An IRS Run Amok: Barack Getting To The Bottom, Once Again

This video is well worth the 70 minutes of your life that it takes to watch it from start to finish. In my case, I wanted them to actually keep going. In April of last year, Barack Obama promised America that he was a) just as upset as we were that his IRS, and more importantly his political appointees, were caught targeting his political opponents for increased scrutiny, harassment, and prosecution during two national elections, and b) he would, “get to the bottom of it.” Three weeks ago, he sat for a nationally televised interview and declared that his version of getting to the bottom of this had found that there was not even the slightest smidgen of scandal or anything untoward going on anywhere within the IRS.

Of course the reality is that the daily operations and status quo at the IRS are in fact far, far, worse than anyone ever thought. On the Friday after Thanksgiving this past year, the IRS announced that they would be changing their rules to make all of the things that they demanded of only conservative groups that were not part of their scope, part of their scope. There was no Congressional Legislation passed which granted them legal authority, nor any signed by our President. They just claimed via fiat, their very own increase in both scope and authority. Apparently, that’s pretty much the way things go at the IRS, and anyone who balks will be subject to the thuggish behavior that they have entitled themselves to.

Scarier than that however, is their blatant intention to apply these increases in scope and authority unevenly. Left of center good, right of center bad, and elected politicians from the political left will be all too happy to point out the targets for them. Even though the whole process is now playing out with nary an attempt to hide it any longer, we’re to believe that their’s not a smidgen of any wrong doing to be found here. I think I’m developing an eye tick.

IRS Targets Right leaning Hollywood groups

The popular culture has been a powerful tool for the Progressive movement’s control over American society. On a daily message, the leftist message is pushed on the public. The Right due to a big tactical mistake 22 years ago, is virtually shut out of the popular culture. There are exceptions such as Duck Dynasty and it turns out there is a secretive organization for Hollywood Rightwingers.

This Hollywood Conservative/Libertarian Friends of Abe group protects its members’ identities to prevent them from being blacklisted by the Marxist dominated studios. It is clearly a threat to Progressive  dominance, hence why they are being targeted by the IRS.

LOS ANGELES — In a famously left-leaning Hollywood, where Democratic fund-raisers fill the social calendar, Friends of Abe stands out as a conservative group that bucks the prevailing political winds.

A collection of perhaps 1,500 right-leaning players in the entertainment industry, Friends of Abe keeps a low profile and fiercely protects its membership list, to avoid what it presumes would result in a sort of 21st-century blacklist, albeit on the other side of the partisan spectrum.

Now the Internal Revenue Service is reviewing the group’s activities in connection with its application for tax-exempt status. Last week, federal taxauthorities presented the group with a 10-point request for detailed information about its meetings with politicians like Paul D. Ryan, Thaddeus McCotter and Herman Cain, among other matters, according to people briefed on the inquiry.

[….]

Those people said that the application had been under review for roughly two years, and had at one point included a demand — which was not met — for enhanced access to the group’s security-protected website, which would have revealed member names. Tax experts said that an organization’s membership list is information that would not typically be required.

The real goal of the IRS investigation is to obtain the secretive list of Hollywood Righties and destroy their careers. The Obama Regime and it’s Progressive allies view the popular culture as a pillar of their power. They will do all possible to maintain this monopoly and ruin the lives of actors who are not on the Left.

Political Cartoons by Michael Ramirez

I always have a private chuckle to my self when the subject of the Second Amendment comes up for debate. It’s words are parsed, logical gymnastics applied, straw men erected, ad hominems bandied about, non sequiturs employed, and through it all, the true meaning of the Amendment was never kept a secret.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of
a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms,
shall not be infringed.

The thing is this, we know who it was that wrote those words, and it was not done at some prehistoric time, nor was the meaning of them kept a secret. George Mason was the founding father who insisted on including this in the Bill of Rights, and he was incredibly prolific in arguing in any forum he could find on what he meant by them. The Second Amendment had nothing to do with hunting, other outdoor sports, national defense against foreign invaders, or even home defense as it would be implied today. The true and only purpose for the Second Amendment was to instill exactly the same fear in our government of we the people, as we would ever have of the government.

Certainly, there was never the intention to see acts of armed sedition, as such acts are also prohibited by that very same founding document. That is not however where that particular line of thought ended. Our founding fathers wished for a balance, one in which the federal government would always find its authority and power constrained, limited to the point where tyranny would be the last thing the citizens would have to fear. While making sedition against the law of the land, they also decided to let the government know, in a not too subtle a manner, that revolution would always be possible.

