectly alright for a group that essentially got caught in conspiracy to commit a federal felony to receive taxpayer funds. There’s something seriously, seriously wrong with the Democrat Party.

It should be interesting to see what the President does with this, since he was the one who resisted calls to remove ACORN funding from Porkulus earlier this year. The House and the Senate both have more than enough votes to override a veto. Obama surely won’t be so stupid as to set himself up for a crushing political defeat over something so ridiculous as a “community organizing” group, will he?

The Ghost Fleet of Singapore

Ben Bernanke can bury his head in the sand and tell us that the recession is over all he wants.  After all, that’s what he gets paid to do, and promoting the sort of propaganda which will mask what a miserable failure Obama’s economic policies have been and will continue to be is a lot of the reason why, despite how badly he’s helped to jack up the world economy, he was renominated to head the Fed.  The MSM can run all the stories it wants about how a slight, statistical uptick in this, that, or the other economic indicator is really evidence for green shoots all over the place.  Yet, reality has a way of reasserting itself, regardless of how badly the Left wants to believe that Obama has “saved” us from depression.  And one way this is happening is with the ongoing saga of the ghost fleet of empty freighters idled off the coast of Singapore,

The tropical waters that lap the jungle shores of southern Malaysia could not be described as a paradisical shimmering turquoise. They are more of a dark, soupy green. They also carry a suspicious smell. Not that this is of any concern to the lone Indian face that has just peeped anxiously down at me from the rusting deck of a towering container ship; he is more disturbed by the fact that I may be a pirate, which, right now, on top of everything else, is the last thing he needs.

His appearance, in a peaked cap and uniform, seems rather odd; an officer without a crew. But there is something slightly odder about the vast distance between my jolly boat and his lofty position, which I can’t immediately put my finger on.

Then I have it – his 750ft-long merchant vessel is standing absurdly high in the water. The low waves don’t even bother the lowest mark on its Plimsoll line. It’s the same with all the ships parked here, and there are a lot of them. Close to 500. An armada of freighters with no cargo, no crew, and without a destination between them.

[snip]

Here, on a sleepy stretch of shoreline at the far end of Asia, is surely the biggest and most secretive gathering of ships in maritime history. Their numbers are equivalent to the entire British and American navies combined; their tonnage is far greater. Container ships, bulk carriers, oil tankers – all should be steaming fully laden between China, Britain, Europe and the US, stocking camera shops, PC Worlds and Argos depots ahead of the retail pandemonium of 2009. But their water has been stolen.

They are a powerful and tangible representation of the hurricanes that have been wrought by the global economic crisis; an iron curtain drawn along the coastline of the southern edge of Malaysia’s rural Johor state, 50 miles east of Singapore harbour.

[snip]

The Aframax-class oil tanker is the camel of the world’s high seas. By definition, it is smaller than 132,000 tons deadweight and with a breadth above 106ft. It is used in the basins of the Black Sea, the North Sea, the Caribbean Sea, the China Sea and the Mediterranean – or anywhere where non-OPEC exporting countries have harbours and canals too small to accommodate very large crude carriers (VLCC) or ultra-large crude carriers (ULCCs). The term is based on the Average Freight Rate Assessment (AFRA) tanker rate system and is an industry standard.

A couple of years ago these ships would be steaming back and forth. Now 12 per cent are doing nothing.

You may wish to know this because, if ever you had an irrational desire to charter one, now would be the time. This time last year, an Aframax tanker capable of carrying 80,000 tons of cargo would cost £31,000 a day ($50,000). Now it is about £3,400 ($5,500).

This, folks, means bad, bad news for the global economy.  It means things aren’t getting better.  When ships have nothing to carry, it’s because the stuff they’d carry isn’t being made.  Simple as that.   For the past year and a half, an increasing share of the world’s merchant fleets have been idled down, and as the article notes, you can barely give away space on one of these ships.

What’s worse is we have an economically illiterate Administration in Washington that is cynically trying to manipulate the economy in the short term to get the President’s poll numbers back up, but which is doing so much long-term damage that it will put true recovery off for years.  Example: the “Cash for Clunkers” program.  CfC did help to bring about a slight uptick in some economic indicators, since it artificially induced demand for automobiles, which had a trickle down effect and resulted in some slight increases in overall manufacturing output through subsidiary industries for last month.  But consider this question – now that the government has front-loaded several months’ worth of demand into a single month, what do you think is going to happen in the months to come?  The answer – no demand for automobiles, dealers going out of business, and more layoffs of workers from idle factories.   And so on.  The decision-making coming out of the Obama administration is atrocious.

