“Congratulations! You Are A Piece of ____ !”

You’ve seen them. They began on the C and D Blogs, and they’re all over the B Blogs now. Dopey questionnaires that ask you to answer five or six odd questions, none of which can be answered wrong. Then you submit your answers, and the magic internet blogsite genii tells you what kind of breakfast cereal you are, or some such drivel.

Don’t know what I’m railing about? Here are a few examples:

What kind of afro-desiac are you?

What kind of paper clip do you most resemble?

If you were a freakin’ cupcake, would you be less of a dork?

What kind of imaginary powers that would raise you up from your own miserable pathetic little life that you would wish for, assuming you have a life to begin with?

The results of these inane surveys are then posted on the authors’ websites with a proclamation such as “I am a furry little wombat/budgie hybrid who enjoys hot cocoa.” Barf.

So, then, I have a proposal for y’all. Whenever and wherever you find a blog that asks you to take a dopey “What Kind Of ___ Am I” type quiz, don’t bother clicking on the link. Just answer “I’m Asparagus.” No further explanation is necessary.

Let’s get rid of this obnoxious trend so we can get on with REALLY inane blogging, like cat snoring videos:

Ugh. Time for an Overnight Open Thread.

[Found here.]

The best summary of the various forms of government I’ve ever seen was in this must-see video from a year or so ago. If any of my fellow netizens haven’t seen it, it’s required viewing IMO.

I know I’m preaching to the choir, but if any of you have kids or grandkids that haven’t seen that video, it’s worth paying them to watch it.

Did someone say Open Thread?

We Kicked England’s Balls

Although the World Cup actually began yesterday somewhere in Africa, the USA team kicked England’s arse in a tie of 1-1. I’ll explain why shortly.

The game supposedly originated when victorious Brits began a game of kicking around the skull of a dispatched Roman soldier Danish prince. Eventually the skull was replaced with an inflated sheep’s bladder (brilliance), and they began kicking that up and down the path between rival villages. The game spread to other villages, and gained the name of “Association Football,” abbreviated to “Assoc.” A participant was termed an “Assoc-er,” thus was the game of Soccer introduced into the English speaking world.

I doubt the previous summary is entirely accurate, but humor me for the attempt at historical improvisation.

Most Americans these days are introduced to Soccer (or Football as the rest of the civilized world calls it) via AYSO, an excellent organization that introduces their kids to the sport and allows parents to yell at each other with impunity over rules they don’t understand. The offsides rule is particularly difficult for us yanks to comprehend because you can’t actually see it unless you are standing right behind the line judge (who is constantly in motion up and down the sidelines) when the foul occurs.

So today, England, the ancestral homeland of the sport, was supposed to have had an easy win over the supposedly inept USA team. It was expected to be a blowout, and with a goal within the first five minutes of play, England led by infinity. However,  in the last few minutes of the first half, the Brit keeper floundered allowing a tie score. He’s on suicide watch now, although it wasn’t entirely his fault as nine of his own teammates blew it before the bladder even reached him.

The USA team should be proud, even at a final score of 1-1. England got their pointy little noses polished. Now we’ll work on their teeth.

Overnight Open Thread? Why not.

Ze End of Ze World

Politically incorrect ignernt and factually wrong, I rediscovered this video from a few years ago. I still like it, and speaking of The End Of The World, here’s Skeeter Davis from 1965:

I fell in love with her when I was in elementary school.  In those days, The End Of The World generally had something to do with the USSR and nuclear annhilation and threats from other Reds/Communists. One baseball team even took to calling itself The Cincinnati Redlegs to keep the newpaper headlines between sports and world events separate.

My favorite End Of The World song is Fishbone’s “Party At Ground Zero.” Later on, REM had a nice hit but this one is more accurate:

Don’t forget this End Of The World gem. Michael Nesmith sings about the sister of one of the admins here:

As of today, the EPA has been given the power to regulate CO2 as a pollutant, so now we’re all gonna get fined for breathing. Really. (The Murkowski resolution to stop the EPA power grab failed on a 47-53 vote. Be sure to read Sen. Inhofe’s statement at the link if you haven’t already.)

Where have all the sentient Democrats gone? Has the entire party contracted a logic-eating brain virus? Let’s all exhale a big breath of CO2 while we still can do it for free with an Overnight Open Thread.