Despite the fact that this reason for that Amendment has been well documented during a time when written records were indeed kept, and exist in the Library of Congress, those of us who point to it have been labeled as the, “tinfoil behatted,” to use Jon Stewart’s indelicate phrase. How on Earth could anyone in his or her right mind ever doubt the benevolence of the United States Government or those Organizing angels who now make up the group of Marxists who recently were put in charge of our Executive Branch?

The argument has basically gone like this, tyranny is no longer possible with our government, and any fears of such are simply crazy, and all those who entertain such should be ignored, as they clearly lack the competency necessary for civil discourse. Something happened last week that has not only placed the whole gun grab push to the back burner, but has the main progenitors of that line of thinking publicly admitting that yes, the whole tyranny argument is not only a valid one for our side, but is something that we should all actively fear.

Certainly, these last two weeks will be looked back upon by future historians as a pivotal moment in the direction Americans have chosen for themselves. These were the two weeks when the other half of Americans realized that tyranny was indeed something to guard against. These were the two weeks when the other half of us realized that even if you completely trusted either George W. Bush or Barack Obama to be granted dictatorial powers as our nation’s chief executive, the next election cycle could see either George W. Bush or Barack Obama elected as the next fellow to be granted that same authority.

What gives me hope about this turn of events, and what it means for the future is not so much the things that are being said, but more who is saying them. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe, not even for a nano second, that the main stream media has suddenly realized the error of their ways and will start objectively reporting on current events, but when to a man, each of them, even the dolts on MSNBC start admitting in public that our government, and more specifically the bureaucracy run by the Obama Administration has stepped way over that line, then something noteworthy, if still subtle has indeed occurred.

I have often asked a question of my liberal debate adversaries, ever since hearing it posed by Milton Friedman first, Where are we going to find these angels who will come and organize our society for us? Dr. Friedman’s point was that power itself has a corrupting influence upon those who are granted it. That eventually, given the proper amount of time, even the most well intentioned individual, will become a part of the tyranny of which we should all be very afraid. Those individuals who began using the IRS as a political weapon for the purposes of inflicting punishment upon the ideological rivals of the current Administration doubtless felt that they were doing the nation a service. I have no doubts about their sincerity. They believe their ideology to be so superior to ours that they felt some justification in protecting the country from those who would seek limited government, lower taxes, less interference and regulation from a federal behemoth run amok. I also believe that they should be put in prison for the remainder of their lives, having doubtless used that authority of theirs to do the same to some of those whom they had harassed.

The point that Dr. Friedman was making, was that any government that needs to find benevolent altruistic people capable of running it adequately is doomed to failure. We will never find the right people to be in charge, as those people are simply a fantasy. We need to make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right things.

ABC News: IRS Official In Charge During Tea Party Targeting Now Runs Health Care Office

The Internal Revenue Service official in charge of the tax-exempt organizations at the time when the unit targeted tea party groups now runs the IRS office responsible for the health care legislation.

Sarah Hall Ingram served as commissioner of the office responsible for tax-exempt organizations between 2009 and 2012. But Ingram has since left that part of the IRS and is now the director of the IRS’ Affordable Care Act office, the IRS confirmed to ABC News today.

Her successor, Joseph Grant, is taking the fall for misdeeds at the scandal-plagued unit between 2010 and 2012. During at least part of that time, Grant served as deputy commissioner of the tax-exempt unit.

Grant announced today that he would retire June 3, despite being appointed as commissioner of the tax-exempt office May 8, a week ago.

As the House voted to fully repeal the Affordable Care Act Thursday evening, House Speaker John Boehner expressed “serious concerns” that the IRS is empowered as the law’s chief enforcer.

“Fully repealing ObamaCare will help us build a stronger, healthier economy, and will clear the way for patient-centered reforms that lower health care costs and protect jobs,” Boehner, R-Ohio, said.

“Obamacare empowers the agency that just violated the public’s trust by secretly targeting conservative groups,” Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Ind., added. “Even by Washington’s standards, that’s unacceptable.”

Sen. John Cornyn even introduced a bill, the “Keep the IRS Off Your Health Care Act of 2013,” which would prohibit the Secretary of the Treasury, or any delegate, including the IRS, from enforcing the Affordable Care Act.