The problem is that if the President of the nation which still has the single largest economy on the planet starts messing our economy up even worse (which he seems to be doing – stimulus has totally failed, his policies accelerated the rise in unemployment even beyond his own worst-case scenario, etc.), this will rock everybody else’s boat, which in turn comes back to rock ours even worse.  Which means higher unemployment, more idle factories, more people going broke, more people defaulting on their mortgages, fewer people buying manufactured goods – rinse, lather, repeat.  And we haven’t even gotten to the coming ARM adjustment mess which is going to explode in our faces beginning in early 2010, and which some economists predict will make the housing bubble burst look like a soap bubble popping.   Nor have we really begun to see the effects of the commercial real estate bubble burst – though there’s rumblings that it may be beginning as well.

What it all means is that the ghost fleet will be getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela To Go Nuclear

Undoubtedly a result of the fecklessness of the Obama Administration, and the UN in response to Iran’s moving forward toward nuclear weapons, Hugo Chavez has decided to begin working on becoming a nuclear power himself.

The connections between Venezuela and Iran are well documented, and it seems that we are now finally seeing the fruits of our ignoring them.

It is all being underwritten by Russia (of course).

CARACAS, Venezuela —  Hugo Chavez wants to join the nuclear energy club and is looking to Russia for help in getting started.

The Venezuelan leader is already dismissing critics’ concerns over his nuclear ambitions, offering assurances his aims are peaceful and that Venezuela will simply be following in the footsteps of other South American nations using nuclear energy.

Yet his project remains in its planning stages and still faces a host of practical hurdles, likely requiring billions of dollars, as well as technology and expertise that Venezuela lacks.

Russia has offered to help bridge that gap, and Chavez has announced that the two countries have created an atomic energy commission.

“I say it before the world: Venezuela is going to start the process of developing nuclear energy, but we’re not going to make an atomic bomb, so don’t be bothering us afterward … (with) something like what they have against Iran,” Chavez said Sunday.

The socialist president is closely allied with Iran and defends its nuclear program while the U.S. and other countries accuse Tehran of having a secret nuclear weapons program.

Does this “we are doing it just for peaceful purposes” sound familiar?

Oh, don’t worry; the Obama Administration responded:

U.S. State Department spokesman Ian Kelly on Monday expressed misgivings about Venezuela’s nuclear ambitions. Responding to a reporter’s question about whether the United States would be worried about nuclear transfers between Iran and Venezuela, Kelly said: “The short answer is, to that, yes, we do have concerns.”

Kelly noted that Venezuela is a signatory of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, which would restrict any nuclear program to nonmilitary purposes.

Obama Administration Enlisting “Arts Community” To Produce Propaganda?

by WrathofG-d ( 129 Comments › )

I guess mass spamming of unsolicited e-mails through AOL isn’t enough for this “computer savvy” Administration to satisfy their desire to turn everything into an arm of the Administration.  This time  it is the “art community” who was tapped to push the Administration’s agenda.

There is a old saying that “to a liberal/communist, everything is political.”  It seems that the Obama Administration is doing everything in their power to prove this saying true.

Another conference call has materialized, revealing a concerted effort by government to use the arts to address political issues.

Lee Rosenbaum, a blogger for Artsjournal.com, posted her experience with a meeting that occurred on August 27th and confessed that she also felt “uneasy” about the government’s arts effort.  The meeting invitation (viewable here) went out to all “member local, state, and regional arts agencies, community-based arts organizations, and national partners of Americans for Arts.”  Americans for Arts is a non-profit arts organization that has received substantial grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.

As with my conference call, the art group was invited to the meeting to work together to “tackle some of the nation’s toughest issues: education; health; energy and the environment; community renewal; and safety and security.” Also like my call, it included a private citizen moderating the phone call with key White House representatives participating. Kalpen Modi, Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, was to represent the White House and key representatives from the National Endowment for the Arts were also to participate.

Even more disturbing than learning that the White House and NEA are using the arts to address specific issues, is to learn what was discussed on this new conference call. Rosenbaum mentions that there was much talk of “leveraging federal dollars” to get artists and cultural organizations involved in social-service projects.

What appears to be emerging is a concerted and deliberate effort by the White House and the NEA to encourage the art community to create issue specific art. This new conference call shows the same modus operandi, including a “third party” individual moderating the call to apparently distance the NEA and the White House from initiating the meeting.

The National Endowment for the Arts has yet to comment regarding their involvement with this effort, except for one small, but damaging, comment by their Communications Director Yosi Sergant.

How long until Obama Administration comissioned propaganda turns up on our TVs, radios, etc?
