John Kerry and the Audacity of Stupid

You can’t fix stupid.

After all of the recent revelations on the true state of climate science, you’d think GoreBull Warming legislation would be as dead as Ted Kennedy. It may well be, but John Kerry wants to bring Frankenstein’s Monster back to life:

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) said Tuesday that Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) remains committed to tackling energy and climate legislation.

“He affirmed he wants a bill and wants a bill soon,” Kerry told a climate change conference at the National Press Club.

Kerry said the election of Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), which ended Democrats’ filibuster-proof 60-vote majority, doesn’t change the landscape for the climate bill.

“It was always going to take more than just Democrats to do this,” Kerry said.

The comments come amid uncertainty about whether a controversial measure to limit greenhouse gas emissions can gain traction in the Senate.

Kerry is working to craft a bipartisan climate and energy plan with Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.).

Kerry said they intend to produce a measure soon but declined to offer a specific timeframe. “We are on a short track here in terms of piecing together legislation we intend to roll out,” he said at the event, which was hosted by The New Republic magazine.

Kerry said he’s optimistic about the effort despite what are widely viewed as long odds for climate legislation this year.

“I am excited,” Kerry said. “I know that’s completely counter to conventional wisdom.”

Kerry also reiterated that including greenhouse gas limits is vital in his view, casting aside calls for moving ahead with a package of energy measures that omits carbon caps.

What an ass! Will the Democrats (and a few Quisling RINOs) really be stupid enough to ram a cap and tax bill through in this climate? With climate “science” in ruins and new revelations and backpeddeling every day, I am skeptical. Every Democrat in the House is up for re-election this year, and it is already looking dicey. But that doesn’t deter John Kerry. He is excited about it. I guess he isn’t running this year.

Tales from the Climategate Crypt and The Good Charles

Something’s up. I’m not sure exactly what, but the police in the UK may be hitting a brick wall, and are breathing down some necks here. Today, two threads broke on two different blogs. Here, on ClimateAudit, Steve Mc recapped the sequence of events back in November surrounding the release of the leaked files into the internet wilds. His recount of events centered around the involvement of one Steve Mosher, one of the CA regulars, and the other major players.

Meanwhile over at WhatsUpWithThat, a fellow heretofore known as “CTM” (Charles the Moderator) “comes out”. Because of the way the events unfolded, CTM was one of the first people to get his hands on the leaked file, and had to sit on it for a couple of days while Anthony Watts returned from Europe, and could assess the situation.

CTM, as it turns out, is Charles Rotter of San Fransisco. Steve Mosher’s roommate. He had been simply anonymous “Charles”, but circumstances have made him decide to out himself. This, of course, explains how it is that Steve got a copy of the file so early on, and the fact that Charles decided to out himself tells me that someone has been breathing down both of their necks. No need for conspiracy theories; they laid it all out there.

As if this isn’t enough of a detective novel yet (and rumor has it that there’s a book in the works!), Mosher plunked this comment in his thread at CA:

Steven Mosher

From our side of the story we have divulged ll we know.

From Charles first finding the file in moderation at WUWT evening Nov17th His call to me went out at 7:02PM [ PST; 10:02 Eastern: SMc ] to my work with the file from shortly after that time until Nov 19th 11:55 PSt [3:55 pm Eastern] when I posted to lucia.

Steve has told his story. Charles his. Jeff, lucia, Anthony has given me quotes for the book. bender even came forward. No need for the police to do any more interviews. Unless, they are interested in other things like my funding. So, You hear that Norwich police? if you want to “solve” the crime everything I know is now posted on the internet. If you want to know if I’m supported by anybody? well first off none of your damn  business, and secondly no.

Now. What does gavin know?

Well, what does Gavin know? It seems like everyone else involved, on four blogs on the skeptical side have placed their cards down on the table. And now they’re openly telling the Norwich police that it’s all out there, and there’s no more. So the only other party involved in the release of the file (as opposed to a different bunch implicated in the emails themselves) is Gavin Schmidt.

Obviously the principals in this tale know things that you and I don’t know, and they’re trying to put Gavin in a corner. What does this all mean? I. Don’t. Know. Not a clue. But this isn’t happening for no reason, and I think it’s a safe bet that the butler’s about to start confessing.

Flim Flam’s sister Interviews Meltdown Mann, tries to Walk Back Hockeystick

Today’s serving of cyberipecac: An interview in the Philly Inquirer by staff writer Faye Flam (you can’t make this stuff up) of Climategate martyr St. Micheal Mann. There’s no point in my doing a fisking of the article, since guest blogger “John A.” at WattsUpWithThat did such a magnificent job here.

A lot of what John refers to is esoterica, but the end is priceless:

And then to Climategate. Faye is obviously well out of her depth and sinking fast

Mann recalls a Friday night when a colleague alerted him that the hackers had tried to expose the e-mails on RealClimate, the blog he founded with another climatologist.