Why Obama must have known exactly what Ingram was doing

Washington Examiner: UPDATED: IRS tax exemption/Obamacare exec got $103,390 in bonuses; Did Obama OK them?

Sarah Hall Ingram, the IRS executive in charge of the tax exempt division in 2010 when it began targeting conservative Tea Party, evangelical and pro-Israel groups for harassment, got more than $100,000 in bonuses between 2009 and 2012.

More recently, Ingram was promoted to serve as director of the tax agency’s Obamacare program office, a position that put her in charge of the vast expansion of the IRS’ regulatory power and staffing in connection with federal health care, ABC reported earlier today.

Ingram received a $7,000 bonus in 2009, according to data obtained by The Washington Examiner from the IRS, then a $34,440 bonus in 2010, $35,400 in 2011 and $26,550 last year, for a total of $103,390. Her annual salary went from $172,500 to $177,000 during the same period.

The 2010, 2011 and 2012 bonuses were awarded during the period when IRS harassment of the conservative groups was most intense. The newspaper obtained the data via a Freedom of Information Act request.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., described the Ingram awards as “stunning, just stunning.”

Bonuses as large as those awarded to Ingram typically require presidential approval, according to federal personnel regulations.

High-ranking career federal civil servants like Ingram are eligible for recognition through citations known as Distinguished and Merit Service awards that can carry with them cash bonuses of anywhere from five to 35 percent of their base salary.

The largest of such awards, however, require presidential approval, according to the Office of Personnel Management, which oversees the federal civil service workforce.

“If the recommended award is over $25,000, the Director of OPM reviews the nomination and forwards his/her recommendation to the President for approval,” according to the OPM guidance.

A key point on OPM’s “checklist” for federal bosses considering an employee for such a bonus is making sure that “the proposed award recipient has not been involved in any action or activity that could cause the President embarrassment …”

IRS Exempt Organizations Division director Lois G. Lerner “apolitical”? Not so much!

  • Daily Caller: Lerner’s admission of IRS’s inappropriate behavior was pre-planned public disclosure

WASHINGTON – Last week, Lois Lerner, head of the tax exempt division of the Internal Revenue Service dropped a bombshell: The IRS had been applying extra scrutiny to conservative groups claiming tax exempt status.

The revelation came seemingly out of the blue, in response to a question during a panel at an American Bar Association conference, leaving the audience baffled, according to reports.

As it turns out, it was not a spontaneous revelation. The question, said outgoing IRS Commissioner Steven Miller in testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee Friday, was planted, as part of a prepared strategy for the IRS to release this information to the public…

  • Daily Caller: Embattled IRS official Lois Lerner’s husband’s law firm has strong Obama connections

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) official who apologized for targeting conservative nonprofit groups for extra scrutiny is married to an attorney whose firm hosted a voter registration organizing event for the Obama presidential campaign, praised President Obama’s policy work, and had one of its partners appointed by Obama to a key ambassadorship.

IRS Exempt Organizations Division director Lois G. Lerner, who has been described as “apolitical” in mainstream press coverage of the IRS scandal, is married to tax attorney Michael R. Miles, a partner at the law firm Sutherland Asbill & Brennan. The firm is based in Atlanta but has a number of offices including in Washington, D.C., where Miles works.

The 400-attorney firm hosted an organizing meeting at its Atlanta office for people interested in helping with voter registration for the Obama re-election campaign…

  • Daily Caller: IRS official Lerner speedily approved exemption for Obama brother’s ‘charity’

Lois Lerner, the senior IRS official at the center of the decision to target tea party groups for burdensome tax scrutiny, signed paperwork granting tax-exempt status to the Barack H. Obama Foundation, a shady charity headed by the president’s half-brother that operated illegally for years.

According to the organization’s filings, Lerner approved the foundation’s tax status within a month of filing, an unprecedented timeline that stands in stark contrast to conservative organizations that have been waiting for more than three years, in some cases, for approval.

Lerner also appears to have broken with the norms of tax-exemption approval by granting retroactive tax-exempt status to Malik Obama’s organization…

  • Weekly Standard – Report: IRS Deliberately Chose Not to Fess Up to Scandal Before Election

“[I]f this fact came out in September 2012, in the middle of a presidential election? The terrain would have looked very different.”

The IRS wasn’t the only government agency targeting conservative groups, donors, and even small businesses:

The fight is on:
