R.I.P. Erdélyi Tamás, aka Tommy Ramone

Another punk bit the big one.

Erdélyi Tamás, aka Tom Erdelyi, aka Tommy Ramone, assembled and helped create one of the most influential bands ever.  The Ramones never had a hit single, despite hiring the legendary (and mentally disturbed) Phil Spector.

Tommy Ramone was not new to the recording industry when he and other Brooklyn friends decided to form a band to provide an alternative to the pre-packaged marketing-department formulaic garbage that infested the airwaves in the mid to late 1970s. The Ramones went back to rock and roll garage-band basics, with a twist – they played louder and faster.

That The Ramones rose to popularity by playing 3-chord rock in an obscure venue in the New York City Bowery district says a lot.  Punk was born at CBGB’s, and although The Ramones’ garage-band style never garnered them a hit, their influence was huge.

Their message was, “Screw Emerson Lake and Palmer, Yes, Kansas, Foreigner and ELO! Screw CSN&Y and Boston! Listen to C, F & G!”

And The Ramones were spot on. R.I.P. Erdélyi Tamás, and thanks.

And yes, this is The Overnight Open Thread.

The Hugh Maskela, Bix Beiderbecke & Artie Shaw Connection

“Grazing In The Grass” was one of my favorites, but after his U.S. hit in 1968, Hugh Maskela dropped off the charts despite having a long successful career overseas. I always thought he was just a one-hit wonder.

According to Wiki, in 1953, Maskela saw the movie “Young Man With A Horn” featuring Kirk Douglas as famed trumpeter Bix Beiderbecke. Maskela switched from piano to trumpet.

Self-taught on cornet, trumpeter Beiderbecke was an early jazz improvisational prodigy of sorts. He was also difficult to work with, a raging alcoholic  (despite Prohibition) tried to quit, suffered the DTs, and (after declaring that Mexicans with long knives were hiding under his bed) died at the age of 22, likely from a combination of alcohol poisoning and a form of pneumonia. In other words, people who knew Beiderbecke said he was a self-destructive asshole, while praising his talent.

What I find interesting is that Beiderbecke didn’t find fame until after he died. His improvised riff on “Singin’ The Blues” was coopted by Hoagy Carmichael, who wrote the most re-recorded jazz song in history: “Stardust.” Here’s my favorite version by Artie Shaw, featuring Billy Butterfield on trumpet.

With that, we’re off to the sweet melodies known in these parts as
The Overnight Open Thread.

Until this guy said it was a great idea

Vladimir Putin KGB

And checkmated this guy

Obama all humpy and shit

Who got all humpy about it before he realized that he’d just been pantsed in front of the entire world by an enemy of the USA who gave him a way out of the quagmire he was being forced to step into by his very own words.

The way out was facilitated by the Obama MSM propaganda machine who threw all credit to Vladimir Putin for giving POTUS a way to save face. Pheeew.

So here’s to Putin on The Overnight Open Thread.

Saturday Night Roadtrip In Blogmock County

I always had a soft spot in my heart for honest roots country music, especially on roadtrips. Grab the cooler, load up the Chevy Apache, hit the on ramp to nowhere and crank it up.

Dale Watson is a retro anomaly. Tattooed Texan playing Nashville Johnny Cash style, and it’s a perfect fit for a down-home country kickass episode of
The Overnight Open Thread.