Over the ensuing weeks, pundits have shifted their focus from one set of e-mail exchanges to another, dubbing the issue “climategate.” First, the spotlight shone on an exchange between two other researchers referring to a “trick” Mann had used in plotting his data.

But not even Mann’s critics can cite any evidence of deception in the now doubly investigated hockey stick papers. The term trick, said Mann, described a technique he used to display his data.

Again this fascination with deception, but I’m willing to bet this is Mann misrepresenting what actually happened with a journalist too lazy to check facts.

Other pundits criticized Mann and colleagues for agreeing to shun the journal Climate Research after it published work by climate-change skeptics. Mann said the particular article was bad science and was “polluting” the journal.

Pundits, Faye? They were scientists including the editor of the journal.

The article finishes with a tear-jerker:

There is still much debate over how big a role human activity plays in the current warming trend, and how the future will be affected. Climate science – and earth science in general – is not expected to make the kinds of sharp predictions that chemists and physicists can make with repeated experiments. “It would be nice if we could do controlled experiments,” Mann said. “But we have only one Earth.”

Yes, and all of these nasty questions make baby Jesus cry.

I wonder why newspapers are sinking fast into the mud of history and then Faye Flam arrives to remove the wonder.

John A., I take my hat off to you, Herr Snarkmeister.

One thing that John didn’t point out though, and I think it bears mentioning is this:

English Police: CRU Whistleblower = Terrorist

by snork ( 76 Comments › )
Filed under Abortion, Climate, Crime, Free Speech, Political Correctness, Science, UK at January 9th, 2010 - 6:53 am

You heard me right. English science blogger Bishop Hill contacted the police unit in charge of the CRU investigation to get an update on their investigation. The response that he received was jaw-dropping:

Norfolk Constabulary continues its investigations into criminal offences in relation to a data breach at the University of East Anglia.  During the enquiry officers have been working in liaison with the Office of the Information Commissioner and with officers from the National Domestic Extremism Team. The UEA continues to co-operate with the enquiry however major investigations of this nature are of necessity very detailed and as a consequence can take time to reach a conclusion. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.

That on its face seems rather odd; what does this have to do with “extremism”? Well, a quick look at Wiki fills in who the National Domestic Extremism Team is:

The National Domestic Extremism Team (NDET) is a UK police unit set up to provide a dedicated response to tackling domestic extremism. This team co-ordinates operations and investigations nationally, working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service which has set up a complementary network of prosecutors with specialist expertise in domestic extremism.

Well, that just talks in circles. However, turn over a few rocks, and we find this:

The National Extremism Tactical Coordination Unit (NETCU) along with its sister unit the National Domestic Extremism Team (NDET) are promoting the positive policing of unlawful street collections nationally as a continuation of the successful MPS Operation Redmill.

So let’s go back to Wiki and find out who this “sister organization” is:

NETCU answers to the Association of Chief Police Officers‘ (ACPO) Terrorism and Allied Matters Committee, and in particular to ACPO’s National Co-Ordinator for Domestic Extremism, Assistant Chief Constable Anton Setchell. It works with the Home Office, and the National Public Order Intelligence Unit.

So they’re a subsidiary of the National Extremism Tactical Co-ordination Unit. And NETCU’s mission is:

NETCU reports through the National Coordinator for Domestic Extremism (NCDE) to the Association of Chief Police Officers Terrorism and Allied Matters – ACPO(TAM) committee.

Curiously, they were founded originally to fight…well…read it yourself:

The unit was created in or around May 2004 to coordinate police action in relation to animal rights campaigns. It is based in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, which has been a focal point for animal rights activism as a result of the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty campaign.[5]

Apart from animal rights groups, it has also investigated the UK Life League, a direct action pro-life group that protests outside abortion clinics.

Which implies that abortion protests are also acts of terrorism. And if you think this is lovely so far, it gets even worse:

Because the ACPO is not a public body but rather a private limited company, NETCU is exempt from freedom of information laws and other kinds of public accountability, even though they are funded by the Home Office and deploy police officers from regional forces.

This couldn’t possibly happen here, right? But then again:

Nobody expects the National Domestic Extremism Team!!!

Extra: It appears that MI5 has a description of Domestic Extremism:

There are a number of UK-based extremist groups motivated by domestic causes other than the Northern Ireland situation.

Three men in balaclavas with pistols and an AK-47 rifle

Aftermath of the Brick Lane bombing of April 1999

At various times in the recent past, groups that have fallen into this category have included violent Scottish and Welsh nationalists, right- and left-wing extremists, animal rights extremists and other militant single-issue protesters.

[…]

In 2004, the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) established the National Extremism Tactical Coordination Unit (NETCU) (new window) as part of the national policing response to domestic extremism.

Yeah. I want to hear Cheyanne* spin this.
